<p>Rice not collected by harvesters and natural seeds are important foods for waterfowl. Estimation of abundance of these seeds is necessary for calculating waterfowl habitat conservation needs in the Louisiana Chenier Plain (LCP) and Texas Mid-Coast (TMC). My objectives were to quantify dry mass of rice and other seeds from August-November 2010, and estimate waterbird abundances on farmed and idle ricelands in these regions from December 2010-March 2011. Rice abundance in farmed ricelands ranged from 159.7 kg/ha (CV = 66.6%) to 1,014.0 kg/ha (CV = 8.3%). Natural seed abundance in idle ric

Abstract:
Waterbirds have died of lead poisoning from ingesting lead sinkers in the United States and Europe. Other tackle and litter has also caused injury and mortality to waterbirds. Despite risks posed to waterbirds, no studies of the abundance of tackle or litter in freshwater systems of the United States have been completed. We tested the effectiveness of a metal detector to search for lost and discarded tackle, and developed a technique to correct densities of sinkers. We then quantified tackle and litter abundance at various sites around the United States. Tackle and litter densities varied amon

<p> Rivers in semi-arid regions are highly sensitive and pressured yet can support diverse assemblages of species. In central New Mexico, the Rio Grande (River) is the lifeblood of the Middle Rio Grande Valley (MRGV), a semi-arid region which maintains large urban and agricultural centers and is also the principal wintering area for the Rocky Mountain Population of greater sandhill cranes (<i>Antigone canadensis tabida</i>). Human-induced environmental change has transformed the MRGV and habitat availability prompting concerns for the population. To address these concerns, I investigated dieta

Abstract:
Stormwater quality improvement devices (SQIDs) are frequently installed to improve the water quality of runoff to match particular water quality objectives (WQOs). However, there is a lack of data to evaluate the functioning and performance of these systems, particularly in sub-tropical climates. The primary aim of this study was to collect such data. Another aim was to establish baseline monitoring of an urban catchment before the installation of SQIDs and to forecast the improvement to the water quality after installation. This study investigates the performance of two SQIDs (a pond and wetl

Abstract:
Interactions among commercial fisheries and birds have been studied in open ocean ecosystems and at aquaculture facilities. On the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, USA, a commercial harvest of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) eggs (i.e. cysts) occurs annually during fall and winter. Coinciding with commercial harvest is the use of the GSL by millions of waterbirds which has the potential to result in conflict among industry and birds. The objectives of my research were to examine fall and winter ecology of birds using the GSL and interactions with the brine shrimp cyst harvest. I examined the in

<p>No evaluations of plant and wildlife communities in Wetlands Reserve Program wetlands have been conducted in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. Therefore, I evaluated active and passive moist-soil management (MTYPE) and early and late draw-down on plant communities, waterbird use, and water quality on 18 WRP lands, Mississippi, 2007-2009. Active-early sites had greater waterfowl Vegetative Forage Quality (VFQI), percentage occurrence of grass, plant diversity, and structural composition than passively managed sites (P < 0.10). I modeled variation in densities of wintering waterbirds; the best
