Abstract:
This thesis addresses both the theory and simulation of diffusion of moisture in water-based biopolymer films, whose preliminary use is as adhesives on glass bottles in the labelling industry. The first part explores the kinetics of dehydration of thin films of these biopolymer materials. The second part of the thesis deals with moisture intake into both dried thin films and into the wet biopolymer gel network. Mathematical simulations based on Fick's laws of diffusion have been developed as a tool to understand the underpinning mechanisms of diffusion and of evaporation to discover which, if

Abstract:
The key to a successful wetland design is duplicating the hydroperiod of the desired wetland type. Dense wetland vegetation affects surface water flow rates by increasing flow resistance. Prior research represented the vegetation as individual stems; however, many wetland species grow in clumps. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of clumping vegetation on flow resistance and to develop a prediction equation for use in wetland design. A 6-m by 1-m by 0.4-m recirculating flume was planted with mature common rush, Juncus effusus, a common emergent wetland plant

Its abrasion-corrosion and stress corrosion performances were assessed in laboratory tests simulating the underground environment in South African gold mines. The results indicate that the alloy performs favourably in abrasive-corrosive applications, outperforming several other higher chromium containing steels which have been designed for the purpose. The alloy is also highly resistant to sec at free corrosion potential in simulated mine water. The good abrasion-cor

Thesis (MSc Food Sc)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Surface water used for irrigation is often highly contaminated on a microbial level. Using contaminated surface water for the irrigation of fresh produce can lead to foodborne disease outbreaks and Escherichia coli has been a major cause of foodborne outbreaks associated with fresh produce over the past few years. There are many possible on-farm treatment options available to decrease the high microbial loads present in surface water, one of these is H2O2 and various factors can influence its use. One of the most destructive banana diseases is Fusarium wilt caused by the soil-borne fungus, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). No effective control strategy currently exists for this disease which threatens global banana production. Although disease resistance exists in some wild bananas, attempts to introduce resistance into commercially acceptable bananas by conventional breeding have been hampered by low fertility, long generation times and associa

Increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance manifested by many HAI-causing pathogens such as Acinetobacter spp in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting present a significant challenge to those managing these infections. Consequently, much attention has been focused on the prevention of HAIs. Particular emphasis has been placed on interventions intended to interrupt patient-to-patient transmission of pathogens, such as enhanced hand hygiene and identification
