Abstract:
In order to elucidate the aging performance and aging mechanism of a rubber waterstop in low-temperature environments, the rubber waterstops were placed in the freezing test chamber to accelerate aging, and then we tested its tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, compression permanent deformation and hardness at different times. Additionally, the damaged specimens were tested by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. The results showed that with the growth of aging time, the mechanical properties of the rubber waterstop are reduced. At the same time, many protrusions appeared on the surface of the rubber waterstop, the C element gradually decreased, and the O element gradually increased. During the period of 72–90 days, the content of the C element in the low-temperature air environment significantly decreased compared with that in low-temperature water, while the content of O element increased significantly.

Abstract:
My Father’s Wars – Are Our Wars: Review of the Book: Alisse Waterstone (2014), My Father’s Wars: Migration, Memory, and the Violence of a Century. New York and London: Rutledge Taylor & Francis GroupThe book My Father’s Wars by Alisse Waterston is a structural expression of the need for a new anthropological orientation in history. Waterston chooses to gradually weave the narrative through the methodological directions of intimate ethnography. More precisely, it is a story about the importance of the relationship between micro-history and the fluidity of historical particularisms, between the relations of matrixes of power and reflections on anthropocultural systems of the higher kind. It is here that the value of the complex focalization point in the work is accommodated; it lies in the question in what grammatical person to tell an individual story (which at the same time leaves a strong seal the identity of the descendants) embedded in Jewish cultural history as part of the larger history of war(s) and migration trajectories in the 20th century. Wojny mojego ojca – to nasze wojny. Recenzja książki: Alisse Waterstone (2014), My Father’s Wars: Migration, Memory, and the Violence of a Century. New York and London: Rutledge Taylor & Francis GroupKsiążka My Father’s wars [Wojny mojego ojca] autorstwa Alisse Waterston jest wyrazem potrzeby nowej orientacji antropologicznej w historii.

Abstract:
Waterstops are installed in the body of concrete (to a depth of 30–60 cm) during the construction of hydraulic structures to minimize or eliminate all possible leaks at construction joints. However, they often deteriorate as a result of the thermal variations and hydrostatic pressure to which hydraulic structures are subjected over their lifetime. Since repairing or replacing deteriorated waterstops is very complicated and costly, they are normally left in place and new ones installed close by. Various new products and methods have now been developed for this purpose, but their performance is not well documented. Eighteen different products were initially chosen and subjected to a battery of laboratory tests (viscosity, chemical compatibility with water, and freeze–thaw cycling) at 23 °C, 15 °C, and 5 °C. Four of the 18 products were subsequently tested for permeability and apparent adherence in a specially designed setup. The test data showed that the waterstop that best fulfilled the criteria was a two-component polyurethane resin.Key words: adherence, chemical compatibility with water, different temperatures, hydraulic structures, permeability, viscosity, waterstops.

Abstract:
In waterproofing mountain tunnels, the tunnel joint is the weak link. To explore the waterproof failure mechanism of the tunnel joint waterstop belt and to propose an optimization method for the waterstop belt, this paper combines tests and numerical simulations, summarizes the waterproofing mechanism of the waterstop belt, establishes a finite element model of the waterstop belt considering bonding and extrusion, and studies the waterproofing ability and mechanical properties of the waterstop. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The waterproofing capacity of the water stop belt depends on its surface contact pressure and bonding force. (2) Waterstop deformation will partially destroy the bonding between the waterstop and concrete, reducing the reliability of the waterproofing mechanism. (3) When the deformation of the waterstop belt reaches a certain degree, its stress value is too large to meet the requirements of its service life. (4) The design can be optimized from two aspects: the bond between the waterstop and concrete, and the size of the waterstop.

AbstractAnastomosis of the ascending aorta to the right pulmonary artery, the so-called Waterston shunt, was undertaken as a palliative procedure for children with cyanotic congenital heart disease due to obstruction of the pulmonary outflow tract with reduced pulmonary blood flow. We present the clinico-pathological correlations in two patients who underwent construction of Waterston shunts as neonates, and subsequently died of ruptured pulmonary aneurysms in adult life. Rupture should, therefore, be recognized as a late complication of this procedure, and be considered in the long-term follow-up of such patients, especially when the shunted lung is hypertensive.

Abstract:
Introduction: Preoperative prognostic predictors are important for surgeons and parents to estimate the survival of patients with esophageal atresia (EA). The aim of this study was to update the clinical outcomes of EA treatment by comparing between the Waterston and the Spitz classification. Materials and Methods: Medical records of the patients with EA treated at Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Heath from 2003 to 2010 were reviewed. All of the patients were categorised into 3 groups of the Waterston and 3 groups of the Spitz risk factor criteria for comparing of the differences in each group and each classification. Results: One hundred and thirty-two patients (81 males and 61 females) were treated for EA during the study period. Applying the Waterston classification, survival rate was 100% in group A, 91.5% in group B and 48.8% in group C. There was no statistical difference between the survival rate in group A and group B (P = 0.119) but significant difference between group B and group C (P = 0.000). Using the Spitz classification, survival rate was 97.4% in group I, 64.4% in group II and 27.3% in group III. There was obviously statistical difference of the survival rate between each group (group I vs group II, P = 0.000; group II vs group III, P = 0.041). Conclusion: Comparing with the prognostic predictors, the Spitz classification was more valid than the Waterston criteria. The Spitz classification is suitable to use for preoperative predictor to parental counselling and comparing of treatment outcomes of EA among paediatric tertiary care centres. Museums, whether national or local, have a variety of roles and thus have diverse and sometimes conflicting pressure put on their resources. For many local museums, the provision of public displays is their most important role (Waterston 1979), since either directly or indirectly (e.g. the spin-offs of tourism) this is for the immediate benefit of their main paymaster, the ratepayer. As was cogently argued by Waterston, however, they can have another important role, which is to store specimens for academic research (see also Bassett 1979). Such material may have a national or even international importance and may thus have a greater long-term significance than the public displays.

Abstract:
The process of depriving Catholic martyrs of their lives inevitably involved the lay authorities in some expense. This is borne out graphically by the Newcastle Chamberlains’ Accounts of the early 1590s, which relate to the sufferings of Joseph Lambton and Edward Waterson, who were executed at Newcastle, and John Ingram, who died across the river in Gateshead. The details of their torments are well established. Lambton—who was born in May 1568 and was probably the youngest of all the martyrs—and Waterson were captured at Newcastle at about the same time and condemned to death at the assizes held on 20 July 1592. The execution, which was set for Saturday 22 July, was postponed until the Monday ‘in order to avoid a crowd of people’. In the event Lambton suffered alone and his execution ‘was one of the most horrible on record’. The task of hanging and dismembering Lambton's body was given to a man condemned for felony at the same assizes: he was offered a reprieve in exchange for performing the gruesome duty. The job was badly botched and a French surgeon was called in and paid twenty shillings to complete it. Waterson was given a temporary reprieve. It is recorded that the sheriff took one of the quarters of Lambton's body to Waterson ‘hoping to frighten him into submission but Waterson only kissed it’. Indeed, Waterson was made of stern stuff. His date of birth is not known but he was born in London and brought up a protestant. After travelling in Turkey he was ordained at Rheims in March 1592 and sent to England two months later. After his reprieve in July 1592 Waterson escaped but was soon recaptured. He refused to be cowed and languish quietly in his cell: the Newcastle chamberlains had to lay out money to repair ‘the door that the priest burnt in prison’. He was executed on 8 January 1593 by John Litherington, a fellow prisoner, although the grisly task of quartering the body fell to the serjeant, William Fever.

Competitiveness, to increase the market share of the company, it is necessary to improve the management level of the company in an all-round way, and maximize the economic benefits of the company. In order to improve the efficiency of cost management and operation management in the construction of water conservancy projects, this study conducts a theoretical analysis of the project cost management, taking the reinforcement treatment of the expansion joints of the culverts of the main canal project of the first phase of the water diversion water supply as a research case, and analyzes the expansion joints of the culverts of the project. This paper conducts a comprehensive investigation, proposes a repair plan using chemical bonding with external TPO waterstop and PTN petroleum asphalt polyurethane joint material, and makes a detailed investment estimate for project implementation. The results show that the bonding externally attached TPO waterstop and PTN petroleum asphalt polyurethane joint materials can meet the needs of this design for strengthening and strengthening the waterstop of the expansion joint of the culvert. The total static investment of construction engineering, mechanical and electrical equipment and installation engineering, construction temporary engineering, independent costs and basic reserve costs is 4,585,800 yuan, of which the total cost of underdrain expansion joint treatment is 3,594,600 yuan, which is in line with expectations, indicating that the water conservancy project of this design. The cost management plan is feasible.

Abstract:
The survival of infants with tracheoesophageal fistula was stratified by David J. Waterston et al. in 1962. This classification has been used as a guide to direct the timing of operative intervention in these infants. This study examines the current applicability of this classification system. The hospital records of 64 infants with esophageal atresia and/or tracheoesophageal fistula were reviewed. The survival rate was analyzed as a function of the infants’ risk stratification, birth weight, and additional anomalies. Twenty-three infants were in Waterston Group A, 20 infants in Group B, and 21 infants in Group C. The survival of all infants was 81 per cent. Six infants died after recognition of severe anomalies and withdrawal of care, four infants died of cardiopulmonary arrest, and two infants died of sepsis. The survival of infants in both Groups A and B was 100 per cent, in contrast to 43 per cent survival in Group C. Only infants who weighed <1800 g or had severe additional anomalies were at risk of dying. Therefore, the classification of infants with esophageal atresia and/or tracheoesophageal fistula may be simplified by combining Waterston's Groups A and B into a single risk stratum.

Abstract:
AbstractA central polytetrafluorethylene shunt was constructed in a 13-year-old boy after previous placement of a Waterston-Cooley shunt. Because of excessive leakage of serous fluid from the prosthesis, the boy required a second operation when the shunt was wrapped with absorbable collagen hemostat (Novacol FibrillarTM). The leakage stopped suddenly and the boy was discharged home after one week. Follow-up at four months shows no pericardial effusion and good function of the shunt.
