Abstract:
An international public debate over the law and ethics of autonomous weapon systems (AWS) has been underway since 2012, with those urging legal regulation of AWS under existing principles and requirements of the international law of armed conflict in argument with opponents who favour, instead, a preemptive international treaty ban on all such weapons. This chapter provides an introduction to this international debate, offering the main arguments on each side. These include disputes over defining an AWS, the morality and law of automated targeting and target selection by machine, and the inter

The central theme of this chapter is concerned with showing how scientists emerged as experts in lethality and the extent to which they could shape the engineering debates that evolved as different technologies for killing were developed. This chapter asks whether it is possible to draw analogies between mundane and sophisticated technology. The previous chapters have explored different dimensions of innovation across multiple contexts. The conclusion drawn here is that future investigations into innovation will also need to consider the range of contexts and actors engaged in more sophisticated socio–technical change if we are to properly understand the distribution of power across the military–industrial complex. Only by making this effort will we be able to expose the countervailing interests that make up the process of weap

There are many ways of thinking about guns. Guns can be seen through the lens of gender or identity, as a matter of personal rights or from the perspective of the engineer interested in design features and standardization. These can be termed ‘singular only’ (mass), e.g. furniture, cutlery; ‘plural mostly’, e.g. vegetables, cosmetics; and ‘countable’, e.g. weapons, vehicles. The chapter begins with a semantic overview, then moves to a selective review of the psycholinguistic and other cognitive science literature on superordinates. It is argued that much of this literature is flawed by the ‘All Superordinates are Taxonomic’ Fallacy. The study then presents semantic temp

In practice, the existence of religious communities is maintained through the succession of new religious leaders, priests, and teachers. Likewise, direct State interference in the appointment procedure of a religion may lead to divisions within communities and may weaken the relationship between different sub-groups. This academic text brings together, in one volume, the most recent and innovative accounts of liability to harm in war. The concept of liability has become a crucial wedge issue within the military ethics community, as the claim that combatants are morally equal has come under withering criticism. Scholars have been exploring the various causal factors that underlie a person’s liability to be intentionally targeted with potentially lethal violence—such as her culpable contribution to an unjust threat. These new categories of liability cut across the old equality of combatants, suggesting that

Security studies in the United States is marred by a lack of status. Opportunities within American universities are limited by the fact that the work deals with war and the use of force. Another reason for the isolation of security studies is its inherent interdisciplinary nature. However, the most serious limitation of security studies is its narrowness. Nearly all of its ranks are international rela
