Topic management is the task of gathering, evaluating, organizing, and sharing a set of web sites for a specific topic. Current web tools do not provide adequate support for this task. We created and continue to develop the TopicShop system to address this need. TopicShop includes (1) a web crawler/analyzer that discovers relevant web sites and builds site profiles, and (2) user interfaces for information workspaces. We conducted an empirical pilot study comparing user performance with TopicShop vs. Yahooï . Results from this study were used to improve the design of TopicShop. A number of

To obtain better precision, I also explore the possibility of tracking gaze position and facial expression, from which I can determine the attractiveness of different parts of a document. Abstract:
The Internet presents a constantly evolving frontier for criminology and policing, especially in relation to online predators – paedophiles operating within the Internet for safer access to children, child pornography and networking opportunities with other online predators. The goals of this qualitative study are to undertake behavioural research – identify personality types and archetypes of online predators and compare and contrast them with behavioural profiles and other psychological research on offline paedophiles and sex offenders. It is also an endeavour to gather intelligence on the t

Abstract:
The MIRI-MRS is a future space based Medium Resolution Spectrometer and one of four instruments to be integrated onto The James Webb Space Telescope. The Medium Resolution Spectrometer is designed to be diffraction limited across its entire passband of 5 - 28.3 microns. It achieves this through the spectral filtering of the passband into four channels with each one containing an integral field unit optimised for minimal diffraction losses. The integral field unit enables the simultaneous measurement of the spectral data across the entire field of view. The design of the Medium Resolution Spect

Abstract:
This thesis deals with intelligent systems for support of the semantic annotation of text. It discusses the motivation for creation of such systems and state of the art in the areas of their usage. The thesis also describes newly proposed and realised annotation system which realizes advanced functions of semantic filtering and presentation of annotation suggestion alternatives in a unique way. The results of finished experiments clearly show the advantages of proposed solution. They also prove that the user interface of the annotation tools affects the annotation process. Abstract:

Abstract:
Collaborative filtering-based recommender systems typically operate on a high-dimensional sparse user-item matrix. Matrix completion is one of the most common formulations where rows and columns represent users and items, and predicting user’s ratings in items corresponds to filling in the missing entries of the matrix. In practice, it is a very challenging task to predict one's interest based on millions of other users having each seen a small subset of thousands of items. We considered how to extract the key features of users and items in the rating matrix to capture their features in a l

Abstract:
The great social and economic impact of earthquakes has made necessary the development of novel structural health monitoring (SHM) solutions for increasing the level of structural safety and assessment. SHM is the process of comparing the current state of a structure’s condition relative to a healthy baseline state to detect the existence, location, and degree of likely damage during or after a damaging input, such as an earthquake. Many SHM algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, a large majority of these algorithms cannot be implemented in real time. Therefore, their result
