Bibliography: leaves 119-143. The work described in this thesis was designed to investigate one component of the plant's defence against pathogen attack, namely the production of PR-5 proteins... Several roles have been proposed for PR-5 proteins including adaption of plant cells to osmotic stress, antifreeze activity, polysaccharide hydrolase activity, fungal plasma membrane pore forming activity, and a-amylase/trypsin inhibition. The experiments that are described in the thesis were aimed at defining the function of barley PR-5 proteins.(abstract)

Abstract:

This study examines the social organization of Gaiscíoch, a large online gaming community that exists within the simulated world of a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). It provides an ethnographic account of an online gaming community that is open to any player without skill or time commitment requirements, but still maintains high status within the game world. This project identifies eight elements that make this inclusive, friendly, and casual community successful in virtual worlds that tend to be dominated by communities that have a competitive, strict, and exclusive approach to online gaming (social interaction, code of values, leadership, rank system, events, community building, population size, gameplay). Lastly, this project briefly inquires about the nature of the border between the virtual and the physical and establishes that gamers can be considered pseudo-border-inhabitants that are in control of the community they place adjacent to them in the cyber world.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 173-184. This study aimed to broaden understanding of breeding systems in Australian Proteaceae and to study the optimum requirements for promotion of seed germination in two lesser researched genera with horticultural potential, Dryandra quercifolia and Dryandra formosa. The timing and pattern of stigma receptivity was determined using a combination of techniques. Findings can be used to breed and improve these species for further commercialisation in cut flower and garden industries. The study of pistil structure further identified the potential of this structure to affect the capacity of a proteaceous flower to be fertilised. Aspects such as the morphology and size of the stigmatic cavity and the quantity of transmitting tissue in the style were highlighted as filters to pollen tube passage. Comparative studies with other angiosperm species confirmed the unusual structure of the pistil of the proteaceous flower. Seed germination was found to be promoted by exposure of seeds to controlled temperatures of 15°C.

Abstract:
Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic disorder in many cases. The illness can impact on the whole family. Family interventions are a psychosocial treatment for schizophrenia. A robust evidence base has developed supporting the use of family interventions, as reduced relapse and other clinical benefits can be produced. The majority of service users in forensic services suffer from schizophrenia. Yet little is known about the need, acceptability or feasibility of family intervention in forensic services. The over-arching goal of this programme of research was to review the literature for family intervention and conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, with a final aim to resolve the barriers of implementation of family intervention within forensic services. Meta-analysis indicated that the efficacy of family interventions resulted in positive outcomes in reduced relapse and psychotic symptoms, and improved knowledge and relationships. Family interventions were found to be applicable to the psychological needs of forensic service users. Problems were identified with staff training and supervision on forensic wards, with few wards providing family intervention as part of treatment for schizophrenia. Relatives of forensic service users expressed a need for family intervention. Staff highlighted that the barriers to family intervention were associated with insufficient time, poor support, lack of training, deficient information sharing, and geographic limitations between family homes and the forensic units. Staff offered solutions to implementing family intervention that related to revised policy and improved supervision. Relatives and staff held positive attitudes toward family intervention with open-minded attitudes towards the use of a web camera to facilitate family intervention in forensic services (e-FFI). The fourteen week web based family intervention (e-FFI) feasibility study generated reduced levels of stress, stigma and expressed emotion with improvements in the family’s knowledge of schizophrenia, personal health and an acceptance of forensic services. E-FFI was administered with ease achieving positive feedback from the family and the forensic service.

Hartman, Jonathan B. "Hierarchical influence of personal values and innovativeness on adolescent Web consumption." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280610.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides a better understanding of both adolescent Web-use and the factors that influence teen Web-consumption. To this end, a hierarchical, cognitive-behavioral decision-making model of personal values → innovativeness → Web-consumption was proposed and tested. More specifically, Web-consumption behavior was thought to dichotomize into hedonic and utilitarian domains. Two hundred high school students from a Southwestern state, representing various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, anonymously completed surveys. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses identified three latent factors of personal values (personal-self, ambition, power); four factors of innovativeness (vicarious-pensive, vicarious-future, adoptive, use); and two factors of global Web-consumption (hedonic, utilitarian). The global Web-consumption scales were cross-validated against specific Web-consumption behaviors. Global utilitarian behaviors were practical and obligatory, while global hedonic behaviors were experiential and discretionary. Specific hedonic Web-consumption included escape from reality, use with friends, and music activities, while specific utilitarian Web-activities included use for future planning, doing homework, and, coaching parental Web-searches. The two-stage structural equation model analysis with nested comparisons confirmed the hierarchical flow of the relationships. Results indicated that innovativeness served as a middle-level variable, and mediated between the Web-consumption behaviors of teens and their personal values. Each personal value factor displayed unique predictive power on unique factors of innovativeness, which, in turn, displayed unique paths to each Web-consumption factor. For instance, the "ambition" value predicted "vicarious-future" innovativeness which, in turn, predicted both "utilitarian" and "hedonic" Web-consumption. Also, the "personal self" value linked to "vicarious-pensive" innovativeness, which, in turn, predicted "hedonic" Web-consumption. The findings suggest that teens are intrinsically motivated to use the Web and benefit from computer use, even if the use is hedonic in nature. However, parents and educators may choose to monitor adolescent Web-consumption more closely. The paradox of technology can create cognitive dissonance, and teens report regular visits to sites that their parents would not approve of. The study has theoretical and practical import. New measures, and a confirmed a priori hierarchical structure, will be useful tools to researchers of consumer behavior. Professionals are advised to consider applications that would benefit adolescents, including structured after-school activities and curriculum that further integrates the Web and the classroom.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 233-306. A study of the phenomenon of somatization as it occurs in the primary care setting. The phenomenon was studied in terms of aspects of illness behaviour and risk of psychiatric morbidity. It is suggested that abnormal illness behaviour in the form of somatization may be an important factor in the non-recognition of mild non-psychotic psychiatric illness in the primary care setting. The results of the study indicate that an assessment of the patients' attitudes and beliefs about symptoms, and an exploration of psychosocial issues, may lead to a better understanding of why the patients have sought help, and may lead to early identification and appropriate treatment of somatizing behaviour and the psychiatric morbidity underlying such behaviour.
