Abstract : The growing warehouse operation complexity has led companies to adopt a large number of indicators, making its management increasingly difficult. It may be hard for managers to evaluate the overall performance of the logistic systems, including the warehouse, because the assessment of the interdependence of indicators with distinct objectives is rather complex (e.g. the level of a cost indicator shall decrease, whereas a quality indicator level shall be maximized). This fact could lead to biases in the analysis executed by the manager in the evaluation of the global warehouse performance. In this context, this thesis develops a methodology to achieve an integrated warehouse performance measurement. It encompasses four main steps: (i) the development of an analytical model of performance indicators usually used for warehouse management; (ii) the definition of indicator relationships analytically and statistically; (iii) the aggregation of these indicators in an integrated model; (iv) the proposition of a scale to assess the evolution of the warehouse performance over time according to the integrated model results. The methodology is applied to a theoretical warehouse to demonstrate its application. The indicators used to evaluate the warehouse come from the literature and the database is generated to perform the mathematical tools. The Jacobian matrix is used to define indicator relationships analytically, and the principal component analysis to achieve indicator's aggregation statistically. The final aggregated model comprehends 33 indicators assigned in six different components, which compose the global performance indicator equation by means of component's weighted average. A scale is developed for the global performance indicator using an optimization approach to obtain its upper and lower boundaries. The usability of the integrated model is tested for two different warehouse performance situations and interesting insights about the final warehouse performance are discussed. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed methodology reaches its objective providing a decision support tool for managers so that they can be more efficient in the global warehouse performance management without neglecting important information from indicators.

Abstract:
In this study we have conducted research on how to optimize inventory management within logistics. The focus in this study is to examine the picking rounds, the reason for this is because it is the most time consuming and expensive part within a warehouse. Is it possible to minimize the handling time to create efficient picking rounds? As a part of the research project AI has been investigated as well. If it is possible with help of AI, create a streamlining of current warehouse logistics. The purpose of this report is to investigate how to minimize the distance in picking rounds for efficient warehouse management. To be able to fulfil the purpose of the report research questions where conducted. The methodology that was chosen at first was traditional data collection. With the help of other studies conducted in this area we started to collect information. To be able to compare this information to the chosen company Care of Carl a case study was performed. A case study on the current situation at Care of Carl, and what the current optimization is based on. With the help of these two methods a result emerged. The result that was conducted by this study is that placement and categorization of products as well as route planning has a significant role when streamlining the picking process and minimizing the picking process. To store items in a warehouse the most suitable option is to use a free item placement, or storage out of sale frequency. But important to acknowledge is that it requires support systems to make this storage possible. When categorizing articles, it is crucial to combine this with a suiting picking method. In the case study, combining ABC categorization with zone picking was a possible solution. In general, it might be a good idea to invest in AI to use the picking position principle. With AI it is possible to analyse more complex data such as customer patterns and if this implementation succeeds it can lead to great advantages within a warehouse and the picking processes. The traveling distance constitutes most of the total picking time, it is important to have a route method that works with how you have chosen to place the items. This study shows that the optimal routing method is the one to use. This study showed that there are a lot of different strategies and methods on the current market. According to the case study Care of Carl can make big savings by changing strategies and methods. The reason why is because they have been reactive when investing in IT support systems. But in general, if a company wants to meet the current increasing requirements according to the globalization and the continuous changes within logistics operations, AI is the next step. The methods that are currently used are not sufficient, with the help of AI there is room for improvements within product allocation and route planning.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work has investigated how head-mounted-displays can enable more efficient and better work conditions for warehouse workers. Head-mounted-displays have increased in popularity among companies because of an increase in the field of e-commerce, therefore warehouse labour was an interesting area to review. The purpose of this project has been to investigate how head-mounted-displays can simplify warehouse work and to find an area where Tangar can be utilized. Tangar is an application to facilitate indoor navigation by helping users to reach points of interest. Through a mixed methodology approach that utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methods, a broad understanding in warehouse and inventory management have been established. The potentials of head-mounted display were evaluated using empirical and theoretical studies. Based on an early concept that was evaluated by a collaboration with a warehouse-solution company, factors that are of importance in warehouse management were identified. A decision to direct the project towards order picking was taken as it is a fundamental process within warehouse management. Three concepts were generated that harness the benefits of head-mounted-displays. With an informed decision the benefits for each of the concepts were compared with important parameters for a profitable warehouse management. It turned out that "Pick-by-Light", a common system in warehouse management, can be made virtual using head-mounted-displays. Since the system had never previously been operated virtually, an extensive study needed to be done in order to evaluate the viability in order-picking to propose a final concept. An experimental environment was set for the empirical studies, and two other common order picking systems were compared to the virtual Pick-by-Light system. Quantitative data in the form of time measurements from the order picking as well as picking errors and qualitative data from a NASA-TLX survey, was extracted from twelve users. A total of 360 samples from the quantitative study and 36 questionnaires from the qualitative study was then analysed. The result resembled those from similar studies with a conventional Pick-by-Light system. Thus, parallels were drawn that indicated that the virtual system had good potential to perform at least as well as a regular Pick-by-Light. A virtual Pick-by-Light system might be able to reduce implementation-, work- and operational costs as the use of material is replaced by a virtual product, and also no installation is required. With the combination of Tangar, there is also a potential that a virtual Pick-by-Light system could be more efficient and accurate. The disadvantages of the conventional Pick-by-Light system are also that confirmations are ineffective and that workers find it difficult to get an overview of pickplaces. Which can potentially be eliminated with the proposed concept. However, a new generation of hardware and further studies are required in order to establish a final concept. The Magic Leap One, which is the head-mounted-display used in the project, is new. Many problems regarding the display have been discovered during the project and affected the results of the user studies. Further studies need to be done with other displays to determine the validity of the results of this work. In summary, this work gives an introduction in how "Mixed-reality" can be used in warehouse management and recommendations for continued work.

Abstract:
Data are the lifeblood of an organisation, being employed by virtually all business functions within a firm. Data management, therefore, is a critical process in prolonging the life of a company and determining the success of each of an organisation’s business functions. The last decade and a half has seen data warehousing rising in priority within corporate data management as it provides an effective supporting platform for decision support tools. A cross-sectional survey conducted by this research showed that data warehousing is starting to be used within organisations for their engineering asset management, however the industry uptake is slow and has much room for development and improvement. This conclusion is also evidenced by the lack of systematic scholarly research within asset management data warehousing as compared to data warehousing for other business areas. This research is motivated by the lack of dedicated research into asset management data warehousing and attempts to provide original contributions to the area, focussing on data modelling. Integration is a fundamental characteristic of a data warehouse and facilitates the analysis of data from multiple sources. While several integration models exist for asset management, these only cover select areas of asset management. This research presents a novel conceptual data warehousing data model that integrates the numerous asset management data areas. The comprehensive ethnographic modelling methodology involved a diverse set of inputs (including data model patterns, standards, information system data models, and business process models) that described asset management data. Used as an integrated data source, the conceptual data model was verified by more than 20 experts in asset management and validated against four case studies. A large section of asset management data are stored in a relational format due to the maturity and pervasiveness of relational database management systems. Data warehousing offers the alternative approach of structuring data in a dimensional format, which suggests increased data retrieval speeds in addition to reducing analysis complexity for end users. To investigate the benefits of moving asset management data from a relational to multidimensional format, this research presents an innovative relational vs. multidimensional model evaluation procedure. To undertake an equitable comparison, the compared multidimensional are derived from an asset management relational model and as such, this research presents an original multidimensional modelling derivation methodology for asset management relational models. Multidimensional models were derived from the relational models in the asset management data exchange standard, MIMOSA OSA-EAI. The multidimensional and relational models were compared through a series of queries. It was discovered that multidimensional schemas reduced the data size and subsequently data insertion time, decreased the complexity of query conceptualisation, and improved the query execution performance across a range of query types. To facilitate the quicker uptake of these data warehouse multidimensional models within organisations, an alternate modelling methodology was investigated. This research presents an innovative approach of using a case-based reasoning methodology for data warehouse schema design. Using unique case representation and indexing techniques, the system also uses a business vocabulary repository to augment case searching and adaptation. The system was validated through a case-study where multidimensional schema design speed and accuracy was measured. It was found that the case-based reasoning system provided a marginal benefit, with a greater benefits gained when confronted with more difficult scenarios.

The wholesale trading companies are facing new challenges in terms of the level of service, which is an important factor which determines the level of sales and profitability of companies. Thus, currently, companies are aimed to deliver orders to their respective customers on time, in good condition and complete. This file focuses on the importance of warehouse management for mass consumption distributors, since it's the warehouses that determine the operation and productivity costs of these. Thus, some innovative techniques such as the lean warehouse and allocation tools improve working conditions with the aim of reducing downtime and distances. A pilot programme of implementation of the tools mentioned in the warehouse of a wholesale distributor was carried out. As a result of the research, the distance traveled in the warehouse was reduced by 22%, the reduction of times in the picking process, achieving the optimal delivery time and generating an increase in the sales made of 215,720.22 soles. These results prove to be decisive in the performance of the supply chain (inventory, cost, delay and risk), since the key to success for this industry is to satisfy the needs of customers in the shortest possible time.

Abstract:
A database system for storing and querying data of a dynamic schema has been developed based on the kdb+ database management system and the q programming language for use in a financial setting of order and execution services. Some basic assumptions of mandatory fields of the data to be stored are made including that the data are time-series based.A dynamic schema enables an Order-Management System (OMS) to store information not suitable or usable when stored in log files or traditional databases. Log files are linear, cannot be queried effectively and are not suitable for the volumes produced by modern OMSs. Traditional databases are typically row-oriented which does not suit time-series based data and rely on the relational model which uses statically typed sets to store relations. The created system includes software that is capable of mining the actual schema stored in the database and visualize it. This enables ease of exploratory querying and production of applications which use the database. A feedhandler has been created optimized for handling high volumes of data. Volumes in finance are steadily growing as the industry continues to adopt computer automation of tasks. Feedhandler performance is important to reduce latency and for cost savings as a result of not having to scale horizontally. A study of the area of algorithmic trading has been performed with focus on transaction-cost analysis. Fundamental algorithms have been reviewed.A proof of concept application has been created that simulates an OMS storing logs on the execution of a Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) trading algorithm. The stored logs are then used in order to improve the performance of the trading algorithm through basic data mining and machine learning techniques. The actual learning algorithm focuses on predicting intraday volume patterns.

Abstract:
This thesis was carried out at Borggårds Bruk AB, a company which specializes in wire products and is located just northwest of Finspång, in Borggård, Sweden. The company’s business idea is to produce tailor-made products for Scandinavian customers with high requirements for product development, prototyping, quality and reliability. The purpose of this thesis is to look further into the raw material warehouse in the factory, to find any possible improvements that can be made. This is done by analysing both the material and the information flow in the warehouse. The analysis results in several problems being acknowledged, such as a complete lack of location labels, material stored between the racks and the placement of the most used materials being stored at random places in the warehouse. A new layout, where all locations can be seen is created to make it easier for anyone to find material in the warehouse. A new sorting system is implemented, creating fixed places for the top six most used materials (which equal 68% of the material used). These are moved as close as possible to the production to decrease any unnecessary transports.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the development and implementation of an Interleaving Warehouse Layout Model. Traditionally, the space allocated to items in a warehouse is determined on the basis of inventory cost considerations. With space requirements taken as given, the actual assignment of items to locations in the warehouse is carried out independently. Assuming an interleaving ("dual command") order picking method and the simple economic order quantity inventory model, it is demonstrated that the quantity and location problems must be considered simultaneously in order to achieve a minimum total cost (order picking cost plus inventory cost). A heuristic optimization technique is developed and applied to a set of realistic, hypothetical problems. This model allows warehouse management to assess the tradeoffs in handling costs among various stock arrangements and reorder quantities to achieve a minimum total cost.

The purpose of this MBA project is to explore the potential value of combining automatic identification and robotics technology in order to improve asset visibility within a warehouse environment. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) experiences high costs associated with inventory inaccuracies and annual inventory audits. Our project examines technologies that could be used to improve the DLA’s asset visibility. This study examines current industry applications of viable technologies in the marketplace and whether implementing these technologies would provide a sound economic solution. A cost–benefit analysis is included to determine the affordability of efficiencies that RFID and barcoding bring to warehouse operations. This analysis encompasses costs for systems purchase, implementation, and integration. Benefits are measured by determining cost savings in manpower requirements, increased efficiencies in order and restocking times, and improved accuracy in inventory management. The qualitative analysis addresses the advantages and disadvantages of an automatic identification system implementation. It also addresses future potential for the use of robots to improve inventory management. Ultimately, the project concludes that 2D barcoding far more cost effective within 10 years; however, both 2D barcoding and RFID can provide a positive return on investment.

Abstract:
Background: In modern times it is undeniable that companies that foster diversity have been able to gain an edge over their competitors. Warehouses as every other workplace are trying to follow the trend of economic globalization and a study towards managing the diversity needs to be conducted in order to evaluate the processes that the managers within the warehouses use in order to integrate the workforce effectively. Method: This research uses a qualitative approach which involved semi structured interviews with 5 warehouses that operate within Jonkoping. The study is perceived through an interpretive research philosophy with an inductive research approach. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how cultural diversity is managed at the warehouses within Jonkoping. Also, a further research is conducted on how the tools and processes available to the managers working within the warehouse industry can help them foster diversity within their company. Conclusion: The results depict that the idea of having culturally diverse work teams is becoming increasingly popular and mangers working within the warehouse industry seem to take more interest in hiring people coming from different backgrounds. The major benefits of having a racially mixed team identified by managers were creativity and innovation. The major challenge that was brought up by managers was their ability to be responsive and adaptable towards the needs of their employees.

Amazon's phenomenal sales growth and desire to maintain "Earth's Biggest Selection" have led to an increase in the diversity of product offerings that has resulted in a corresponding increase in complexity of Amazon's warehouse storage management. There is currently limited insight into the trade offs between the capital, fixed and variable costs of Amazon's storage related operational decisions, leading to inefficient warehouse storage type allocations and higher operational costs. The focus of this six-month LGO internship was to develop a cost model that takes into account all relevant costs to develop recommendations on warehouse storage type allocations for both existing and new fulfillment centers in Amazon's North America Fulfillment Center network. This thesis begins with an overview of Amazon and a description of their fulfillment center network. The overview is followed by a literature review of current warehouse design frameworks and storage optimization research. The following chapter analyzes the current inbound warehouse processes to identify what the relevant storage decisions are, where they are being made, and the current decision making process. Finally, through the development and implementation of a cost model and an analysis of key findings, the thesis provides recommendations for cost-optimized warehouse storage type allocations. The major recommendations are to replace floor pallet storage within existing fulfillment centers, increasing Non-Sortable product mix in select existing Sortable fulfillment centers, and optimized storage type allocations for new fulfillment centers. The expected scaled annual cost savings associated with these cost optimized warehouse storage type allocations within the existing fulfillment centers is 34% across the entire network and 62% for the select Sortable fulfillment center. The expected scaled annual cost savings associated with the optimized storage type allocations for the new fulfillment centers is 24% per new Sortable building and 11% per new Non-Sortable building. The methodology utilized within the cost model to compare fixed, variable and capital costs can be applied more broadly to assess the cost impact of different storage types in any warehousing design framework.

The choice of the location and number of warehouses is a strategic-level decision that can have a long- lasting impact on a firm's performance. Warehouse locations and their capacities determine how products flow within a firm's supply chain, which directly influences a firm's performance in terms of cost and service level. This research applies a mixed integer linear programming method to evaluate factors that drive existing inefficiencies in a warehouse network belonging to a Thai commodity chemicals manufacturer. The objective is to determine an optimal warehouse network configuration that minimizes the firm's total transportation and warehousing cost. Inventory turns and storage capacity constraints are found to be the key drivers of inefficiencies. The optimal solution suggests that the company should retain fewer warehouses and expand capacities at these locations. As the company continues to grow, the potential benefit from expansion becomes greater.

Abstract:

As volatility and customer demands increase, companies are simultaneously trying to reduce their logistic costs. Distribution centers are being forced to increase their agility and flexibility in order to rapidly execute on continuously evolving logistics plans. One proven way of gaining warehouse efficiency and create visibility into processes is through implementation of a Warehouse Management System (WMS) – a leverage technology that introduces automation in warehouse processes. With system directed task assignment work can be optimally balanced and distributed to available resources and auto-generate tasks with high quality. A critical aspect of this have shown to be prioritization of tasks in the dynamic terminal environment. To introduce a new work flow support into an existing organization requires changes in routines, roles and organization to harvest the real efficiency gains. In this report these problematics are applied to the distributing terminal of SCA Transforest, Tunadal, Sweden. A benchmarking study of a terminal in the same business, the Stora Enso terminal in Zeebrügge, Belgium, is the object of comparison. At the latter terminal system directed task assignment has been successfully implemented. Based on the findings from the benchmarking study and other research this report present important success factors as well as specific solutions to issues regarding automation, flexibility and process visibility - with the purpose to guide SCA Transforest in the future system development.

Abstract:
The growing warehouse operation complexity has led companies to adopt a large number of indicators, making its management increasingly difficult. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed methodology reaches its objective providing a decision support tool for managers so that they can be more efficient in the global warehouse performance management without neglecting important information from indicators
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
The storage and distribution of goods in warehouses have been around for centuries. Information systems and technology have enabled business to run various different functions, like accounting, successfully. Companies soon realised the additional benefits technology can bring to their operations. Increase in product throughput and increase in product range are some of the examples that add additional complexity to the warehousing and distribution functions. In order to cater for the additional complexity, to gain improved customer service levels and gain a strategic advantage in delivering the right product, in the right place at the right time, companies are implementing warehouse management systems (WMS). However, the WMS implementations are complex and involve various different stakeholders. Failed WMS implementations can negatively affect the operations. There are many risks associated with the WMS implementations and many companies have had to issue profit warnings in the past due to failed implementations. Various viewpoints on project success exist but this research report has aimed to provide a framework of key success criteria which organisations can use to evaluate the success of their implementation. Since WMS are generally rolled-out across various sites within a specific supply chain, measuring and evaluating the success of the first project can guide the project team to achieve more project success in the future, eliminating the risks associated with failed implementations. This study clearly defines the difference between project success, project management success, critical success factors and key success criteria. Literature on the topic is limited and therefore this study looked at various sources like peer-reviewed literature, popular literature and case studies. The findings of the report indicate that there is a list of ten different key success criteria which organisations can focus on in order to measure and improve their project success. Taking ownership, change management, managing stakeholder expectations, communication, training and testing are some of the key success criteria that were identified. This study concludes by presenting a framework which organisations can use to measure the success of their WMS implementation.

Abstract:
In 2014, approximately 30% of the global workers viewed experiences in the workplace as positive and fulfilling, which results in increased productivity in the workplace. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that some warehouse service center managers used to engage employees to higher levels of productivity. The population comprised of 7 warehouse service center managers in 2 companies located in the Riverport area in Louisville, KY. The conceptual framework for this study encompassed Kahn's employee engagement theory. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, organizational procedure handbooks, and direct observation to prompt detailed information about participants' experiences with employee engagement. The data collected was transcribed and member checking completed to validate the credibility and trustworthiness. Data collected from each source supported theme interpretation through triangulation. Three key themes developed: clear and concise communication, creating supportive manager-employee partnerships, and benefits to include incentives to promote employee engagement such as recognition awards, salary increases, additional time off work, flexibility with work schedules, and tuition reimbursement. The findings revealed warehouse service center managers used strategies to promote employee engagement in the workplace. The implications for positive social change include the potential to give managers new insights to promote employee involvement in the workplace through effective communication, partnership and incentives to create a sustainable organization while contributing to the economy and increasing involvement in the community.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to present the advantages and disadvantages of automation in warehouses. The goal is to introduce a way of approaching when implementing a new technology. The following research question are thus stated:     RQ1. What are the advantages with automation in warehouse companies?    RQ2. What are the disadvantages with automation in warehouse companies?    RQ3. How can automation be implemented within a warehouse company?    The research questions worked as a guideline to build the theoretical framework and result section. The analysis and conclusion section were then formulated, and the research questions were answered. To answer the research questions, the approach of the systematic literature review has been used. Which means the information gathered was done in a systematic way.     It can be said that there are both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to automation in warehouses. The automated systems that were introduced in this thesis was AGVs and palletizing robots. Both these systems require more investigation and do not fully fulfil the customer demand. Yet, it can be said that automation in warehouses can have many positive effects on for example productivity, effectivity, and employees phycological and physical aspect.     For implementation of automation a guiding principle of three head phases was introduced with several steps. The head phases are the pre-project phase, implementation phase and post-project phase. The pre-project phase is about analysing the current company state and deciding if the implementation is possible with the resources available. The implementation phase is about the importance of structuring the planning and reducing the uncertainty during the project. Lastly, post-project phase is about adjusting after the automation and reflecting about the implementation. Reflecting the processes that occurred during the project is valuable experience, therefore it is important to think over the whole process and how to keep improving processes within the organization.    There are both advantages and disadvantages with the use of automation within warehouse companies. It is believed that implementation of automation in a warehouse is strongly dependent on the individuals involved. In this study the key individuals that were discussed were managers and employees. A framework for implementation of new technology was introduced as a guiding principle for managers. The framework is aimed to work for warehouse companies and presents the risks of not following the recommended procedure.     In future studies, the programming field within palletizing and AGVs can be further researched, which can reduce the disadvantages with the usage of automation within warehouse companies.

Abstract:
Nowadays, in a competitive business environment, when the information of technology is well used it becomes of a great value among companies that search for excellence in customer relationship attendance. Therefore, more and more often, the companies are searching for alternatives to ease the management of activities, increasing control, reducing costs and getting important information that can result in quicker decisions and consequently improve the level of the service. Recently, the WMS is being implemented in general by the biggest logistics operators. A Booz Allen & Hamilton´s research in partnership with the Center of Studies in Logistic in 2001 (CEL-Coppead) evidenced that up to 50% of the logistic operators have already been using this technology (Costa et al., 2001). Due to the growth of WMS use and the possibility for the author to participate in an implementation of this technology in a company during her Master Research, the objectives of this work are: to map the operation of the Alpha Company´s Distribution Center (DC) before WMS implementation; and analyze the WMS implementation process in a DC that is in operation. Since the author was part of the team in the implementation of WMS in the Alpha Company, the methodology used for the elaboration of this work included: bibliographical research, visits in loco to the Alpha Company´s DC and non structuralized interviews with the involved parts in the operation. As a result of this work, we have an analysis of the operation before and during the implementation of the WMS in line with the main results of the simulations, given that until the present moment, due to strategic changes in implementation chronogram the WMS still has not become a reality in the Alpha Company.

Abstract:
In a supply chain, a warehouse is a crucial component for linking all chain parties. Automatic identification and data capture (auto-ID) technology, e.g. RFID and barcodes are among the essential technologies in the 21st century knowledge-based economy. Selecting an auto-ID technology is a long term investment and it contributes to improving operational efficiency, achieving cost savings and creating opportunities for higher revenues. The interest in auto-ID research for warehouse management is rather stagnant and relatively small in comparison to other research domains such as transport, logistics and supply chain. However, although there are some previous studies that explored factors for the auto-ID selection decision in a warehouse environment, those factors (e.g., operational factors) have been examined separately and researchers have paid no attention to all key factors that may potentially affect this decision. In fact, yet there is no comprehensive framework in the literature that comprehensively investigates the critical factors influencing the auto-ID selection decision and how the factors should be combined to produce a successful auto-ID selection process in warehouse management. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to investigate empirically the auto-ID technology-selection process and to determine the key factors that influence decision makers when selecting auto-ID technology in the warehouse environment. This research is preceded by a comprehensive and systematic review of the relevant literature to identify the set of factors that may affect the technology selection decision. The Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework has been used as lens to categorise the identified factors (Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990). Data were collected by conducting first a modified (mixed-method) two-round Delphi study with a worldwide panel of experts (107) including academics, industry practitioners and consultants in auto-ID technologies. The results of the Delphi study were then verified via follow-up interviews, both face-to-face and telephone, carried out with 19 experts across the world. This research in nature is positivist, exploratory/descriptive, deductive/inductive and quantitative/qualitative. The quantitative data were analysed using the statistical package for social sciences, SPSS V.18, while the qualitative data of the Delphi study and the interviews were analysed manually using quantitative content analysis approach and thematic content analysis approach respectively. The findings of this research are reported on the motivations/reasons of warehouses in seeking to use auto-ID technologies, the challenges in making an auto-ID decision, the recommendations to address the challenges, the key steps that should be followed in making auto-ID selection decision, the key factors and their relative importance that influence auto-ID selection decision in a warehouse. The results of the Delphi study show that the six major factors affecting the auto-ID selection decision in warehouse management are: organisational, operational, structural, resources, external environmental and technological factors (in decreasing order of importance). In addition, 54 key sub-factors have been identified from the list of each of the major factors and ranked in decreasing order of the importance mean scores. However, the importance of these factors depends on the objectives and strategic motivations of warehouse; size of warehouse; type of business; nature of business environment; sectors; market types; products and countries. Based on the Delphi study and the interviews findings, a comprehensive multi-stage framework for auto-ID technology selection process has been developed. This research indicates that the selection process is complex and needs support and closer collaboration from all participants involved in the process such as the IT team, top management, warehouse manager, functional managers, experts, stockholders and vendors. Moreover, warehouse managers should have this process for collaboration before adopting the technology in order to reduce the high risks involved and achieve successful implementation. This research makes several contributions for both academic and practitioners with auto-ID selection in a warehouse environment. Academically, it provides a holistic multi-stage framework that explains the critical issues within the decision making process of auto-ID technology in warehouse management. Moreover, it contributes to the body of auto-ID and warehouse management literature by synthesising the literature on key dimensions of auto-ID (RFID/barcode) selection decision in the warehouse field. This research also provides a theoretical basis upon which future research on auto-ID selection and implementation can be built. Practically, the findings provide valuable insights for warehouse managers and executives associated with auto-ID selection and advance their understanding of the issues involved in the technology selection process that need to be considered.

Abstract:
The increased demand on distribution centers to provide quicker turnarounds from receiving to shipping while maintaining precise inventory accuracies is spurring the acquisition of a warehouse management system (WMS) to improve operations and increase efficiency. With the rapid expansion of WMS technology, it seems inevitable that warehouses will outgrow inefficient operational processes and switch to a system that can accommodate rapid development. Research has explained the financial burdens and benefits of acquiring a WMS, but there’s been minimal research describing the impacts of the actual implementation. This study took place within a 600,000 sq. ft. fulfillment center and focused on the day-to-day activities of its 300+ employees. A qualitative methodology was used while observing daily processes within the inbound, inventory control, outbound, and shipping departments throughout the implementation process to determine the impacts on operational procedures and the people involved. The results describe the adaptations necessary within each department to transform the former manually based processes into automated processes that support the WMS. Also, the configurational oversights within the WMS that led to time consuming complications when performing daily operational tasks. The findings of this study explain the key factors that impact a WMS implementation and opportunities to increase the chances of a successful implementation.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been concluded as one of the ten most important information technologies in the 21st century. Many companies and research institutes around the world are actively developing RFID applications. Particularly, the applications of ultra high frequency (UHF) in logistics and warehouse management are getting many attentions and interests. In recent years, considering the cost and efficiency, more and more enterprises begin to outsource their document managing, especially non-current records, to professional record management companies. This outsourcing solution can reduce the usage of office space as well as the maintenance cost of record storage for large corporate users. As a result, professional record management becomes a significant new topic. This study takes one records warehouse as the research subject for a case study. After the initial feasibility study, this research introduces RFID technology to the subject’s current barcode operations for process reengineering. Considering the cost of RFID tags at the moment, some barcode usages remain the same. In addition, this study develops the prototype system for further field tests. This prototype takes the advantages of RFID with its long-range contactless reading, real-time concurrent identification, potable database, re-write ability, and security. Based on the test results of the prototype developed, this study provides the ROI analysis as well as the experiences of RFID implementation to records management industry. These research findings can be offered to those interested in the RFID application fields.

E-commerce in Taiwan has developed over a decade. Based on the business models, e-commerce companies can be divided into B2C, B2B2C, C2C...etc. In the past, consumers collected product and price information based on their needs and chose to make purchases on different platforms. This process always wasted time and was inefficient. Now because of the advancement of the Internet technology, consumers can use not only personal computers but also smart phones to search all kinds of information online at any time. The pace of modern life is fast. In the past, after placing an order online, the consumers usually needed to wait 7 to 14 days to receive the goods due to the slow shipping and logistics. That practice could no longer meet today's consumers' expectations. In 2007, PChome made a bold move and started 24h shopping service while the market wasn’t optimistic about this move. This decision not only helped PChome to turn around and started making a profit, it also pushed online shopping industry to its peak. In the following years, 24h shipping has become a standard service among major shopping platforms. Shopee officially entered the Taiwan market in 2015 as an online auction platform. n In just two years, it has not only become the top gun in the auction industry, it also moved into the B2B2C and 24h shopping market. How Shopee, which was only 3 years old, could stand out in the fierce battles among e-commerce providers and . also has PChome, which has long been the exclusive leader of Taiwanese e-commerce companies, devotes itself to this battle. Focusing on the warehouse management system, I intend to study and compare Shopee and PChome's 24h shipping services in this thesis paper.

In the thesis, we provide a solution to solve a schema change problem. In a data warehouse system, if schema changes occur in a data source, the overall system will lose the consistency between the data sources and the data warehouse. These schema changes will render the data warehouse obsolete. We have developed three stages to handle schema changes occurring in databases. They are change detection, diagnosis, and handling. Recommendations are generated by DB-agent to information DW-agent to notify the DBA what and where a schema change affects the star schema. In the study, we mainly handle seven schema changes in a relational database. All of them, we not only handle non-adding schema changes but also handling adding schema changes. A non-adding schema change in our experiment has high correct mapping rate as using a traditional mappings between a data warehouse and a database. For an adding schema change, it has many uncertainties to diagnosis and handle. For this reason, we compare similarity between an adding relation or attribute and the ontology concept or concept attribute to generate a good recommendation. The evaluation results show that the proposed approach is capable to detect these schema changes correctly and to recommend the DBA about the changes appropriately.

The growth of World-Wide Web has brought in an improved work environment for many people but introduced the “information overloading” problem to them at the same time. Search engines help one find what s/he wants but the keyword-based search often results in too much information to be managed. Numerous research approaches have been reported in the literature, covering such important issues as efficient search algorithms and improved search results. In this paper, we explore the idea of supporting multi-perspective view of document collections based on the concept of data warehousing as a complementary approach to search engines. First, we build up a document warehouse system to provide multi-dimensional processing capability. Unlike the data warehouse for quantitative data, the document warehouse is meant to deal with document collections such as news group articles, e-mails and so on. Based on the one-dimensional searching structure of search engines and the capability of data processing in the data warehouse, we can provide aggregated multi-dimensional view of one document set. Second, we implement a set of set operators including roll-up, drill-down, slice-and-dice, which allow users to view document information at different levels of details. From the different perspective of a document set, users can get lots of implicit information that is not provided in the search engine result. The document warehouse system also plays the role of decision-making support for organizations.
