Abstract:
This study consists of a critical edition of a still unpublished part of the Cronicques d'Engleterre, a vast collection assembled by the Picardian lord, Jean de Wavrin, during the second half of the 15th century. This historical fresco covers the history of Great Britain from the legend of Albina and her sisters to the restoration to the throne of Edward IV in 1471. It's structure is regular in six volumes, each divided into six books. The present edition comprises book 4 of the first volume in its entirety, as well as the first 46 chapters of book five of the same volume. The historical period covered extends from the arrival of the Danes in Great Britain (c. 867) to the death of Richard the Lionheart in 1199. The text was established according to the ms. BNF fr. 75, produced for the bibliophile Louis de Bruges. It is accompanied by variant readings taken from the six other known witnesses of the first volume of the Cronicques d'Engleterre

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the situation in which manuscripts were created in lille ; their numbers increased as a result of it. Successively presented are the following : scribes, painters, illuminators and miniaturists, and finally one of them, the "maitre de wavrin", who illustrates ten volumes. The catalogue of these works, besides the illustrations and their legends completes the exposition. Amongst the scribes, three documented examples are presented, taken from manuscripts unknown until now : the canon copyist-illustrator (g. De pacy) ; the casual scribe (g. Picavet) ; and lastly the professional copyist (j. Du quesne). A detailed systematic study of aldermen's ledgers, over the whole of the fifteenth century, reveals other facts about painters. Above and beyond biographical features, the size of the community comes to light, its organization and its exact contribution to the pheasant banquet. From being medium-sized it becomes enriched by artists, natives of gand and tournai. The illuminators employed by the magistrate are not, for their part, affiliated to any guild and exercise at the same time other occupations. They are monks or clerics, often scribes, issued from the numerous institutions which have their abode in the capital of walloon flanders. A stylistic study completes the picture, taking avail of a miniaturist christened by us : the "maitre d'eracles". He works for jean de wavrin, a bibliophile from lille who also hires jean du quesne's services. It is thus established that this lord has recourse to his fellow citizens. The "maitre de wavrin", to whom he entrusts the illustration of unpublished tales of chivalry, takes advantage of this localization. He is the only one, or the first to illustrate these works. Their collaboration is a close one. The employer is a fiction writer himself as the prologues and frontispieces suggest, the second is a cleric, astray as the situation in lille allows

Visser-Fuchs, Carolina Theodora Livia. "Warwick and Wavrin : two case studies on the literary background and propaganda of Anglo-Burgundian relations in the Yorkist period." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2002. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1382602/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part studies the reputation of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, the Kingmaker, in the Burgundian Low Countries from c. 1450 to 1471 as far as it can be gleaned from literary, non-archival sources. Warwick's decision to support the Lancastrian claim to the throne again in 1469, his military alliance with Louis XI of France and his seizure of power in England in 1470 made him a dangerous and fascinating figure to the subjects of the Valois dukes of Burgundy. The Anglo-French alliance that he embodied threatened the very existence of the Burgundian 'state', and particularly in the Low Countries Warwick's name was intensely feared and hated. Burgundian authors voiced this hatred each in their own way, both in prose and verse, until his death took away their fear as suddenly as it had struck. The foibles of various chroniclers are revealed by their image of the English earl, but it is interesting to see that general national or 'racial' prejudices against the English played little part in their judgment. The many poems about Warwick written at the time, both popular and 'courtly', present an interesting sample of such 'cycles' of political verse, which were not unusual at the time, triggered by events that stirred people's positive and negative emotions. In this case the poems show what, on the one hand, ordinary, literate people and, on the other, the nobility at the ducal court thought about the earl and the spectre of war and destruction that he released. The poems, too, suggest that in the Low Countries there was not much national or racial prejudice against the English. The second part of this thesis attempts to evaluate the sources and method used by Jean de Wavrin in his 'Collection of Histories of England', and at the same time establish what his feelings - and those of his friends and relations - were about England and the English. In his work, too, there is little sign of prejudice, but more importantly Wavrin's history of England is particularly interesting because of his access to otherwise unknown contemporary sources and it deserves closer study than the preliminary researches presented here. It is hoped that, at the least, the value of and the need for further and fuller analysis of all his sources and the way he used them become evident in this study. The general preliminary conclusion of this very partial study of the literary background and propaganda of Anglo-Burgundian relations in the Yorkist period is that there was much interest in English affairs at the Burgundian court and in the Low Countries, but little prejudice against the English people. Warwick was feared and hated, but not because he was an Englishman; Wavrin was interested in England, but his priority was the recording of deeds of chivalry, whatever the nationality of its exponents, for the entertainment of his peers.

Thesis, Lille 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LIL10217/document.

Abstract:
The territories considered as rural have experienced deep sociodemographic disruptions which have led to major social reestablishments. As a result, the ensemble has become heterogeneous and its components unclear. The context of this study is calling out the possibilities leading to the togetherness regarding daily activities. The thesis analyzes the way social and solidarity initiatives enables the creation of appropriation and therefore territory. This study sits at the point where social and rural geography meet to examines the way the socials and solidarities initiatives, implemented within these territories, impacts upon the territory networking. Therefore the study examines the transformation of individuals into daily stakeholders and returns to the foundation of the territorial appropriation. By studying specifically four living areas specifically chosen for the diversity of their rural characteristics, we highlight daily practices at the territory level, reflecting the proximity of the non-market oriented social and solidarity initiatives. However, people can get to appropriate a place by habits and routines which create dynamic social circles and relationships. Social and solidarity initiatives are found to be inherent to territory. Finally, this study investigates the concept of socio-systemic territorial service, which underpins the contribution of social and solidarity initiatives to the overall wellness of territory. It concludes with the perspective of an evolution of the initiatives in terms of territory resources, a concept which depends on the willingness of each individual and of the groups

Mourey, Marjorie.

Full text
Abstract:
A rich text in prose from the middle of the 15th century, the Roman de Buscalus blends fictional adventures with a framework considered historical in the Middle Ages. The achievements of Buscalus and his lineage are told, and the city of Tournai, from which the characters originate, is celebrated. The present study offers a critical edition of the first part of this unpublished romance. The critical text is based on a single manuscript, the BNF, fr. 9343. An apparatus, which includes a glossary and several indexes, accompanies it, as well as an analysis in which the text is successively studied from the point of view of ecdotics, linguistics and literature. Dedicated to the duke of Burgundy Philip the Good, and copied and illuminated in the workshop of the Wavrin Master, the Roman de Buscalus has until now been considered anonymous. The analysis proposes, by gathering a body of evidence, an authorial attribution to the clerk Jean Wauquelin, the duke’s writer. The supernatural, which may be considered as the most salient feature of the romance from a literary point of view, is also examined. The manner in which the register is treated provides a glimpse of the author’s opinions. By relating the establishment of a school of magic by a devil, a journey into the infernal regions and the warlike intervention of a Mesnie Hellequin, the author demonstrates an ambivalent attitude. He approaches the supernatural in a joyful way, like a narrative tool that allows him to devise extraordinary stories, while concurrently displaying his condemnation of the use of black magic and the act of consorting with demons

Abstract:
This paper presents an approach to gesture recognition including the use of a tool in order to extract certain key-points of the human body in each frame, and then processing this data and extracting features from this. The gestures recognized were two-handed waving and clapping. The features used were the maximum co-variance from a sine-fit to time-series of arm angles, as well as the max and min of this fitted sinus function. A support vector machine was used for the learning. The result was a promising accuracy of 93% ± 4% using 5-fold cross-validation. The limitations of the methods used are then discussed, which includes lack of support for more than one gesture in the data as well as some lack of generality in means of the features used. Finally some suggestions are made as to what improvements and further explorations could be made.
En stodvektormaskin (Support Vector Machine) användes for inlärningen.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper deals with an experimental study of propulsive performance of aquatic mobile robot using waving motion of a flexible plate modeled on the flexible caudal fin of fish. The flexible plate is attached at the trailing edge of the oscillating robot body in the shape of wing pitching and heaving around the leading edge of the body, and the waving motion of the flexible plate is excited by motion of the oscillating body. In the experiment, first, the propulsion force and the side force generated by the waving motion of the flexible plate are measured for various length, exciting frequency and flexibility of the flexible plate in stationary water in a channel. Secondly, the swimming speed and propulsive efficiency are examined. As a result, it is found that the propulsive performance of the robot using flexible plate is higher than that of the rigid plate. And the high propulsive performance of propulsive efficiency of 62% and mean swimming speed of 0.3m/s are obtained by using the waving motion of the flexible plate.
