Abstract:
Some experiments have indicated the possible existence of par ticles with a negative inertial mass. It is shown under which condit ions Weber’s electrodynamics gives rise to this effect. Some specific experiments related to this aspect of Weber’s law are described. Two particles equ ally electrified with charges of the same sign would then move toward one an other if they had negative effective inertial masses. A new concept for nuclear fusion is presented based on the possibility of creating a negative effective inertial mass for ions. It is then considered some properties of the inertial dipole, that is, a system composed by a pair of particles in which one particle has a positive effective inertial mass while the other particle has a negative effective inertial mass. The possible utilization of the inertialdipole as a propulsion system is briefly discussed.

Abstract:
We consider two models which lead to the prediction of a weight change of gyroscopes depending on the rate of rotation: mass-energy equivalence and Weber's force for gravitation. We calculate the order of magnitude of this effect in both models and show that Weber's model predicts a weight change depending on the spin axis orientation resembling close similarities to observed Earth flyby anomalies. however, our predicted effect is much smaller than the observed effect, which could explain why flyby anomalies were not detected anymore in recent spracecraft trajectories.

Kahne, Bruno. "In search of Max Weber's new prophets." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/72393.

Abstract:
One hundred years ago, Max Weber postulated in his seminal work The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism that after a tremendous development, capitalism would either reach a dead end, or would enter a new era of development through the guidance of new prophets (Weber, [1904] 2003:182). The tremendous development foreseen has occurred but have Weber’s new prophets appeared? Through a close analysis of the context in which the word prophet is found in the Bible and through the description that Weber gave to the concept of prophet in The Sociology of Religion (Weber, 1963) a prophet’s ideal type was constructed with fourteen specific characteristics. This ideal type was then used as a grid of analysis to put to the test the nineteen most renowned leadership gurus, potential candidate to the title of prophet.

Schindley, Wanda Beatrice Higbee. "Work in the calling in Max Weber's Protestant ethic thesis." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2668/.

Abstract:
Objectives. Scholars have debated Max Weber's theory of the relationship between religion and capitalism for almost 100 years. Still, the debate is clouded by confusion over Weber's claims about religious doctrine and over the supporting evidence. The purpose of this study is to clarify Max Weber's claims regarding the concept of the calling and the related "anti-mammon" injunction and concept of "good works" and substantiate with historical evidence the religious doctrine Weber describes. Methods. Comparative analysis of early Protestant Lutheran and Calvinist documents from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was used to flesh out a history of ideas to determine whether evidence exists to support Weber's claims related to religious doctrine. Results. Historical analyses revealed that the concept of the calling pre-dated Luther in the Bible. Luther's innovation was not in his use of the word beruf but in his application of the concept of the calling to the common people and his teaching of that idea. The idea of sanctified work was key in both Lutheran and Calvinist documents. There was an increased emphasis on work and encouragement to accumulate wealth in Calvinist documents. Conclusion. Weber's etymological evidence surrounding Martin Luther's use of the word beruf in his German translation of the bible is idiosyncratic and not important to the transmission of the concept of the calling. Luther's application of the concept of the calling to the laity and idea of sanctified work, however, is the foundation on which the Protestant ethic rests, as Weber claims. Weber's other claims regarding the concept of work in early Protestantism are also supported here. Weber did not overstate the implications for societal transformation in early Protestant theology.

Abstract:
The aim of this master's thesis is to explore and elaborate on the Wagnerian conception of "tempo modification" and its overall relevance in the temporal shaping of music in orchestral conducting. The argument is based on a study that aims to revitalise and establish the tempo identification as a conductor's primary area of interest. This phenomenon is studied through performances and recordings of Weber's Der Freischütz Overture. Terminology for different perspectives on temporal shaping is proposed. The historical impact of tempo modification is explored through a comparative audio analysis of three central recordings. The same analytical procedures are then subsequently applied to the author's two recordings, and a cross-comparison is carried out of all five recordings. The thesis further discusses the use of reduction as a method for a conductor's score analysis. Through this multi-layered analysis, the thesis suggests that tempo modification is a stylistically and historically contingent phenomenon, the application of which is indeed dependent on structural elements in the score, but most of all dependent on compositional style and performance practice.

Altini, Enrico. "Tactile perception - Perception of tactile distance changes with body site: a neural network modelling study." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2012. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/3481/.

Full text
Abstract:

Darmon, Isabelle. "Max Weber's science of reality : types of human being and the possibility of life conduct in contemporary culture." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2011. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/max-webers-science-of-reality-types-of-human-being-and-the-possibility-of-life-conduct-in-contemporary-culture(b227a3ec-ea36-4da3-9a15-4ffdfd591182).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing critically on a line of interpretation opened by Wilhelm Hennis more than 20 years ago, this thesis is concerned with Max Weber's notion of 'human type' (Typus Mensch, Menschentum) and the way in which it enables to pose a philosophical question - what can leading a truly human life in the modern age mean? - from the perspective of social and cultural sciences. To that end, it brings out Weber's framework for the analysis of the inner and external shaping of the human type as well as for the consideration of the possibility of life conduct, examining the inner momentum of the life orders in which human beings deploy their actions, and not merely their 'external' arrangements. Weber's theoretical construct of the life orders and value spheres (especially in the 'Intermediate Reflection') and his analysis of the workings of the rationality of particular spheres of human action (as first and most completely exposed in the 'music study') are at the core of this framework. By suggesting that Weber was critical of - and went far beyond - analyses of the constraining of personality by 'external conditions', I seek to provide an account of his analysis of the manufacturing of adaptation. I show in particular that such fashioning, far from being only the result of the dynamics of rationality pervading all spheres of human action in different ways, rather arises in the interplay between such dynamics and the irrationalities it triggers, including in the rationalised life orders. The adapted human being is not only a carrier of needs or interests, but also of affects and even values: adaptation mobilises 'life'. To such external and inner 'forming' of life, Weber opposed another kind of modern inner vocational connection to specific worldly value spheres. Thus the analysis of the inner momentum of the life orders and value spheres also crucially served Weber's exploration of the possibility of 'life conduct' in opposition to letting life 'slip by' and merely be 'formed'. The thesis has an important comparative strand, at three different levels. First, it sets out Weber's notion of science of reality against the background of the epistemological debates at the turn of the 20th century. This highlights the divide between Weber's conception of the role of science in a disenchanted world and other conceptions, which tended to be captured by philosophies of life. Secondly, specific comparisons are carried out, e.g. between Weber's and Troeltsch's analysis of the coining of a new Menschentum at the time of the Reformation. Finally I provide a more systematic comparison between Weber's and Simmel's analysis of the fate of the modern human being, highlighting the contrast between Weber's affirmation of the possibility of a life conduct that confronts and transforms the world and Simmel's self-referential notion of personality. Drawing on existing encompassing interpretations and on more specialised scholarship, the thesis above all relies on my own textual analysis and interpretation across Weber's writings (including the music study, the methodological guidelines for the survey on industrial labour, the political writings and the writings on academia), Simmel's mature philosophical writings, as well as Troeltsch's Social doctrines of the Christian Churches. The analysis of Dilthey's and Rickert's philosophy of respectively the human and cultural sciences relies on a more selective reading of their major works and on existing scholarship. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part I contextualises the notion of 'science of reality' and exposes the main features of Weber's notion of human type. Part II addresses the deployment of Weber's approach in the modern life orders; whilst part III explores its prolongations on the plane of life conduct and vocation, which it compares with Simmel's notions of objectivation of 'lived experience' and personality.

Full text
Abstract:
Submitted work is based on a critical evaluation of Weber's thesis "the spirit of capitalism", which justified by the "Protestant ethic". The author uses the Weber's starting point for the processing of general spiritual concept, which has a major impact on the emergence, development and maintenance of the economic environment, business and management. After clarification of the fundamental concepts, the work focuses on clarifications to the phenomenon of spirituality, which is connected with the entrepreneurial and managerial activities. Presence of the spiritual character of business potentials was divided into positive and negative factors. General spiritual factors are reflected on the background of basic religious systems -- Judaism, Christianity (Protestantism, Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy), Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and other Asian directions. Spiritual perspectives are compared with the concepts of the science that have their limits or potentials. The practical part is devoted to the proof of spiritual influences on business and economic development. The work culminates in a research of spiritual factors and potentials of entrepreneurship and management between the selected entrepreneurs and managers. The collected factors and potentials are summarized and proposed for their use in the entrepreneurial and managerial practice or managerial training.

Abstract:

Boley, Bertram Bynum. "Sustainability, Empowerment, and Resident Attitudes toward Tourism: Developing and Testing the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale (RETS)." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/51756.

Abstract:
Research on resident attitudes towards tourism and sustainability are two of the most ubiquitous and important topics within tourism research. This study sought to contribute to these fields of research in four specific ways. First, this study suggested Weber's theory of formal and substantive rationality as a theory capable of explaining the complexity inherent in resident attitudes toward tourism because of its incorporation of the economic and non-economic factors influencing rationality. The inclusion of Weber as a theoretical framework is also presented as a theory useful for bringing Social Exchange Theory (SET) back to its original focus on 'all' the costs and benefits associated within the host/guest relationship. The second and third contributions of the study stem from taking the previously conceptual constructs of psychological, social, and political empowerment and developing them into reliable and valid measurement scales. After validation, the three sub-scales were tested in a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), which demonstrated them to be construct valid based upon tests of convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity. These scales were subsequently included as antecedents to residents' perceptions of tourism's impacts, as well as their overall support for tourism in a Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis. The SEM analysis found all three dimensions of empowerment to have significant relationships with perceptions of tourism's positive and negative impacts with the construct of psychological empowerment being the only empowerment dimension to have a direct and significant relationship with 'support for tourism'. Lastly, the study expanded these areas of research through conducting the study across three counties with varying emphasis placed on sustainable tourism. Floyd, Botetourt, and Franklin County, Virginia were selected for sampling based upon their homogeneity in regards to tourism product, per capita tourism expenditures and economic condition and their heterogeneity in regards to emphasis on sustainable tourism. Nine hundred surveys were distributed across the three counties with 703 ultimately used in the analysis. The results partially confirmed the hypothesis that resident attitudes toward tourism differ by a county's emphasis on sustainable tourism. Future research needs to further investigate sustainable tourism's influence on residents' attitudes toward tourism.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to find the virtue ethics John Bunyan presents in Pilgrim´s Progress part 1, compared with the virtues Max Weber presents, and then try Weber´s theory on the empirical data, Pilgrim´s Progress. When I compare the virtues in Weber´s theory with the virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, I interpret Weber´s theory as limited. From Weber´s theory emerges the puritan virtues: fulfillment of duty, struggle, self-control and live simply. He also mentions gratitude to God and helpfulness to other people, but this is shown through work in the society. These virtues can also be found in Pilgrim´s Progress. The fulfillment of duty in Weber´s theory is mainly focused on work-ethic, while I interpret the fulfillment of duty in Pilgrim´s Progress more focused on the struggle with the Belief in God. The virtues self-control and to live simply is clearly seen in both sources, which strengthens this part of Weber´s theory. The most interesting thing is that I found several virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, which Weber did not attributed any significant. These are: forgiveness, help, spiritual communion, and gratitude to God.

Abstract:

Sahni, Isher-Paul. "The administration of justice : an exegesis of Max Weber's 'sociology of law' with a focus on the English law and judge." Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85202.

Abstract:
This study examines two interconnected and as yet wholly neglected aspects of Max Weber's 'Sociology of Law,' namely, its substantive underpinnings and focal concern with the status of the judge. At the heart of the 'Sociology of Law' is a comparative analysis of the Continental and the English administrations of justice, which can best be understood when read against his substantive sociology and which requires an assiduous reading of the 'Sociology of Law.' Thus the first part of this examination elucidates Weber's overarching concern with the effects of bureaucratization on the development of personality. The second part provides a detailed explication of the 'Sociology of Law' which privileges his treatment of the Common Law and distinguishes the juristic and sociological strands of his analysis, re-examines his notion of formal and substantive rationality, pays close attention to his assessment of the Free Law Movement, and accords due place to his discussion of the anti-formalistic tendencies in modern law. Taken together, these expose the contradictions and assumptions which frame his tendentious analysis and bring to light the vital role he ascribes to the judge.

Abstract:
Previous research regarding the European debt crisis has mostly focused on the purely economic aspects of the crisis. However, there is a strong “Protestant-Catholic” dimension in Europe, where historically Protestant countries are more prosperous than their Catholic and Orthodox counterparts. This has especially been a fact since early 2010, when several countries within the European Union had their credit ratings downgraded. Is this phenomenon merely a coincidence? Or could the roots of the recent troubles in Europe have a basis in historic religions? To tackle this question, Max Webers ́s 110 year old study The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is brought back into light and used as a tool for analysis of the crisis. The results show that not only are Protestant countries in general more prosperous, but they also have lower corruption and their citizens have a higher level of trust towards the government. These results are in line with what Weber called the “bureaucratization” and the “rationalization” of the society from a traditional one into a rationalized one. According to Weber, the “protestant work ethic” had certain features that helped create propitious preconditions for rationalization, which were extremely benign for the rise of capitalism in the Western world. Furthermore, the results in this studies show that the historic religions have had a lasting impact on national politics within Europe and that they remain a driving force behind european culture. Historically Protestant countries are therefore in less risk of getting in debt and capitalism still have a better chance of success in these countries.
