To a large extent, mining is a waste management business. In most mining operations, metal resources are found in host rocks at concentrations of a few percent or less, resulting in the production of large quantities of wastes during metal extraction and processing. These wastes can occur in the form of bulk waste rock, and fine-grained material (tailings) that remain after the ore is ground and processed. The two principal mine-waste management challenges are the containment of tailings, and the management of contamination leaching from tailings and waste rock. Over the past decade, several high-profile, catastrophic tailings-dam failures have led to a significant change in the way mine wastes are treated. New global standards have significantly improved industry tailing-management practices, with the potential to significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the environmental impacts of mine wastes. This essay reviews the complex problem of mine waste management, and discusses emerging new approaches—both technical and regulatory—to help ensure that mine waste storage facilities are safe from catastrophic failure, and non-polluting in perpetuity. More work is needed to ensure that these new approaches become cost-effective so that they can be widely adopted by the global mining sector.

AbstractOrganizations that manufacture high volumes of complex products (e.g., pharmaceutical, automotive, food) require specific strategies to ensure efficient processing of parts and a sustainable level of inventory by waste minimization. A review of literature sources revealed how inventory is classified and managed amongst organizations and industries and key challenges that current organizations face with existing inventory management systems. In this paper, these findings are compared against each other to determine best practices and potential shortfalls that should be addressed when trying to manage inventory holistically. A study is then conducted using qualitative data from 15 semi-structured interviews to answer key questions on inventory management based on the findings from the literature survey. Responses are inductively coded and analyzed to reveal the most important factors of inventory management and determine the most prominent themes. A graphical model to represent the findings is also presented. Inventory functional accountability, inventory classification, operational strategies, visual management of inventory data, and efficient processes were some of the key themes known to be critical for effective inventory management and thus illustrated in the graphical model.

AbstractTo develop China’s spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, safety analysis of reprocessing facility is of great importance and high priority. Any methodology of safety analysis, no matter whether it is in a kind of deterministic analysis, probabilistic assessment or so-called Integrated Safety Analysis, is beginning with the identification and systematic analysis of hazards as the very first essential step. Recognizing that reprocessing facilities are, to a large extent, chemical processing plants, HAZard and OPerability analysis (HAZOP) was introduced firstly in the US. It is featured as one of the most suitable methods for performing detailed identification of a wide range of hazards.In this paper, our work on part of the concentration and denitration process (C/D process) of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) was revealed to exemplify the procedure of hazard identification and analysis for a typical reprocessing process, as the C/D process of HLLW has many symbolic features of spent fuel reprocessing, such as high radiation, various chemicals, complex chemical reactions and operation stages. The purpose of this paper was to test the applicability of HAZOP for a typical process in reprocessing.The HAZOP approach was starting with the identifications of process, reactions, equipment, and system borders. Base on the features of the given system (part), specific elements and guidewords were selected and combined to generate deviations for different operation stages. The possible causes and consequences of deviation as well as existing safeguards were taken into consideration. To make the workflow of HAZOP complete and underscore its significance, a 4-by-5 risk matrix was established to evaluate the risk levels of all consequences resulted from deviations, based on the severity of consequence and associated likelihood of occurrence.The final results were shown in a HAZOP analysis worksheet, in which twenty-two deviations were presented, revealing the potential hazards found in the C/D part. After a preliminary risk assessment using a risk matrix, eight of them were recognized as undesirable risks (only accepted when risk reduction is impracticable). The results verified that the HAZOP analysis was suitable for the processes or parts involved with high radiation and complex chemical reactions in reprocessing facilities.

Hence, the interest in transitioning from a linear to a circular model has gained momentum in the last decade. The circular economy (CE), therefore, has attracted the construction industry stakeholders to adopt the sustainable model based on the CE principles because it is the most resource-consuming and waste-producing industry. Recycling the materials and construction and demolition waste, reusing the building components, renovating and refurbishing the buildings, adapting circular building design principles, innovating for a regenerative built environment, developing circular supply chains, and enabling circular business models are the core topics to ground this new model. However, the more perspectives, the more challenging the transition. Therefore, circular transition in the construction industry becomes compelling since it has complex and distributed collaborations due to its nature. Although the number of studies has increased, the circular construction industry from the stakeholder perspective still needs to be explored. Within this point of view, this study aims to present a new framework developed to increase stakeholder collaboration for circular transition at micro, meso, and macro-scales. It approaches the micro-scale for materials, meso-scale for buildings, and macro-scale for cities. Besides, it considers the construction industry target groups determined by the European Commission to demonstrate the circular building design principles. The research obtains data by literature review, maps the findings at micro, meso, and macro-scales, and employs natural language processing (NLP) to analyze the CE strategies. Followingly, it constructs thirty-seven success factors to treat the strategies obtained by NLP. Consequently, the REVERT framework based on six dimensions and thirty-seven success factors is introduced to consider stakeholder collaboration for circular transformation in the construction industry.

AbstractAt present, there are much radioactive waste oil temporarily stored in nuclear fuel processing plants, nuclear industry research institutes and operating nuclear power plants in China, which brings great storage pressure and safety risks to the operating nuclear facilities. In this paper, the components analysis of 40# waste oil used in nuclear facilities was carried out, and the elemental composition and chemical composition of the waste oil were obtained. The analysis showed that the main elements in the waste oil were C and H, and the main chemical components were alkanes, alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols with carbon chain length of 10–40. Using Aspen Plus software, the process flow model of waste oil’s steam reforming treatment was established. Based on the components analysis results of the waste oil, organic mixtures such as ethanol, ethane and propane were selected as the model components, and the element composition close to waste oil was obtained by adjusting the proportion of each component. The mixture was used as the source input of Aspen Plus to achieve good simulation results. The experimental results obtained under Pt catalyst at 400 ℃ were in good agreement with the simulation results, which confirmed the validity of the model. The thermodynamic equilibrium analysis of waste oil steam reforming reaction was carried out by using the verified model. The influence of reaction temperature (350–1150 ℃), pressure (0.01–100bar) and water to carbon ratio (0.01–100) on reforming reaction and off gas components in balanced state was studied. The conclusions are as follows: (1) The steam reforming reaction of waste oil has no obvious inhibition when the reaction pressure is less than 1bar, so the reforming reaction should be carried out under the condition of negative pressure less than 1bar; (2) The temperature should be maintained above 750 ℃ to ensure the complete steam reforming reaction; (3) Carbon deposition can be completely eliminated when the water/carbon ratio is higher than 1, and when the water/carbon ratio is higher than 10, the product components do not change with the water/carbon ratio.

AbstractThis paper explores the potential of digital stereotomy in combination with robotic fabrication to increase the precision and complexity of stone processing. To enable the application of these techniques in outdoor environments, modular joints designed for robotic assembly are necessary. Additionally, the cutting process must be efficient and minimize material waste. To address these challenges, this research proposes a parametric wave joint design that enables rapid cutting and straightforward assembly by a robotic system. The joint contains motion space allowing it to slide into accurate assembly position, enabling the robot to complete the assembly without requiring highly precise vision or gripper in outdoor situations. Furthermore, the wave joint design eliminates the need for milling, reducing the processing time. The paper presents a robotic arm-cutting method for this joint and conducts experiments using foam and robotic arm hot-wire cutting to simulate stone cutting. The feasibility of the joint is tested through the assembly of a bent column, and finite element analysis is used to compare the stresses on two joint parts under shear force with different control parameters. The study confirms the feasibility of the wave joint design for robotic assembly and the efficiency of robotic arm cutting. The findings may inform the development of modular assemblies for robotic systems in stone processing applications.

The composite PCMs were used to replace aggregates in mortars based on different binders (i.e., hydraulic lime, and cement). A complete characterization was performed on the new PCMs assessing their thermal stability and thermal efficiency. The study of the properties of the PCM-based mortars, in their fresh and hardened states, allowed to identify those with suitable mechanical properties. These latter were, then, subjected to a further investigation to assess their thermal behavior in response to different climatic loads. Encouraging results were achieved that allowed to establish the effectiveness of the novel PCMs in thermo-regulating an indoor environment.
