Abstract:
This article discusses the photographic project, ‘More Lonely Ere’, made during the COVID-19 pandemic focusing on the community of Watford, Hertfordshire, where the author was based and unable to leave. Watford will be compared to Marion Shoard’s ‘edgelands’ and the concept of rurality will be used to situate Watford as a liminal space between city and countryside but also to demonstrate the limited locality and community during COVID-19. There is increasing awareness of the high incidence of bowel dysfunction experienced by patients after sphincter-preserving rectal resection, termed low anterior resection syndrome (LARS); there remains no agreement on effective methods of treatment or effective management strategies. In West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, there were no set protocols in place prior to the development of a nurse-led LARS clinic, which has ensured that all patients undergoing anterior resection surgery are monitored, encouraged and empowered to take an active role in their own care. This research presents a regional study of the implementation of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act (commonly known as the New Poor Law) and its operation in Hertfordshire up to 1847. It examines the economic costs of poor relief across the whole of this rural southern county but it also adopts a microhistory approach to examine in detail how the New Poor Law was implemented and administered in four poor law unions: Hatfield, Hitchin, St Albans and Watford. This study makes national and intra-county comparisons of poor relief data, policy and practice. This research focuses on people as well as p
