As central transport hubs of commodities, people and information, ports play a specific and important role in modern societies. This is valid even more so in socialist states. As we argue in this introduction, and subsequently throughout this Forum, socialist ports were in many ways places of exception: in a political system that preferred closed borders, ports symbolized the ‘gates to the world’; in an economic system that was thoroughly planned, ports became the main contact point for global trade outside of a planned economy. Abstract:
AbstractSeveral classifications of ports were proposed in the literature, but there is no single established or accepted framework or taxonomy due to the complexity and diversity of the port entities. UNCTAD introduced a classification based on the definition of port-generation, according to which a prevalent port’s characteristics could be associated to each port, the so-called generation. UNCTAD fully defined the characteristics of three generations of ports, while the fourth-generation of ports was less specified. Later, several researchers criticized the definition of port-generation and proposed new elements of classification, mainly of qualitative nature. Today five generations of ports may be identified. The paper proposes a set of characteristics to identify each port-generation. Several ports were object, in the time, of a process of hybridization. They were born with specific characteristics and, later, they evolved in acquiring new ones. The paper de-build the hybridization offering the possibility to identify the operative single generation. The paper introduces a set of material and immaterial characteristics to identify the port generation and then the correct tools to support planning and evaluation activities.

Abstract In general, ports in Indonesia do not have sound capabilities to face competition with foreign ports. For example, Pelindo III is the largest port company in Indonesia that controls the logistics distribution area of Eastern Indonesia and also faces global port competition. This study explores the competitive advantages of ports in Indonesia through a case study on Pelindo III. The present study focused on desk research and was explored through interviews. The five forces competition model analysis found that Pelindo III has very high competitiveness in domestic environments. Still, this competitiveness tends to be biased because Pelindo III stands behind its strength as the leading authority for managing port services in Indonesia as a state-owned enterprise. In global port competition, Pelindo III has a weakness in providing bargaining power to users in import activities. The global ports’ competitive advantages can be achieved if each port’s privatization and cargo sovereignty prerequisites are met.

Abstract Cladding/overlay thickness measurements were made on several primary air ports fabricated from alternative composite tubes installed in a kraft recovery boiler to document the fireside corrosion. Laboratory corrosions tests were then conducted to reproduce the relative corrosion rates determined by the field thickness measurments. It was found that all of the major available composite tube systems are suceptible to corrosion. Hydrated sodium sulphide and oxygen in combination with sodium hydroxide are implicated as major components in the liquid environment that causes the corrosion.

A port based model is an external representation including pairs of input-output variables grouped into ports. Each port in a model is a representation of a mechanism for energy transfer into, or out of, the physical system modeled. Port based models always have an equal number of inputs and outputs because each port is composed of an input-output pair. The number of ports in such models must typically be reduced to decrease model size, protect proprietary internal topology or simply because the eventual user has no plans to make connections to them. The process of eliminating undesired model

The Red Sea crisis began in late October 2023 when the Islamist Houthi movement launched missiles and armed drones at Israel demanding an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. Since these attacks proved unsuccessful, the movement turned to closer targets - international ships passing through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the aforementioned blockade. In the beginning, the targets were ships that had any connection with Israel, but later, however, the list expanded. Soon after, the US and its allies sent warships to provide defense for cargo ships plying this route. The Houthi movement is an Islamist

There are increasing concerns on the environmental impact of port operations which resulted in pressing global issues such as adopting sustainable technologies to reduce environmental harmful impacts on ports. From the sustainability perspective, a port should manage and balance three aspects which are economic, social, and environmental impacts. Using Internet of things (IoT) technology could minimize the environmental harmful impacts on ports and increase their sustainability. This paper aims at investigating the impact of applying IoT technology on Egyptian ports' sustainability. A semi str

Abstract Due to their low-lying coastal location, ports are vulnerable to climate change induced increases to flooding, waves, extreme winds, and the associated costly damages to port infrastructure and operational disruptions. For these reasons, there is an increasing need for ports to undertake regular risk assessments of the vulnerability of their infrastructure and operations due to the impacts of climate change. A digital twin, cloud-based climate change modelling solution has been developed to enable in-house risk assessments of climate change vulnerability to be undertaken for any port.

Abstract:
This study utilized automatic identification system (AIS) data to quantify vessel traffic patterns within a predominantly US port network from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2020, with the methods validated using independent data sets collected between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019. The analysis focused on South Atlantic Division (SAD) ports. AIS-derived data characterized individual ports’ traffic and port-to-port connectivity for the network. With foreign vessel entrances and clearances (E&C) data, the AIS-reported vessel characteristics enabled calculation of ships’ physical volume

Ports are a crucial element in any Free Trade Agreement because of their role in moving goods. Unfortunately, the port situation in Central America was not considered during Free Trade Agreement negotiations with the United States (CAFTA). Although CAFTA is intended to provide benefits for exporters and importers, these benefits will not be fully realized due to the regions high port costs. These high costs, along with concerns regarding infrastructure, security, efficiency, and productivity, can diminish CAFTAs potential benefits. Central America must therefore enact legal reforms to privatiz

The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to summarize a portion of recently published work (Young, Kress, et al. 2022) that used archival Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to measure the commercial vessel traffic connected to Puerto Rican and US Virgin Island (USVI) port areas from January 2015 to June 2020. Vessel movement derived from AIS was aggregated to construct a network that measured the port-to-port connectivity for all ports in the network and the interconnectivity of traffic between those ports. AIS data provided a description of vess

WP5’s Coastal Resilience and Operational Services demonstrator aimed to deliver capacity-building work in a developing country (Colombia) to enable local stakeholders to install a state-of-the-art sea level monitoring system independently. In practice, the WP5 team met this objective and has additionally delivered capacity-building work in tide gauge installation in 2 other countries (Spain and Italy), in order to support the longevity of the EuroSea tide gauge systems. As planned, training material was delivered in relation to the maintenance of these systems in all 3 locations. All installat

Fast NO measurements were acquired from the exhaust ports of a large bore natural gas 2-stroke cycle engine. A comprehensive set of steady state data was also taken. An engine scavenging model was used to correlate the cycle resolved fast NO measurements with the steady state NO measurements. In-cylinder pressure measurements made with piezoelectric transducers were compared with the fast NO measurements.
