Dewatering of digested sludge causes significant internal nitrogen loading to a wastewater treatment plant. Due to the high concentration of nitrogen it is more effective to treat the reject-water not directly in the main purification process but to apply a separate biological treatment procedure. The intermittent operation of sludge-press facilities, the high initial pH-value of reject-water and the quick loss of alkalinity during nitrification makes a reliable control of the process necessary. Boiling also decreases the nitrite content, but after one day of storage, the nitrite levels in the boiled water tend to rebound to higher levels than those in un-boiled water. However, bo

The effect was studied of pH value and water activity (aw) on the growth of Arcobacter butzleri and Arcobacter cryaerophilus in culture media at 30°C. Various weak organic acids were used to achieve target pH, and different humectants were used to control aw. Generally, the growth of arcobacters was inhibited at medium pH. Compared to propionic, lactic, malic and ascorbic acids (pH 5.5–5.0), formic, citric and tartaric acids in the pH range of 6.0–5.5 were more inhibitory to both arcobacter species. Both arcobacter strains were extremely sensitive to broth environme

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) was synthesized with different methods by reacting chitosan with monochloroaceticacid in the presence of sodium hydroxide under variation conditions. The above samples were characterized byFourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and soluble in water in range of pH. The CMc were soluble in watera wide range of pH and applied as corrosion inhibitor for steel in water. The inhibiting influence of CMC was studiedby potentiodynamic polarization method. It was found thad corrosion rate was dependent on water pH and CMCconcentration. The results show that optimum t
