Abstract:
Post-weaning is the most crucial period in pig management. Associated with weaning are marked changes to the histology and biochemistry of the gut which cause decreased digestive and absorptive capacity and contribute to post-weaning diarrhoea. In last years, the interest in developing management and feeding strategies to stimulate gut development and health in newly-weaned pigs was increasing. In order to increase general health in post-weaning piglets and be alternative to in-feeding antibiotic, three trials were created in this thesis to determine the utilizations of some functional foods

Breastfeeding involves phases of initiation, continuation, and weaning. Research to date has focused upon its initiation and continuation rather than the later phases, when the child is weaned from the breast. Selective aspects relating to weaning have been explored to determine infant feeding practices such as the timing of food introduction. However, that research has focused upon developing countries where the impact of infant feeding patterns and weaning practices have a significant impact on infant growth and child health. The interaction of sweet potato flour and proteins (soya and fish) were investigated. Starch was the most abundant nutrient in sweet potato (58 to 79 g/100g flour dry weight). Resistant starch ranged between 17 and 29%; these values were lower in sun-dried samples compared with freeze-dried ones and were reduced significantly on boiling. The in vitro starch digest

Introduction: Gut microbial composition has been associated with immune-mediated diseases. Breastfeeding yields a microbiota rich in bifidobacteria and promotes colonization by lactobacilli. Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli are considered health-promoting and are used as probiotics, i.e. live microbial food supplements which when ingested in adequate amounts confer a beneficial effect on the host. During weaning the developing gut immune system is exposed to an increasing variety of antigens from both foods and gut microbiota. The demand for livestock products is expected to increase as much as 50 percent by 2050. This increase in the consumption will demand enormous resources. Animal feed is the most challenging, because of the limited availability of natural resources, climatic changes and food-feed-fuel competition. The costs of conventional feed resources, such soymeal, fishmeal and standard cereals like corn, are very high and moreover their availability in the future will be limited. For this reason, scientific research is focusing on the study of alternative sources (e.g., by/co-products from cereals process

Winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus, is being developed for aquaculture in Atlantic Canada. Since larval culture has been successful, research can now address problems at the juvenile stage such as weaning, diet and optimal growth environment. Weaning, a critical stage in culture of any flatfish species, is the switch from live food to an artificial diet. In a three month study, I was able to wean wild young-of-the year winter flounder from live, cultured Artemia onto dry food. Specific growth rates and food conversion indicated the artificial diet was a better food source than Artemia. I

The process of fermentation has been found to reduce the amount of microbiological contamination in such foods as a result of the production of antimicrobial compounds such as organic acids, peroxides, carbon dioxide and bacterioc

Eating behaviors evolve and change from an exclusive milk diet through a complementary feeding until familiar diet. There are several and complex factors influencing initial responses to the introduction of new foods. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to explore first-time mothers’ experiences of weaning, and to identify the factors influencing their decision-making about weaning.
