Conventional wisdom in ecotoxicology predicts reductions in organismal fitness to follow from exposure-related physiological effects. This expectation may be appropriate for controlled laboratory environments, but may not necessarily reflect what is likely to take place in the wild. In an extensive review of the ecotoxicology literature, it was revealed that fish condition factor (an index of energetic fitness) is just as likely to respond favourably to pollutant exposure as it is to respond negatively. There were no sex differences in daily energy expenditure, but when hunting along riverbeds cheetahs used more energy than when hunting in the dunes, probably because they moved further in the riverbeds. There were no differences in daily energy expenditure between females in different stages of reproduction. The energetic costs of terrestrial locomotion are placed in the context of the fuel sources that animals use for generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and how these fuel sources affect an animal’s capacity for sustainable aerobic metabolism. Patterns of energy use across terrestrial gaits, sloped substrates and level ground are examined alongside explanatory models. The energetics of terrestrial locomotion is compared with the energetics of swimming and flight. Whereas the support of an animal’s weig

It is found that the energetic performance in a narrow diamond school (2dy = 0.4) is very different from that in a wide school. In the wide school, the beneficial effect wi

Abstract:
Anthropogenic climate change is amplified in the Arctic, where less sea ice enables energetic wave climates while higher air and soil temperatures increase tundra erodibility. These changes are likely to exacerbate retreat of coastal tundra yet remain poorly constrained on timescales relevant to storm wave impacts. A stochastic weather generator is used to create 1,000 synthetic hourly time series of waves, water levels, offshore sea ice concentration, and air temperatures used as forcing for an efficient coastal tundra model. The ensemble set of morphological change simulations provides a pro
