Abstract:
This thesis describes the development and implementation of an Interleaving Warehouse Layout Model. Traditionally, the space allocated to items in a warehouse is determined on the basis of inventory cost considerations. With space requirements taken as given, the actual assignment of items to locations in the warehouse is carried out independently. Assuming an interleaving ("dual command") order picking method and the simple economic order quantity inventory model, it is demonstrated that the quantity and location problems must be considered simultaneously in order to achieve a minimum total cost (order picking cost plus inventory cost). A heuristic optimization technique is developed and applied to a set of realistic, hypothetical problems. This model allows warehouse management to assess the tradeoffs in handling costs among various stock arrangements and reorder quantities to achieve a minimum total cost.

Abstract:
This research is devoted to the development of a mathematical model for an Interleaving Warehouse Layout. The space allocated to the items in the warehouse is most commonly determined on the basis of inventory cost of the items. Once the space requirements for the items are computed, the actual assignment of items to locations in the warehouse is carried out independently. An Interleaving Warehouse Layout is presented in this research to incorporate both reorder quantity and location of each item in a single comprehensive mathematical model of the warehouse. The advantage of this approach is that it considers the quantity and location problems encountered in a warehouse layout simultaneously. The mathematical model developed for the warehouse layout is optimized utilizing the computer code GRG2.5. The numerical results for two warehouses are summarized, discussed and compared with the data available in the literature.

Abstract:
To utilize space better, warehouses stack their products on top of each other. This increases the risk of injury for workers when storing and retrieving the products. Some warehouses counteract this by using robots to retrieve products to a picking area where a human worker picks the products needed to fulfill an order. This means that it is important for the robots to be effective when retrieving products to reduce the time the worker spends waiting in the picking area. This thesis focuses on the grouping of products in the containers when they are stored in the warehouse. The robots will then retrieve one container at a time and if the grouping of products is done correctly this should decrease the number of retrievals required to fulfill an order. In order to make the decision on which products to group together, an application was developed that data mined previous orders that the warehouse had received in an attempt to extract information about the products. With the help of this information the application then suggests different product layouts that focus on different goals when they are created. The different layouts are then compared against each other in order to determine which layout technique produces the best results. This algorithm has been named the PLO-algorithm. The results showed that when a product is placed with the PLO-algorithm, the most important aspect to consider is the relations it has with the other products it is grouped with. The results also showed that data mining orders that are too old can have a negative impact on the result if not handled correctly. The results also showed that when constructing the warehouse you should try to avoid restrictions that affect which products can be placed together as much as possible since these restrictions can impact the effectiveness of the warehouse in a negative way. The thesis draws the conclusion that there is a clear gain in effectiveness for warehouses to have a planed layout for their products. It is recommended to data mine previous orders to extract relations between the products if possible since this piece of information showed the best results in this thesis. It is also in the warehouse best interest to avoid as many restrictions as possible that affect which products can be placed together since this can impact the results in a negative way. It is also beneficial to not include data that is too old in the data mining since this can impact the results in a negative way if not handled correctly.

Abstract:
Background Warehouse efficiency has gained a lot of attention in the recent years where racking layout and slotting of the SKUs are essential. The efficiency can be measured in the total traveling distance that occur in the warehouse. Two of the most central racking layout and slotting policies are the fishbone layout and ABC class-based slotting. These policies offer many new advantages for the traveling distance compared to others.   Objectives The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a combination of a fishbone layout and ABC class-based slotting affects the total traveling distance relative to a traditional layout with random slotting. This will then be analyzed in order to investigate to what degree it can be implemented depending on the situation a company has.   Methods The study was carried out as a simulation study, simulating the forklift traveling distance between four different warehouse layout and slotting configurations. This simulation was done by gathering of information in the form of observations, interviews, measuring and data from the EDI system of the company. The simulation was made in excel and featured eight possible scenarios depending on different events which could occur in the warehouse. The data in the study were then analyzed through a one-way ANOVA test, Scheffe’s post hoc test and t-Tests.   Results The result of the study shows that the different events which can occur in the warehouse is affected by a change in layout and slotting configurations. With the implementation of new layout and slotting configurations it is also shown that the forklift traveling distance in the warehouse can be reduced. The result also shows that the isolation of the effects that the respective layout or slotting policies provides reduces the forklift traveling distance individually as well as a combination would do.   Conclusions The conclusion is that the Fishbone layout with ABC class-based slotting is the optimal solution considering the reduction in traveling distance in a warehouse. When considering the implementation process and the potential benefits with the configurations, a general company is recommended to consider what amount of resources they are willing to invest before they carry out the implementation.   Delimitations This paper is delimited to the total travelling distance that occur in a warehouse because of the time restriction. The study will not examine the intangible part of a warehouse which means that the WMS- system will not be addressed. The paper will not create an investment calculus for the proposed solution.

Abstract:
Background: Nordic E-commerce group (NECG) consists of affiliated companies NordicInk, NordicFeel and PetsOnline. Three different types of companies in one warehouse area contribute to a wide range of products held in inventory. NECG’s problem derives in the fact that the company’s warehouse layout needs to handle a larger volume of sales, but is not capable of doing this in a structured way today. This matter of fact has led to new thoughts concerning improvements of the layout. The warehouse layout referred to in this thesis includes input and output doors, receiving and outgoing areas, material handling equipment and the placement of articles in inventory. Although article placement is per definition a part of warehouse layout, it will be given extra emphasis in this thesis as it is one of NECG’s most critical issues.   Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify NECG’s current warehouse layout and article placement and the problems associated with it, as well as to provide suggested actions for improvements. This is to be done so NECG can better utilize the warehouse space, and thus prepare the warehouse to handle a larger volume of sales.   Methodology: Qualitative and quantitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews and observations at NECG, as well as through excel files containing transactional data for NordicInk’s products. Through a non-probability, snowball selection the respondents were chosen. There have not been any requirements from NECG regarding confidentiality in terms of the warehouse layout.   Findings: There are a number of suggested actions that NECG may apply to improve the warehouse layout; two separate doors for incoming and outgoing deliveries, one designated receiving and one outgoing area, and a flow shop layout combined with a U-form layout would be the most beneficial for NECG’s warehouse. Furthermore, NECG needs a more consistent article placement and it is recommended for the company to apply a floating location system to its high-picked products and a fixed location system for its low-picked products. This will make NECG take better use of the available space and a more structured warehouse will be achieved.
Abstract:
Historically, the paper market has consisted of few customers with high demands. However, the market has changed and nowadays it consists of many customer with lower demands, which causes problems in the warehouse process of Braviken Papermill. The main problem is that the utilization rates in the storage bays are low due to the relatively large bays compared to the order quantities. The purpose of this project is to develop a new set of bays that fits the current market and increases the utilization rates. The goal of the new set is to decrease the amount of manual operations and instead use the full potential of the allocation system.    The new set of bays consist of four bay types, dimensioned for 2, 4, 8 and 16 reel stacks respectively. Several experiments are done, and the new set of bays performs better than the current one, in terms of the utilization rates for storage events in the bays. The average utilization rate is significantly higher for the new set compared to the current. A decrease in effective storage space can be compensated by an increased degree of utilization. Also, it is beneficial with more and smaller bays in a market situation like the one of Holmen Paper.

The warehouse layout and operations of a semiconductor tool manufacturer were studied with the objective of reducing the lead time for parts ordered from the warehouse to 8 hours. Current order fulfillment operations were studied and interviews with involved personnel were conducted. Additionally, data was extracted and analyzed from the company's SAP Extended Warehouse Management database to analyze the past performance of the warehouse operations. Three main areas for improvements were analyzed and recommendations were made regarding each area. First, it is recommended that a kit of parts ordered should be sent immediately the constituent parts are consolidated and the kit is completed. This saves an average of 6 hours that parts in a complete kit wait for other kits to be completed before being sent out. Second, the picking aisles of the warehouse should be cleared so that parts in storage locations are easily accessed for picking and no time is wasted on clearing a path to pick a part. This leads to an average time saving of 1.2 hours per day on the time parts are delivered. Third, the receiving and sorting areas in the warehouse should be combined together. This frees up storage space for excess bulk material which block picking aisles. These recommendations are to be combined with other material flow improvements. It was determined that the goal of 8 hours lead time is unrealistic. However, calculations suggest that lead time will be reduced to 16 hours.

Abstract:
Nowadays warehousing became one of the most important and critical part in supply chain systems due to the fact that it consumes a considerable part of logistic cost. Designing phase of warehousing system is the most important part in warehousing since most of the strategic and tactical decisions should be taken in this phase. Majority of academic papers are primarily analysis oriented and does not give a systematic method and techniques as a basis for warehouse redesign. So there is a need to develop a structured procedure that can be applied for different type of warehouses. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to develop a process for redesigning production warehouses, and analyzing major problems during redesign steps. The thesis is designed as a case study, and a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection and data analysis. The methodology focuses around the warehousing process and redesign steps as described in the literature. Results of the thesis develop a seven steps procedure for redesigning of the production warehouse, also different problems and challenges are faced during redesign steps. It was tried to choose the best redesigning method which fit with the characteristics of the warehouse, in order to cover the space reduction of the warehouse with the consideration of existing facilities and reducing of cost. In addition, the performance of the current warehouse system was evaluated based on current design of the warehouse in order to avoid repeating of same mistake in redesign process. Storage assignment policy as one of the redesign steps was discussed and a framework for storage system of the components were suggested. The findings of the thesis to some extent can be applicable to other production warehouses. Further research is suggested for more specific results and new developed redesign methods for all types of warehouses.

Abstract:

The Warehouse have played an important paper in the supply chain, ensuring the arrival of goods at retail and end users, mediating the production of industrial plants and are the core of various logistics processes. Its efficient management is crucial to the smooth running supply chain. In many distribution centers, the layout of the positioning of its products does not meet adequately their internal processes to split stock split (picking). In this work, the objective is to identify the shortcomings of stock picking organization to reduce It is the distance traveled in the separation of applications on a CD. The concepts of ABC curve and partnership mechanisms between products in order to prepare new layouts that favor the improvement of picking are used in order to reduce the distance traveled by the separator, and thereby increasing process productivity. As a result, it was observed that the proposed layout based on the association between products present in common requests presented a smaller distance in picking.

Abstract:

Färggrossen is a warehousing company that was established in 1976. The company has over 400 customers ranging across mid and south Sweden; it stores 5,000 different types of products such as paints, wallpapers, chemicals and tools which are used for painting.

Since its establishment, the company has not changed how it manages its warehouse. Decisions are based on the warehouse manager’s personal memory and decisions, and this method worked sufficiently well until the company was bought by Mikael Lindgren in September 2008. Lindgren, the CEO, believed that the company had more potential, which is why the company has eagerly started to make changes in order to improve the warehouse operations as well as to reach its full potential. This thesis is to guide the company to reach this goal.

At our first meeting with Färggrossen, improvements regarding different processes as well as the warehouse layout were identified. As a first step, a literature study was conducted in order to gain deeper insight and understanding about warehouse layouts; also we benefited from studying literature regarding different warehouse aspects from a system perspective: inputs, processes and outputs.

Subsequent to the literature study, we identified those thesis research questions which needed to be answered in order to improve the warehouse management at Färggrossen. The next step was to decide which methods should be used in order to answer these questions. After researching different methodology options, a meeting with Färggrossen and our supervisor Bengt Ekdahl took place where we, together, decided to use the multiple case study method.

Färggrossen suggested that we study two other companies, BSAB and ECO; according to them, these companies had similar warehouses. To be able to benchmark three companies, we needed to understand the warehousing management systems of all three companies, which is why we conducted our interviews.

Once we finished gathering the required data, we defined the three companies’ activities in a manner to correspond with the terminology which is used in the literature.  In the analysis chapter we compared the three companies, and also used the information from the literature in order to provide Färggrossen with recommendations on how to improve the warehouse processes and layout. These are categorised as main, secondary and future recommendations; the main recommendations are the most important and inexpensive to implement, which is why we strongly suggest that they are prioritized.

The two most important recommendations to improve the outputs of the warehouse system are implementing a serialized locater addressing system and defining a bulk area to support the replenishment process. These particular modifications will improve the overall efficiency of the warehouse system as well as the product availability and the customer satisfaction.

The overall efficiency of the warehouse system will be further improved by eliminating manual labour as much as possible and combining the inspections whih are done in the receiving process with the putaway process.

The product condition will be improved if the following recommendations are implemented; a small shelf solution which is used in ECO, a fixed slot system in the wallpaper area and the implementation of safety precautions in the company.

The purpose of this thesis was to map and analyze Färggrossen in order to improve the inventory, warehouse layout and the methods being used in the warehouse management. With our recommendations, the company will have an improved and new warehouse layout, the processes will be improved and the efficiency will be increased.

Abstract:
Background: Warehousing activities are essential and can be crucial to the organizations overall performance and success, especially for SMEs (small and mediumsized enterprises). The warehouse operations can be particularly challenging if the organization is in a rapid growth phase and if the stored article is characterized by requirements. In order to effectively carry out the warehouse operations, organizations need to develop a warehouse design. However, today’s research does not acknowledge how SME’s with above-mentioned prerequisites should form such warehouse design. Purpose: This study aims at proposing a warehouse design that takes into account the requirements of the article. Furthermore, the study intends to examine the consequences of a rapid growth phase on an SME's warehouse. Method: This paper has studied the organization Nordic Green Design AB, a Swedish SME, whose articles consists of ornamental plants. These products require specific care such as temperature, light and irrigation regulation. The data collection was based on interviews with the organization's warehouse staff and marketing manager. Additionally, data was collected through observations of the organization's existing warehouse design. The data has then been analyzed based on the theoretical reference frame. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of identifying needs and requirements when developing a warehouse design, especially when the article is characterized by requirements. The determination of needs and requirements determines the foundation of which storage management methods that are applicable in the warehouse design. By shifting focus to the determination of needs and requirements, more efficient storage can be achieved. Furthermore, the study indicates that a rapid growth phase contributes to extensive organizational challenges. The results of the study suggest that a decentralized organizational structure has the best prerequisites for managing these challenges.

Abstract:
Background: E-commerce has grown during the last years. E-commerce in the construction industry on the other hand has not grown as much, but it is heading upwards. Therefore companies working in the construction industry should prepare for this change. Södra Wood Interiör in Kallinge is currently planning and preparing for this change, where a flow of both retail orders and bulk orders should be combined in a profitable and efficient manner.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify improvements at SWI:s main warehouse, when it comes to the companies material handling process, facing a continued increase in e-commerce in the construction industry.  Method: The essay is of qualitative nature and has been performed by a case study. The essay has been processed in a hermeneutical approach and performed with a deductive approach.  Conclusion: An increased flow of e-commerce results in a change in quantity and size of orders. If SWI choose to follow the trend and enable such solutions for their customers SWI will get an increased flow of so called retail orders. This in turn leads to that SWI have to combine a large flow of retail orders and bulk orders in the same warehouse. In the current situation it is likely that such a combination implies that the material handling process becomes less efficient. The analysis presents various improvements proposed to enable SWI to meet the inefficiency that comes from the increase in retail orders. The improvements suggest a separate warehouse that deals with the retail orders in SWI:s existing warehouse and additional warehouse located elsewhere.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an integrated model which involves creative and analytical features for designing a cost effective logistics centre layout on operational level, with respect to time and space utilization. Engineering methods, creative skills, simulation and multi-criteria decision making methods were integreted in the  developed model. The model has been implemented and validated in Oskarshamn Intralog, which is a sister company of Scania. After applying the model in the case company, three different layout concepts were generated based on engineering and simulation techniques. These concepts were evaluated from utilization of space, time and flexibility aspects. Furthermore, multi criteria decision making method was used to select the most cost effective layout concept among these concepts. Different aspects helped to see various effects of warehouse operations on layout design. Simulation was used as a powerful tool to test cycle time within designed concepts. Clearly it was concluded that a combination of two concepts led to reach the expected results as an optimum point among space, time utilization and flexibility which fullfilled the answer to both academical and practical problem

Abstract:
The purpose of the case study was to investigate what Airshoppen Travel Retail could take into consideration when designing their new warehouse layout. In order to carry out the study, a theoretical model was developed, the model focuses on how warehouse layout could be designed. The theoretical model analyzes the warehouse layout of two companies. The findings were then used to analyze and give recommendations to Airshoppen Travel Retail regarding what the company could take into consideration when designing their new warehouse layout. Interviews and observations showed that the development of the warehouses processes was adapted and limited by the lack of space in their warehouses. Previous research suggested that the design of a warehouse should be based on the choice of system, either manual or automatic. Inadequate design can lead to high costs, limited flexibility and reduced efficiency. An interesting aspect that the study highlighted was that the previous research mainly focuses on reducing travel distance, while the study's empirical basis showed that companies primarilyfocus on decreasing picking errors and increasing productivity. The results of the study were presented as recommendations to Airshoppen Travel Retail on how the company could design their new warehouse layout. The results showed the importance of choosing systems and control policies simultaneously to avoid limitations in the layout. Furthermore, with a manual system, implementation of zone picking could lead to increased efficiency. On a final note, careful calculations are required for the company to properly determine whether automation is a necessary and profitable investment.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to identify critical constraints in the inbound process at a distribution warehouse. To accomplish the purpose two research questions were formulated: Which critical constraints can occur in the material flow in the inbound process at a distribution warehouse? How can the identified constraints be excluded in the inbound process? Method – The study was performed inductively, and the data collection techniques were interviews, observations, document studies and literature studies. A single case study was performed at a distribution warehouse and the empirical data and theories were compared to accomplish the purpose of the study. Findings – The result of the study demonstrates that the critical constraints in the inbound process at a distribution warehouse are space, material handling, automatic systems and warehouse layout. The conclusion of the study is that the constraints are connected and affect each other since they are all included in the same process. To exclude the constraints different types of standards should be implemented in the inbound process, and distribution warehouses should work with continuous improvements. Implications – The study does not contribute to new theories but can be practically beneficial for distribution warehouses similar to the studies case study. Limitations – The study only focuses on one distribution warehouse and is therefore a single case study. The generalizability could have been higher if the study had been conducted at multiple distribution warehouses.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how an efficient freight flow and a surface utilization of a warehouse layout can be achieved in non-manufacturing third party logistics companies. In addition to that the aim is to provide an analysis of how logistics costs are affected by existing wastes. Based on this three research questions have been formulated:   1. What factors are decisive for how efficient a freight flow can be in a nonmanufacturing business?  2. How can the layout of a terminal be streamlined based on prioritizations of freight?   3. What logistics costs arise in a non-manufacturing business and how can these be linked to specific processes and activities?  Methodology: In order to answer the study´s research questions and fulfill the purpose a case study and a literature review were used as the method. Identification of waste, layout prioritization and logistics costs are the investigated areas in the literature review. The case study was conducted at a company where interviews, observations and data collection have taken place in order to answer the research questions and provide a clear picture of the problem area. The collected data is subsequently analyzed against the processed theory in the selected areas.     Findings: By applying the processed theory several wastes have been identified which underpin potential improvements. Among others the layout prioritization and the retrieval process of the case company have been identified as wastes and focused on in this study. The layout prioritizations have resulted in two restructured layout proposals in which the case company´s delivery destinations were relocated based on factors such as physical proximity and zone division. Through the proposal the efficiency of the internal freight flow of the case company can be increased and thereby cost and complexity be reduced. The retrieval process has been analyzed with the aim to identify all the affected activities and processes. By doing this each activity can be linked to the arising logistics cost. The result of this part of the study is an established calculation of the cost generated by the retrieval process.    Recommendations: For further studies in the selected area, an extended analysis of the entire freight flow from vendor to end customer is recommended to provide a deeper understanding of the entire work process. Also further studies in the logistics costs area in a non-manufacturing business is recommended.

Abstract:
Effective material handling in a healthcare organization can both reduce operational costs andat the same time result in higher quality of care. Traditionally, materials management issueshave not been a priority for explanatory reasons. A hospital is primarily a healthcare facilityand not a company that actively needs to seek profitability to ensure its survival. However, this has resulted in insufficient management and procedures with high costs and lack ofresource efficiency as a result. Deficient work routines and methods for materialsmanagement along with improper utilization of storage facilities have been the main focus ofthis study. The study provides suggestions for how operation ward 1 at Södra Älvsborgshospital can work to improve stock management of its consumables. Semi-structuredinterviews along with quantitative data form the basis of this study, which is divided intothree main areas, processes, material management and warehouse design. After analysing theempirical data together with the theoretical frame of reference, some recommendations maybe presented to the operations department. The consumables should be moved to anappropriate storage space on the lower floor that has appropriate ventilation for medicalmaterials and a specific unpacking area. The new storage area should be dimensioned andoptimized based on product family, pick rate and physical characteristics of the articles tominimize overwork, unnecessary movements and promote ergonomics. In order to ensure thatthe right skills are utilized for the correct task, a warehouse manager should be employed withmain responsibility for materials handling. Valuable time can thus be saved for the nurses sothat they can focus more on their primary tasks. In order to simplify materials management, implementation of a two-bin system should be carried out, where safety stocks, re-orderpoints and order quantities are built-in and visualized.

Abstract:
Inventory management refers to activities such as receiving goods, storing, in storage, order picking, rearranging, sorting and shipping. According to previous studies, by Drury (1988), 55% - 60% of the warehouse costs incur in order picking and rearrangement. Today there are theories and models on how inventory management around order picking and rearrangement can be optimized. However, bulk stocks are rarely addressed in research or literature. Thus, this work was aimed at examining the adaptive theory of customary methods in a business with bulk storage. The study has fulfilled its purpose through a case and literature study with both qualitative and quantitative approaches in the form of interviews and observations. Inventory design and inventory control can advantageously be seen as basic methods that require efficiency development in picking and rearranging in bulk storages. Methods such as MUDA and 5S create the conditions for identifying, maintaining and implementing efficiency improvements. The customary methods studied could, through observation and interview, be found to be implementable or non-implementable. In summary, an overall template of the methods could be compiled where they could jointly and separately contribute to efficiency improvements. The studied company could be provided with improvement proposals that are recommended to be introduced in both smaller stages and during larger, more extensive projects.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the field of warehouse management, focusing on frequency control of stock. The purpose of the thesis is to reduce the warehouse staff mileage by placing an article based on its number of picks, i.e. how frequently it gets picked. In order to achieve relevant results the following four questions have been answered in the thesis:

  • How should the articles be placed with regard to the picking frequency?
  • Which factors, if any, needs to be addressed beyond the picking frequency when articles are placed based on frequency?
  • Can the present picking system be improved?
  • Is frequency placement with regard to the picking frequency profitable to implement for the company?

The thesis is based on literature studies and on the data that has been collected from the company’s business system. Other information has been collected through interviews and observations.

The authors have reached a conclusion that is based on a classification and grading of the company’s articles. An analysis of how the articles where placed at the time of the study resulted in that deficiencies with the current article placement could be identified. The main deficiency was the articles placement with regard to how frequently they were picked. To find out which articles were the most frequently picked an ABC-analysis were done on the company’s standard articles. This thesis is based on the articles that were classified as A-articles in this ABC-analysis.

Articles that were identified among the most frequent was scattered throughout the warehouse, sometimes far away from the stock workers baseline. A number of different needs and criteria could be identified and used to formulate a improvement proposal. This proposal contains exact placements for the articles with the highest frequency as well as zones where the higher frequency articles should be placed. In conjunction with this proposal an additional proposal concerning the company’s picking system was presented. This proposal was based on opinions collected from interviews and on the article placement in the stock. The most influential criteria regarding the picking system was the size of the articles, since the picker needs to place larger articles in the bottom and smaller ones on the top of his pallet.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine how a warehouse of finished goods can be made more effective with warehouse design, warehouse control, new technologies and how the current way of work must be adjusted to the new technologies. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the writers had two research questions connected to the purpose. Method - A case study has been conducted as research strategy in collaboration with Smurfit Kappa AB. The study began by researching possible theories that could be relevant to the study. This was followed by an empirical study where interviews and observations were carried out. Documents with floor plans have also been studied to understand the current state of the warehouse. The empirical findings have been compiled, discussed, and compared to the theoretical findings. Results - At the time of the study, the warehouse house of finished goods did not have a system for storing goods. They also do not have an ERP-system and therefore the communication possibilities are limited. The company will implement an ERP-system and barcode scanners in the future which makes it possible to improve the efficiency of the warehouse with design, control, layout, zones, scanners, and standardize movement. There is also new finding of wastage that can be controlled. Findings - Even though the case company of this study can achieve improved efficiency in the warehouse by using the management methods and tools presented in this study, the most important part is to provide the employees with the right information. Thereafter the management methods and tools such as zone sectioning, barcode scanners, and standardized create more effectiveness. In addition to previous findings, two new forms of waste that can occur in a warehouse has been identified. Research limitations - Because of the decisions made by the case company of future implementation of barcode scanners, the researcher felt that there were limitations to the possible improvement proposals. If the researchers could have proposed a different tool, the outcome of the work could have looked different. If there were more interviews or several business cases the generalization it would strengthened the case study.

Abstract:
Background: Many processes play a critical role in making non-manufacturing operations work as optimal as possible. One of these processes that is an important part of these activities is the goods flow process. If this process does not function effectively, this can affect the entire business, which in turn will lead to huge costs and lead times. It is therefore important that the flow of goods in the terminal works well because customers nowadays require that goods that they place an order have to be delivered as soon as possible. Purpose: The aim of the study is to find solutions for streamlining flow of incoming and outgoing goods, which will reduce unnecessary transport distances between goods reception and delivery ports, as well as finding a solution for lack of surface. Methodology: All necessary information has been collected by using qualitative and quantitative data and with the help of various types of interviews: semi-structured and unstructured, as well as participating in observations to initiate process mapping and find new terminal design. Subsequently, cost savings were achieved by comparing the new and old terminal design, after that calculations were performed to see how much surface use was made more efficient with movement of LKM stock. Conclusion: By analyzing incoming goods flow and changing port usage in the terminal, in other words by increasing the number of ports for a department and by distributing goods flow between ports in an optimal manner, goods flow efficiency can be achieved. Non-manufacturing operations work can improve its productivity by optimizing floor space usage and eliminating waste and defects which effect goods handling.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to identify a distribution center's deficiencies in the warehouse layout and article placement to enable streamlining in the order picking process.  In order to enable a response to the purpose, the following three questions have been formulated: 1. What problems may occur in the warehouse layout of a distribution center that affects the effectiveness of the order picking process? 2. What problems may occur in the article placement at a distribution center that affects the effectiveness of the order picking process? 3. What improvements can be made to the warehouse layout and article placement at a distribution center to streamline the order picking process? Method – In order to define the problem area, a pilot study was conducted at a distribution center, which formed the purpose and questions of the study. To enable its answer, a case study and literature review has been conducted as methods. The case study consisted of observations, surveys, document studies and benchmarking to generate empirical data to the study. Literature review has been designed to create a theoretical framework around warehouse layout and article placement effect on the order picking process. The data collected has then been analyzed and discussed to enable improvement proposals. Findings – Several problems have been identified in the warehouse layout and article placement that directly impact the order picking process. In order to prevent and change these problems, understanding the complexity of warehouse building is required. It is important to have a clear strategy for which articles that are considered most important to the company. A recommendation may be to place the most high-frequency products in connection with the packing station. Once the strategy is determined, the storage systems can be dimensioned and the route method set. When all these processes interact with each other, a more efficient order pick will occur, which will allow companies to reduce costly waste. Implications – The authors have founded the study within a problem area where there already exist a lot of theories. Therefore the implication of the study consisted of highlighting a new point of view of the already existing theory of warehouse layout, article placement and order picking. The new point of view, therefore, can assist businesses to get a better discussion and understanding of how their warehouse layout and article placement should be designed, which may allow the study to affect the development of other companies. Limitations – The limitations of the study consist of studying only one business as well as some lack of information. Should more businesses and respondents be presented within the study, more deficiencies could have been identified and the results had become more credible and generalizable. Some missing information has also affected the study. Within improvement measures, there was no access to some article information required in the ABC-analysis. Furthermore, poles were discovered in the warehouse layout that affected the formation of the improved warehouse layouts. The lack of information may therefore have affected the final result.

This internship report is part of the dissertation project scope for the completion of the Master in Industrial Engineering and Management of the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias da Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC), held in the logistics department of the factory of the Eberspächer group in the complex of Tondela in the industrial zone of Santiago de Besteiros. After the first year in Portugal due to forecasts of a growing number of production lines, the growing volume of transactions and the increase in raw material references, consumables and finished products, the reorganization became necessary of the entire warehouse layout, which is crucial in order to guarantee the stock of raw materials so that all production lines can work without being forced to stop production, as well as reduce the operational costs of the warehouse and, on the other hand, another to increase the turnover of materials and ensure the existence of available finished product that will serve as an intermediate product for other production processes of other important companies in the automotive sector (Customers). This dissertation then tries to develop, after a research work on other works already carried out by other researchers, a methodology of design and design for the reorganization of the layout of the logistics center of Eberspächer Tondela. The working method is composed of four main phases, the identification and selection of the information and variables necessary to carry out the calculation of the different areas of the warehouse, the calculation of the necessary areas in order to facilitate easy justification, the final design and implementation decisions of the project.

Abstract:
This report intends to reflect the work done at Macroalfa - Ferramentas de Precisão, Lda.This company has undergone recent business restructurings and now produces series of plastic parts. On the one hand, due to the high setup costs of the injection molding machines, products with constant demand are produced in batches. On the other hand, the need to purchase large quantities of raw material to meet production has arisen. For these reasons, the company acquired a new warehouse to store the lots of purchased raw material (providing economies of scale) and the stock coming from the manufacturing lots. The purpose of this dissertation is to organize the new warehouse, since there is already a reliable history of consumption with a well-defined list of customers. In the first stage, was made an analysis of the current situation of the warehouse, where was identified a limitation that greatly conditioned the profitability of space: the structure is old and fragile. As the warehouse is located on the first floor, in order to avoid accidents, the raw material will have to be distributed by the beams and supporting pillars, as they are the areas that can carry more weight. After a process of data collection and analysis, definition of operational methods, sizing and required equipment calculation, 3 layouts are proposed. In conjunction with the management department of the company, the preferred layout was selected, taking into account the requirements and limitations of the warehouse.

As melhorias propostas permitiram melhorar o layout do armazém principal.

Abstract:
Nowadays companies operate in a single market, the global market, in which compete with companies from all over the world and of different sizes. This fact only contributes to increasing the competitiveness of firms, in the pursuit of better meet the needs and requirements of the client, i.e. increase its market share. Increasing globalization has led to an increase in the flow of information and knowledge and, consequently, of solutions (products/services). In this way customers are more demanding, trends are constant and the variety of products increases. So, companies are struggling currently to produce more quality and speed, something only achieved with continuous supply on the part of suppliers, in reduced batches. This philosophy avoids the costs of stock and satisfies the demand in its exact quantities. "Logistics is that part of supply chain management that plans, implements and controls the efficient and cost-effective flow and storage of raw materials, semi-finished materials and finished products, as well as the information relating to them, from the point of origin to point of consumption, for the purpose of meeting the needs of customers" (oak, 2002, p. 31). The departments of a company must be in harmony in order to achieve success. Logistics is one of the most important departments, because it interacts with all others. This deals with the acquisition, storage and supply of raw materials, as well as the dispatch of the finished product. This department, as well as the company, must maintain a close relationship and trust with suppliers and customers. Only avoiding delays from suppliers, on reception, production and shipment, it is possible to respond to customer needs in the stipulated time. Throughout this work will be reviewed the company´s logistics activities and enumerated some improvements proposals to speed up these same activities.

Abstract:
The dissertation presented is the result of a project in the scope of the Master of Systems Engineering, and was carried out at Estamparia Têxtil Adalberto Pinto da Silva SA. The main objective of the project is the analysis of problems that are related to the raw material warehouse, and the development of solutions that reduce or eliminate the problems identified. For a better understanding of the current system and how it is inserted in the core of the company, the project started with the characterization of all the processes that are carried out throughout the company. In a second phase, further data and other pertinent information about the system was collected, and a deep analysis and problem diagnsis was done. Finally, an improvement proposal was developed for future implementation. Expected results will result from proposed actions such as areas properly identified, simpler article handling, a FIFO storage system, and, in general, improved organization and operation procedures. At the time of completion of this project, warehouse improvement actions were being initiated, namely the elimination of obsolete articles and the rectification of stock in stock. Some improvements have been observed as a having a positive impact on the warehouse space, in particular in terms of the increase of the storage capacity, the reduction of reception and picking times, and the safety conditions of the operators.

This dissertation project was developed in a company context, the Copefi Components For Automotive S.A., which produces plastic components for the automotive industry. This company is in full expansion and decided to increase its facilities in order to be able to give respond to new challenges and projects that the extremely competitive automotive sector provides. It is important to structure new layouts and reorganize existing ones to meet current needs. The dissertation project fits in the warehouse zone, more precisely, in the optimization of the storage space in the racks, thus contributing to the improvement of the performance of the layout of the production process. The lack of use of space in the storage racks of finished product, as result from the inadequate division of the levels of the racks. After storing a pallet on a level, empty space is visible, this could be availed if the divisions in the racks were well structured. With the lack of storage places the finished product is allocated in the corridor that gives access to the warehouse, in the corridor of the warehouse itself and is sometimes left in production, thus affecting the operation of the latter zone. One of the consequences of improper storage of the product is the difficulty of accessing the racks. An employee responsible for the production cell is responsible for its supply having to go to the warehouse. This process compromises productivity levels and creates waste products that do not add value to the product. Adding to the fact that there is sometimes no easy way to reach an article in a rack, the waste is accentuated. Briefly, the existing disorganization causes inefficiency in the processes of the finished product in the phase antecedent to the arrival at the warehouse, also hindering, and the fluidity of its flow. Thus, it is intended to optimize the storage space using linear programming techniques, through an AMPL language model, and heuristic methods. This dissertation is expected to achieve a better process efficiency and flow, through which the finished product is subject from production to warehouse, thus transmitting a better operation and adding value to the product.

Abstract:
Dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Industrial
A Coprax S.A.
Coprax S.A. is a historical company in the Portuguese market that sells and produces pipes and fittings that can be applied in water supply networks, air conditioning, industry and irrigation. However, despite being a company with a good image in the market, as a result of the dedication of all its employees, it competes in a global market with companies with differentiated value propositions and a different scale/dimension. The increasing globalization that has been taking place in the last decades has caused a very significant increase in the quantity and quality of information that reaches the national market. As a result, customer demand has been increasing exponentially as well as the appearance of new piping solutions. The recent economic crisis has affected all sectors of our economy, but construction has been one of the most affected areas and consequently all companies in the field of building materials, Coprax S.A. was no exception. In order to increase the company's efficiency and the quality of service provided to its customers, the stock management area was quickly identified as a sector where considerable improvement work could be done. It’s in this context that this dissertation intends to contribute, using as a case study the non-productive warehouse of Coprax S.A. In this project will be made a study between classification and stock management models, which aim to increase the company's competitiveness. The implementation of the presented solutions will allow an increase in efficiency related to picking and shipping of material, optimization of available space, reduction of obsolete and low rotation stock as well as a general increase in efficiency associated with the company's stock management.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Purpose: The purpose of the study is to present what a big increase of volume at the material handling process would mean for a company, and how different processes within the handling process would be affected. This study will show, non-value-added processes that can exist within the material handling are also visualized, and how to make a potential effectivization. To be able to answer the aim of the study three research questions was created: How can a company’s material handling handle a volume increase of 30 %? Which non-value-added processes limit the material handling within companies?  What methods exist for inventory management and what are the benefits of these?   Methodology: A literature review have been conducted in parallel with a case and benchmarking study.  The case study contains qualitative interviews, observations and experiment, and by this a process mapping has been conducted to visualizes muda through the process. The benchmarking studies is relying on interviews as well as observations on three different companies. The literature review contains processes that are used for material handling, inventory, lean, automation, layout, cost optimization, delivery capability as well as VMI inventory.     Result: The study result in a visualization of muda in the material handling process at the case company, through this improvement proposals could be delivered regarding the working process. With the visualization as a base a cost estimation regarding individual mudas cost and the following consequences. The benchmarking studies resulted in improvement suggestions at the case company and an indication of what the different methods would mean when adapted. The companies have different aspects in relation to the case company which mean that the different improvement suggestions are of different magnitudes.     Implications: The purpose of the study has been achieved by answering the research questions. By identification of non-value-added through the process curtain points for improvement has been identified. The improvement suggestions have support from the literature review and the benchmarking study. As the study has only been conducted at one company during a curtain period of time the author reserves for a generalization of the identified factors that does not include all companies, and should instead be seen as an indication.     Recommendations: For further studies regarding volume increase at the material handling process should be studied at other companies with other limitations than the case company to further increase the scientific value.

Abstract:
The broadening of the range of products at the VW Autoeuropa assembly line has increased the complexity of the production system and the related requirement to restructure its supplying services. The introduction of the new Multi Purpose Vehicle model (MPV), replacing the previous one and the concentration of the assembly of all vehicles in a single assembly line determined changes both at the productive system and at the logistic operations levels. The reported work addressed this business problem by focusing on the supply of engines and gearboxes. The set objective concerned the determination of a solution for intermediate storage and supply to the assembly line that would respond not only to the introduction of a new model but also to the possibility of future increases in model diversity. As such, in order to develop a feasible solution, the requirements for physical space, equipment, information systems and operators were taken into consideration. Concepts and theories related to layout, warehousing, sequencing, lean manufacturing and Methods-Time Measurement were considered as the underlying theoretical basis. Having determined the solution thought to be the most adequate, this was tested by considering two scenarios of production volumes which VW Autoeuropa hopes to attain in weeks 20 and 22. The new intermediate warehouse for engines and gearboxes performed well not only as regards the introduction of the new model but it also managed to provide flexibility and adaptability for future increases in model diversity.

Abstract:
As propostas apresentadas permitiram melhorar o layout do armazém e outros setores.
This work is part of the requirements for the Master course in Industrial Engineering, from the Department of Production and Systems of University of Minho. It describes a project developed for a company that distributes copiers and medium and large format printers and provides services in this area, the Amazoncopy. This work aimed the implementation of lean tools for optimization of the logistic processes in the company, mainly the processes associated with the warehouse, the reduction of management costs and performance improvement. This dissertation begins with a literature review where the importance of logistics as part of the supply chain is discussed, emphasizing the internal logistics processes of a company. One of the sectors of the logistics chain that attaches great importance is the warehouse, and all the associated processes required to operate correctly, being the basis for rapid and effective response to customers. Finally, to address some techniques of Lean Thinking, which are considered essential for the realization of this project. The analysis of the situation allowed to identify a lot of issues, in principal, the lack of standardization in some procedures, the lack of organization of the layout of the warehouse and the material, the lack of specific training of warehouse responsible, the great amount of obsolete materials, excessive costs with freights, the inappropriate identification of products and equipment and outdated computer systems. Concerning proposals and implementation of improvements, various techniques of Lean Thinking were used, in principal, the PDCA cycle, work organization technique 5S, visual management and continuous improvement. The proposals have improved the layout of the warehouse and other sectors. This yields significant improvements such as: gain of about 16% productivity in the process of preparing and packaging applications, reducing the stale material in a total of 5 tonnes with a consequent 36% in free space, reducing waiting time for maintenance machines for 4 days (57%), significant reductions in lead time modal transport air, approximately 36% and 26% river squeegee and 24% reduction of the average time spent in the separation material activities. To keep these results it is essential that there is continuous improvement of processes and warehouse space. The cost of implementing these proposals was around € 580.

Abstract:
To meet customer expectations, companies search excellence in an increasingly competitive environment. Planning the layout contributes to cost reduction, increased efficiency, and competitive advantage and, consequently, contributes to adding value to the product and to the company's profitability. This project is developed with Ferpinta Moçambique, a company in the steel industry that aims to increase both productivity and storage capacity of finished product. Therefore, alternatives to the current layout are proposed and storage structures are suggested for the finished product warehouses. In order to define the problem under study, the inbound and outbound processes of the manufacturing unit, its current layout and the main causes found are described. After analysing the collected data and having as support the prepared bibliographic review, three alternatives to the current layout are raised and evaluated. These proposals aim to increase storage areas, increase storage capacity of finished product, reduce distances traveled and prioritize shipping processes. With this project, it was possible to achieve a layout proposal which lead to a 35% reduction in distances traveled as well as a percentage increase of 17% in storage capacity by seeking an appropriate shelving for steel products. However, and in order to keep up with the current pace in which the company finds itself, a solution was also proposed that requires less financial and time investment, where mass storage is used.

Abstract:
This dissertation project, entitled “Warehouse project for an electrical motors company - WEGeuro's case”, was carried out at WEGeuro, a company that produces low, medium, and high voltage electric motors, with the objective of designing its new warehouse. In addition to presenting higher production levels than what its current capacity can withstand, the company is also expecting an increase in production levels for the upcoming years, which demanded the design of new facilities. The existing warehouse, located at WEGeuro's current facilities in Maia, no longer has sufficient storage capacity for the current production levels, with an occupancy rate of approximately 96% in the pallet storage area. The new warehouse project, located in Parque Empresarial da Ermida, next to the production unit of Santo Tirso, should have the capacity to support the company's operation until 2030, with an expected growth rate for the 2019-2030 period of around 72%. The project involved the identification of functional areas, definition of the warehouse layout, definition of locations of each area and stocks. Additionally, the various flows and processes of the warehouse were defined. Different types of equipment were also analysed, both for storage and product handling. Finally, a solution was presented that aimed at maximizing storage capacity and ensuring the total number of desirable pallet locations for 2030. This solution thus presents an increase of 118,7% in the number of locations compared to what currently exists in Maia's warehouse, both by increasing the area occupied by this section, as well as the use of height, going from 4 and 5 levels to 8. This solution also presented modernization in the equipment’s choice by selecting two automated vertical warehouses, which allows a reduction in the manual picking times of smaller parts by up to 75%.
