This thesis describes WebDoc, an automated system that classifies Web documents according to the Library of Congress classification system. This work is an extension of an early version of the system that successfully generated indexes for journal articles. The unique features of Web documents, as well as how they will affect the design of a classification system, are discussed. We argue that full-text analysis of Web documents is inevitable, and contextual information must be used to assist the classification. The architecture of the WebDoc system is presented. Web archiving is the practice of preserving websites as a historical record. Currently, the field has no single, comprehensive theory that describes what is a high-quality or low-quality archived website. Semantic interoperability is essential on the Semantic Web to enable different information systems to exchange data. Ontology matching has been recognised as a means to achieve semantic interoperability on the Web by identifying similar information in heterogeneous ontologies. Existing ontology matching approaches have two major limitations. The first limitation relates to similarity metrics, which provide a pessimistic value when considering complex objects such as strings and conceptual entities.
