Abstract:
The project site in Helsingborg is located on a pier in a harbour area in Öresund, in Sweden’s southernmost province of Skåne. Helsingborg is Sweden’s eighth largest city. It is a densely built urban city, with a large former port area under redevelopment. The project site covers an old warehouse building - Magasin 405, and its surrounding plot. The goal is to re-use and repurpose the warehouse into a attractive meeting place in the city, while adding building volumes and public space to accommodate public activities and housing units within the project site. The new proposal is aiming to revatalize the waterfront area of Oceanhamnen (the Ocean Harbour) and help connect the segregated neighbourhoods ’North’ and ’South’ (”Norr” and ”Söder”) of the city centre. The renovation of Magasin 405 will make the waterfront district, and the city as a whole, more dynamic.

Hoi, Lok-him, and 許樂謙. "Linking the world heritage and industrial waterfront: urban revitalization of Porto Interior, Macao." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2010. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47124805.

Full text
Abstract:
This design thesis is to provide an innovative design concept and approach to revitalize the area of Porto Interior. In this design, a piece of industrial waterfront in Porto Interior of Macao has been taken to revitalize the old town Macao and to enhance the protection of the Historic Centre of Macao at the same time. This design thesis is divided into 3 sections: 1) surveying, 2) planning and 3) landscape design section to show the generation of the design process. Site selection, problem findings and forecasting are supported by the surveying section. This information supports the generation of landscape planning and design concept for the Porto Interior waterfront. The main design idea is to connect the world heritage of Macao to the water edge and emphasize the linkage to other waterfronts in Macao in order to build up an entire public open space system. The “Connection” idea is to re?link the world heritage of Macao and Porto Interior waterfront in physical and mental way, as well as tangible and intangible way. In the whole design process, nine heritage paths are created in order to provide a physical linkage between the Historic Centre of Macao to Porto Interior. Main landscape areas?the celebrate nodes are generated by the intersection point between the heritage paths and the waterfront. Those nodes contain with different functions, such as plaza, garden, infrastructure, leisure and entertainment space and their design are inspired by the daily experience, story and element of the Historic Centre of Macao. Those inspirations are captured or interpreted into the nodes in mental and intangible way as well. This design idea and approach will shorten the distance between the world heritage and Porto Interior. At the same time, it provides a consistence experience to visitors and recalls visitors’ memory. The new design for Porto Interior is able to improve the living and business environment by providing higher quality public open space. Besides, vehicular circulation is improved as the design thesis proposes the harbor tunnel to link up the south and north of Macao and the light rail public transport system, moreover, pedestrian circulation is enhanced since the share street concept is promoted and the main carriageway between community and waterfront is narrowed, increasing the accessibility and adaptability from the residential area to waterfront public open space. “Connection” design vision is fully addressed in the waterfront design of Porto Interior, Macao. The new design waterfront is able to be a unique public open space to Macao, reflecting the spirit of the Historic Centre of Macao and blending with the history of industrial waterfront simultaneously.

Abstract:
The urban renewal is the inevitable product during the urban development process. Chongqing has been carrying out a serious of reconstruction and urban revitalization during these years, and the SHI-BA-TI area is included in the process. SHI-BA-TI area is one of the most famous sight-spots of Chongqing which represents the traditional culture spirit of the city. So that the high-valuable culture features of the site should be reserved in the reconstruction project and expressed in new way with creative method. The concept of my design is reserving the “old core and skin” while adding in the “new core and skin”. This reconstruction design achieved the objective that reserving the historic and cultural core of the site while adding some urban public functions upon the site, which makes the site correspond to the land value of the city center and help with enhancing the status and image of the city center.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The city of Montijo is inserted in the ‘Arco Ribeirinho Sul’ (South Riverside Arch) territory, a part of the Tagus Estuary, although presently its riverside urban front does not reflect the potential and services inherent to its location. The signs of urban decline, a result of the de-industrialisation in its water front area in the seventies, and the relocation of its fluvial terminal away from the city centre in the beginning of the New Millennium, made Montijo a city stripped of urban life and somewhat unattractive. The approach to this scenario raises some problems related to management and planning, although it also opens a large window of opportunities to rethink the territory. Bearing this in mind, this Final Master’s Project aims to introduce a new accessibility system, improving and consolidating the relationships with the south riverside, and to start, at the municipal level, a series of changes to the urban sprawl. The integration of a network of public transportation within the city centre and the creation of an intermodal station integrated in the urban sprawl are key elements for a sustainable development and planning, especially to its riverside area, with the insertion of adaptation and mitigation strategies against climate changes, in particular the rise of the sea water level. Therefore, this project aims to improve the quality of life in the city of Montijo, both in terms of accessibility and mobility, without forgetting the environmental aspect, in a way that allows this municipality to reinforce its central position in the ‘Arco Ribeirinho Sul’.

Abstract:
The Urban Renewal Program was an offshoot of the Federal housing Act of 1949, which alloted Federal funds to cities for redevelopment and slum clearance. Critics of urban renewal believe that the real intent of this program was redevelopment of the Central Business District, although officially the goal of the program was to provide a decent home and a pleasant living environment for the people. The result was improvement of inner city areas at the cost of uprooting and displacement of its residents. The Federal Urban Renewal Program ended in 1973, but local governments retained the option to use this strategy to revitalize neighborhoods. The politicians and planners of New York City have retained their faith in the Urban Renewal Program. They have modified the original program and concepts and are currently using it successfully to increase the housing stock and improve neighborhoods. The approach to urban renewal in New York City is very different from the preconceived notion that large scale demolition is the only method of implementation of an urban renewal plan. The scale and type of action varies according to specific needs of an area. Demolition is done only when necessary so that minimal relocation is required.Although provision of housing is the main thrust of the Urban Renewal Program, urban design issues are considered when preparing an urban renewal plan. This is a jointeffort by Federal, City and State agencies together with citizen input to create a better living environment for the people. This thesis analyses the reasons for this success through a discussion of case studies of current urban renewal projects in New York City. The focus of this research is on the neighborhoods of Arverne and Edgemere located in the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. This study traces the planning process for these two urban renewal areas from their inception to the current status and identifies how urban renewal can be beneficial for the social and physical environment, and how it can be used as an effective planning tool.

Abstract:
The site of today’s Civic Center in Downtown Los Angeles evolved gradually over the course of over 150 years before being dramatically transformed in the early to mid 20th century. Understanding how this area evolved and was redeveloped can help guide efforts to restore physical and historical continuity throughout the area. Specifically, this historical understanding can assist in identifying key opportunity sites within the area, such as Civic Center South, and in setting urban design goals for new development. Research for this thesis included an analysis of the area’s historic development and a review of its current conditions. The historical analysis examined how the study area initially developed and how it was subsequently transformed through redevelopment. The review of current conditions examined recent and proposed development in and around the Civic Center South site and recent policies and regulations that are guiding new development within Downtown Los Angeles. This study ultimately provides an overview of the historic development context of the north end of Downtown Los Angeles as well as a review of the developments and regulations influencing development within that area today.

Abstract:
This paper examines some processes behind the creation of place identity and place attachment using a broad theoretical framework. The framework is structured around the creation of space and place, followed by theories and models on how places are given identity and finally some possible effects of place identity. These theories are then used to examine place identity formation among residents and real estate agents in Hammarby Sjöstad, a newly developed urban residential area in Stockholm, Sweden. A total of 5 in depth interviews were carried out with local residents in different parts of the residential area, as well as 3 in depth interviews with real estate agents active in different parts of the area. The interviews were transcribed and analysed in relation to the theoretical framework as well as documents relating to the planning of the area. The study shows that there has formed a local identity in Hammarby Sjöstad, not defined by the administrative borders of the area. The perceived extent of the area most probably stem from that the lake Hammarby Sjö acts as a physical barrier between the area and the rest of the inner city. This might be the reason to the evolution of a defined perceived community there. The effects of this could be a contributing factor in the segregation that is evident in urban areas, which calls for attention to the possible effects of place identity in urban planning.

Abstract:
Nan Jing is famous for its long history and rich culture and nowadays it is facing a serious problem of character lost in company with fast modernization and construction. In south area along Qin Huai River which is the source of most non-material cultural heritages, lots of old districts are under the process of demolishing which contains the most valuable element for the area is the existing urban texture of old Nan Jing city. On the other hand, people in old south area are facing problems of over density , chaos environment and shabby houses for decades of years. How to improve people’s living standard become an important issue for local government. The purpose of the thesis is to find ways to preserve the valuable urban texture, at the same time, expand open spaces for new requirements of residential and public use. The traditional small scale and the requirement of big open space is the main conflict through out the whole design. The design is proposed to create big spaces first and use different ways to separate them into small spaces with the maintenance of the function. There are two steps in the design process. The first step is to reorganize the existing buildings and the second step is to generate landscape design. The landscape design should keep the same language with the buildings and interpret different ways to keep the original scale of the space at the same time meet the requirement of new space functions.

Archibald, Daryll G. "Does area regeneration improve residents' health and well-being?" Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/4899.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the implications of area-based regeneration for residents' health and well-being. The last three decades have seen significant investment in area-based initiatives in the UK to regenerate declining areas. However, there is a dearth of robust evidence on the impact that area regeneration practices have on health and health inequalities. This is particularly so in the case of the Scottish Area Regeneration Partnership (SARP) Programmes initiated in the mid-1990s, the evaluation of which was beset by a lack of baseline data and poor data collection generally. This study therefore seeks to address the lack of evidence by employing a rigorous mixed methods approach to evaluate the SARP programmes. Firstly, a quasi-experimental analysis of data from the Scottish Longitudinal Study (SLS) is undertaken. Comparator areas were identified using propensity score matching and a series of models was fitted to examine whether health outcomes of residents and migrants differed between regeneration areas and comparator areas. This is followed by a qualitative study exploring experiences of regeneration, carried out to provide insight into the results of the quasi-experiment. The findings provide no evidence that the programme had a positive impact on the health and well-being of SARP area residents relative to comparator area residents, and moreover, suggest that the programme may even have had a negative impact. Nor do they support the often stated hypothesis that those who move out of regeneration areas have done so because they have benefited from the programme and been replaced with residents who are likely to be more deprived. In addition, interviews with regeneration professionals and residents found that smaller initiatives overlapped with the SARPs, making it difficult to isolate the impacts of the programme under study. The conclusion reflects on the implications of these findings for the evaluation of public policy programmes.

Abstract:
In literature on residential areas, the settlement pattern is analyzed starting from their first apperance. In the pre-industrial city was no specialization of land use, the urban layout was relatively irregular, the street markets, shops, workshops and homes being mixed together. However, after industrialization for cities there was a need for housing supply and these were mostly supplied by blocks around working areas. All of these settlements were not healthy and efficient. So with regulations and policies for better settlements more healty and secure places were planned for workers with the idea of modernism. Also modernism brought the pure geometry for building design. The colour and facade of the buildings were determined related to functions or structural rationalist ideas. This standart and simple blocks were critised by some. Like, Sitte&rsquo
s (1889) eulogied historic spaces for their random and artistic city aesthetic. The sprawl of housing areas increased the need for accesibility and social integration to each other and main center. On the other hand, the residential quarters in their inner dynmics, the public realm, circulation, self character etc. must be defined for good working settlement and its environment. This resulted in traditional neighborhood properties for better residential settlements that new urbanist way of thought encouraged more ecology and pedestrian-oriented settlements. In Dü
zce after earthquake in 1999, important scale of housing necessity appeared and this need was supplied with mass housing projects in short time. In fact, 20% of the urban settlement is provided by these mass housing projects and the projects will go on. In fact, 40 % of the settlement is expected to be provided with mass housing projects. Master thesis attempts to clarify the design problems in mass housing areas in Dü
zce. The problems related to mass housing environment will be discussed, with reference to design concept, to explain whether or not these mass housing areas provide neighborhood standarts.

Abstract:
Richmond, also known as Lulu Island, was carved out from the passage of the Fraser River to the Pacific Ocean. The River and its rich delta soils have bestowed a strong fishing and agricultural industry upon Richmond. This thesis examines an area of Richmond that is located along the shores of the Fraser River where the North Arm splits into the Middle Arm. This area, specifically the Bridgeport sub-area and the Van Home Industrial Park, is a predominantly light industrial neighbourhood located along the northwest shores of Richmond. This particular site has gradually undergone redevelopment over the past ten years as commercial land uses have begun to take the place of residential and agricultural land uses. These new land uses, in many instances, are not complementary to one another and the area moves towards becoming dominated by big box commercial and tourism-based commercial. Residential land use is being replaced by these new land uses due to the noise generated from the flight path for the north runway of the Vancouver International Airport which passes directly over this neighbourhood. This thesis explores three revitalization schemes that would allow for the redevelopment of this area to proceed in such a way that creates an opportunity for a strong neighbourhood identity. One that recognizes the demands and diverse nature of the area while establishing a variety of land uses that are able to coexist and take advantage of the site's physical and experiential attributes and its strategic location within the city and region.

In the past time of Taiwan, River engineering will only take more attention on safety, economy’s benefits and flood’s control, those are the most important criteria for considerations. In the era of lacking in knowledge of ecology and ecosystem, a large number of reinforcement concrete structures and embankments replace the look of mother’s nature. The most critical parts are destroys of the original biological habitat for creatures, damage of landscape and waterfront environment. But in the recent years, awareness campaign for the importance of global ecological, environmental protection had been carried out by government or even academic teams. Those concepts been applied in river engineering and flood’s control projects. But due to the big amount of population of the waterfront, while those river engineering project is carrying out, it is difficult to pay both attention for ecological and safety, therefore ecological system been ignored or sacrificed. Following by such condition, ecological system being an important criteria and issue on coming river engineering and flood’s control project. In this study, river’s downstream urban as the main scope to explore how the urban waterfront plays role in the flood control with consideration of safety while implementing ecological engineering methods. Finally, case studies on selected river been carried, that is Sindian river at Taipei County Creek Bridge Jhong Jheng to Hua Jhong of Yungho between the waterfront side of river dikes. With the aim of upgrading the urban waterfront embankments with implementation of ecological protection, waterfront fast roads, urban and for updating the feasibility of super-levee countermeasures, suggestions for improvement, expects this case will be the reference for Taiwans’s future of embankment and river engineering.
