The Web Information System (WIS) is a new type of Web browser capable of retrieving and displaying the physical attributes (retrieval time, age, size) of a digital document. The WIS also has the ability to dynamically update HTML links, thereby informing the user regarding the status of the information. Current web browsers are ill-prepared to manage execution of scripts embedded in web pages, because they treat all JavaScript code executing in a page as one unit. All code shares the same namespace, same security domain, and shares uncontrolled access to the same heap; some browsers even use the same thread for multiple tabs or windows. This lack of isolation frequently causes problems that range from loss of functionality to security compromises. Abstract:
Today the web browser get a more central role in the arsenal of programs users use and at the same time installing programs is a bit of the past and every type of applications gets a web alternative. Users sees this as a good thing, however software companies which have put a lot of time, effort and money into their products might not be as happy in this platform paradigm shift. The question is though, does it need to be a paradigm shift? Or is it possible to move an old application into this new, Operating System (OS) and architecture agnostic, multi purpose system the web has developed into?
