Abstract:
The aim of this project was to identify a suitable solution to the problem of landfill leachate at the North Katoomba landfill site. Options were affected by a range of constraints including economics, location and the intrusion of ground water into the landfill. The initial goal was to contain and treat the leachate on site, with the eventual target to discharge into the nearest receiving waters. A constructed wetland option was devised and researched, involving identification of the major pollutants contained within the leachate, developing a concept design and estimating the likely removal

Verrall, Karen Elizabeth. "Extraction and characterisation of colloids in waste repository leachate." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1998. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/10558.

Abstract:
Inorganic colloids are ubiquitous in environmental waters and are thought to be potential transporters of radionuclides and other toxic metals. Colloids present large surface areas to pollutants and contaminants present in waters and are therefore capable of sorbing and transporting them via groundwater and surface water movement. Much research has been and is currently being undertaken to understand more fully the stability of colloids in different water chemistries, factors which affect metal sorption onto colloids, and the processes which affect metal-colloid transport. Hunt, Joseph Edward. "Evaluation of Leachate Chemistry from Coal Refuse Blended and Layered with Fly Ash." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36050.

Full text
Abstract:
Alkaline fly ash has been studied as a liming agent within coal refuse fills to reclaim acid-forming refuse. Previous studies focused on bulk blending ash with acid-forming (pyritic) refuse. A better representation of field conditions is a â pancake layerâ of ash above the refuse. A column study was initiated to evaluate the leachate chemistry from acid-forming refuse-ash bulk blends vs. ash over refuse layers. An acidic and an alkaline ash were blended with, or layered over, acid-forming refuse and sandstone and packed into columns which were leached with deionized water twice a week fo

Abstract:
Determination of the vertical and horizontal groundwater hydraulic gradient within a landfill is the first step in determining the potential of groundwater contamination from the landfill leachate. The length of a study and the frequency at which measurements are recorded can greatly affect the description of the local groundwater environment. A more comprehensive analysis can be preformed for longer periods of study and greater measurement frequency. The intent of this study was to install a continuous groundwater level monitoring system around the st. Johns Landfill for a minimum study lengt

Paul, Craig M. "Microbial and Chemical Affects on Leachate from Calcareous Soils Treated with Wastewater Effluent." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2005. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/462.

Abstract:
Increasing human populations are placing greater strain on water resources, prompting the use of treated wastewater effluent for irrigation in some areas, including the desert regions of the Western United States. To determine the potential effects of using secondary effluent for irrigation, we applied wastewater effluent and irrigation waters to natural and artificially constructed calcareous soils in greenhouse and field lysimeters, and in soil columns. The leachate from one field lysimeter contained increased fecal coliform counts than the effluent. Leachate coliform counts were decreased o

Abstract:
Leachate from landfills is contaminated in many ways and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-contamination is one of them. Recent studies have demonstrated the environmental and human concerns of PFAS. Therefore, the treatment of leachate is important. One technique to reduce the PFAS concentration is by using aeration and foam fractionation. Hovgården is a landfill northeast of Uppsala, where previous measurements have shown high levels of PFAS in the leachate. Earlier small-scale experiments using aeration foam fractionation as a treatment technique for PFAS removal have been done suc
