Abstract:
AbstractAdult education classes in astronomy have been conducted in Sydney for many years. The University of Sydney has been especially prominent in this field, holding classes in conjunction with the Sydney WEA prior to 1983, and independently since then. In the last 11 years, most of these courses have been conducted by postgraduate students from the Astrophysics and Astronomy departments in the University’s School of Physics. This paper describes these courses and points out some future possibilities in the teaching of astronomy to adult classes.

Abstract:
On 16 December 2015 a severe thunderstorm and associated tornado affected Sydney causing widespread damage and insured losses of $206 million. Severe impacts occurred in Kurnell, requiring repairs to Sydney's desalination plant which supplies up to 15% of Sydney water during drought, with repairs only completed at the end of 2018. Climatologically, this storm was unusual as it occurred during the morning and had developed over the ocean, rather than developing inland during the afternoon as is the case for many severe storms impacting the Sydney region. Simulations of the Kurnell storm were conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model on a double nested domain using the Morrison microphysics scheme and the NSSL 2-moment 4-ice microphysics scheme. Both simulations produced severe storms that followed paths similar to the observed storm. However, the storm produced under the Morrison scheme did not have the same morphology as the observed storm. Meanwhile, the storm simulated with the NSSL scheme displayed cyclical low- and mid-level mesocyclone development, which was observed in the Kurnell storm, highlighting that the atmosphere supported the development of severe rotating thunderstorms with the potential for tornadogenesis. The NSSL storm also produced severe hail and surface winds, similar to observations. The ability of WRF to simulate general convective characteristics and a storm similar to that observed displays the applicability of this model to study the causes of severe high-impact Australian thunderstorms. Abstract:
The Dictionary of Sydney www.dictionaryofsydney.org is a ground breaking, multimedia city biography that can present the history of metropolitan Sydney on the web, in your hand and on the street. Through its historical model the digital repository allows historical elements to be classified, connected, geo-referenced and mapped through space and time. By combining the fine-grained with the global, the histories in the Dictionary mirror the experience of the metropolis – the intimate and the personal interact with the impersonal and indeed often random nature of city life. A purely digital history redefines the possibilities for urban history and public history. This paper will introduce the Dictionary of Sydney, share some of the challenges and joys of building a digital history, and reflect upon the ways digital history as a publication form is shaping and changing the practice of public history.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a data-driven method that provides water quality prediction within the entire Woronora delivery system in Sydney. Specifically, the key factors relating to water quality are identified through factor analysis. A Bayesian parametric decay model is formulated using the key factors to predict water quality. To estimate the water travel time, which links the upstream (reservoir) data to the downstream (resident) data, the hydraulic system is employed to capture the topology of the delivery system. Moreover, the uncertainties of both data and the model are analysed to define the boundaries of prediction for better decision making.

Abstract:
Admired all over the world and loved by locals for its natural beauty, Sydney Harbour is enjoyed by thousands of people every day. But rarely do we look below the surface where, beneath all the hustle and bustle, lively communities go about their business. With underwater forests and gardens, hundreds of species of fish and thousands of invertebrates, Sydney is as colourful and diverse below the water as it is above! Underwater Sydney celebrates Sydney’s incredible harbour and coast through eclectic stories and stunning underwater photography. It also explores the challenges the harbour is facing today after more than 200 years of coastal development and the role that marine science plays in maintaining the harbour’s health. Underwater Sydney will open your eyes to the rich marine life that makes the Sydney estuary and coast so special.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter argues that the historical geographies of Toronto’s Church and Wellesley Street district and Sydney’s Oxford Street gay villages are important in understanding ongoing contemporary transformations in both locations. LGBT and queer communities as well as mainstream interests argue that these gay villages are in some form of “decline” for various social, political, and economic reasons. Given their similar histories and geographies, our analysis considers how these historical geographies have both enabled and constrained how the respective gay villages respond to these challenges, opening up and closing down particular possibilities for alternative (and relational) geographies. While there are a number of ways to consider these historical geographies, we focus on three factors for analysis: post-World War II planning policies, the emergence of “city of neighborhoods” discourses, and the positioning of gay villages within neoliberal processes of commodification and consumerism. We conclude that these distinctive historical geographies offer a cogent set of understandings by providing suggestive explanations for how Toronto’s and Sydney’s gendered and sexual landscapes are being reorganized in distinctive ways, and offer some wider implications for urban planning and policy.

Abstract:
A province-wide network of Community Access Internet sites was supported during the summers of 1996 and 1997 by Wire Nova Scotia (WiNS), a government funded program to provide staffing, training and technical support for these centres. The program was managed remotely from an office in Sydney, Nova Scotia (Canada) using a variety of Internet-based technologies, including email, a web site, conference boards, real-time chat, and mailing lists. Remote management enabled the efficient and low-cost operation of a program involving 67 sites with field placements, plus six regional coordinators and the technical and administrative staff at the hub in Sydney. Effectiveness of remote management was enhanced when employees participated in an initial face-to-face regional training workshop. This training not only familiarized the employees with the communications technologies, but, perhaps more importantly, put a human face and personality to the messages that later came electronically over the Intranet.

Abstract:
This article highlights the research findings of a digital governance survey conducted in the fall of 2005. The study replicates a 2003 survey of large municipalities worldwide. This longitudinal assessment, based on the Rutgers-SKKU E-Governance Performance Index, focused on the evaluation of current practices in government, with emphasis on the evaluation of each Web site in terms of digital governance. Specifically, we analyzed security, usability, content of Web sites, the type of online services currently being offered, and citizen response and participation through Web sites established by city governments. Based on the 2005 evaluation of 81 cities, Seoul, New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Sydney represent the highest performing cities in digital governance. There were only slight changes in the top five cities when compared to the 2003 study. Moreover, there continues to be a divide in terms of digital governance throughout the world among the 30 developed nations belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and non-OECD member nations.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the history and development of an international distance learning relationship, which was established between an Australian and Japanese university. In 2002, the University of Sydney, Australia and Gifu University in Japan established a lecture exchange program whereby live lectures would be transmitted through Web-based video conferencing. Further development of the relationship resulted in an additional three-year program whereby an entire course, consisting of weekly live lectures transmitted from Australia, was offered not only to local university students but citizens of Gifu city. An empirical account outlines the origin and purpose of this course, analyzes its success, discusses pedagogical and cultural issues and challenges that arose, and makes recommendations for further development. The final section of the chapter suggests possible future directions, including a theoretical model for worldwide international distance education.

Abstract:
Kristin Beise Kiblinger responds to Elaine Padilla and Jon Paul Sydnor in conversation with the view of God developed by John D. Caputo. She observes points of agreement between Caputo and both comparative theologians with their common emphases on immanence (Padilla) and relationality (Sydnor), but argues that Caputo’s thought also challenges them both in significant ways. For Caputo, we inevitably condition what we know and thus God as the unconditioned cannot be known or present but remains “to come.” Caputo uses Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction as a hermeneutic principle that exposes conditionedness and thus keeps our theology humble and open. Kiblinger suggests that Sydnor and Padilla could benefit from following Caputo in his theology because Caputo’s work 1) helps respond to problems that have plagued past theology, 2) illuminates issues involving immanence and relationality, and 3) helps to justify (and lay the necessary theoretical groundwork for) comparative theology.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the changed nature of literacy within new communication contexts, the literacy that is needed for reading, viewing, responding to and producing multimodal and digital texts. Potentials for redesigning literacy pedagogy within new modes of communication are demonstrated for educational contexts. As a basis for this discussion, the author analyses classroom evidence using examples of three case studies from a research project conducted in primary schools in Sydney, Australia. In the research project teachers in several primary schools worked with the author/researcher to consider ways of redesigning literacy pedagogy within e-learning and multimodal classroom contexts. Interesting and significant changes occurred in their classroom practice. Teachers developed programs that incorporated a range of technology, including Web 2.0, and were able to maintain a balance between print-based and new literacies. Examples are presented and discussed to highlight the differences in pedagogy needed for ‘multimodal literacy’ combined with traditional literacy practices.

Abstract:
Australia’s contract law is an amalgam of common law rules, equitable principles, and statute law. Its genesis lay in centuries of development of these three branches of English law. Principles of modern contract law had their roots in the rise of English maritime law during the sixteenth century. In 1788, England established a penal colony at Sydney Cove, seeding the colony of New South Wales. At that moment, all existing English contract law simply flowed into this ‘new’ land as intellectual baggage. Slowly Anglo Australia’s legal and legislative framework evolved from a patchwork of distinct English colonies into a commonwealth of Federal, State, and Territory Governments. The gloss of contract law took on an increasingly antipodean sheen. This resultant ‘system’ of law is a complex relationship between common law, equity, and Federal, State, and Territory legislation. Throughout this chapter we shall use the term ‘general law’ to mean the principles and rules of common law and equity.

Abstract:
As globalization continues to make cross-cultural interactions more of a reality, the need to develop the cultural competence of students and staff is imperative. The University of Sydney has included cultural competence in its 2016-20 strategic plan, necessitating the embedding of cultural competence across all functions of the University. The National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC) at The University of Sydney was created to lead the thinking on cultural competence, which includes creating teaching and learning resources to guide University students and staff on their cultural competence journey. In this paper, we discuss a cultural competence seminar developed and delivered by the NCCC to students participating in a broader program designed to educate and prepare them to be global citizens. We will examine the efficacy of our approach to cultural competence training with this particular cohort of students.

Abstract:
We reported the large-eddy simulations of a series of bluff-body flames varying air-fuel velocity ratio. The air-fuel ratio γ is defined by the ratio of external air velocity to central jet velocity, ranging from 0.05 to 0.50. The case of γ = 0.32 is exactly same the Sydney bluff-body HM1e flame. Firstly, the mathematical model and numerical method were validated in details as the simulation results are all in good agreement with measurements in HM1e flame. Then the interaction between turbulence and thermo-chemistry is revealed. As γ increases, external coflow trends to dominant the flame behavior. The stoichiometric mixture fraction shifts from the area between recirculation zone and central jet to the area between external flow and recirculation zone. Corresponding, the flame changes from jet-like, columnar to hat-like flames. The different level of local extinction and reignition is also observed. Local extinction and reignition occurs in jet-like and columnar flames. As γ increases, local extinction becomes easier and reignition becomes harder.

Abstract:
Large eddy simulation/Flamelet progress variable approach is employed in current research to investigate how flame behaviour is influenced by bluff-body and coflow composition. We used Sydney bluff-body burner as the target burner. Computation grid in cylinder coordinates is approximately 2.7 million in total number, extended to the downstream location 80 times of jet diameter. Three coflow compositions with different oxygen ratio at the same inlet velocity are considered. Comparing to jet flames with hot and diluted coflow, instantaneous and statistical results showed that an introduction of bluff-body preheats the fuel and shortens the flame length. At lower oxygen ratio condition, a weaker reaction zone emerged, marked by lower temperature and OH concentration; the flame appeared lifted gradually, leading to a potential MILD combustion. Besides, bluff-body effect behaves differently in these flames: at lower oxygen ratio condition, a large-scale distribution of CH2O appeared as a marker of partial premixing and preignition reaction in recirculation area; on the contrary, in higher oxygen ratio case, the recirculation area brings out more reactive fuel at lower speed and higher temperature, hence ignitable in the vicinity of bluff-body.

Abstract:
Internationally, the COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly disrupted the education sector. While NSW has avoided the longer periods of remote learning that our colleagues in Victoria and other countries have experienced, we have nonetheless been provoked to reflect on the nature of schooling and the systemic support we provide to transform the learning of each student and enrich the professional lives of staff within our Catholic learning community. At Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP), a key pillar of our approach is to create conditions that enable everyone to be a leader. Following the initial lockdown period in 2020 when students learned remotely, we undertook an informal teacher voice piece with the purpose of engaging teachers and leaders from across our 80 schools in Greater Western Sydney to reflect on and capture key learnings. This project revealed teachers and leaders reported very high feelings of self-efficacy, motivation and confidence in their capacity to learn and lead in the volatile pandemic landscape. These findings raised the question: how do we enable this self-efficacy, motivation and confidence in an ongoing way? This paper documents the systematic reflection process undertaken by CEDP to understand the enabling conditions a system can provide to activate everyone to be a leader in the post-pandemic future and the key learnings emerging from this process.
