Abstract:

Abstract:
The Society of Free Catholics was founded in 1914 by a small group of Unitarian ministers, who, inspired by Richard Baxter, James Martineau, F. D. Maurice and the Catholic Modernists, sought to combine historic Catholic sacramental and devotional practice with theological freedom, and to unite all Christians in a Free Christian Church. The members included Anglicans, Nonconformists and a few Roman Catholics. The two main leaders of the society were J. M. Lloyd Thomas of the old Meeting, Birmingham, and W. E. Orchard of the King's Weigh House, London. Their chief legacy was a series of prayer books for public worship.

Abstract:

FACHIN, DIEGO AGUILAR, MARCELA MARIA PARADA ZICHINELLI, and BOLÍVAR RAFAEL GARCETE BARRETT. "An illustrated checklist of Stratiomyidae (Diptera: Brachycera) from Paraguay, with three new synonyms and 22 new records of species for the country." Zootaxa 5190, no. 1 (September 27, 2022): 1–55. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5190.1.1.

Abstract:
The Stratiomyidae (Diptera) of Paraguay is cataloged and illustrated, and information is given on distributions, name-bearing types, synonyms, and pertinent literature. Previously to this study, the fauna of soldier flies in the country comprised 18 genera and 29 species, which has been raised up to 35 genera and 63 species, of which only nine are assigned to morphospecies level. The list of species is based on the examination of the original descriptions of all nominal species, all other references known to us containing taxonomic and distributional information, and new material examined from various collections. Images of 45 species are herein provided, which include type specimen images of seven valid species, of which three are exclusively found in the country. One subfamily is newly reported from Paraguay: Chrysochlorininae. Fourteen genera are newly reported from Paraguay: Acanthinomyia Hunter, 1900; Archistratiomys Enderlein, 1913; Auloceromyia Lindner, 1969; Chrysochlorina James, 1939; Gowdeyana Curran, 1928; Hoplitimyia James, 1934; Leucoptilum James, 1943; Neoberis Lindner, 1949; Myxosargus Brauer, 1882; Nothomyia Loew, 1869; Panacris Gerstaecker, 1857; Promeranisa Walker, 1854; Psellidotus Rondani, 1863; and Raphiocera Macquart, 1834. Twenty-two species are newly reported from Paraguay: Acanthinomyia elongata (Wiedemann, 1824); Archistratiomys rufipalpis (Wiedemann, 1830); Auloceromyia pedunculata Pimentel & Pujol-Luz, 2000; Chordonota inermis (Wiedemann, 1830); Chrysochlorina albipes James, 1939; Chrysochlorina incompleta (Curran, 1929); Gowdeyana vitrisetosus (Lindner, 1935); Hermetia flavipes Wiedemann, 1830; Hermetia pulchra Wiedemann, 1830; Hermetia teevani Curran, 1934; Leucoptilum plaumanni James, 1943; Merosargus cingulatus Schiner, 1868; Merosargus coxalis Lindner, 1949; Merosargus golbachi James in James & McFadden, 1971; Merosargus nebulifer James in James & McFadden, 1971; Merosargus obscurus (Wiedemann, 1830); Merosargus stigmaticus (Lindner, 1949); Neoberis brasiliana Lindner, 1949; Panacris nigribasis Lindner, 1949; Promeranisa nasuta (Macquart, 1850); Raphiocera armata (Wiedemann, 1830); and Sargus thoracicus Macquart, 1834. Four species are removed from the Paraguayan fauna: Cyphomyia albitarsis (Fabricius, 1805), Euryneura pygmaea (Bellardi, 1862), and Nemotelus niger Bigot, 1879 have no specimens known from Paraguay, so the inclusion of Paraguay in their distribution is a typing error; and Nemotelus eburneopictus James (1974) has its type locality corrected to Argentina. The examination of the material allows the proposition of three specific synonyms: Cyphomyia imitans Curran, 1925 syn. nov. of C. gracilicornis Gerstaecker, 1857, Panacris breviseta Lindner, 1964 syn. nov. of P. nigribasis Lindner, 1949, and Dicranophora brevifurca James, 1943 syn. nov. of Dicamptocrana jorgenseni Frey, 1934 (this species is newly recorded to Brazil, state of São Paulo), after removing D. brevifurca out of synonymy with Dicranophora bispinosa (Wiedemann, 1830). Additionally, a female lectotype is designated for Rhingiopsis enderleini Lindner, 1928.

Abstract:
AbstractFrom the beginning of Orientalist studies of the Muslim world, it was axiomatic to define certain religious phenomena in terms of their origins. Because of the tendency to view all Eastern doctrines as essentially alike, Orientalist scholars of the Romantic period invariably defined Sufism as a mysticism that was Indian in origin; from the first appearance of the term in European languages, “Sufism” was characterised as essentially Looking back at this early scholarship today, it is surprising that this unanimous belief in the Indian origin of Sufism was almost entirely unconnected to any historical evidence. From the days of Sir William Jones and Sir John Malcolm to relatively recent times, this opinion has had a remarkable longevity, despite the ludicrous appearance of some of these claims today. As an example one may consider the outrageous claim of Max Horten, in a 1928 study that sought to explain Sufism as a pure expression of Vedanta: “No doubt can any longer remain that the teaching of Hallaj (d. 922) and his circle Another pertinent example is found in an observation of William James in his 1902 Gifford Lectures, published as The Varieties of Religious Experience:In the Mohammedan world the Sufi sect and various dervish bodies are the possessors of the mystical tradition. The Sufis have existed in Persia from the earliest times, and as their pantheism is so at variance with the hot and rigid monotheism of the Arab mind, it has been suggested that Sufism must haveJames's remark illustrates, innocently enough, how widely this opinion was shared at the time by the academic world in Europe and America. It is easier to see from the perspective of the later twentieth century that this opinion was conditioned by nineteenth-century racial attitudes as well as assumptions about the unchanging nature of religions.

Abstract:
James D. G. Dunn (2008) dalam bukunya New Perspective on Paul, ia seorang diri merespons semua kritik yang dilontarkan lawan-lawan “New Perspective.” Jadi, perdebatan mengenai soteriologi Yudaisme BAK belum berakhir.

Abstract:
A change in teaching delivery at a large Australian university, from two semesters to three trimesters, was the occasion for using more formative assessment in a core first-year mathematics unit. This study compared evidence about learning outcomes for two cohorts in adjacent years. Cohort 1 was the last taught over a semester, and Cohort 2 the first taught over a trimester. There was no change in overall workload, and no change in the unit's total teaching hours, syllabus or materials. Assessments were changed for class tests during the teaching period by giving Cohort 2 access to unlimited practice and computer-assisted feedback on the questions in the test database, followed by doing the tests under examination conditions. For Cohort 2, a written assignment was also added, focused on giving a clear solution to a mathematics problem, and awareness of the need for appropriate evidence, both background and internal to the problem. Learning outcomes were compared using closely comparable tasks from the final examinations, and examining students' answers in the examination scripts. Outcomes were assessed by a method derived from the solo taxonomy, which afforded a common scale to measure the quality of learning outcomes observable in final examination scripts. Results on separate tasks, plus those for a composite score, favoured Cohort 2. The effect size for the composite score was 0.457. This indicates that the unlimited practice with computer feedback for class tests, and the writing assignment, were functioning as intended in promoting learning with understanding. References S. Abstract:
Illuminating Life: Selected Papers from Cold Spring Harbor (1903–1969) by J. Witkowski Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press (2000) pp. 383 + xvi. ISBN 0–87969-566-8 $25.00 If you are anywhere on the spectrum from frequent Cold Spring Harbor visitor to someone who barely knows that Symposia of that name were until recently published in maroon covers, and if you want to learn more of the history of this remarkable research centre, then this book is for you. At first sight, Illuminating Life looks like a coffee table book, but it is much more than that. Jan Witkowski has assembled a history of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories from their inception in 1890 through to 1968, illustrated by a selection of research papers from 1903 to 1969. Each one or two papers is preceded by an interpretative essay and a biographical note on the principal author(s), and the whole is introduced by an informative historical preface. At the end are three obituaries from the literature summarizing the lives of three key players, Davenport, Harris and Demerec. For a book of this size and compass, the essentials can be assimilated remarkably quickly, and at $25 the book is exceptional value for money. First read the preface. Then the essays. These are gems, and at two or three pages each there is no need to postpone them until later! Then dip into a few research papers. Then re-read the preface. Then you will know a lot about Cold Spring Harbor. If you read the obituaries you will know even more. Here are just a few impressions. On p. 364 there is a photograph of one of the early buildings, the James Laboratory. The laboratory was constructed for $12,000 in 1928 for biophysics research (p117). It looks tiny, but in the early years of the Symposia, which were then on biophysical topics, it housed a galaxy of summer visitors including Curtis and Cole (electrophysiology), J. Z. Young (nerve conduction), Davison and Danielli (need one say more?) and many others. If biophysics under Reginald Harris (1924–36) was what made Cold Spring Harbor Quantitative, then the quest for the genetic material and its properties is what has made it most widely famed. The book brings out the seminal contributions of Demerec, both as scientist and as director (1941–60) and of McClintock, Hershey, Cairns (director 1963–8) and others. The chosen research papers include many that are landmarks in science, from maize to bacteria and phage, and generally they are easy to read. They are largely devoid of the ponderous throat-clearing and innumerable citations that are so much a part of scientific literature today. Many examples could be given of such ease of style and freedom from excess verbage, but one will suffice here. ‘Aggregation of DNA is often suspected but seldom studied. In phage λ we found a DNA that can form characteristic and stable complexes. A first account of them is given here’. That is the entire introduction in Hershey, A. D., Burgi, E. and Ingraham, L. (1963), Cohesion of DNA molecules isolated from phage λ. Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 49, 748–755. The paper by de Lucia and Cairns (1969) on ‘Isolation of an E. coli strain with a mutation affecting DNA polymerase’ is a fitting choice with which to conclude the compilation. In the late 1960s something seemed not quite right about the Kornberg enzyme as the putative engine of replication. Several suspicious inconsistencies were accumulating. How to test these suspicions? Random mutagenesis, a precise and rapid screening assay applicable to thousands of isolates. The rest is history. What of the last thirty years? The spine of the cover says, rather enigmatically, ‘Volume 1’; the reviewer could find no statement elsewhere in the book that more is to follow. Perhaps we can look forward to Volume 2. Surely that volume will contain, among many other landmark papers, one called ‘An amazing sequence arrangement at the 5 ends of Adenovirus 2 messenger RNA’.

Abstract:
III в. э. – IV в. н. э. Abstract:
Memperingati setengah abad (50 tahun) publikasi pertama tentang double helix di Nature (1953), telah diluncurkan buku DNA:The Secret of Life.
