Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to statistically explore the relationship between web usability and web presence of the universities. As a case study, five Turkish universities in different rankings which were selected from Webometrics rankings were evaluated and compared. Design/methodology/approach – Two different methods were employed for performing usability evaluation of the selected universities: a user testing was used to measure the user performance on the selected tasks and a questionnaire to assess the user satisfaction on the website use. Both usability evaluation methods were applied on the pre-determined tasks for each university by participation of 20 subjects. After the usability evaluation, the universities were ranked in terms of usability results and finally, the relationship between web usability and web presence of universities was statistically investigated by using Kendall’s rank correlation. Findings – Several common usability problems which were asserted by related previous studies were identified at the end of usability evaluation of university websites. The usability results also revealed that selected Turkish university websites suffer from numerous usability problems. Further, a strong positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the usability of the university websites and their web presences were identified. Hence, the participants showed a higher success and satisfaction while performing the tasks on the university websites which have strong web presences. Practical implications – The findings from this study have practical implications for universities. Correlation results showed that universities can improve their web usability by giving importance to their web presence volumes. Universities can estimate their web usability levels by investigating their web presence rankings and they can also raise their rankings in Webometrics ranking system by improving the usability of their websites. Moreover, university web developers can design more usable and more user-friendly websites by avoiding usability and design problems identified through usability evaluation. Originality/value – Different from the prior research efforts focussing on usability of educational web pages, this study contributes to the growing literature by statistically exploring the relationship between web presence and web usability of universities. This study is also precious from the point of view that it is one of the first attempts to evaluate and compare usability levels of a set of universities’ websites from Turkey.

Abstract:
Usability has been an essential component of the Web User Experience (UX) and a focal research topic. In recent years, the penetration of interactive technologies in all aspects of everyday life challenges the way UX is understood and designed. The past decade, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) scholars have been continuously attempting to introduce and explore new and non-traditional factors in the UX arena, such as aesthetics, emotions, affect, and trust. This study contributes to the field by exploring the relationship between aesthetics and UX; specifically the impact of the classical design element of white space on the perceived attractiveness and perceived usability of an e-commerce website. A between-subject research design involves the manipulation a website’s white space. Three different versions were constructed using 25, 50 and 75% of the white space, respectively. Findings offer support for the relationship between aesthetics and the perceived usability of a website. The study results suggest that the usability of a website is impacted negatively when white space increases over 50%. Practitioners should consider that in the context of eCommerce Web design, reduction of content and shrinking of visual elements, in favor of white space, is likely to negatively impact the usability of a website.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the task of organizing the usability testing of web applications that are in pilot or industrial operation. A usability testing technique is described that combines the development, debugging and execution of test scenarios, and analysis of the received test data. The development of test scenarios is based: on the use of the accumulated experience of users who have already worked with this application or with another, similar in functionality; on the use of web analytics, which can provide scenarios of the behavior of user data on the site; and on the use of statistical data on visits to specific pages. Simultaneously with this approach, a different approach is used in the construction of tests. It is based on the development of tests aimed at identifying defects in the program. Debugging and execution of test tasks is carried out in the same way as it is realized when performing functional testing of web applications using testing automation tools. In addition, the analysis of the data obtained during the operation using web analytics makes it possible to form a group of respondent testers, whose capabilities reflect the capabilities of the entire set of probable users of this web application. The approaches outlined in the work were put into practice. As an example, the article provides test data for the page of the admissions committee of MIREA – Russian Technological University – priem.mirea.ru. The obtained experimental data showed that, despite testing the usability of software at the development stages, some errors in the operation of web applications remain undetected. The cost of detecting and eliminating these errors increases significantly. Therefore, it is recommended in the work to increase the level of usability already in the early stages of development. In particular, for the operational prediction of the level of usability, it is desirable to have mathematical tools for modeling the behavior of the designed system and the user.

Web usability is the ease of use of a website. Some goals of usability are the presentation of information and choices in a clear and concise way, a lack of ambiguity and the placement of important items in appropriate areas. On the other hand, user experience is something more than usability. It includes each and every experience that the users have while using the service. And of course, usability rules affect the user experience. In this study, understanding the principles of user-centered design and how it improves user experience is the main purpose. For this aim, https://www.virginamerica.com, which is the web site that gained the two thousand sixteen Best User Experince award from The Webby Awards, has been studied as a case study.

Abstract:
This paper presents the Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) approach for usability testing of a web-site based on ISO 9241-11 usability guidance to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. Usability testing is a technique used to evaluate a product by testing it on users. A particular type of website i.e. university web site was chosen and segmented in different components in modular forms according to the purpose of that component. Then component wise tasks as per ISO 9241-11 usability guidance were prepared to carry out the usability testing for evaluating the test web-site. After analyzing the results of component based usability testing, a proto-type version of the test web-site was designed in a limited form including all the feedback of test results. Finally, the proto-type web-site was re-evaluated for establishing the effectiveness of component based web usability method with the same tasks. The proposed component based usability testing method is expected to improve the design/content issues of web-site resulting the web-site much more user friendly, effective and less time and cost consuming.

Abstract:
Abstract. With the evolution of technology, maps have changed how they are produced and consumed. In the 1990s, along with the internet uprise, printed and digital maps began to be shared and viewed on the web, which provided more significant user interaction with the map and geographic data. However, the ease of creating interactive maps using computational resources sometimes neglects cartographic concepts, impairing the interpretation of geographic data and the quality of the interaction between user and system. This work presents ten specific Usability Heuristics for Interactive Web Maps to identify and elaborate a set of criteria that help create and evaluate the quality of interactive web maps. For this, we used a methodology to develop domain-specific Usability Heuristics, composed of eight steps. This paper presents the ten heuristics elaborated along with the attributes of the name, ID, category and definition, and an additional checklist. This new set encompasses both the concepts of cartography and usability, contributing to better user interaction with the system and geographic data.

Abstract:
User-based satisfaction questionnaires have so far been little used in the evaluation of web sites. A 60-item questionnaire was developed following a factor model used with success for conventional software evaluation. This questionnaire was shown to have high reliabilities and a large database of expected values was gathered for it. It was employed in a study evaluating chamber of commerce web sites in two European cities, together with metrics which measured aspects of user performance and heuristic analysis. It was shown that the questionnaire results agreed with and amplified the other data. The results indicate that questionnaire data can be both reliable and valid for the assessment of user satisfaction with web sites. Some future directions for research are discussed.

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) enable dynamic integration of Web Services (WS) to accomplish a user's need. As such, they are sensitive to user errors. This article presents a framework for mitigating the risks of user errors due to changes in the service delivery context. The underlying methodology incorporates usability in the design, testing, deployment and operation of dynamic collaborative WS, so that the error-prone elements of the User Interface (UI) are identified and eliminated. The methodology incorporates Statistical Process Control (SPC) of Web Service Indices (WSI), obtained by a Decision Support system for User Interface Design (DSUID), in which the users are elements of the control loop.

Abstract:

Abstract:
nformation and interaction in an information media is very important in delivering information to users. This information will be well received if there is continuous interaction, and it becomes an indicator of the quality of the information media. The research was conducted aimed at testing information media in the form of websites, especially the STMIK Sumedang website and evaluating the quality of the STMIK Sumedang web from user responses in the form of usability, information quality and interaction quality. This research uses WebQual 4.0 which is compiled based on three qualities, namely ease of use (usability), information quality (information quality) and quality of interaction (interaction quality). The results of this study are that the STMIK website is good enough but there are still procedures in the web menu that are not working. From this study it can be concluded the most influential in the quality of the web is the usability variable can be seen from the following results Y = - 7.174 + 0.479 X1 + 0.182 X2 + 0.060 X3, X1 = usabiliti, X2 = quality of information, X3 = quality of interaction.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of the research was to compare web site designs used by the fastest growing companies in the USA to the largest companies in the USA and to benchmark those designs against best practices as defined by a leading consultant in the industry.Design/methodology/approachThis approach surveyed the web site designs by each group of companies against a set of best practices and developed summary data about the observations.FindingsThe largest companies in the USA used designs that are more consistent with the best practices as defined by a leading consultant in the industry.Research limitations/implicationsThe fastest growing companies did not use best practices in their web site design and still maintained very rapid growth as evidenced by their national rankings. A poorly executed design was less of a detractor to the company's success than anticipated. Web site design may have a role (positive or negative) in the company's growth rate but further research is required to understand the scope and nature of the role.Practical implicationsThe reason why a company maintains a rapid growth rate may be dependent on numerous factors and as such, a comprehensive evaluation of why a company sustains a rapid growth rate should be undertaken. The role of the web site in the company's success should be evaluated in more depth.Originality/valueThis paper has value for web site designers, entrepreneurs, IT management, IT consultants, and large company personnel involved with web site design.

Abstract:
Web is considered one of the greatest developments of twentieth century. It provides a diverse range of applications and therefore needs different usability designs. Web usability has become a vital aspect for the success of web applications. Web usability is about fulfilling the goals and expectations of users and making their stay on the website pleasant. Web usability design includes three aspects: User Research, Web Design and Web Evaluation [1]. Today, the web design is moving from technology to users i.e. it is more user-centered than ever before. Web design must directly face users with the specific needs, and must ensure that users are pleasant to successfully complete tasks with it. [1]. In this study, we have studied the factors which affect the web readability in this part of the world. We conducted the survey in order to check how different factors play their part for the people who speak languages which are written right to left

Abstract:
Purpose – Issues related to usability and creating effective and engaging user experiences on the internet continue to vex libraries and information agencies. Many organizations still do not have an on-going, sustainable usability assessment program in place. This should be a cause for concern because usability programs serve as a quality-control check on our ability to provide quality information. This is why evidence-based information practice is so important as a fundamental building block of a usability assessment plan. This paper aims to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Through a review of the basic principles of evidence-based practice, the author puts into context how a web assessment methodology could be put in place at a library or information organization. Findings – Using the principles of evidence-based practice, as well as a user-centered design perspective, can greatly enhance the ability of libraries and information organizations to develop effective web usability assessment programs. Originality/value – While there has been a significant body of work in library and information science related to implementing evidence-based practice (EBP), there has been little specifically written about applying EBP to web usability assessment. This article fills that gap in the literature.

Abstract:
Usability is one factor that influences software design success during the software testing process. Usability testing is used to evaluate whether the software meets user needs or not. Usability testing is usually carried out using a certain questionnaire method, but the distribution and measurement of the results are carried out separately. This makes the researchers spend more time testing the application. Therefore, this study provides a solution by designing and building web-based applications to measure the usability of a software design or product with the SUS, UMUX, and UMUX-lite questionnaires. The development method used in this study is Rapid Application Development (RAD) with the stages of the process starting with problem identification, literature study, needs planning, RAD design workshops, implementation, and report writing. The application was built using the Laravel framework and the database using MySQL. The main features of the online questionnaire application were the creation of a questionnaire and the analysis of the results of the questionnaire. The functionality of the application was tested by using the Black Box testing method. Then the developed application was also utilized in usability testing using the SUS, UMUX, and UMUX-lite questionnaires. The results of application usability testing using the SUS, UMUX, and UMUX-Lite methods obtained a final score of 88; 91,28, and 82,05 where all these values mean the application can be accepted and used. Keywords: Usability Testing, Rapid Application Development, SUS, UMUX, UMUX-Lite
