Abstract:
This study set out to establish an informed framework for the use of social network services in South African museums. Social network services are utilised by a wide demographic spectrum so they offer a cost-effective way to engage with communities and with existing and new stakeholders. The Standard of Generally Recognised Accounting Practice on Heritage Assets, or GRAP 103, and the draft National Policy on Digitisation of Heritage Resources imply that museum collections get documented and managed in digital form. It will coincidentally also enable museums to embrace the use of social network services and share the collections in their custody with many South Africans who are yet to experience the value of museums in the country. Museums are institutions in the service of society which acquires, conserves and communicates the tangible and intangible heritage of people and their environment. During the twentieth century museums have had to reinvent themselves from being unapproachable custodians of heritage to being part of society, willing to engage in discourses and be transformed to remain relevant to the communities they serve. The 2011 Census has found that about 18.2 million of 51.7 million South Africans have had access to the Internet before. Active Internet users however, are about half that figure because it is expensive, the broadband and telecommunications network is not efficient or because people have not yet experienced the value it offers. Government regulations compel Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enterprises to spend 1.5% net profit after tax on socio economic development initiatives. This presents an opportunity for museums as educational institutions to engage with such enterprises to expand Internet access and engage with local communities. The social network service field offers various ways to communicate collections and engage with communities through text, photographs, video and location-based technologies. Various notable local and international initiatives were discussed in this study. For example the Kulturpool which allows visitors to create cyber collections from digitised museum objects and contribute to the knowledge of such objects by allowing them to submit and share information for others to read. SAHRIS, the digital database offered by the South African Heritage Resources Agency, holds the key to similar ventures that museums could pursue. The regulative framework involves privacy, copyright and ethical issues which museums should abide by. Because of the pervasiveness of ICTs museums should take note of these regulations even if they decide not to pursue social network initiatives. ICT skills in museums are insufficient and should be improved upon. Social network services offer training and guidelines on how to use them, which could be a great help provided the reader has a good command of the English language. Cognisance must be taken of an overview social network services and their uses, and of the ethical and regulative framework for museums to benefit from using social network services to engage with communities. This way, communities may benefit from having access to the museum online.

Abstract:
In 2012, UNESCO calls for openly licensing the publicly funded educational material. In the context of sustainable development and in the face of the threat posed by the current trend towards the privatization of the production, reproduction and dissemination of knowledge and, in particular, by the Intellectual Property Rights regime, an open and flexible approach to learning is "demanded". This research aims to conduct an evaluative study on the use and management of educational resources in the context of non-formal, digital and open educational resources represented by the websites of museums in Spain. To understand how educational resources are represented in this digital and open context and, more specifically, the use and management that is made of the image as education resource itself; to detect whether this call for openly licensing educational material is having any kind of impact or incidence. In the present study we will present first a theoretical approach, that addresses the state of the question and it will allow us, in a second place, to carry out an evaluative analysis to try to demonstrate the tendency of promotion of the knowledge and the use of open licenses on museum websites. Methodologically, this is an applied research, framed within the interpretative paradigm and with a descriptive scope that supports a mixed analysis of methodological application. This methodology combines quantitative techniques through questionnaires destined to Spanish museums with an educational program and qualitative techniques related to the direct analysis of the websites of the museums, which will allow us to detect their main characteristics and create different functional typologies. This evaluative analysis will allow us to identify: Whether museums favor and enhance the use of open educational resources in the digital and non-formal education environment represented by their websites. In the last stage, it is a matter of promoting the exploitation of the educational potential of museums, in order to get to achieve the strategical opportunity for which UNESCO claims and which would improve the quality of the education for the benefit of all.

Chanopoulou, Magdalini. "Value creation through investments in Web-based systems within not-for-profit organisations : the case of two UK museums." Thesis, City University London, 2008. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8593/.

Abstract:
A large number of not for profit organisations use Web technologies for community building, to improve services offered to their public or to generate income. However, the Internet is not a universal panacea and between the hype and counter-hype on the benefits of Web technologies, it is clear there are limits. Some third sector organisations are failing to make the most ofWeb technologies. Thus, it is important to develop a clear understanding of the process of deriving value from those technologies within a not-forprofit environment. This thesis aims at' understanding the way organisational value can be derived from investments in Web technologies within the museum context. Two in-depth case studies of Web projects' implementation processes and their financial, as well as non financial outcomes within two UK museums are presented. The data presented in this thesis was collected through a variety of methods including semi-structured interviews, observation, document review and an evaluation of the two websites. A theoretical approach that takes into account orga~isational and cultural issues embedded in Web-based systems was used in order to uhderstand better the process of acquiring value from the Web activities of the two museums. Thus, a synthesised conceptual framework based on the 'Mangle of Practice' and the 'Limits to Value' model was used for data collection. While the theoretical framework equipped the researcher with a sound basis upon which data collection was conducted, the framework did not offer much assistance in the task of data analysis. For this purpose, techniques were adapted from grounded theory. The two case studies show that although limited resources and the challenges of dealing with the digital content are very important issues for museums, Web systems planning aligned to the museum strategy and assigning the responsibility for the monitoring of Web related initiatives to a senior manager with a broad view of the organisation, as well as the power to initiate changes can improve the value obtained from those initiatives.

Abstract:
Social networks have shaken up and modified the way of relationship and communication between people and institutions. These relationships have become a new communicational paradigm. The main objective of the thesis is to display how the museums in Catalonia interact and spread their heritage through social networks. The study and analysis have been methodologically developed from a double perspective: quantitative and qualitative, creating parameters and indicators for the webometrics study and tracking observation and data collection on different platforms. The results show a very heterogeneous situation in every way of the museum system of Catalonia with a complex territorial organization. The museum-visitor interaction (face-to-face or virtual) in Catalonia has a significant lack. Some suggestions of reflection and discussion, as a conclusion, attempt to contribute new approaches for a more effective communication between museums and their supporters/visitors.

Technology offers opportunities for museums to expand the ways in which cultural perspectives relevant to objects on display can be exchanged and understood. Multimedia content offered online in an environment with user input capabilities can encourage dialogue and enrich visitor experiences of museums. This action research project using narrative analysis was an effort to develop the use of web technology in museum education practice, with an emphasis on constructivist learning. Concepts including the visitor-centered museum and multiple narratives led the researcher to collaborate with a pre-service art teacher education classroom and a local Hindu community to create content that might better develop understandings of one museum's Hindu sculpture collection that are personal, cultural, and complex.

Abstract:
This research explores the development of a theoretical framework for the design of the web presence and how it can be usefully and practically employed with a view to increasing the number of visitors to cultural organisations such as museums in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The paper adopts a qualitative and quantitative research method approach, including a critical review of relevant literature on web presence (website and social media design) and digital marketing to determine how these online technologies can provide an innovative means of promoting museums online in Saudi Arabia. At present, museums in Saudi Arabia use mainly traditional methods such as printed advertisement, for promotion which have a number of problems and limitations as the new challenge is not only how to reach your audience but also how to engage with them. However, with the adoption of internet technology, Saudi Arabia is quickly entering an information-based age and there is also the need for a shift in paradigm to correct misguided notions that museums are just for children or places for keeping worn-out artefacts. This research describes the development of a new web-presence framework and argues it can provide a number of benefits, namely: wider dissemination of information about museums to visitors; online promotion of museums for the benefit of a wider international audience; promotion of Saudi’s heritage, faith and culture online through social media; improved visitor satisfaction; effective management of visitors by museum workers; and effective payment online before actual visits to museums. The research concludes with a number of recommendations for policy-makers in Saudi Arabia to take full advantage of the internet and social media to effectively promote cultural organisations through their web presence using the framework in order to engage with visitors for greater competitiveness on a global market.

Abstract:
The present study presents the idea of the use of a pedagogical site as a support tool for the Museum of Ex-combatants of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in World War II, located in Caxias do Sul - RS. In order to enhance the museum's pedagogical use, as well as collaborate to increase the visibility of the institution, the page functions as a complement mechanism and interpretation of the physical museum, without the intention of replacing it. The proposal is divided in three stages, the first one being a study about the context in which Brazil was inserted until the beginning of the war, deepening the political actions defined in Vargas' government until Brazil entered the war. This stage also brings to discussion the context in which small squares are inserted in the South of Brazil. The second stage deals with the problematic of memory and its places where these are more "intense", the so-called "places of memory". The third directly addresses the FEB Museum and its structures, both organizational and expository. The course of the museum is divided into eight steps, each of which explains the panels that constitute the chronology of Brazilian participation in the war. In order to construct the site, we used the most diverse sources that can be used to discuss the theme and to clarify the role of the squares in the world conflict. Among these sources were used: films, books, newspapers, periodicals, documents and artifacts that are part of the structure of the museum. The proposal shows the importance of these diverse sources for the teaching of history. The Brazilian is unaware of its history, so it has a fragile memory that changes easily and ends up not having many ties with the past. The study shows the richness of the museum as a place of memory and a tool for teaching history.

The present dissertation explains the results of a qualitative research, social and participant character, focusing on the continuing education of teachers of two establishments of Basic Education, in the use of new information and communication technologies (ICT), more specifically, Web 2.0 tools to assist in the production of virtual museums. For this, was developed the course named "Virtual Museum at the School: organization of collections mediated for Web 2.0 resources," educational product resulting of the readings taken through the literature review. It was defined as a starting point the following questions: The virtual museum can be used in schools as a tool to aid the organization and reading of objects and documents in the online context? How the Basic Education teachers can improve their classes, by way of virtual museum, as well as participate in the discussion of their use? This approach is justified as the possibility of teaching reflection on their practice, searching for alternatives that respect for the collaborative and multidisciplinary work. Therefore, it is considered important to analyze the use of the virtual museum as an educational resource from the various dimensions of human production. So it was offered the course for teachers of different subjects, promoting enriching discussions, valuing different reality views. It was adopted as an epistemological procedure the didactic for a Historical-Critical Pedagogy, so that the teachers of the course were motivated to transform your practice attitude. The results obtained attest to the need for continuing education as proposed in this work, with a view to the character of incompleteness that involves the human being, beyond the traditional conceptions that considered the teacher the center of knowledge historically accumulated. It is expect, therefore, that the research presented here contribute to the discussions involving not only the creation of virtual museums in school, but also the formation of reflective professionals as a way for the transformation of teaching practice.

Abstract:
For thousands of years, physical objects have been used to represent data, in order to support cognition, communication and learning. Such representations, especially newly computer-supported ones, became the focus of an emerging field called data physicalization. Although most physicalizations are passive (i.e., static), a growing number of active (i.e., dynamic) representations have been recently created. There is still, however, an immense opportunity in exploring interactive data physicalizations. This thesis proposes a tangible artifact (a shovel equipped with orientation sensors) that could be used by visitors of Earth sciences museums. SuperTunnel Simulator calculates a hole through Earth, indicating where in the world visitors would end up if they dug in a certain direction. Feedback from participants indicate such embodied interaction might influence learning by igniting visitors’ curiosity and stimulating hypothesis formulation. Finally, we point to research opportunities in conveying data not through an object’s shape, but through our interaction with it.

After verifying a significant gap in the areas of preservation, exhibition, and the history of Portuguese Web design the present study was directed to its resolution. The solution for the problem was found in the design of interfaces of a web-based museum for Portuguese Web design from a design perspective. But for that it was first necessary to build a historical framework of the Web and Web design in Portugal. After the study conducted, it was concluded that in the construction of the museum collection is not enough to preserve the digital artefact per se, but that the design practice must be preserved, highlighting the role of the designer in the making of the collection. In collaboration with the curator in the role of mediator, together they build the collection. At the same time must be preserved the "anatomy of use" of the interactive artefacts, including for that the participation of the museum visitor in order to create a comprehensive and representative cultural heritage. A museum based in Web 2.0 has specific characteristics that come from the environment, and which are projected in the proposed museological strategies. Considering the research hypotheses and the methodological approach, we developed a front-end view of the service of the museum, an initial proposal to initiate a future museum of the Portuguese Web design.

Abstract:

In the case of museums the need to diversify the existing supply is becoming clear due to the visitors’ increasing demand of tools for interpretation and interaction with the heritage. The purpose of museums in regard to integration of ICT can vary, influenced by the size of museums, the kind of technology used, as well as the use of ICT by visitors.. This research focuses on the use of the ICT made by the museums in Andorra, willing to analyze the adaptation to new technologies and the role played by ICT resources to find out which would be the main benefits resulting from the introduction of technologies in museums. The research focuses on the following specific goals: (1) identification of determing factors in the implementation of an ICT project in a museum; (2) analysis of museums in Andorra; (3) diagnose the ICT implementation degree of museums in Andorra and (4) determine the digital strategy at the andorran museums. We propose a qualitative methodology using tools such as questionnaires. The results will allow us to conclude how museum managers apply their knowledge of museums’ discipline in incorporating ICT and see how far and in which way museums can use the incorporation of ICT to improve strategic planning in museums.

Abstract:
Evaluation of museum audiences both in their physical and web-based spaces is a necessary component of museum education. For smaller museums without the personnel or knowledge to create a website and evaluate the on-line audience, using a web-based learning tool may be able to help these museums properly maintain an online site. A web-based Elm Fork Natural Heritage Museum (WBEFNHM) was created during the 2008 fall semester at the University of North Texas. The site included photographs and information from specimens housed within the physical Elm Fork Natural Heritage Museum. The site was available to three non-science majors' biology laboratory courses, and three science majors' biology laboratory courses during the 2009 spring and fall semesters. Student use of the WBEFNHM was tracked and found no significant difference between the amount of time science majors and non-majors spent on the site. This evaluation helps in understanding future use of an online EFNHM.

Abstract:
Organizational communication, an essential component within organizations, whose paradigmatic change has led to experiencing the formation of a new system, that is networked, multimodal, multimedia and interactive, becoming central to those organizations in this historic course. This system has as its basis the Web, which turned into an important and strategic means of information and communication for the contemporary organization. Within this context the museum, by also conceiving communication as an essential component, revised its traditional functions and enriched them with its introduction to be closer to society and be valued by it. In this manner, the contemporary museum, besides acquiring, conserving, researching and exhibiting human heritage, also started to communicate this symbolic representation of culture, being considered not only a public service institution, but also a communication means and location. Based on this –and its interests to expand the democratization of culture and knowledge, interact with its public, reach greater social projection and, equally, to adapt to social changes-, the museum for the information society added to this conception, among other ICTs, the Web as an information and communication resource. Thus in the websites of this system, the museum makes available contents on its collection, services and activities, and uses institutional communication practices adjusted to, created for and mediated by this web system, to broadcast what they are doing for their public and interact with them. Based on what was presented and in the interest of deepening knowledge on the phenomena of institutional communication undertaken by museums on the Web, this paper has, as a general objective, to analyze the institutional communication practices present on museum websites. As in Brazil the social and cultural relevance of these institutions is growing and the touristic volume internal and external to be hosted by the country in 2014 and 2016 is an important occasion to increase the number of visitors to them, as objects of this study were chosen museums that are part of the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM). The choice of this federal autarchy as case study is due to its being responsible for the organization, management and development of the museum sector in Brazil, as well as coordinating the actions of the National Policy for Museums. The results of this exploratory and quantitative-qualitative study demonstrate that, of the thirty museums of IBRAM, only eleven have websites, and that within those these institutions used various practices of the institutional modality of organizational communication, mostly mediated by and adjusted to this web system and heterogeneous and fundamentally informative content, shaped dynamically and statically by said system, to fulfill their information and communication objectives. Despite the use of this system by the museums of IBRAM still being small, it reflects the recognition that institutional communication on the Web as a strategic complementary communicative activity to that carried out live and enhancing the disseminator role and the expository and didactic character of museums, thus complementing, in a significant manner, the logic of its existence.

The Internet has been growing in importance both to individuals and to organizations. For the companies, a website on the Internet represents a possibility of new business, and for the not-forprofit organizations it represents greater amplitude to its social actions. The cultural sector, that normally is also not-for-profit, is using this channel to services, communication and to spread the public access to its cultural actions, according to its mission. This work analyses the implementation of art museums websites as a question of management of culture. Some aspects are considered, like virtualization of museums, visitor experience, works of art aura, services, and communication. The necessaries conditions and functions to be accomplished by the website are also verified. In order to better understand these topics, some selected art museums websites are analyzed on its functionalities, usability, and mission adherence. As a conclusion, the work makes some considerations about the future of websites towards interactivity and how easy it is to use the website to maximize funding opportunities

This study examines the experience of blind people in science and art museums. It is important for two reasons. First, museums have the potential to become hotbeds for the development of inclusive technology and practices. Second, improving the experience for a small section of society with special needs, blind visitors in this case, can lead to a better experience for everyone. In the current landscape, museums are already on this path consciously or unconsciously. At this juncture, the right decisions could lead to a better and more inclusive future for everyone. As a first step in this direction, this thesis describes the use of the human centered design process to identify opportunity areas that can improve the experience universally. The three key areas were identified through extensive primary and secondary research involving interviews with key stakeholders and user observation. Major opportunities lie in the areas of Navigation, Multimodal experiences and Social Inclusion. These areas not only represent challenges faced by blind visitors, but also key improvement areas for all visitors. For example, navigation is important for all visitors, but more so for blind visitors because it represents independence. Current layouts of museums force otherwise completely independent visitors to depend on external help. Improvements in any of these areas is very likely to improve the overall experience of museums, while including an often overlooked segment of the population.

Abstract:

The present text discusses how museums work technically with the continuous increase of the digital cultural objects present in the museological institutions and that also become part of its cultural patrimony. The objective is to demonstrate that the collaborative environment of the Web Network of Museums of the State of Rio de Janeiro can stimulate the offer of integrated information services with the other cultural institutions through the digital curation of this material, encouraging the sharing and reuse of these cultural digital collections. The methodology of this research is developed in three stages: literature review, identification of ongoing experiments in digital curation and reuse of digital objects and oral interviews. It was possible to confirm the digital curatorship as a resource for the control and maintenance of the technical treatment of cultural digital objects, reusing them for the expansion of knowledge and dissemination of information and at the end, some of the new services that could be offered by the Web Network of Museums.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of pottery in the museum world. Throughout the study, questions along the lines of how, why and what we exhibit are brought up and answered. The study is done through observations and interviews with seven different museums, four of which are located in Sweden and three in Italy. The author has also used museological literature and theories in order to strengthen the essay and show that the issues brought up in the observations are known since before in the field, but still exist in the museums today. The exhibiting of pottery comes with several issues, such as overcrowding of displays, requirements of pre-knowledge from the visitors, aesthetical problems with broken, coarse or fine pottery and epistemological prob-lems. Epistemology is a subject that seems to be partly ignored in the observed museums, despite it being general knowledge that fewer visitors will read the text the longer it is. Other epistemological problems that are brought up are the issues of text placement, vocabulary and actual mediated information. These problems are brought up throughout the essay and explained, with a smaller section that discusses possible improvements to them, which have been brought up by researchers in the field. In interviews with curators of the museums, thoughts about what the visitors see and understand compared to what the museums want them the see are presented. Also their views on the possibilities of interaction with pottery as a mediator and whether they focus primarily on aesthetics or learning in the exhibitions are shown. This essay is not meant to be a decider between what is right or wrong concerning the exhibiting of pottery, but could be used as a stepping-stone towards such studies. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It has been established by several studies that interactive exhibitions in museums bring many benefits to the experience of its visitors. This thesis explores how to make the exhibition Människor och idéer i rörelse (People and Ideas in Motion) interactive. This exhibition took place at the Workroom of Rörelsernas Museum (Museum of Movements) in Malmö. The exhibition was designed so that no one needed to go inside, but rather view and interact with the content of the exhibition from the street, which was displayed on the windows of the Workroom.Through a context-based design approach, the design process consisted of three main phases: inspiration, ideation and implementation. Throughout the design process, it was defined that in order to maintain the distance measures needed, it was adamant to employ technology as a design material. Following a number of testings, the specific technologies that were to be used were defined, namely capacitive sensors. Following this, the project delves into the steps needed in order to define the output of sensors. The final product consisted of four sensors. Two of these were connected to surprise boxes that enhanced the visual content of the exhibition. The other two were connected to a sound system that employed the windows as speakers, providing extra information about the museum and the exhibition.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Small museums occupy a distinctive niche in the world of museums. They hold unique objects in their collections, exhibit them, and educate the public about them. All museums have the challenge to care for collections in a manner that will enhance their preservation for future generations. Large museums have paid staff and budgets for collections care. Small museums, as used in this study, have one full-time staff person or less, who are often inadequately trained in caring for collections. Nevertheless, they still must work to preserve their collections for the future. In this qualitative study, the grounded theory method was used to identify and recommend quality collections care practices in small Utah museums for developing training programs in collections care. There are small museums that practice aspects of quality collections care. These museums were identified using survey forms and Performance Goals records in the Utah Office of Museum Services. Seventeen staff and employees from 15 small museums were interviewed. The data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis to categorize the comments. Themes emerged in response to two research questions: 'What are quality collections care practices in Utah' and 'How are staff and volunteers of small museums in Utah trained in quality collections care practices?' Themes from the collections care aspect centered on knowing what you have and caring for what you have. These included use of the PastPerfect Software Program; timely processing of museum objects; and following the museum's mission, security, housekeeping, and preventative conservation. Themes from the training aspect centered on training efforts within the museum, and training received, learned, or gained through efforts outside the museum. These included the Internet for training, sharing information, workshops and conferences, and mentors and networks. Application of the themes to collections care was discussed, including suggestions for implementation. This was followed by a discussion of the role of small museums, volunteers in small museums, state museum organizations, quality collections care practices, and training for collections care. Finally, an alarm was sounded for some serious issues confronting small museums in Utah, ending with recommendations for further study.

Popularization of Science is responsible for the role of transmiting information and scientific and/or technological knowledge in an adequate language aimed to a public which technical and specialized terms are not familiar. In this scenario, it is imperious the need of studying in which ways it has got materialized, in which means and, moreover, discover if the scientific disclosure was made aimed to involve somehow the expected public, in other words, if it allows the interactivity. This work analyzes the presence of interactivity areas in three initiatives that produce popularization of Science in websites, that are: the blogs network ScienceBlogs Brazil, the web portal Canal Ciência and the site of Museu da Vida. To achieve the objectives, a qualitative methodology was used, that evaluated the pages by a “Analysis Model of Popularization of Science and Technology” that observed, more than the technical and content aspects, the presence in social media, the approach of the public communication model of Science that was submitted, and primarily, the existence of areas focused in interactivity. By using the method and its investigation into the pages of the analyzed initiatives, it is concluded that these pages are concerned more with the literacy of its users, following strictly by a Deficit Model, than with the construction of a interactive scientific culture.

Abstract:
The Mental Health Memories project is an online archive created in order to display and preserve the personal histories of those with mental health experiences. The project aims to fill a void in available material culture related to the history of mental health and its preservation. Participants’ contributions include: oral histories, personal items, documents, and audio. Bringing together multimedia sources, the MHMemories website allows for the preservation of these items and stories through the digitization of contributions. This method allows for participants’ items to stay in their possession while also becoming part of the archive. In order to recruit participants, the Mental Health Memories project teamed up with the Psychiatric Stories Archive, based at California State University San Bernardino, and the San Bernardino County Behavioral Health Clubhouse. Three collection days facilitated the gathering of materials. The final product is the MHMemories.org/.com website which showcases the contributions of participants. The Mental Health Memories project helps to illustrate the diversity of mental health experiences.

Abstract:
The evolution of the Internet, and especially the Web, has originated significant changes in how individuals communicate, leading up to that Web 2.0 has changed the gravitational point of online communication, making the emphasis shifts to access to people and not just access to information. Social media allow individuals to communicate and interact in new and collaborative ways, definitely changing the way they relate and, as, in part, this study intends to demonstrate, cultural institutions and museums are not indifferent to this change in communication paradigm. The requirements and changes in contemporary society, closely linked to information technology and communication, have raised new questions to museums making them face new challenges of transforming its social nature, eminently enhancing their communication through the use of the tools Web 2.0 and social media. Social media allow an evolving role of the museum, from an information provider to an enabler of knowledge, giving visitors the opportunity to participate and explore, in a dynamic and active way, creating the basis for the design of new perspectives and views about the museum and the museum object. Social media offers new forms of collaboration with the public and, thus, allow the museum to better know their audience, fitting in the management and curatorship, with the contribution of these new ideas and visions. However, the challenge for the museum sector, of the use of these tools based on appropriate communication strategies, represents a task that proves sometimes complicated by the lack of guidance for implementation and measurement of results in social media. This work focuses on a study to draft a set of guidelines that guides the design of communication strategies of the museum, through social media. To this end, we study the relationship between museums and social media, both nationally and internationally, recognizing the kind of use of social media and featuring what type of content and what the tools were used. In this study, interviews and other observations, we identified projects pioneered the use of blogs, wikis, YouTube, social networks, etc., and develop, in detail, best practice guidelines on the use of social media as a communication tool. Part of this study was the practical application of these guidelines to a museum, with the application, measurement of results and adjustments to the model developed. Social media supports the museum to fulfill its role and social function, bringing it closer to the public, increasingly diverse and heterogeneous, making the online as an essential form of communication museum.

Abstract:
This theoretical dissertation is a comparative assessment of two exhibitions responding to a museum archive: the work of African-American artist Fred Wilson (b. 1954), Mining the Museum, at the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, 1993, and my own exhibition We Bury Our Own at the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford, 2012. I explore the emergence of the museum as a context and medium for artists as institutional critique. The following research outlines a range of artistic practices and engages a process of ekphrasis to give detailed comprehensive accounts of both exhibitions, demonstrating how studio-based research is able to reveal hidden or previously unseen histories obscured by the imperial gaze. I discuss the differences between my own and Wilson's approaches in order to expose how the work might shift in significance or meaning when it is placed inside and outside the museum context. This thesis introduces the idea of spiritual repatriation, outlines how museum collections are able to contribute to artistic practice and how artists can contribute to the ongoing exhibition, critique and appreciation of museum collections. This thesis also elaborates on the Pitt Rivers Museum Collection and its subsequent influence on recent work, and redefines the title We Bury Our Own as a metaphor applied to a wider picture.

Abstract:
What were Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton’s contributions to the progressive education movement and the Indian arts and crafts movement in the Southwestern United States at a time when the region was still very remote? Artist, author, amateur ethnographer, educator, and curator; these were but a few of the talents of Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton, co-founder of the Museum of Northern Arizona and early art advocate on the Colorado Plateau. This study investigates how Colton contributed to the progressive education movement and the Indian arts and crafts movement through the work that she did at the museum. There, she labored to increase public awareness of the importance of art education and to revive Native American arts on the Colorado Plateau. Using an extensive collection of archival material in the Colton Collection at the Museum of Northern Arizona, as well as oral history interviews, this historical study provides a nuanced analysis of Colton’s life as an educator. Colton’s influence is not well known today, but her professional contributions merit recognition, giving her a place in the history of American education. This study reveals how Colton’s efforts fit within the context of the work of her contemporaries in Santa Fe and Taos, and within the progressive education movement, from the then relatively remote outpost of Flagstaff. Much can be learned from Colton’s work that is relevant to the field of education today. Her ideals and writings about art education will resonate with opponents of No Child Left Behind. Colton’s work as one of northern Arizona’s earliest art educators contributed to a better understanding of the culture of the various peoples of the Colorado Plateau and to the preservation of Navajo and Hopi traditions through education. Colton made notable contributions to the Indian arts and crafts movement, museum education, and the progressive education movement. A woman of firm convictions and ideals, Colton was strong-willed, and complex, a multi-faceted person with a broad range of interests which she pursued with passion and commitment. This study crosses the boundaries of several disciplines, including educational history, museum studies, women’s studies, educational biography, Native American studies, and art education.
