This paper investigates the psychological trauma precipitated by war in Death of a Hero, a semi-autobiographical novel by Richard Aldington, the veteran who served as a soldier in World War I. So, the writer himself witnessed the appalling horrors of war and turned them into a novel. This reveals how the war horrors shatter the sensitive artist psychologically and drive him to commit suicide. Although this novel departs from historical details in the protagonist’s tragic end, it offers a pathetic description of the writer’s agonies which transgresses its setting; i.e., England World War I, and

Abstract:
The original objectives of this research project were to: (1) develop immunoassays, photometric sensors, and electrochemical sensors for real-time measurement of progesterone and estradiol in milk, (2) develop biosensors for measurement of caseins in milk, and (3) integrate and adapt these sensor technologies to create an automated electronic sensing system for operation in dairy parlors during milking. The overall direction of research was not changed, although the work was expanded to include other milk components such as urea and lactose. A second generation biosensor for on-line measuremen

The Republic of Sudan is suffering a catastrophic famine. The entire country is in food crisis or food emergency. In July 2024, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared famine in the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people in North Darfur, near El Fasher; between 500,000 to 800,000 people live in the camp.1 The IPC also reported that 755,000 people in Sudan would be ‘in catastrophe’ (IPC phase 5) in the period to September 2024, while 25.6 million people face crisis conditions, the worst levels of food security ever recorded by the IPC in Sudan.2 The significant hum

Abstract:
Through the past decade, United Nations (UN) agencies have developed various initiatives in favor of the promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE): the creation of the UNTFSSE in 2013, the adoption of a resolution in the International Labor Conference in June 2022, the annual ILO Academy on SSE, etc. The SSE transnational networks, which are still trying to legitimate the SSE at the international level, often quote these activities as strong institutional support to the SSE. However, this emphasis raises questions about the actual place of SSE concerns in the UN system. The hypothes

Abstract:
In this paper, I analyse the Inquisition trial record of Íria Álvares (fl. 1580-1600), an Indigenous woman from the sertão of Bahia. Íria was the only Indigenous woman born to Indigenous parents who was tried by the First Visit of the Inquisition to Brazil in the sixteenth century. For this reason, her trial record represents a unique opportunity to explore the experiences of a freed Indigenous woman who spent her childhood in the sertão and adolescence and adulthood in colonial society. An analysis of her trial suggests that Íria was cognisant of the dynamics of colonial society and used her
