Extending Schreiber’s mosaic model, we construct a political economy model for how the Wari Empire could have functioned based on available evidence. We argue that Wari administrators sought to create a broadly integrating interregional system without the benefit of markets through the creation of a staple-based mobilization of agricultural production in order to support state-managed ceremonies, corvée labor for construction projects, a warrior class, and craft and ritual specialists. The association of Wari with Quechua, or proto-Quechan speech, cannot be demonstrated by an unbroken tradition of material culture such as ceramic style from the Middle Horizon to ethnohistorically known Quechua speaking communities. This chapter presents excavation data from two archaeological sites, El Palacio and Paredones, located in the Department of Cajamarca in the northern sierra of Peru, a geographic area of social dynamism during the Middle Horizon. This thesis explores parole detention as a site of transnational exchange through a case study of Verdun, a central depot for British civilian and military prisoners of war in Napoleonic France. The central concerns of this project are the visual constructions of feminine and feminist subjectivities, significations and semiotics of the (brown) female body, and the pleasures and power of global visual culture. I consider the primary visual fields that seek to tell the story of Pakistani women, and Muslim woman more broadly, after September 11th, 2001. The re-emergence of chivalry in the mid-eighteenth century fundamentally altered Britain’s perception of etiquette, duty, masculinity and the ideology surrounding war.
