Full textDetta examensarbete undersöker olika möjligheter att implementera Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) för ett larm- och krishanteringssystem kallat Wearable Command Unit (WCU) utvecklat av Saab Security Systems. För att kunna nå nya marknader och utvecklas som produkt, är det viktigt att WCU-systemet på ett enkelt sätt kan integreras med externa system. Detta examensarbete fokuserar på att ta fram en generell lösning för att kommunicera larminformation från externa system till WCU. Ett förbestämt krav var att lösningen måste vara baserad på SOA. Begreppet SOA undersöks och dess tillämpningsbarhet för WCU undersöks. Ett designförslag baserat på en kombination av öppna informations- och kommunikationsteknologier gjordes för att visa hur WCU kan använda SOA för att ta emot larminformation från externa system. Designförslaget utvärderades genom ett belastningstest, samt genom att jämföra dess konformitet med SOA. Belastningstestet visade att designförslaget kan processa inkommande larm i en hastighet av 2 ms per meddelande när klienten och servern körs på samma maskin. Resultatet av jämförelsen visade att WCU kan, med små modifieringar, implementera en SOA. Detta examensarbete har endast undersökt användandet av SOA vad gäller larminformation, men det finns även en klar tendens mot att integrera annan information ifrån olika system för att på så sätt ge användare av systemet kvalitativ information. Genom att ge framskjutna enheter lämplig information, när och där de behöver det, kan de bli bättre förberedda på att rädda liv och egendom, och samtidigt minska olycksrisken för allmänheten. Ett viktigt resultat från detta examensarbete är iakttagelsen att ett system som behöver integreras med många andra olika system kan bli bättre förberett genom att göra det SOAbaserat. För att ett system ska vara SOA-baserat krävs att det har ett gränssnitt baserat på plattformsoberoende protokoll mot andra system. System som WCU, som är baserade på Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), kan med lätthet lägga till ett sådant gränssnitt genom lämplig konfigurering av WCF.

Full textRapporten beskriver utvecklandet av en RESTful web service för mobilapplikationer. Web servicen tillgängliggör resurser från ett befintligt system som kallas kompetensdatabasen. Kompetensdatabasen innehåller information om konsulters kompetenser och de uppdrag som utförts vid IT-konsultföretaget Nethouse AB. Web servicen utvecklades enligt principerna för REST och ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) vilket innebär ett fokus på att tillgängliggöra resurser. Resurserna görs nåbara genom HTTP-protokollet och dess metoder, det vill säga samma tekniker som används på webben. Stor vikt har lagts på att designa systemet enligt dessa principer. För att servicen inte skulle läcka information till konkurrenter eller bryta mot personuppgiftslagen behövde någon form av säkerhetslösning implementeras. En autentiseringsmodell togs fram för att göra systemet nåbart enbart för anställda vid företaget.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nampak is the industry leader in the paper and packaging industry. There are over 20 divisions which fall under the Nampak banner, supplying a diverse range of primarily packaging material, from plastic carrier bags to glass bottles. A few years ago top management realised the need to move the Nampak group into the realm of world class. This paradigm shift required a substantial education and training initiative, and so the Nampak "Colleges" were created to support and underpin the World Class Manufacturing & Services ethic that each and every division would adhere to. All Nampak training interventions or processes are based on experiential learning. Candidates are introduced to concepts and theory, given opportunities to analyse case studies, conduct plant-level audits and give feedback to the general managers of the plants. In addition each delegate is given a project to be completed in the work place. The aim of this research is to assess the effectiveness of the Nampak WCM&S College 5 using an evaluation framework. The literature was reviewed in order to: • develop an evaluation framework; • establish an evaluation process; • facilitate the construction of a relevant test format. The test instrument was designed based on the principles of test construction and Kirkpatrick's model for evaluation. Data was collected for pre and post-tests for phase 2 and phase 3, analysed using descriptive statistics and reported on at the beginning at each phase as well as at the Trade Show. The evaluation results proved to be very positive and the evaluation process was incorporated into the design of all future College interventions.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Nampak is die nywerheidsleier in die papier en verpakkingsbedryf. Daar is meer as 20 afdelings wat deel van Nampak uitmaak wat 'n diverse omvang van hoofsaaklik verpakkingsmateriaal verskaf, insluitend plastiek draagsakke en glas bottels. 'n Paar jaar terug het hoofbestuur besef dat Nampak tot wêreldklas status moet aandryf. Hierdie paradigma verandering het 'n aansienlike opvoedings- en opleidings-fokus benodig en die Nampak "Colleges" is geskep om die "WCM&S" etiek te ondersteun wat elke afdeling by sou bly. Alle Nampak opleiding tussenkomstes of prosesse word gebasseer op experiential geleerdheid. Kandidate word aan konsepte en teorieë voorgestel word geleenthede gegee om gevalstudies te analiseer, fabriek oudite te doen en terugverslag te gee aan die algemene bestuurders van die fabrieke. Elke afgevaardigde word ook 'n projek gegee om by die werk te voltooi. Die doel van hierdie navorsing is om die doeltreffendheid van die Nampak WCM&S College 5 te evalueer deur middel van 'n evalueeringsraamwerk. Die leesstof was hersien om 'n evalueerings raamwerk te ontwikkel; 'n evalueerings proses te vestig; die konstruksie van 'n toepassende toetsformaat aan te help. Die toets-instrument was ontwerp gebaseer op die beginsels van toets konstruksie en die Kirkpatrick model vir evalueering. Data is bymekaar gemaak vir voor- en na-toetse vir fases 2 en 3, geanaliseer deur middel van beskrywende statistieke en daar is verslag daarop gedoen by die begin van elke fase asook by die Handeisskou. Die evalueering resultate was baie positief en die evalueerings proses is saamgebring by die ontwerp van alle toekomende College tussenkomstes.

Full textCom o crescimento da Internet como plataforma global para partilha de informação, cresceu também a diversidade de tipologias de informação a ser partilhada e consultada, nomeadamente informação geográfica. Neste âmbito surge como preocupação a interoperabilidade entre sistemas permitindo que sistemas diferentes possam “comunicar”, partilhando informações e recursos. O presente trabalho propõe-se recolher informação sobre a utilização das normas de interoperabilidade do Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) na Administração Pública em Portugal, permitindo analisar e tirar conclusões relativamente a esta temática, tendo também em conta o seu enquadramento legal nacional.
With the growth of the Internet as a global platform to share information there is also an increase in the diversity of the kinds of information shared and accessed, including geographical information. In this context there is a concern with the interoperability between systems, allowing different systems to “communicate” among themselves, sharing information and resources. This dissertation collects information about the usage of interoperability norms of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) in the Portuguese Public Administration, with a subsequent analysis and drawing of conclusions regarding this matter, taking also into account the national legal framework.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the perceptions of the staff of the Department of Local Government in the Western Cape (WC) regarding workforce diversity as part of diversity management. A literature review is presented and this research shows that organisations in South Africa and around the world have come a long way with regard to understanding and appreciating workforce diversity. The literature review also revealed the important facilitating role HR diversity management plays in improving the performance of organisations, as well as in creating unity amongst employees. What is also important is the fact that organisations now understand and realise the important role diversity management programmes and practices play in their own survival. Therefore various steps are available for organisations to ensure that the benefits are achieved from having diverse employees in their workplace while effectively integrating these employees into the organisation. A background on the Department of Local Government (WC) is provided, which highlights the Department’s priorities and Key Performance Areas (KPAs) as set out in its Annual Performance Plan (APP). The KPAs of the Department are dynamic and not influenced by political shifts, as in the case of municipalities. However, the priorities of the Department are similar to the strategic objectives that are embedded within the 30 municipalities. The priorities of the Department are parallel to those of the municipalities’ priorities in order to ensure that the Department and municipalities achieve their objectives together. It is therefore the Department’s responsibility to assist municipalities in achieving their strategic objectives by constantly monitoring and evaluating their level of performance. If a municipality performs badly, the Department must assist where necessary. The research findings regarding diversity management show that the employees are unaware whether a diversity management policy has ever existed or whether any training of such a nature has been conducted within the Department. Data show that limited effort has been made by the Department to develop a diversity management policy. The findings also indicate that more diversity management programmes and training are needed, in order to bring about awareness of workforce diversity and the successful management of diversity. What was also clear is that not enough diversity audits have been conducted to determine the level of diversity within the Department; and most importantly it is also illustrated that a limited number of staff is housed within the HR unit to assist the Department in creating a strong diversity environment that supports the wellbeing of the staff and the Department. Finally, the thesis provides recommendations for the Department on how to be an inclusive entity, but these recommendations can only be successful if top management and HR have the necessary ability to successfully implement the following recommendations (interventions): develop a diversity management policy to guide the Department on diversity issues; develop diversity management programmes to ensure that all staff members are briefed on all diversity issues; and create a monitoring system to ensure that the policies and programmes are updated as new entrants enter the Department. It is therefore a requirement that these interventions are placed in the Department’s Employment Equity Plan and, more importantly, form part of their Annual Performance Plan (APP). If there is commitment from HR, top management and the employees, these interventions will create a safe, friendly, and hard-working environment with good performance levels.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die persepsies van die personeel van die Departement Plaaslike Bestuur, Wes-Kaap, met betrekking tot werkmagdiversiteit as deel van die bestuur van diversiteit. ’n Literatuurstudie word aangebied en vanuit hierdie navorsing word getoon dat organisasies in Suid-Afrika en dwarsoor die wêreld ver gevorder het met die verstaan van en waardering vir werkmagdiversiteit. Die literatuurstudie het ook lig gewerp op die belangrike fasiliterende rol van die bestuur van diversiteit deur Menslike Hulpbronne vir die verbetering van die prestasie van organisasies, sowel as in die bewerkstelliging van ’n gevoel van eenheid tussen werknemers. Wat ook belangrik is, is dat organisasies nou die belangrike rol van diversiteit-bestuurprogramme en -praktyke verstaan en besef hoe hul eie oorlewing daardeur geraak word. Verskeie stappe kan deur organisasies onderneem word om te verseker dat dit voordelig is om ’n diverse groep werknemers in hul werkplekke te hê en hierdie werknemers doeltreffend in die organisasie te integreer. Die agtergrond van die Departement Plaaslike Bestuur (Wes-Kaap) is voorsien, met beklemtoning van die Departement se prioriteite en sleutel prestasie areas (KPA’s) soos in die Jaarlikse Prestasieplan uiteengesit; sleutel prestasie areas van die Departement is dinamies van aard en word nie, soos in die geval van munisipaliteite, deur politieke omwentelinge geraak nie. Die prioriteite van die Departement is egter soortgelyk aan die strategiese doelwitte wat in die 30 munisipaliteite vasgelê is. Die prioriteite van die Departement loop ewewydig met dié van die munisipaliteite om te verseker dat die Departement en munisipaliteite hul doelwitte saam bereik. Die Departement is dus verantwoordelik om munisipaliteite by te staan in die bereiking van hul strategiese doelwitte deur voortdurende monitering en evaluering van hul prestasievlak. Indien ’n munisipaliteit swak presteer, moet die Departement hulp verleen waar dit nodig is. Die bevindings van die navorsing oor diversiteit dui daarop dat werknemers nie van die bestaan van enige diversiteitbestuurbeleid óóit bewus was nie, óf geweet het of enige opleiding van dié aard al in die Departement aangebied is nie. Data toon die beperktheid van die Departement se pogings om ’n beleid vir die bestuur van diversiteit te ontwikkel. Die bevindings toon verder dat meer diversiteitbestuurprogramme en -opleiding benodig word om bewustheid van werkmagdiversiteit en die suksesvolle bestuur van diversiteit daar te stel. Wat ook duidelik was, is dat te min diversiteitkontrole onderneem is om die vlakke van diversiteit binne die Departement te bepaal. Die belangrikste bevinding is egter dat daar slegs ’n beperkte aantal personeellede in die Menslike Hulpbronne-eenheid is om die Departement by te staan in die skepping van ’n sterk diversiteit-omgewing wat die welstand van die personeel onderskraag. Die tesis doen voorstelle aan die hand vir die Departement oor hoe om ’n inklusiewe entiteit te wees. Hierdie voorstelle kan egter slegs suksesvol wees indien die Hoofbestuur en Menslike Hulpbronne oor die nodige vermoë beskik om die volgende aanbevelings (intervensies) te implementeer: Ontwikkel ’n beleid vir die bestuur van diversiteit om die Departement ten opsigte van diversiteit te begelei; ontwikkel diversiteitbestuurprogramme om te verseker dat alle personeellede oor diversiteit ingelig word; en skep ’n moniteringstelsel om te verseker dat die beleide en programme bygewerk word namate nuwelinge by die Departement aansluit. Dit is dus ’n vereiste dat hierdie intervensies in die Departement se diensbillikheidsplan opgeneem word en, wat nog belangriker is, deel vorm van die Jaarlikse Prestasieplan. Indien Menslike Hulpbronne, topbestuur en werknemers hulle hiertoe verbind, sal hierdie intervensies ’n veilige, vriendelike en hardwerkende omgewing met goeie prestasievlakke tot stand bring.

Full textThis work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

Full textThe present quantitative study seeks to 1) measure pre-service teachers’ metalinguistic knowledge, 2) describe the quality of French as a second language (FSL) pre-service teachers’ written corrective feedback (WCF), and 3) examine the relationship between pre-service teachers’ metalinguistic knowledge and the quality of their written corrective feedback (i.e., teachers’ metalinguistic awareness). A group of 18 French as a second language pre-service teachers following the initial teacher training program in Montreal, participated in the study. Participants were assigned 1) a task of analytical abilities to measure their metalinguistic knowledge, and 2) a task of written corrective feedback provision to evaluate the quality of their written corrective feedback in terms of error location and the metalinguistic explanation provided. Descriptive analyses were undertaken to answer the first two research questions. Correlation analyses were performed to examine whether there exist any relations between pre-service teachers’ metalinguistic knowledge and the quality of their WCF. Among other things, results indicated that 1) while the error location of WCF provided was precise, 2) the metalinguistic explanation provided by the participants was not accurate, 3) there is a relationship between pre-service teachers’ metalinguistic knowledge and the quality of written corrective feedback.

en el presente trabajo, se especifica un procedimiento general, que permite desarrollar sistemas web para la publicación y ejecución de geoprocesos como servicios, con el fin de brindar un conjunto de herramientas que le permita al usuario generar productos a demanda. la metodología presentada, se basa en el desarrollo de un software de aplicación con dos componentes principales. (a) un servidor de mapas para el acceso y entrega de datos geográficos y un visualizador web de mapas para la interacción con el servidor; (b) un componente de geoprocesamiento que deberá ser vinculado al servidor de mapas y una interfaz de acceso web a los geoprocesos, con procesos predefinidos, para efectuar cálculos espaciales sobre los datos disponibles. como resultado, obtenemos una infraestructura informática que permite publicar, describir y ejecutar geoprocesos, como servicios web.
this paper specifies a general procedure for the development of web systems that will publish and execute geoprocesses as services, with the aim of providing a set of tools which will allow users to generate products on demand. the methodology here presented is based on the development of application software made up of two main components, namely (a) a map server for access to and delivery of geographical data, including a web display of maps for interaction with the server; and (b) a geoprocessing component which will have to be linked to the map server, including a web interface for access to geoprocesses, with preset processes, in order to perform spatial calculations on the available data. as a result, we will obtain an it infrastructure which will allow us to publish, describe and execute geoprocesses as web services.
