Abstract:
In this paper we focus on two types of risks, the risk of malfunctioning of a product quantified by its reliability, and the risk of misunderstanding the features and qualities of a product while deciding whether to buy it. The later risk is caused by the information asymmetry, which is a natural property of any communication process. We discuss the relationship between these risks and product warranty. We begin with an overview of warranties from the decision-makers' viewpoint. We elaborate on the purposes, legalities, and types of warranties and follow with a summary of mathematical models and concepts for quantifying the financial implications of warranties of malfunctioning. Further, we propose a model for quantifying the risk of misinforming and elaborate on the relationship between this risk and product warranty.

Abstract:
Presently, the need to characterize the constitutive parameters of materials has increased due to the manufacture of new materials and development of computational analysis software intending to reproduce the real behavior which depends on the quality of the models implemented and their material parameters. However, in order to identify all constitutive parameters of materials a large number of mechanical tests is required. Thus, only one mechanical test that could allow to characterize all the mechanical properties could be desired. Hence, the aim of this work is to propose a methodology that find the most informative loading path in the sense of display normal and shear strains as clear aspossible to warrantee that the solution is the most unique and distinguishable for the parameter identification process. To achieve this objective the proposed methodology uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) coupled together with optimization strategies. Thismethodology is presented for elastoplasticity behavior.

Abstract:
Agriculture is a key sector in rural economics. In some Southern Regions of Spain capable of developing a competitive irrigation sector, agriculture is a powerful means towards development. This is the case of many comarcas of Guadalquivir and Segura River Basins, which however face a growing water scarcity and drought risk. To respond these problems in an effective manner, a series of Planes de Sequía have been approved in order to give a planned and strategic response. This paper focuses on expected impact of new decision rules established in the Planes de Sequía (which were passed without any previous economic impact analysis) and assess whether or not they contribute to irrigation sustainability and thus regional and rural economics development. This paper develops a stochastic model to assess economic loss derived from Planes de Sequía implementation over irrigated agriculture. Conclusions show that Planes de Sequía do not warrantee irrigation sustainability and priority uses water supply.

Abstract:
Pavement warranty is an innovative contracting procedure increasingly adopted by highway agencies. Many states view implementing warranties as a way to protect their investment in pavement construction. The major benefit of pavement warranty is enhanced pavement performance. However, establishing warranty criteria and monitoring the performance of warranted pavement are two technical issues that must be resolved. This paper presents the discoveries of a research project supported by FHWA to investigate the effectiveness of using the pavement management system (PMS) to monitor the performance of pavement under warranty. It has been discovered that most states establish their warranty specifications on the basis of performance data from their PMS database by using statistical analyses, expert opinions, and adaptation of other states’ specifications. They also use the PMS data to monitor the performance of both warranty and nonwarranty pavements because the essential data, like ride, cracking, and rutting, are available in the database and are convenient for use. This paper also documents the unique features of the warranty specifications, including the warranty period, performance indicators, data collection methods, performance thresholds, remedial actions, and how the PMS database can be used to track the performance of pavements under warranty in five states: Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, and Michigan. Some comparisons of the performances of the warranted pavements and those of nonwarranted pavements of similar conditions are also presented. The survey indicated that an integrated PMS that links the materials and traffic database would offer better efficiency to monitor and analyze the performance of both warranty and nonwarranty pavements.

Abstract:
Subject area International business; business ethics; international trade law; intellectual property Study level/applicability Undergraduate and Master's level courses in Business and Management, particularly with a focus on international trade. Case overview This case covers the issues that surround piracy of intellectual property by highlighting illegal manufacture and distribution of millions of Zippo brand windproof lighters and considers the seriousness of the large-scale theft of intellectual property by civilized nations. The focus of this case is on the additional victimization of the producers of genuine products, mostly European and American, who have the policy of life-time repair-or-replace warrantee, which by extension, although wrongly, becomes applicable to their counterfeits. Some micro and macro aspects are covered in detail, some are alluded to, while others are left out for the teachers of this case to justify considering the local logic and culture. Expected learning outcomes There are major lessons embedded in this case: first, intellectual piracy is not less than the theft of tangible property. Second, the problem of piracy carried out by large, civilized countries is really serious because of its huge size. Third, if the rights of those developing innovation are not protected and they cut their investments in R&D, the consequence will hurt all people in the world – emerging and developed. AbstractWe investigate the relation between a firm’s product warranty level and its leverage. We find that leverage relates negatively to the warranty level and that this relation is robust to controls for endogeneity and self-selection into offering warranties. The negative warranty-leverage relation obtains only in the subsample of firms in the manufacturing industries. We also show that firms with warranties have the lowest debt levels, firms without warranties but operating in industries where other firms offer warranties on average carry higher debt, and firms in industries where no firm offers a warranty have the highest debt levels.

Abstract:
Purpose Research in marketing has extensively examined the signaling effects of product warranties on consumer perceptions. Although this stream of research has focused on initial product warranties offered by the manufacturer, studies of extended warranties, which protect consumers against product breakdowns beyond the warranty constraints of the manufacturer, are relatively scarce. This paper aims to empirically establish the effects of variables which influence the pricing of extended warranties for consumer durables. Design/methodology/approach Using data on over 8,000 product offers in six durable goods categories, drivers of the annual premiums for extended warranties are empirically identified. Bivariate and multi-level hierarchical linear regression methods are used to establish the effects of factors which may drive the prices of extended warranties. Findings The results reveal that the standardized annual premiums for extended warranties systematically vary across product categories and brands and are further affected by the retailer’s decision to use odd price endings for the sold product and the extended warranty. The influences of warranty length and price level of the protected product on extended warranty premiums are also empirically established. Research limitations/implications The findings indicate systematic variations in extended warranty prices as a result of the factors studied. Future research can extend this line of inquiry by utilizing alternative means of data gathering. Practical implications Given that marketers often cross-sell many consumer durable goods with extended warranty policies, and considering the growth in consumer spending in this category, as well as the high retail margins associated with extended warranties, this paper contributes to the understanding of the mechanism by which extended warranty prices are determined in the marketplace. Originality/value This is the first study to examine the determinants of extended warranty prices, as past studies have been normative and non-empirical in nature.

Abstract:
Background: Recent overweight and obesity prevalence data are lacking for China. Methods: Data were from provincially representative surveys conducted in 2013 and 2018 in Hunan Province, China. Overweight and obesity were defined according to the Chinese standard. Complex sampling weights were considered in statistical analyses. 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of rate was calculated. Results: The overall prevalence rate between 2013 and 2018 significantly increased from 20.81% (95% CI: 17.68–23.95) to 26.97% (95% CI: 23.48–30.45) for overweight and from 4.09% (95% CI: 3.21–4.96) to 7.13% (95% CI: 5.10–9.15) for obesity in Hunan Province of China, respectively. Urban residents and males had higher crude prevalence rates of overweight and obesity than rural residents and females in 2013 and in 2018. Notably, the peak age groups of overweight and obesity both became younger between 2013 and 2018. After controlling for Engel coefficient, level of education and frequency of physical exercise per week, the overweight prevalence significantly increased in urban males aged 65+ (adjusted OR: 1.52) and rural males aged 45–54 years (adjusted OR: 1.52) and 65+ (adjusted OR: 1.88) and the obesity prevalence rate rose significantly in many groups (urban males: 18–24 years, 25–34 years, 35–44 years and 55–64 years; urban females: 25–34 years, 35–44 years, 45–54 years; rural males: 18–24 years, 25–34 years; rural females: 35–44 years, 55–64 years), with adjusted OR varying from 1.56 to 5.52. Conclusion: The adult prevalence rates of overweight and obesity significantly increased between 2013 and 2018 in Hunan Province, China. The increasing prevalence rates and varying prevalence changes across groups warrantee further research and policy interventions.

Abstract:
The average builder in the USA provides a warrantee for 10 years, and the US Department for Energy calculates that US office buildings have an average lifespan of 73 years. No building is permanent, and all will face demolition at some point. When a building comes to the end of its safe and useful lifespan, there is no method for re-using the material in new buildings, instead, all constructions today require virgin material. This is a problem for sustainability because US cities, like most other global cities, require cyclical replacement of ageing buildings, and therefore perpetual resource extraction. This paper provides techniques for computationally arranging materials after the demolition and unmaking of architecture. Rather than downcycling concrete into low-value aggregate or melting float glass into opaque bottles methods are shown for this material to be indexed, re-machined and algorithmically arranged into new assemblies. These assemblies are conceived of as holding patterns; an indexed library of materials that are put into useful architectural arrangements, but ready to be disassembled towards some future use. These holding patterns are used as infill to the city rather than landfill beyond. Rather than building for sixty-year life spans, the project offers an imagination of eternal re-constructions that can learn from the carcass of past buildings. Based on rough estimates  2016 could be the first year where there exists more than one trillion tons of concrete on earth. More than the total weight of living trees on the planet (Crowther et al. 2015; USGS, 2018). This paper begins to develop new aptitudes for re-fitting misfit material rather than consuming evermore.

Abstract:
Objectivity is not the same thing as independence from the mind. Because the word ‘mind’ has been used to cover myriad things from pains to practices, care must be taken as to just what it is independence from which is in question. The gut notion of objectivity is captured in an anecdote from the life of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln and a political colleague were discussing how to get a policy across and the colleague suggested labelling the policy in a certain way; they happened to be near a donkey and their dialogue went like this:‘Sir, how many legs does this donkey have?’‘Four, Mr. Lincoln’‘And how many tails has it?’‘Why, just one, Mr. Lincoln’‘Tell me, sir, what if we were to call the tail a leg; how many legs would the donkey then have?’‘Five, Mr. Lincoln’.‘No, sir; for you cannot make a tail into a leg by calling it one’.

Abstract:
Lifetime warranties are becoming more popular as these types of warranties provide assurance for a longer reliable service life, protection of customers against poor quality and the potential high cost of failure occurring during the long uncertain life of products. Chattopadhyay and Rahman (2008) proposed taxonomy for Lifetime warranty policies and developed cost models for Free rectification lifetime warranty (FRLTW) policies. In line with Chattopadhyay and Rahman, in this paper, stochastic models for two most potential and currently practiced Cost sharing lifetime warranty (CSLTW) policies, Specific parts excluded lifetime warranty and Limit on individual cost lifetime warranty have been developed to estimate the customers' and manufacturers' costs. The developed models capture the uncertainties of lifetime warranty coverage period and implication in offering such warranties on both manufacturer and customers. The developed models are analyzed using illustrative examples considering products with time-dependent failures.

Abstract:
Oliveria decumbens (Apiaceae) is an aromatic herb traditionally employed in the Persian medicine for the treatment of infectious and gastrointestinal disorders. In the present study, we analyzed the chemical composition of essential oils obtained from different Iranian populations and evaluated their efficacy on a panel of human pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), probiotic (Bacillus subtilis), and phytopathogens (Clavibacter michiganensis, Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens, Xanthomonas citri, and Agrobacterium tumefaciens). The gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry analysis put in evidence four main volatile constituents such as thymol (20.3–36.4%), carvacrol (18.8–33.1%), γ-terpinene (10.6–25.9%), and p-cymene (9.5–17.3%), though with significant variability from an essential oil to another. Notably, the oils from the populations sited in Nourabad Mamasani and Dehdasht showed the highest amount of the phenolic monoterpenes thymol (36.4 and 35.2%, respectively) and carvacrol (33.1 and 30.6%, respectively). The antibacterial activity of O. decumbens essential oils was assessed by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods, showing high activity for the samples from Nourabad Mamasani and Dehdasht populations exhibiting high level of the above phenolics. The obtained MIC and MBC values (mg/ml) were in the ranges 0.0625–2 mg/ml and 1–16 mg/ml, respectively. Noteworthy, in some cases, the antibacterial activity of O. decumbens essential oils was higher than that of chloramphenicol used as positive control. The average MBCs displayed by the O. decumbens samples showed that C. flaccumfaciens had the highest sensitivity to the essential oils. Based on these results, our work shed light on selected O. decumbens populations deserving proper breeding and cultivation strategies in order to warrantee production of bioactive essential oils to be used at pharmaceutical and agricultural level to combat several pathogens.

Abstract:
It is believed that warranty contracting would benefit state highway agencies by improving quality, saving money and time, and encouraging contractors' innovations. However, the challenges associated with warranties could be substantial, including higher costs, early failures, a reduction or even elimination of small contractors from the bidding process, and an increase in contract disputes and litigation. The actual impact of warranty provisions on state Department of Transportation (DOT) projects in the United States of America is still unclear because of limited industry experience. This paper provides a detailed discussion of warranty provisions and the benefits and problems associated with the subject matter. The advantages and disadvantages of warranty provisions are evaluated from the conflicting perspectives of state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), contractors, and surety companies. The future prospects of warranty provisions are established based on the findings of a recent study of warranty provisions and existing literature. Also, several options are proposed that have a strong potential to improve the application of warranties on DOT projects.Key words: warranties, highway construction, innovation, highway maintenance, contract administration, construction costs, construction inspection.

Abstract:
In this paper, we analyze the exercise behavior of warrant holders and its impact on warrant values. For this purpose, we propose a parametric model to describing the exercise volume of warrants and calibrate it to exercise data of 40 warrants from the German market. We find that few too-early exercises but also a significant number of too-late exercises occur. This observed exercise behavior results in warrant values that are more than 3% below those under the optimal exercise strategy for at-the-money warrants and the differences are even much higher for in- and out-of-the-money warrants.

Abstract:
This paper uses moment analysis, capital asset pricing model (CAPM) statistics, stochastic dominance (SD) test, and volume analysis to investigating why the market for Taiwan warrants can be sustained but not in China. Our moment analysis shows that buying in China warrants has a higher likelihood of losses. Our CAPM analysis shows that both the Sharpe ratio and Jensen index for warrants from the Chinese market are too negative. The Treynor index shows that Chinese warrants are highly volatile. Our SD analysis shows that risk averters prefer to invest in Chinese warrants compared to Taiwanese warrants, implying that the warrant issuers prefer to issue Taiwanese warrants than Chinese warrants. Using volume analysis, the Chinese warrant market is much more active, implying more speculative activities in China than in Taiwan. All the above could lead to China’s decision to close its warrant market. The findings in the paper are useful for academics, investors, and policy makers.

Abstract:
Selecting complex equipment with availability requirements as the object of study, this article investigates an availability-based warranty policy. Under this policy, apart from providing repairs or replacements upon failures, the manufacturer guarantees a negotiated availability level of products during the warranty period. In order to satisfy the availability requirement of the warranted products with rational cost, two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy is carried out by the manufacturer, which is scheduled by considering the age and usage of the warranted items. By optimizing two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy, this study aims to meet products’ availability requirement with the lowest cost from the manufacturer’s perspective. Moreover, customized preventive maintenance programs are designed for different customer categories. Finally, we provide a numerical example to verify the effectiveness of the proposed availability-based warranty policy. The results demonstrate that two-dimensional preventive maintenance strategy is superior in terms of warranty cost and operational availability. Meanwhile, customized preventive maintenance policy is more beneficial to both the transaction sides.

Abstract:
Investors in the Taiwanese warrant markets were investigated to examine the existence of the disposition effect to sell winners too early and hold losers too long. Empirical results indicate that: first, both the disposition effect and house money effect exist in the Taiwanese warrant market. Secondly, the issuance price of a warrant is the predominant reference for investors to make strategic decisions. Furthermore, subloser investors are more concerned with the new high more than with the new low when they make a strategic decision. In the end, warrants with different issuance prices, warrants with different returns, and warrants with different market prices were found to exhibit the differentiated disposition behavior.

Abstract:
AbstractAlvin Plantinga over the decades has developed a particular theory of warrant that would allow certain beliefs to be warranted, even if one lacked propositional arguments or evidence for them. One such belief that Plantinga focuses on is belief in God. There have been, however, numerous objections both to Plantinga's theory of warrant and to the religious application that he makes of it. In this article I address an objection from both of these categories. I first tackle an objection that attempts to show that proper function isn't a necessary condition for warrant. After tackling this, I move on to interact with the Pandora's Box Objection. This objection argues that Plantinga's epistemology is weakened by the fact that all sorts of serious religious beliefs could be warranted by using his system.

Abstract:
This paper empirically studied the impact of several variables such as moneyness, stock return, maturity, and volatility on the warrant mispricing. We selected 4 companies listed in Bursa Malaysia such as MHC Plantations Bhd, MKH Bhd, YFG Bhd, and UNISEM to investigate the mispricing of warrants. Subsequently, panel time series data employed with daily basis from 30 June 2010 until 30 June 2013. The Black-Scholes Option Pricing Model (BSOPM) used to determine the mispricing of warrant. Several panel data techniques employed in this study such as pooled-OLS, fixed effect model (FEM), and random effect model (REM). In turn, we found that FEM is well explained the determinants of warrant mispricing. Thus, empirical results suggest that moneyness, maturity, and volatility are positively and significantly explained the mispricing of warrant, while stock return does not give an impact toward the warrant mispricing. The BSOPM is consistently mispricing the warrant either in-the-money (ITM) or out-the money (OTM) warrants. The market is not efficient on the warrants traded for four companies observed

Abstract:
It is well known that sellers can use warranties to screen consumers and increase profits. The ability of warranties to signal is also well accepted. The author considers a situation in which a high quality seller needs warranty policy to both screen and signal. Through an analytical model, the objective is to identify the optimal strategy for a high quality seller that offers a base warranty and optional extended warranty for a product whose quality is not observable to buyers. The author finds that signaling can limit a seller's ability to screen, especially when buyers are willing to pay a significant premium for higher quality. To signal, the seller generally lengthens base warranties and shortens optional coverage, making the bundles for each type of buyer more and more similar. The author also provides an empirical application of the model in the Toronto used-car market.

Abstract:
A roofing manufacturer is motivated to increase accountability, minimize risk and differentiate themselves from other manufacturers to increase their sales. In order to achieve this, the manufacturer approached the research group to implement a warranty program that measures the performance information of their systems and applicators. The manufacturer submits a list of warranted jobs to the researchers, researchers perform a satisfaction check by calling the end users and report back to the manufacturer. Concepts utilized by the manufacturer include the use of warranty to ensure performance decreases risk, transparency is the best way to mitigate risk and risk can be mitigated before it happens. The research revealed that warranty program minimizes the risk for manufacturer and clients and helps differentiates the manufacturer by identifying end users that are not satisfied, applicators that are low performing, jobs that are leaking, customer retention rate and having a running log of satisfaction rating for every warranted job.

Abstract:
Many attributes contribute to product failures that result in warranty claims. In particular, there are situations where several attributes are used together as criteria for judging the warranty eligibility of a failed product. For example, automobiles warranty coverage has both age and mileage limits. The warranty policy characterized by a region in a two-dimensional plane with one axis representing product age and the other axis representing product usage is known as the "two-attribute" warranty policy. A number of procedures have been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional warranty policy. These procedures use many crisp data obtained from strictly controlled reliability tests. However, in real situations, these requirements might not be fulfilled. In extreme cases, the warranty claims data come from users whose reports are expressed in a vague way. This may be due to subjective and imprecise perception of failures by a user, imprecise warranty data record, or imprecise rate of usage record. This paper suggests fuzziness as an alternative to randomness for describing the two-dimensional warranty uncertainty. A new sets-as-points geometric view of fuzzy warranty sets is developed in this study. This view can reduce many errors of estimation and prediction of the cost associated with a variety of warranty policies including the "two-attribute" warranties and some reliability improvement warranties.
