As volatility and customer demands increase, companies are simultaneously trying to reduce their logistic costs. Distribution centers are being forced to increase their agility and flexibility in order to rapidly execute on continuously evolving logistics plans. One proven way of gaining warehouse efficiency and create visibility into processes is through implementation of a Warehouse Management System (WMS) – a leverage technology that introduces automation in warehouse processes. With system directed task assignment work can be optimally balanced and distributed to available resources and auto-generate tasks with high quality. A critical aspect of this have shown to be prioritization of tasks in the dynamic terminal environment. To introduce a new work flow support into an existing organization requires changes in routines, roles and organization to harvest the real efficiency gains. In this report these problematics are applied to the distributing terminal of SCA Transforest, Tunadal, Sweden. A benchmarking study of a terminal in the same business, the Stora Enso terminal in Zeebrügge, Belgium, is the object of comparison. At the latter terminal system directed task assignment has been successfully implemented. Based on the findings from the benchmarking study and other research this report present important success factors as well as specific solutions to issues regarding automation, flexibility and process visibility - with the purpose to guide SCA Transforest in the future system development.

The storage and distribution of goods in warehouses have been around for centuries. Information systems and technology have enabled business to run various different functions, like accounting, successfully. Companies soon realised the additional benefits technology can bring to their operations. Increase in product throughput and increase in product range are some of the examples that add additional complexity to the warehousing and distribution functions. In order to cater for the additional complexity, to gain improved customer service levels and gain a strategic advantage in delivering the right product, in the right place at the right time, companies are implementing warehouse management systems (WMS). However, the WMS implementations are complex and involve various different stakeholders. Failed WMS implementations can negatively affect the operations. There are many risks associated with the WMS implementations and many companies have had to issue profit warnings in the past due to failed implementations. Various viewpoints on project success exist but this research report has aimed to provide a framework of key success criteria which organisations can use to evaluate the success of their implementation. Since WMS are generally rolled-out across various sites within a specific supply chain, measuring and evaluating the success of the first project can guide the project team to achieve more project success in the future, eliminating the risks associated with failed implementations. This study clearly defines the difference between project success, project management success, critical success factors and key success criteria. Literature on the topic is limited and therefore this study looked at various sources like peer-reviewed literature, popular literature and case studies. The findings of the report indicate that there is a list of ten different key success criteria which organisations can focus on in order to measure and improve their project success. Taking ownership, change management, managing stakeholder expectations, communication, training and testing are some of the key success criteria that were identified. This study concludes by presenting a framework which organisations can use to measure the success of their WMS implementation.

Nos dias de hoje, com o ambiente empresarial cada vez mais competitivo, a tecnologia de informação, quando bem utilizada, torna-se um importante diferencial entre as empresas na busca pela excelência no atendimento ao cliente. Desta forma, cada vez mais as empresas procuram alternativas para facilitar o gerenciamento de suas atividades, visando aumentar o controle, reduzir os custos e obter informações precisas que possam de fato agilizar a tomada de decisões e consequentemente melhorar o ní­vel do serviço prestado. O Sistema de Gestão de Armazéns (Warehouse Management System - WMS) vem sendo implementado principalmente pelos grandes operadores logí­sticos. A pesquisa realizada pela Booz Allen & Hamilton em parceria com o Centro de Estudos em Logí­stica em 2001 (CEL-Coppead) constatou que até 50% dos operadores logí­sticos pesquisados já utilizavam esta tecnologia (Costa et al., 2001). Dado o crescimento do uso do WMS, e a possibilidade por parte da autora de participar da implementação desta tecnologia em uma empresa durante o desenvolvimento de sua pesquisa de mestrado, os objetivos desta dissertação são: mapear a operação do Centro de Distribuição (CD) da Empresa Alfa antes da implementação do WMS; e analisar o processo de implementação de um WMS em um CD em operação. Como a autora fizera parte da equipe de implementação do WMS na Empresa Alfa, a metodologia utilizada para a elaboração desse trabalho incluiu: pesquisa bibliográfica, visitas in loco e entrevistas não estruturadas junto aos envolvidos na operação. O resultado desta dissertação é uma análise da operação antes e durante a implementação do WMS, aliado aos principais resultados extraí­dos pelas simulações, dado que até o presente momento o WMS ainda não se tornou uma realidade junto a Empresa Alfa devido a mudanças estratégicas no cronograma de implementação.
Nowadays, in a competitive business environment, when the information of technology is well used it becomes of a great value among companies that search for excellence in customer relationship attendance. Therefore, more and more often, the companies are searching for alternatives to ease the management of activities, increasing control, reducing costs and getting important information that can result in quicker decisions and consequently improve the level of the service. Recently, the WMS is being implemented in general by the biggest logistics operators. A Booz Allen & Hamilton´s research in partnership with the Center of Studies in Logistic in 2001 (CEL-Coppead) evidenced that up to 50% of the logistic operators have already been using this technology (Costa et al., 2001). Due to the growth of WMS use and the possibility for the author to participate in an implementation of this technology in a company during her Master Research, the objectives of this work are: to map the operation of the Alpha Company´s Distribution Center (DC) before WMS implementation; and analyze the WMS implementation process in a DC that is in operation. Since the author was part of the team in the implementation of WMS in the Alpha Company, the methodology used for the elaboration of this work included: bibliographical research, visits in loco to the Alpha Company´s DC and non structuralized interviews with the involved parts in the operation. As a result of this work, we have an analysis of the operation before and during the implementation of the WMS in line with the main results of the simulations, given that until the present moment, due to strategic changes in implementation chronogram the WMS still has not become a reality in the Alpha Company.

The increased demand on distribution centers to provide quicker turnarounds from receiving to shipping while maintaining precise inventory accuracies is spurring the acquisition of a warehouse management system (WMS) to improve operations and increase efficiency. With the rapid expansion of WMS technology, it seems inevitable that warehouses will outgrow inefficient operational processes and switch to a system that can accommodate rapid development. Research has explained the financial burdens and benefits of acquiring a WMS, but there’s been minimal research describing the impacts of the actual implementation. This study took place within a 600,000 sq. ft. fulfillment center and focused on the day-to-day activities of its 300+ employees. A qualitative methodology was used while observing daily processes within the inbound, inventory control, outbound, and shipping departments throughout the implementation process to determine the impacts on operational procedures and the people involved. The results describe the adaptations necessary within each department to transform the former manually based processes into automated processes that support the WMS. Also, the configurational oversights within the WMS that led to time consuming complications when performing daily operational tasks. The findings of this study explain the key factors that impact a WMS implementation and opportunities to increase the chances of a successful implementation.

Data warehouse system är något som har växt fram under 1990-talet och det har implementeras hos flera verksamheter. De källsystem som en verksamhet har kan integreras ihop med ett data warehouse system för att skapa en version av verkligheten och ta fram rapporter för beslutsunderlag. Med en version av verkligheten menas att det skapas en gemensam bild som visar hur verksamhetens dagliga arbete sker och utgör grundinformation för de framtagna analyserna från data warehouse systemet. Det blir därför väsenligt för verksamheten att de framtagna rapporterna håller en, enligt verksamheten, tillfredställande god datakvalitet. Detta leder till att datakvaliteten hos data warehouse systemet behöver hålla en tillräckligt hög kvalitetsnivå. Om datakvaliteten hos beslutsunderlaget brister kommer verksamheten inte att ta de optimala besluten för verksamheten utan det kan förekomma att beslut tas som annars inte hade tagits.

Att förbättra datakvaliteten hos data warehouse systemet blir därför centralt för verksamheten. Med hjälp av kvalitetsfilosofin Total Quality Management, TQM, har verksamheten ett stöd för att kunna förbättra datakvaliteten eftersom det möjliggör att ett helhetsgrepp om kvaliteten kan tas. Anledningen till att ta ett helhetsperspektiv angående datakvaliteten är att orsakerna till bristande datakvalitet inte enbart beror på orsaker inom själva data warehouse systemet utan beror även på andra orsaker. De kvalitetsförbättrande åtgärder som behöver utföras inom verksamheter varierar eftersom de är situationsanpassade beroende på hur verksamheten fungerar även om det finns mer övergripande gemensamma åtgärder.

Det som kommuniceras i form av exempelvis rapporter från data warehouse systemet behöver anses av verksamhetens aktörer som förståeligt och trovärdigt. Anledningen till det är att de framtagna beslutunderlagen behöver vara förståliga och trovärdiga för mottagaren av informationen. Om exempelvis det som kommuniceras i form av rapporter innehåller skräptecken bli det svårt för mottagaren att anse informationen som trovärdig och förståelig. Förbättras kvaliteten hos det kommunikativa budskapet, det vill säga om kommunikationskvaliteten förbättras, kommer datakvaliteten hos data warehouse systemet i slutändan också förbättras. Inom uppsatsen har det tagits fram riktlinjer för att kunna förbättra datakvaliteten hos data warehouse system med hjälp av kommunikationskvaliteten samt TQM. Riktlinjernas syfte är att förbättra datakvaliteten genom att förbättra kvaliteten hos det som kommuniceras inom företagets data warehouse system.

Det finns olika åtgärder som är situationsanpassade för att förbättra datakvaliteten med hjälp av kommunikationskvalitet. Ett exempel är att införa en möjlighet för mottagaren att få reda på vem som är sändaren av informationsinnehållet hos de framtagna rapporterna. Detta för att mottagaren bör ha möjlighet att kritisera och kontrollera den kommunikativa handlingen med sändaren, som i sin tur har möjlighet att försvara budskapet. Detta leder till att öka trovärdigheten hos den kommunikativa handlingen. Ett annat exempel är att införa inmatningskontroller hos källsystemen för att undvika att aktörer matar in skräptecken som sedan hamnar i data warehouse systemet. Detta leder till att mottagarens förståelse av det som kommuniceras förbättras.


The data warehouse system is something that has grown during the 1990s and has been implemented in many companies. The operative information system that a company has, can be integrated with a data warehouse system to build one version of the reality and take forward the decision basis. This means that a version of the reality creates a common picture that show how the company’s daily work occurs and constitutes the base of information for the created analysis reports from the data warehouse system. It is therefore important for a company that the reports have an acceptable data quality. This leads to that the data quality in the data warehouse system needs to hold an acceptable level of high quality. If data quality at the decision basis falls short, the company will not take the optimal decision for the company. Instead the company will take decision that normally would not have been taken.

To improve the data quality in the data warehouse system would therefore be central for the company. With help from a quality philosophy, like TQM, the company have support to improve the data quality since it makes it possible for wholeness about the quality to be taken. The reason to take a holistic perspective about the data quality is because lacking of the data quality not only depends on reasons in the data warehouse system, but also on other reasons. The measurement of the quality improvement which needs to perform in the company depends on the situation on how the company works even in the more overall actions.

The communication in form of for example reports from the data warehouse system needs to be understandable and trustworthy for the company’s actors. The reason is that the decision basis needs to be understandable and trustworthy for the receiver of the information. If for example the communication in form of reports contains junk characters it gets difficulty for the receiver of the information to consider if it is trustworthy and understandable. If the quality in the communication message is improving, videlicet that the communication quality improves, the data quality in the data warehouse will also improve in the end. In the thesis has guiding principles been created with the purpose to improve data quality in a data warehouse system with help of communication quality and TQM. Improving the quality in the communication, which is performed at the company’s data warehouse to improve the data quality, does this.

There are different measures that are depending on the situations to improve the data quality with help of communication quality. One example is to introduce a possibility for the receiver to get information about who the sender of the information content in the reports is. This is because the receiver needs to have the option to criticize and control the communication acts with the sender, which will have the possibility to defend the message. This leads to a more improved trustworthy in the communication act. Another example is to introduce input controls in the operative system to avoid the actors to feed junk characters that land in the data warehouse system. This leads to that the receivers understanding of the communication improves.

The thesis explores inventory management principles in the context of a storage capacity constrained warehouse. Amgen Inc. is building a new manufacturing facility in Singapore. Due to internal raw material warehouse capacity constraints, Amgen is evaluating the use of a 3rd Party Logistics (3PL) for additional warehousing space. The goal of this project is to recommend a raw material inventory strategy to reduce inventory levels and a 3PL operation guideline to ensure the availability of storage space and to minimize the transfers of raw material between Amgen and the 3PL. The project developed four inventory management methodologies to reduce raw material inventory in the context of a warehouse with a capacity constraint: I. Batch size optimization with an extension of the economic order quantity (EOQ) that adjusts batch size based on available warehouse space. 2. Safety stock reduction with the removal of demand variability by fixing the production schedule for 6 months. This results in a 10% inventory reduction by value and an 18% reduction in warehouse space usage. 3. Vendor managed inventory (VMI) with suppliers in Singapore to reduce inventory by 5%. 4. Maintaining commonality of disposable raw materials at 75% for new products that use the Manufacturing of the Future (MoF) platform to mitigate a 46% increase in room temperature warehouse space. As Amgen starts to use a 3PL, we recommend: 1. Use the 3PL in series with Amgen's warehouse to minimize raw material transfers. 2. Use the created warehouse model for 3PL operation guidelines. The model calculates the raw material requirements for a given production plan and recommends how to route the raw material and computes the space required for Amgen and the 3PL. 3. Use recommended key performance indicators to ensure data input into the warehouse model is accurate for correctly optimized results.

Atualmente, a Tecnologia da Informação (TI) tem assumido papel essencial para o alcance da administração eficiente, tanto no nível estratégico como no operacional, oferecendo benefícios para os negócios que incluem redução de custo, aumento da produtividade, qualidade, flexibilidade e inovação. E um dos recursos empregados é a implantação de um Sistema de Gestão de Armazéns, denominado Warehouse Management System (WMS), software que recebe as informações pertinentes ao armazém, gerando respostas para uma melhor movimentação, armazenagem, separação e expedição dos produtos, conforme as necessidades da organização. No entanto, a implantação de um sistema WMS pode ser considerada bem mais do que um projeto de tecnologia, que envolve mudanças estruturais e comportamentais, tornando-se um processo de risco relativamente alto e complexo. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar e planejar respostas aos riscos na implantação de um WMS no novo armazém de uma grande empresa brasileira do setor de cosméticos. Os resultados obtidos comprovaram inúmeras atividades que devem ser gerenciadas em favor do não comprometimento dos objetivos propostos da empresa, embora sabendo que o risco é algo incerto quanto à sua ocorrência. Ainda assim, para os futuros usuários do WMS, compreender a inclusão do gerenciamento de riscos nos seus projetos de implantação irá trazer maior probabilidade de sucesso, pois quanto mais forem conhecidos os riscos e as ações de mitigação, mais confiança e segurança as empresas terão em projetos desta natureza.
Currently, Information Technology (IT) has assumed crucial role for achieving the efficient administration at both the strategic and the operational, providing business benefits that include reducing costs, increasing productivity, quality, flexibility and innovation. And one of the resources used is the implementation of a Warehouse Management System, called Warehouse Management System (WMS) software that receives the relevant information to the warehouse, generating responses for improved handling, storage, picking and shipping of products as the organization s needs. However, the implementation of a WMS system can be considered much more than a technology project that involves structural and behavioral changes, becoming a process of relatively high risk and complex. This study aims to identify and plan responses to the risks of implementing a new WMS in the warehouse of a large company in the cosmetics industry. The results confirmed many activities that must be managed in favor of non-commitment of the proposed objectives of the company, while knowing that the risk is somewhat uncertain as to its occurrence. Still, for future users of the WMS, to understand the inclusion of risk management in their deployment projects will bring greater likelihood of success, because as more becomes known risks and mitigating actions, more confidence and security firms will take into projects of this nature.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to create a new system to measure and evaluate the productivity of warehouse processes in Euromedia books wholesale warehouse. The Warehouse management system (WMS) is implemented in the warehouse, so the company has information about processes within warehouse. However, the system does not have any tool to measure and report the productivity of individual workers and shifts. So the manager of the warehouse does not have enough data for efficient human resource management. The basics of warehousing and the warehousing interrelationships are described in theoretical part of the thesis. The processes within warehouse are firstly described in general and then with direct connection to processes in the warehouse of the company Euromedia. The analytical part is dedicated to detailed analysis of output data from WMS from the time period from February until May 2015.The outcome of this analysis is a suggestion how to assign individual workers to shifts, how to measure the productivity of individual processes and how the productivities of different processes can be compared. At the end of the thesis, there are recommendations how to measure the productivity now and how to proceed in the future to achieve a more precise outcome of the productivity measurement. The proposed measures contribute to better and more efficient human resources management in Euromedias wholesales warehouse.

Questo trattato ha l’obiettivo di presentare il progetto di avvio produttivo dal punto di vista dei flussi logistici di un sistema di riscaldamento innovativo per Ariston Group all’interno dello stabilimento di Albacina. Il percorso che verrà presentato parte dalla riorganizzazione del magazzino delle materie prime. L’obiettivo è quello di ottimizzare la gestione dello stock a magazzino e minimizzare i tempi di asservimento dei materiali alla linea di produzione. Il percorso prosegue presentando il funzionamento e l’implementazione del sistema di gestione delle scorte Warehouse Management System (WMS) alle altre linee di produzione dello stabilimento di Albacina. Tale sistema permette di conoscere in ogni momento la posizione precisa e la quantità di ogni materiale all’interno dello stabilimento. L’obiettivo finale del progetto consiste nel poter estendere l’utilizzo del WMS anche al sistema di riscaldamento innovativo. Per farlo è necessario avanzare tutti i codici delle materie prime di tale prodotto al sistema gestionale SAP utilizzato da Ariston Group. Tale avanzamento dei codici richiede una serie di passaggi che verranno presentati nella parte finale della trattazione. Ad oggi, alcuni componenti della BOM sono soggetti a modifiche da parte dell’R&D, non è quindi ancora possibile avanzare tutti i codici a SAP e implementare il WMS anche al sistema di riscaldamento innovativo. Si è però deciso di simulare questa implementazione, mostrando il lavoro che si dovrà realizzare e un’analisi dei costi e dei benefici che ne derivano.

This work is focused on the workload management of data warehouses based on Teradata technologies using Active System Management architecture. Objectives of this work are to characterize and analyze Active System Management architecture and types of rules, used in the workload management of Teradata data warehouses. These objectives have been achieved by a search of available resources and their subsequent analysis. Informations obtained from the analysis were empirically verified on a particular instance of a data warehouse and their synthesis is presented in this work The contributions of this work are in the documentation of technology that is currently not well known and widespread in the Czech Republic. Another contribution is identification of risks, drawbacks and presentation of recommendations in the workload management using Active System Management based on empirical tests. The repeatable implementation procedure based on induction has been proposed in the work. Maturity of the architecture for a production environment is evaluated. The work is hierarchically divided into several chapters that are dedicated to Teradata database technologies, workload management, Active System Management and implementation procedure. The first three chapters are focused on theory, however, they also contain practical informations related to the processed theory. The latter chapter is focused practically, therein is designed a repeatable Active System Management architecture implementation procedure.

A competitividade econômica tem levado as empresas a buscarem novas soluções através do uso de Tecnologia de Informação (TI) para alcançar vantagens competitivas frente a seus concorrentes. O uso da TI permite às empresas terem maior controle na gestão de seus processos e, com isso, obter ganhos de produtividade, redução de custos operacionais e satisfação dos clientes. O presente estudo tem como objetivo apresentar e analisar o processo de implementação de um Sistema de Gerenciamento de Armazéns – WMS em atividades logísticas em um centro de distribuição (CD). Será feito um estudo de caso, que consiste em uma avaliação pós-implementação do sistema em um centro de distribuição de medicamentos através de aplicação de um Sistema de Medição de Desempenho Logístico, a fim de identificar as melhorias e ganhos nas atividades de um armazém. Dentro desse contexto, são identificados também os riscos e as resistências na aplicação do WMS. A metodologia utilizada para esta dissertação é de natureza qualitativa, que consiste em revisão bibliográfica, e de caráter exploratório, mediante pesquisas de campo, visitas na empresa do estudo e entrevistas. O resultado deste estudo é uma análise da melhoria de desempenho após a aplicação do WMS, que constata vantagens da TI para a logística de distribuição como maior nível de acuracidade e redução de tempo.
The economic competitiveness has led companies to seek new solutions through the use of Information Technology (IT) to achieve competitive advantages over their competitors. The use of IT enables companies to have greater control in managing their processes and thereby achieve productivity gains, reduce operating costs and improve customer satisfaction. The present study aims to present and analyze the process of implementing a Warehouse Management System - WMS on logistics activities in a distribution center (DC). There will be a case study, consisting of a post-implementation review of the system in a distribution center for drugs through implementation of a Performance Measurement System Logistics in order to identify improvements and gains in the activities of a warehouse. Within this context, are also identified risks and resistance in the implementation of WMS. The methodology used for this thesis is qualitative in nature, consisting of a literature review, and exploratory character, through field research, visits to the company in the are study and interview. The result of this study is an analysis of performance improvement after applying WMS, noting advantages of IT for logistics distribution such as a higher level of accuracy and time reduction.

A warehouse management system shall handle warehousing operations with the aim of gaining control over the company's storage capacity and inventory management. It should support functions such as goods receiving, warehousing, order receiving and orderpicking. In order for a warehouse management system to function optimally, it must be designed for the company's operations. The purpose of this thesis work is to analyze the current warehouse management system and associated processes at IKEA After Sales. By analyzing the current situation, the improvement work will result in a development of current system or system replacement. In addition, an implementation plan will be presented for the chosen solution. The systems that have been analyzed are M3 and Astro. The research work began with a visit to IKEA After Sales where observations and interviews were conducted. The focus was on mapping how operations work today and where there is potential for a warehouse management system. A list of requirements was then presented to describe what functions a system should contain. The requirement list was discussed with responsible IT-workers for both systems. The survey showed that a lot of work is done manually and is dependent on competent employees. The research work resulted in an implementation of untapped functions in the already used system M3. The implementation plan focuses on Warehouse Mobility, inventory function and Wave Picking features with associated routines. The routines for how the business should work was designed to facilitate the workload after implementing the above functions.
Ett lagersystem ska hantera lagerverksamheten med syftet att skapa kontroll över företagets lagringskapacitet och lagerhantering. Systemet bör stödja funktioner som godsmottagning, lagerläggning, ordermottagning och plockorder. För att ett lagersystem ska fungera optimalt bör det vara utformat efter företagets verksamhet. Syftet med examensarbetet är att analysera det nuvarande lagersystemet med tillhörande processer på IKEA After Sales. Genom analys av nuläget ska förbättringsarbetet resultera i en förbättring av nuvarande lagersystem eller förslag på byte av system. Vidare ska en implementeringsplan presenteras för det valda lösningsförslaget. De system som har analyserats är M3 och Astro. Examensarbetet inleddes med ett besök på IKEA After Sales där observationer och intervjuer genomfördes. Fokus låg på att kartlägga hur verksamheten arbetar idag och var outnyttjad potential för ett lagersystem finns. En kravlista framställdes för att beskriva vilka funktioner som bör finnas i ett lagersystem. Kravlistan diskuterades med respektive IT-ansvarig för systemen. Kartläggningen visade att mycket arbete sker manuellt och är beroende av kompetent personal. Resultat av examensarbetet är förslag på en implementering av outnyttjade funktioner i det redan använda systemet M3. Implementeringsplanen fokuserar på funktionerna Warehouse Mobility, stöd för inventering och Wave Picking med tillhörande rutiner. Rutinerna för hur verksamheten bör arbeta har utformats för att underlätta arbetsmomenten efter att ovanstående funktioner har implementerats.

Supply chain management complexity is a growing challenge for a broad range of contemporary companies, which makes them turn to new and increasingly advanced IT-systems as a salvation. One of the currently most important system in a supply chain manager’s toolbox is the warehouse management system. As business challenges increases so does also the complexity in the investment processes surrounding the warehouse management systems, this paper explores value creation in these processes to understand the resource exchanges involved, the exchange actor’s different roles and the implications of interactions between the actors. This is conducted through a case study with a market leading warehouse management system vendor and a supply chain intensive customer. The findings indicate that value creation in a complex warehouse management system investment entails several intervened and ongoing processes of different resource exchanges, were the actors co-create value jointly by sharing, combining and utilizing the resources throughout these processes. In order to establish this essential value co-creation sphere, also social exchanges in the form of qualitative interactions between the actors have proven to be a fundamental factor.

Being able to perform good data analysis is a fundamental part of running any business or organization. One way of enabling data analysis is with a data warehouse system, a type of database that gathers and transforms data from multiple sources and structures it in the goal of simplifying analysis. It is commonly used to provide support in decision-making. Although a data warehouse enables data analysis, it is also relevant to consider how well the system supports analysis. This thesis is a qualitative research that aims to investigate how work domain analysis (WDA) can be used to evaluate the design of a data warehouse system. To do so, a case study at the IT company Norconsult Astando was performed. A data warehouse system was designed for an issue management system and evaluated using the abstraction hierarchy (AH) model. The research done in this thesis showed that analysis was enabled by adopting Kimball’s bottom-up approach and a star schema design with an accumulating snapshot fact table. Through evaluation of the design, it was shown that most of the design choices made for the data warehouse were captured in the AH. It was concluded that with sufficient data collection methods, WDA can be used to a large extent when evaluating a data warehouse system.

Sandvik Rock Tools is operating in a highly competitive market. This requires them to constantly improve the efficiency of their organization, in order for them to maintain their position as market leaders, both in a short-term and a long-term perspective. Sandvik Rock Tools is currently working on developing and further improving their supply chain. The supply chain is a key organizational function and improvements of the supply chain aim to yield benefits like lowered total costs and better utilized inventory levels. The purpose of our work has been to develop the supply chain between Sandvik’s in-market warehouse and their customer site at Dannemora. The main focus of this thesis has been to enable automatic data collection and to lower the stock levels at the customer site in Dannemora. This would be accomplished by improving the information flow between the two entities in the observed supply chain and by enabling real-time inventory information, easily accessible to the warehouse manager. A barcode system was implemented in the warehouse at the Dannemora customer site and was integrated with warehouse management software that was developed by the authors. The implemented barcode system and the warehouse management software were used at the Dannemora customer site for a period of two months. The effects of the implemented barcode system working in combination with the warehouse management software were observed in several operational areas after implementation, and the results were positive and beneficial. Firstly, the barcode system and warehouse management software simplified the warehouse manager’s decision process, by providing easy access to necessary warehouse management information, like realtime inventory information. Secondly, it made the day-to-day work routine of the warehouse manager easier, this being the case because the barcode system that had been implemented had digitalized and automated many tasks that had previously been performed manually by warehouse manager. An excellent example would be the simplified process for order placement and stocktaking. Thirdly, it improved the information flow between the Dannemora customer site and Sandvik’s in-market warehouse in Sandviken, thereby improving the overall effectiveness of the entire supply chain, through shared information. The barcode implementation successfully lowered inventory levels by six percent on average.

O estudo do Lean em contexto de armazém, conhecido por Lean Warehousing é relativamente recente na literatura. A procura por estratégias para que a organização se consiga manter no mercado, pode levar a estratégias de gestão como o Lean Management. O principal objetivo deste estudo é responder às lacunas existentes na literatura, mais especificamente a nível da implementação de práticas Lean em armazém através da resposta às seguintes questões de investigação, em que medida a implementação de práticas Lean em contexto de armazém podem melhorar o desempenho da organização, e quais os benefícios e barreiras que podem ocorrer ao longo de todo o processo. O estudo será conduzido através de Investigação-Ação, de forma a obter resultados mais próximos e conscientes da realidade que está a ser vivida no contexto em causa. Através do presente estudo, foi possível concluir que, a implementação de práticas Lean permitiu a redução do lead time em 3,13 dias, a organização do espaço e dos procedimentos de limpeza e métodos de trabalho mais organizados. Os principais benefícios identificados foram a melhoria da produtividade, da qualidade do serviço e da qualidade de vida dos trabalhadores. Os desafios face à implementação identificados estão relacionados com a mudança e adaptação necessárias durante a implementação do projeto e a comunicação entre equipas.
Lean Management attempts to remove waste, promotes continuous improvement, and brings value to the consumer. The study of Lean in warehouse context, well known as Lean Warehousing, is relatively new to the literature. The search for strategies that keep the company in the market, could lead to strategies like Lean. So, there is scientific relevance for the integrated study of the topics already mentioned. The principal goal of this study is to give an answer to the existent gaps, more specifically in terms of lean warehousing implementation, bearing in mind that there is still no standard model to follow. The focus remains on comprehending in what terms the implementation of Lean practices, in a warehouse context, can improve the performance of the company and which benefits, and barriers, could occur during the whole process. The study will be conducted through Action Research, to obtain results closer and more conscious of the reality that is being experienced in the context in question. Through this study, it was possible to conclude that the implementation of Lean practices allowed the reduction of lead time by 3.13 days, the organization of space and cleaning procedures and more organized work methods. The main benefits identified were the improvement in productivity, in the quality of service, and in the life's quality of the workers. The implementation challenges identified are related to the change and adaptation required during project implementation and communication between teams.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o sistema de informação do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto USP a fim de identificar quais são os problemas que afetam a geração de informações gerenciais no nível estratégico, bem como a elaboração do plano de desenvolvimento e etapas necessárias para a construção de um sistema de informações gerenciais. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica de publicações como: livros, artigos, dissertações de mestrado e teses de doutorado, acerca de Sistemas de Informações, Sistemas de Informações Gerenciais, Sistemas de Informações Hospitalares, Inteligência de Negócios, Gestão em Saúde e Gestão Hospitalar. Numa primeira etapa foi feita a leitura dos resumos dos estudos encontrados, a fim de averiguar a adequação desses estudos aos objetivos deste trabalho. Na segunda, foi feita a leitura integral dos trabalhos que foram selecionados na primeira, onde foi observada a coerência entre proposta, metodologia e resultados de tais trabalhos. Na terceira, foi elaborado um plano de desenvolvimento e etapas necessárias para a construção de um sistema de informações gerenciais para algumas áreas de negócio do hospital. Na última década, pelo menos nas grandes corporações de saúde e em alguns poucos hospitais de menor porte do país este panorama experimentou um crescimento bastante expressivo. O processo de informatização hospitalar é bastante complexo, principalmente em um hospital universitário que além de assistência a saúde trabalha em prol do ensino e pesquisa. Um sistema de informação hospitalar é concebido a fim de atuar e contribuir em três níveis hierárquicos: operacional, gerencial e estratégico. O hospital possui um sistema de informação integrado composto de quatro dezenas de sub-sistemas integrados. Os gastos do hospital, levados por diversos fatores, são cada vez maiores. Seria necessário um incremento no montante dos recursos alocados como também uma racionalidade na aplicação dos mesmos. Os gestores devem conseguir aumentar a produtividade a fim de alcançar maiores níveis de cobertura para satisfazer as necessidades dos usuários dos serviços de saúde. Fica evidente a necessidade de transformar dados em informações para a tomada de decisões gerenciais. Grande parte dos dados que necessitamos está armazenada nos sub-sistemas do HCFMRP, porém transformá-los em informações não é tarefa fácil. Não há nada de errado com estes sistemas e seus bancos de dados operacionais, os mesmos em primeira instância foram criados para dar suporte aos processos da empresa e suas operações, seus dados estão armazenados de maneira pormenorizada, ou seja, nos mínimos detalhes, prejudicando assim outras funções como apoio a tomada de decisão gerencial. Torna-se necessário à existência de um ambiente propício para consultas específicas com acessos rápidos e disponibilidade de informações. A fim de vencer este desafio a tecnologia de Data Warehouse se apresenta como alternativa para simplificar, agilizar e qualificar o processo de apoio à tomada de decisão gerencial.
This research has for objective to analyze the Information System of the Clinical Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (HCFMRP-USP) to identify the problems that affects the information generation at the strategic level, as well as the elaboration of a development plan and the phases needed to construct a Management Information System. This researched was based on bibliographic review of books, articles, dissertations, theses, and other source that were related to Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Hospitals Information Systems, Business Intel ligence, Health Management and Hospital Management. This work was divided into phases. The first phase of this work was the reading of the summary of the found material to verify the fitnesses of this study to the main objective of this research. The second was the full reading of the original material selected in the first phase. In this moment was observed the coherence between the proposal, the methods and the results of such works. In the third phase was developed a plan to create a Management Information System for specifics areas in the hospital, and the phases to build it was defined. In this last decade, at least in largest health corporation and in some small hospital of Brazil this scenery experienced an expressive growth. The hospital\'s informatization process is very complex, especially in university hospital in which besides taking care of health problems it has to deal with teaching and research. A hospital information system is design to contribute to three hierarchy levels: operational, management and strategic. The hospital (HCFMRP-USP) has an integrated information system that has for dozen of integrated subsystems. The amount spent by the hospital is increased by different factors. Would be necessary to increase the allocated resources as well as a better rationale to use them. The managers must increase the productivity in order to achieve greater levels of coverage to satisfy the client\'s needs for better healthy services. It is evident the need to transform data in information to support management decisions. Great part of the data that are needed is stored in subsystems at HCFMRP, but to turn them into information isn\'t as simple as it may seem. There is nothing wrong with this system or its operational database. They were developed to support the corporation and its operations, and the data are stored in such structured detailed that doesn\'t support, as it should, management decisions. This is one of the main arguments why there is the need of an ambient that will provide faster and specific access to information and the data warehouse technology has provide some alternative to speed up and qualify the process to support management decision.

L'incremento delle vendite e allo stesso tempo il mantenimento dell'alto livello di servizio da garantire al cliente in termini di disponibilità dei codici e puntualità della consegna, sono due condizione che richiedono un innovazione di tipo radicale. Twenty first century manufacturing is characterized by customer specific products. Customers expect greater differentiation in the products that companies offer to them, thus changing the whole landscape of production. Greater the variety of products being offered to customers, greater is the complexity of shop floor operations. This complexity is translated to all the operations in the shop floor including material handling and inventory control. To overcome this situation, many manufacturers have turned to “Lean Manufacturing” to gain a competitive edge in the market by reducing costs and improving productivity in all operations throughout the shop floor. Therefore, this purpose of this thesis is to analyze the material handling of a highly customized multi-variant product-based production system. The thesis represents a case study that was done at a caravan manufacturing company in Tenhult, Sweden. During the study, data was gathered from field notes, observations and multiple semi-structured interviews. The findings were analyzed with respect to a theoretical background which was generated through an extensive literature review that was carried out throughout the research. Our analysis was based on a systems approach where the findings were categorized into three dimensions that affect material handling and inventory control. These dimensions are warehouse management systems, culture, and production management, which contribute to successful implementation of lean into the material handling operations and inventory control. In conclusion, the results show that efficient material handling and inventory control can only be achieved by finding a synergy between technology, people and organization. Our results also show that soft issues like organizational culture and employee culture need to be addressed along with technological issues because only when an alignment between people, technology and business objectives and values is achieved, lean implementation can be successful. Abstract:
Performance management of engineering education emerges from the need to assure proper training of future engineers in order to meet the constantly evolving expectations and challenges for the engineering profession. The process of accreditation ensures that engineering graduates are adequately prepared for their professional careers and responsibilities by ensuring that they possess an expected set of mandatory graduate attributes. Engineering programs are required by accreditation bodies to have systematic performance management of their programs that informs a continuous improvement process. Unfortunately, the vast diversity of engineering disciplines, varieties of information systems, and the large number of actors involved in the process makes this task challenging and complex. We performed a systematic literature review of jurisdictions around the world who are doing accreditation and examined how universities across Canada, US and other countries, have addressed tool support for performance management of engineering education. Our initial systematic approach for tool supported performance management evolved from this, and then we refined it through an iterative process of combined action research and design science research. We developed a prototype, Graduate Attribute Information Analysis (GAIA) in collaboration with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa, to support a systematic approach for accreditation of three engineering programs. This thesis contributes to research on the problem by developing a systematic approach, a tool that supports it, a set of related data transformations, and a tool-assessment checklist. Our systematic approach for tool-supported performance management addresses system architecture, a common continuous improvement process, a common set of key performance indicators, and identifies the performance management forms and reports needed to analyze graduate attribute data. The data transformation and analysis techniques we demonstrate ensure the accurate analysis of statistical and historical trends.

Il caso presentato nell’elaborato tratta della riprogettazione dei processi logistici nel contesto di un’azienda del settore ceramico. A fronte del notevole incremento della domanda registrato, la gestione delle attività relative alla preparazione degli ordini per i carichi e dell’operatività all’interno dell’ufficio spedizioni risultava inadatta a volumi in forte crescita, affetta tra troppe inefficienze e sprechi. Era necessaria una riprogettazione radicale, che passasse soprattutto attraverso i sistemi informativi utilizzati quotidianamente, i quali erano ormai inadeguati per fronteggiare un ulteriore aumento dei volumi previsto per questo anno. Per rendere ciò possibile è stato individuato nel Lean Thinking un fondamento teorico imprescindibile grazie ai cui principi e strumenti sarebbe stato possibile delineare un percorso orientato all’efficientamento e al raggiungimento degli obiettivi prefissati. L’intenzione del progetto è quella di arrivare ad essere in grado di sostenere i ritmi imposti dal mercato aumentando la capacità di spedizione, massimizzare il livello di servizio per il cliente finale e i trasportatori, instaurare un sistema di logica Pull di avviamento delle attività ed automatizzare tutte le operazioni manuali. Per ottenere questi risultati si è partiti dall’introduzione di un nuovo WMS, inserendo anche il concetto di Priorità degli ordini. Successivamente, è stato implementato l’utilizzo di un Loading Management System (LMS), ossia una piattaforma online dove i trasportatori possono effettuare le prenotazioni per il ritiro della merce, permettendo di definire razionalmente la priorità delle preparazioni e andando a strutturare un sistema di avviamento dei processi logistici di tipo Pull. Nella seconda fase del progetto, il sistema di accesso al piazzale di carico con le pese è stato inizialmente automatizzato, per poi integrarlo con il LMS e rendere automatico l’ingresso di tutti i mezzi con prenotazione di ritiro e autorizzati.

In economically turbulent times, Business Intelligence (BI) is increasingly being used to mitigate risk and increase certainty. The evolution of BI from a series of technologies to a platform for supporting strategies is analyzed in this thesis. The concentration is on how BI can streamline manufacturing, quality assurance, marketing and customer service are evaluated, as are the potential payoffs of increasing the level of insight an organization has. The thesis also includes analysis of how the more complex value chain processes including build-to-order, configure-to-order and quote-to-order can be made more efficient and profitable through the inclusion of BI and its associated analytics and technologies. The inclusion of the Delphi research technique makes this paper unique and strong in its content as well. The role of BI has shifted from being used in specific functional areas of an organization to being strategic in scope. The intent of this thesis is to evaluate its contributions to the customer-facing processes that are the most complex and most challenging to sustain, making BI an indispensible platform for their successful execution on the base of theories and practical experience of the BI experts.

Il presente lavoro di tesi verterà sulla creazione di un’Energy Management System in grado di soddisfare le esigenze delle imprese sia lato manufacturing che utilities. Nel primo capitolo oltre ad un‘introduzione al tema dell’EMS, verrà descritta la figura dell’Energy manager e fatta una panoramica sulla parte normativa in merito, cioè la ISO 50001 e la direttiva 2012/27/UE. Nel secondo capitolo verrà rimarcata l’importanza dei dati, in particolare verranno descritti nel dettaglio i temi della Business Intelligence, i Big Data, l’Internet of Things e la Predictive Analytics. Nel terzo capitolo poi verrà descritto il software utilizzato per l’analisi dei dati e lo sviluppo dell’EMS, che nella fattispecie è SAP, un gestionale utilizzato nelle medie e grandi aziende e che gestisce praticamente qualunque area interna all’impresa. Di esso dopo una breve introduzione, ci si focalizzerà sui tools SAP per la gestione energetica e si descriveranno i moduli utilizzati lungo tutto il percorso di tesi. Nel quarto capitolo, infine, attraverso un ciclo PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), descriveremo le diverse fasi del progetto di creazione dell’Energy Management System, che partirà nella fase di pianificazione con la definizione dei KPI e la ricerca delle query. In seguito, nella fase del “fare”, verranno definiti i collegamenti tra le informazioni contenute nelle diverse query e si passerà alla creazione delle tabelle e dei collegamenti tramite join delle stesse. Nella fase di monitoraggio, verranno attuate le analisi sui dati, in modo da comprendere dove risiedono le problematiche maggiori e come superarle o intervenire per correggerle. Infine nella fase di attuazione, i dati, le tabelle, le analisi e le soluzioni alle problematiche verranno riportate all’interno di un’applicazione web customizzata per la gestione energetica, in modo da rendere per il cliente di facile lettura e veloce il monitoraggio d’impianto e da indirizzarli su eventuali azioni correttive da apportare.

Diploma thesis deals with the application of principles and tools of business intelligence in the management and control process of the hospital facilities. In term of the definition of problem areas in the management and control process of the hospital is proposed concept of streamlining the current state, which consists of the methodological unification of the main control and managing areas, in the implementation of consolidated data structure (data warehouse) and reporting tool above the primary systems. Practical application of the analyzed areas is demonstrated in the practical part of diploma thesis, which is devoted to the real implementation of management information system in five regional hospitals in the Czech Republic. The main benefit of this thesis is the definition of the problem areas in the management and control process of hospital facilities, which can be made more effective by applying the principles and tools of business intelligence, and personal appreciation of the author's practical experience with the implementation of business intelligence solutions in healthcare facilities.

Det har skett mycket de senaste åren inom tillverkningsindustrin. Kundanpassning med olika tillbehör och önskemål sätter press på företags förmåga att producera. En effektiv och noggrann hantering samt lagring av gods är en förutsättning för att förbli konkurrenskraftig. Det är väsentligt med lagerstyrning för kontroll av verksamhetens in- och utflöden i syfte att uppnå lönsamhet och hög kundnöjdhet. Hallberg-Rassy är skandinaviens största företag inom skeppsbyggnad som alltid levererat i tid. Med en ökad efterfråga och hantering av gods är lagerstyrningen viktig för att bevara kvaliteten. Företaget har uppmärksammat en misshantering av artiklar i främst höglagret som är i behov av ett förbättringsarbete.   Företaget har ett stort centrallager som styrs av affärssystemet Navision. Problemet är att det befintliga affärssystemet inte kan utnyttjas till samtliga lager i verksamheten. Detta för att affärssystemet anpassats för mycket till centrallagret vilket resulterar i att systemets modul inte kan appliceras till företagets höglager. I dagsläget styrs höglagret av ett manuellt system i form av pärmar, där hanteringen leder till missvisande lagersaldon. Vi har med intervjuer och observationer av företaget samt framtagning av relevant teori, tagit reda på vilka faktorer som är anledningen till att manuella lagerrutiner bibehållas. Även vilka åtgärder som ska vidtas för att integrera manuella lagerrutiner i ett modernt lagerstyrningssystem. Men också undersökt vilka komplikationer en sådan övergång medför. Vi kom fram till att Hallberg-Rassy är kvar i manuella lagerrutiner för att integreringen i ett modernt lagerstyrningssystem medför stora kostnader med motstånd och rädsla från arbetarna. Denna integrering kan även medföra eventuella risker för en bristande kunskap av den nya modulen i affärssystemet. Detta sätter krav på utbildning för att upprätthålla hög arbetsmoral som främjar rätt indata till den nya modulen i affärssystemet.
A lot has happened in recent years in the manufacturing industry. Customization with different accessories and wishes puts pressure on companies' ability to produce. Efficient and accurate handling and storage of goods is a prerequisite for staying competitive. It is essential to have inventory management for control of the company's inputs and outflows in order to achieve profitability and high customer satisfaction. Hallberg-Rassy is Scandinavia's largest shipbuilding company that always delivers on time. With increased demand and handling of goods, inventory management is important in order to preserve quality. The company has a large central warehouse that is controlled by the business system Navision, but the problem is that the existing business system cannot be used for all the warehouses in the business. The business system has been adapted too much to the central warehouse, which means that the system cannot be applied to the company's other warehouse. Today is the other warehouse controlled by a manual system in the form of binders, where the handling entails a misleading stock balance. With interviews and observations of the company as well as the development of relevant theory, we’ve found out which factors that are the reasons manual inventory routines are retained. Also, which approach should be taken to integrate manual warehouse routines into a modern warehouse management system. We also investigated the complications of such a transition result. We concluded that Hallberg-Rassy remain the manual storage routines because integration to a modern warehouse management system causes high costs with resistance and fear from the workers. This integration can also pose potential risks for lack of knowledge of the new module in the business system. This requires training to maintain a high work ethic that promotes the right input to the new module in the business system.

A partir deste problema, este trabalho propõe a estruturação de um modelo de Data Warehouse com o objectivo de organizar, armazenar e integrar as informações provenientes de outros formatos e sistemas, numa única base de dados para uma futura utilização no suporte à tomada de decisão. Existem, neste momento, na comunidade de Data Warehousing duas principais abordagens, uma preconizada por William H. Inmon, mais centrada nos dados, e outra por Ralph Kimball, mais centrada no projecto. Assim, com a metodologia proposta foi desenvolvido um caso de estudo com a finalidade de verificar e avaliar a aplicabilidade da metodologia no Instituto Politécnico de Tomar; ABSTRACT: One difficulty that exists in the extraction of information in organizations is the lack of integration of existing data scattered in various formats: word processing files, spreadsheets, databases, among other sources. From this problem, this paper proposes to structure a model of Data Warehouse in order to organize, store and integrate information from other systems and formats in a single database for future use in supporting decision making. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are today two common ways to expand and grow businesses. However, studies report that around 50-75% of all M&A transactions fail to yield expected results. This study focuses on the value creation realized in the post merger integration. During the post merger integration, organizational structures, IT systems and work routines need to change and integrate in order to achieve the desired synergies. Often when processes need to change or new ways of working are implemented, artifacts are utilized to facilitate the change. However, managers often fail to recognize the social perspective of organizational change. This study analyzes how a warehouse management system was used in a post merger integration to drive organizational change and establishing a common way of working between employees from different companies. The researchers have conducted a case study at a private equity firm that recently acquired and merged six companies in the fast moving consumer goods industry. As part of the case study, interviews and observations were made. This thesis presents two main results. First, that the choice to adopt a system-first-approach and neglecting human and task integration in the PMI resulted in several obstacles. The case company focused solely on system integration to realize the most obvious synergies of the different companies. This caused employee resistance and lack of trust and confidence towards managers and their intentions. It also yielded an ungiving and unhelping culture between employees that previously belonged to different companies. This indicates the importance of mixing employees from different companies after the merger. Moreover, the importance of creating cultural-unity under one brand is discussed. The results indicate that there should be a balance between human integration and task integration when merging several companies. Consequently, we present a two-by-two matrix that outlays the dependency of company characteristics on integration focus. Secondly, managers at the case company put too much faith and emphasis on artifacts and systems to change organizational behavior and neglected the perspective of sociomaterialism. This resulted in a failed implementation of the warehouse management system due to neglecting the employees’ perspective and ways of working. As a result, employees developed workarounds to the system and later abandoned the system. Consequently, managers should have adopted a technochange perspective when driving organizational change with IT systems. This means that the implementation of an IT system should be consider in conjunction with employees and their routines.
Fusioner och förvärv är två vanliga metoder som idag används av företag för att växa och ta nya marknadsandelar. Trots detta visar studier att 50-75% av alla förvärv misslyckas med att realisera förväntade synergier. Denna uppsats fokuserar på värdeskapandet som sker i integrationsfasen efter sammanslagningen. Under integrationsfasen integreras IT system, arbetsprocesser samt organisationsstrukturer för att realisera synergier. I samband med att företag ändrar på arbetsrutiner brukar artefakter användas för att stödja förändringsarbetet. Denna uppsats studerar hur företag kan använda sig av IT system under integrationsfasen för att driva förändring samt för att etablera ett gemensamt arbetssätt hos anställda med olika företagsbakgrunder. Denna uppsats är skriven tillsammans med ett riskkapitalbolag som tidigare köpt upp och slagit ihop sex företag inom industrin för snabbrörliga konsumentvaror. Som en del av fallstudien utfördes intervjuer och observationer på portföljbolaget. I denna uppsats presenteras två huvudresultat. Det första; bristen av fokus på integration av anställda från olika bolag ger upphov till motstånd och lågt förtroende till beslutsfattande. Det resulterade även i en fientlig och icke-hjälpande kultur mellan anställda med olika företagsbakgrunder. Resultaten påvisar vikten av att blanda anställda från olika företag i nya arbetssätt för att skapa tillhörighet och hjälpsamhet. Resultaten indikerar också att det är viktigt att ha ett gemensamt varumärke som alla anställda kan ställa sig bakom. Därför diskuteras balansen mellan integrering av anställda samt processer i en sammanslagning. I uppsatsen presenterar vi en två-gånger-två matris för att illustrera förhållandet mellan ett företags industriella karaktärsdrag samt integreringsfokus. Det andra huvudresultat visar att ledning samt styrelse hade för stort förtroende på artefakter för att förändra organisationellt beteende, det sociomaterilaistiska perspektivet följdes inte. Detta resulterade i en misslyckad implementering av ett IT system som ämnade att förändra beteendet hos anställda och realisera synergier. Anledningen hänvisas till försummelsen av de anställdas perspektiv samt arbetssätt. Detta resulterade i att de anställda utvecklade egna lösningar och i ett senare skede slutade använda systemet helt och hållet. Följaktligen borde företaget ha anammat ett “technochange” perspektiv för att driva förändring genom IT system inom företaget. Detta innebär att IT systemet måste ses som ett ekosystem tillsammans med anställda och arbetsprocesser, inte som ett självständigt system.

MSB, myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap, är en svensk myndighet vars uppgift är att hjälpa till vid kriser och katastrofer samt att informera samhället för att vara mer förberedda inför katastrofer. För att kunna agera snabbt har MSB ett stort lager med materiel. En av de mest frekventa produktgrupperna som används är profilkläderna. I nuläget beställs profilkläderna främst baserat på magkänsla och det finns inte så mycket tanke bakom beställningarna. MSB vill nu förbättra sin lagerstyrning för att få en mer effektiv lagerhållning. Målet med detta arbete är därmed att skapa ett lagerstyrningssystem för MSB:s profilkläder. För att genomföra arbetet samlades data gällande inköp och efterfrågan in från MSB:s lagersystem. Denna data bearbetades sedan genom att den delades in i intervall och analyserades. För respektive produkt analyserades efterfrågemönster. Det beräknades även totalt antal uttagna produkter, medelvärdet för efterfrågan under en ledtidsperiod, standardavvikelsen för efterfrågan under en ledtidsperiod, årsefterfrågan, ekonomisk orderkvantitet, säkerhetslager, beställningspunkt och återfyllnadsnivå utifrån vissa antaganden. Dessa metoder analyserades för att identifiera det mest fördelaktiga lagerstyrningssystemet för MSB:s profilkläder. Även olika principer för prognostisering behandlades för att utreda hur den framtida efterfrågan av dessa produkter borde prognostiseras. Rekommendationen som tagits fram genom beräkningarna och analysen är att MSB bör använda sig av ett återfyllnadssystem för beställning av profilkläder. I MSB:s fall innebär detta att lagernivån ska undersökas två gånger om året och de olika profilkläderna ska sedan beställas upp till en förutbestämd nivå baserat på historisk efterfrågan och säkerhetslagret. I MSB:s fall bedömdes säkerhetslagret som extra viktigt eftersom efterfrågan är väldigt ojämn och osäker. Att ha ett större säkerhetslager bidrar bland annat till högre kostnader men i MSB:s fall anses en hög beredskap vara viktigare än att minimera kostnaderna.

As atividades logísticas foram desde sempre dependentes de informação. Esta realidade não mudou. Contudo, acentuou-se ao longo do tempo com a necessidade de informação exata e em tempo real. Para tal, as empresas de atividades logísticas deparam-se com a necessidade de avaliar os seus sistemas de gestão de informação, decidindo estrategicamente os investimentos sobre os mesmos. O presente trabalho de projeto debruça-se sobre a avaliação da adequação de um sistema de gestão de armazenamento às operações. Fá-lo através da adaptação de uma matriz para avaliação da adequação do sistema de gestão de armazenamento aos processos, a qual permite comparar as avaliações atribuídas. Esta matriz é composta por 11 processos, para os quais é avaliada a adequação do sistema atual, e a adequação desejada num horizonte de dois anos. Os dados recolhidos permitiram concluir quais os processos mais críticos em que a empresa terá de investir. Através da combinação dos dados recolhidos, com as sessões de trabalho em grupo e visitas aos armazéns, foi possível identificar diversas falhas extra sistema. O presente trabalho de projeto mostra o exemplo de uma empresa que percecionava deter um sistema mais adequado às suas operações do que o que foi demonstrado no estudo, demonstrando a importância da avaliação dos sistemas de informação.
Logistics activities have always been dependent on information. This reality has not changed. However, it has been accentuated arisen over time with the need for accurate information and in real time. To do this, logistics companies are faced with the need to evaluate their information management systems, making strategic decisions about its investments. This research project focuses on assessing the suitability of a warehouse management system. It does so by adapting a matrix for assessing the adequacy of the warehouse management system to its processes, which allows a comparison with the resulting ratings. This matrix is composed of 11 processes, for which the adequacy of the current system is assessed, as well as the desired adequacy on a two year horizon. The data collected permits to point the most critical processes in which the company will have to invest. By combining the data collected with group work sessions and visits to the warehouses, it was possible to identify several extra system failures. This work shows the example of a company that thought it held a system that was best suited to its operations than the one that was shown in the study, thus demonstrating the importance of evaluating the information systems.

Syftet är också att identifiera brister i Emballator Lagan Plasts nutida spårbarhetslösning, tillämpa ramverket för att välja en lämplig automatisk identifieringsteknik och utforma en bättre framtida spårbarhetslösning.  Metod: Denna studie är baserad i kvalitativ forskningsmetod och inkluderar en systematisk litteraturstudie, en intervjustudie och en fallstudie. Data till första forskningsfrågan insamlades genom en systematisk litteraturstudie och en intervjustudie med expert inom automatiska identifieringstekniker. Data till forskningsfråga två insamlades genom intervjuer med anställda hos Emballator Lagan Plast tillsammans med vetenskapliga artiklar.  Resultat: Genom att analysera data från den systematiska litteraturstudien gentemot data från intervjustudien sammanställdes ramverket för val av automatisk identifieringsteknik. Baserat på intervjuer med anställda identifierades brister i den nuvarande spårbarhetslösningen hos Emballator Lagan Plast. Ramverket tillämpades sedan för att välja automatisk identiferingsteknik som en del av den framtida spårbarhetslösningen. Den framtida spårbarhetslösningen baseras på 2D-streckkoder, förändringar i lagerhanteringsprocesserna samt mer utnyttjande av det tillgängliga lagerhanteringsystemet.
Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to create a framework for manufacturing companies to facilitate the choice of auto-id technology. The purpose is also to identify faults in the current traceability solution at Emballator Lagan Plast, apply the framework to choose an auto-id technology and to suggest the future traceability solution.  Method: This thesis is based on qualitative method and includes a systematic literature review, an interview study and a case study. For research question one data was gathered through a systematic literature review and through an interview with an expert in the field of auto-id technologies. For research question two data was gathered through interviews with employees at Emballator Lagan Plast together with scientific articles.  Results: By analysing data from the systematic literature review and the interview the framework for choosing an auto-id technology was established. Based on interviews with employees’ faults in the current traceability solution at Emballator Lagan Plast was identified. The framework was applied to choose an auto-id technology as a part of the future traceability solution. The future traceability solution consists of 2D-barcodes, changes in warehouse processes and increased utilization of the warehouse management system.

Bakgrund: För att företag ska kunna tillgodose kundernas efterfrågan har de oftast ett färdigvarulager med produkter för att snabbt kunna leverera till kunder. Det blir därmed viktigt för företagen att maximera lagret och dess utformning. Användningen av lagret bör ske på ett sådant sätt att lagerhållningskostnaderna och lagerhanteringskostnaderna minimeras.  Syfte: Syftet med detta examensarbete är att göra en nulägesbeskrivning på Beds by Scapa över hur färdigvarulagret för bäddmadrasser och huvudgavlar är uppbyggt samt identifiera utmaningar och se om det finns möjligheter till förbättringar kring lagerhantering. Metod: Denna studie utgår från en kvalitativ och kvantitativ forskningsmetod. Då studien utgår från teoretisk förförståelse kommer kritisk realism tillämpas. Studien är en fallstudie där empirisk material är inhämtat från observationer och intervjuer som har varit både ostrukturerade och semistrukturerade. När det gäller kvantitativa forskningsmetoden har data från affärssystemet inhämtats och mätningar utförts.  Slutsats: Studien har genom en nulägesanalys identifierat utmaningar och förbättringsförslag som existerar för sektionerna bäddmadrasser och huvudgavlar. Två olika alternativ har presenterats och det första innebär att använda ABC-kategorisering och det andra innebär att förbättra familjegruppsindelningen som redan används.
Background: In order for companies to meet customer demand, they usually have a finished goods inventory of products to quickly deliver to customers. It thus becomes important for companies to maximize the stock and its design layout. The use of the warehouse should be done in such a way that the storage costs and handling costs are minimized. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to present a current status report of how Beds by Scapas finished inventory of bed mattresses and headboards is constructed within the warehouse, and to identify if there are any challenges and see if there are opportunities for improvements in inventory management. Method: This study is based on a qualitative and quantitative research method. Since the study is based on theoretical understanding, critical realism will be applied. The study is a case study in which empirical material is obtained from observations and interviews that have been both unstructured and semi-structured. When it comes to the quantitative method, data has been collected from the ERP system and measurements has been carried out.  Conclusion: The study has identified a challenge and improvement suggestions that exist for the bed mattresses and headboard sections through a current situation analysis. Two different alternatives have been presented where the first alternative is to use ABC-categorization and the second alternative is to improve the family grouping that is already in place.

Abstract:
Subway is the leading fast food franchise chain having over 29.700 branches in 87 countries and differentiating itself among other fast foods by serving healthy food. The chain's focus for further development is concentrated on the countries in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Croatia) and its 47 branches. However, the concept of supply chain in this region is disunited and leads to unfair high costs and high requirements from the branch management. Therefore there is an urgent need to unite the logistic system. The idea is that all the branches in the region will keep two or three local suppliers providing delivery of vegetables, drinks and local specialties; other goods will be distributed by single logistics company in the form of consolidated supply. The new logistic concept for provision of availability of products needed for proper work of all Subway branches in Central and Eastern Europe in context of integration, unification and simplification of logistic chains and its effective management is suggested in the work from the logistic service provider point of view. The task is solved in three parts -- transportation of goods from the producers to the warehouse, its delivery to individual branches, and warehouses itself including the cost calculations. The analysis of supplier's location and the location of supplied branches conclusion follows on locating the warehouse unit near Prague. The kinds of goods could be divided into frozen, cooled, dry and non-food goods. The consumption of individual kinds of goods is specified and the process of supplying the warehouse, means of transport, number of drivers, consolidation on distribution routes and its frequency is suggested. The supply of 47 branches will be done with special means of transport with combined shipping space enabling separate transport of individual kinds of goods by using the mobile screens; on 5 routes always between 7:00 to 23:00 in every country on the same day. The warehouse is a key place for delivery consolidation according to the needs of individual branches in accordance with FIFO principle. About 70 different articles of goods are stocked in three parts; respectively in truss racks with longitudinal filling with capacity of 168 pallet spaces in the height of 4 pallets. The manipulation is provided by low-lift and high-lift trucks. The limit warehouse is rectangular with the area of 122.4 m2, Monthly cost are 485,- Kč for pallet space, the costs in the frozen and cooled warehouse are higher by 15,-Kč per pallet space, that is 500,- Kč. The total costs to supply all the Subway branch restaurants in the whole region is the total sum of costs for good acquisition, its transfer from suppliers to the warehouse, warehouse operations and distribution of goods to individual branches.

Pre-democratic South Africa was highly regulated by the apartheid government with the black small-scale farming community actively marginalised. Following the deregulation of the South African agricultural market came the opening up of the market to accommodate these small-scale farmers and also the introduction of South African Futures Exchange. South Africa has done well in terms of development of ICT over the past years, making it a country with characteristics of both first and third world countries. This study aims to assess the agricultural commodity exchange market and how small-scale farmers may participate more actively in the market. This study finds that though South Africa has world class ICT infrastructure this has not made it easier for small-scale farmers to enter the agricultural market and value chain. The study finds that there is little or no participation by small-scale farmers in South African Futures Exchange. It finds that mobile phones and applications may be the way forward in the efforts to ensure their participation in the commodity exchange market through provision of services such as price discovery and price risk management as is the function of South African Futures Exchange. It is also found that there is need to invest in high value agricultural products in order to benefit more from commodity exchanges.

The choice of the location and number of warehouses is a strategic-level decision that can have a long- lasting impact on a firm's performance. Warehouse locations and their capacities determine how products flow within a firm's supply chain, which directly influences a firm's performance in terms of cost and service level. This research applies a mixed integer linear programming method to evaluate factors that drive existing inefficiencies in a warehouse network belonging to a Thai commodity chemicals manufacturer. The objective is to determine an optimal warehouse network configuration that minimizes the firm's total transportation and warehousing cost. Inventory turns and storage capacity constraints are found to be the key drivers of inefficiencies. The optimal solution suggests that the company should retain fewer warehouses and expand capacities at these locations. As the company continues to grow, the potential benefit from expansion becomes greater.

Amazon's phenomenal sales growth and desire to maintain "Earth's Biggest Selection" have led to an increase in the diversity of product offerings that has resulted in a corresponding increase in complexity of Amazon's warehouse storage management. There is currently limited insight into the trade offs between the capital, fixed and variable costs of Amazon's storage related operational decisions, leading to inefficient warehouse storage type allocations and higher operational costs. The focus of this six-month LGO internship was to develop a cost model that takes into account all relevant costs to develop recommendations on warehouse storage type allocations for both existing and new fulfillment centers in Amazon's North America Fulfillment Center network. This thesis begins with an overview of Amazon and a description of their fulfillment center network. The overview is followed by a literature review of current warehouse design frameworks and storage optimization research. The following chapter analyzes the current inbound warehouse processes to identify what the relevant storage decisions are, where they are being made, and the current decision making process. Finally, through the development and implementation of a cost model and an analysis of key findings, the thesis provides recommendations for cost-optimized warehouse storage type allocations. The major recommendations are to replace floor pallet storage within existing fulfillment centers, increasing Non-Sortable product mix in select existing Sortable fulfillment centers, and optimized storage type allocations for new fulfillment centers. The expected scaled annual cost savings associated with these cost optimized warehouse storage type allocations within the existing fulfillment centers is 34% across the entire network and 62% for the select Sortable fulfillment center. The expected scaled annual cost savings associated with the optimized storage type allocations for the new fulfillment centers is 24% per new Sortable building and 11% per new Non-Sortable building. The methodology utilized within the cost model to compare fixed, variable and capital costs can be applied more broadly to assess the cost impact of different storage types in any warehousing design framework.
