This master thesis is done within the Energy Systems Engineering program at Uppsala University and performed for CorPower Ocean. Wave energy converters (WECs) are devices that utilize ocean waves for generation of electricity. The WEC developed by CorPower Ocean is small and intended to be deployed in an array. Placed in an array the different WECs will interact hydrodynamically and the combined power output is altered. The aim of this thesis is to model and investigate how the array configuration affects the electric power output. The goal is to target an optimal array layout for CorPower Oce

Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, with Carbon Dioxide representing the most important long-lived forcing of this emergency. Oceans are increasingly recognized as indispensable for addressing this global challenge, and the yet unexploited energy generated by waves is the key for a sustainable future. A relative motion based heaving point absorber wave energy converter is being co-developed by researchers at the University of Victoria and SyncWave Systems Inc. To that end---this thesis represents a multi-faceted contribution to the development effort. A small scale two-body prototype wave energy converter was developed and tested in a wave tank. Although experimental problems were encountered, the results compare reasonably well to the output of a two degree of freedom linear dynamics model in the frequency domain. A two-body wave energy converter design is parameterized as a basis for a

To support the research and development in this field reliably measured wave data is collected through a measurement system that shows the exact position of a buoy. The project consists of the design, development and implementation of such a measurement system. It is divided into three subtasks: The power supply based on a solar panel and a battery The measurement part including a sensor and its implementation to the circuit Th

Ocean Data Acquisition System (ODAS) buoys are deployed in many seas around the world, a subset of these are wave monitoring buoys. Most are powered by solar panels. Many of these buoys are subjected to movement from waves, and could benefit from a wave energy converter specifically designed for ODAS buoys (WECO). A particular buoy that could benefit from this technology is the TriAXYS wave buoy [1]. This thesis discusses the development of a self-contained WECO that would replace one of the buoys four on board batteries, and harvest energy from the buoy motion to charge the remaining three ba

Abstract:
Wave Energy Converters (WECs) promise to be a viable alternative to current electrical generation methods. However, these WECs must become more efficient before wide-scale industrial use can become cost-effective. The efficiency of a WEC is primarily dependent upon its geometry and ballast configuration which are both difficult to evaluate, due to slow computation time and high computation cost of current models. In this thesis, we use evolutionary algorithms to optimize the ballast geometry of a wave energy generator using a two step process. First, we generate a function approximator (neural
