When a company decides to change the way it views and manages its operational data, said change should be implemented in a way which allows for the company?s workforce to easily adapt to the new environment. Such was the case at Solvay, a chemical company, where a project was initiated, in late September 2012, (in which I took part) with the aim of creating a web application that would allow its users to view and manipulate manufactoring data. All feasible through a web browser. The aim of this work is to present and describe the project in which I participated during my internship at Solvay. To introduce the knowledge areas with which I had most contact during the project, a literature revision is presented. The aim of this revision is to create a benchmark which will help later on to compare what was done during the course of the project with the best practices in these knowledge areas. Afterwards, I describe the project, detailing how Agile software development principles were applied (Extreme Programming) and the impacts the new application had in the factory?s workflow. I conclude this work with an evaluation of the application and issues that arose during its development.

Abstract:

This thesis will look into what kind of solutions a company or a private person can use if they want to create a dynamic website using only free software. To do this we divided our work in two parts. In the first part, we developed a dynamic website for a Swedish company. On the server side we used exclusively free software with open source code. There are different meanings in how the term “free” should be used when referring to software, which we will explain in the thesis. We have also chosen to work with the XMLtechnology to see if it lives up to its expectations and to see if we could benefit from the technology. Alongside with the development of our site, another company developed a site for the same company as us, by using non-free software. We have described both implementations and compared them to see if it is possible to do the same thing with both free and non-free software.

The investigating part of our work consisted of getting information about what other people think about the free software phenomenon. To do so we created an online questionnaire where we randomly picked 100 Swedish web agencies and asked them to answer 8 questions about what kind of software they used in their company, and what they thought about free software. To get some more opinions we also interviewed two persons involved in these kinds of topics. Jan Sandred, who is a well known expert advisor in topics concerning the Information Technology area and Richard Stallman, the founder of GNU and the Free Software Movement.

The reason for dividing the thesis in two parts was to get an overall picture on the subject. We did not only want to base our results on other people’s thoughts. We wanted to make our own conclusions based on the implementation we did. This approach showed out to be very good. We got to try working with free software ourselves to see its pros and cons and build our own opinions about it. We could then proceed to compare our impressions to other people’s impressions about free software.

Abstract:
This is a dissertation on how we performed a project that gives our customer Ninetech a simple overview of logs. Searching of specific information such as logs in large systems can be time consuming. This was the case for the company Ninetech. Therefore, the company’s will was to have a website to present the logs in a simple format. The website’s purpose was to facilitate and reduce the time when searching for logs. It is important to shorten the time because the logs contain valuable information that the company uses to resolve support issues. The website created is a complete product delivered to the company and is currently running in production. In the project, we have had a close contact with the customer, hence has an agile method applied. As a result, the website has brought the need to find logs quickly and easily. The website has become a part of Ninetech's everyday work. The main focus of the dissertation is devoted to the view that presents logs.

Abstract:

Because data on alumnae/i is difficult to collect and change over time, obtaining up-to-date information on graduates — for the purposes of highlighting their professional achievements and facilitating networking — is a challenge faced by many higher education institutions. Social networks provide a means for alumnae/i to share successes, but viewing this information typically involves an account or a paid subscription. In this project, I address these issues by designing and implementing a free, easy-to-use, and updateable Mills Computer Science alumnae/i website backed by a database. The website has the potential to showcase the most recent or impressive alumnae/i achievements and prominently feature all graduates' accomplishments via their profiles. Additionally the database can store manually provided alumnae/i information and extract further data from LinkedIn. Evaluations of the project indicate that users and administrators find the website easy to search, navigate, and update and the information provided helpful. Because of its versatile design, this project could serve similar needs for other disciplines and institutions.

The history of web is not so long. It’s only 20 years old. By January 1993 there were fifty Web servers across the world, by October 1993 there were over five hundred. Beginning from 2002, new ideas for sharing and exchanging content such as blogs and RSS (Rich Site Summary), rapidly gained its popularity on the Web. This new model for information exchange is called Web 2.0. Instead of using static HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) pages, nowadays there are a lot of the websites where you can actually change the content by yourself without editing the HTML, for example facebook.com, twitter.com, vk.com and much more others. Grace Baptist church is a Christian church that is actively reaching out to college students, military families and other groups of people. They aim to impact not only the community of Manhattan and nearby areas but also to reach around the world with the Gospel. It is very important for the church to have a user friendly website so as to introduce Grace Baptist Church to people who may have an interest in Christianity and church activities. Considering the limitations of the current church website, the administrator of Grace Baptist Church decided to have a new website that better represents the church and attract people to know more about the church’s mission. I and another student Nikhita Addanki from computer science department were working together on this project. The main objective of this project is to redesign and implement a website for Grace Baptist Church. The website will be used to post updated information about church events, announcements and opportunities, share videos and blogs, and let people around the world know about Grace Baptist Church and its mission. The new website has a better page appearance, a well organized structure and mobile support. It is implemented using WordPress, a free content management system, so that people from the church can early update the information without knowing much about web techniques. Alone with the implementation, I also reviewed some articles regarding website usability and performance to assure the quality of the new website. A performance test has also been conducted to evaluate the result.

Abstract:
Website scaling has been an issue since the inception of the web. The demand for user generated content and personalized web pages requires the use of a database for a storage engine. Unfortunately, scaling the database to handle large amounts of traffic is still a problem many companies face. One such company is iFixit, a provider of free, publicly-editable, online repair manuals. Like many websites, iFixit uses Memcached to decrease database load and improve response time. However, the caching strategy used is a very ad hoc one and therefore can be greatly improved. Most research regarding web application caching focuses on cache invalidation, the process of keeping cached content consistent with the permanent data store. Generational caching is a technique that involves including the object’s last modified date in the cache key. This ensures that cache keys change when- ever the object is modified, which effectively invalidates all relevant cache entries. Fine-grained caching is now very simple because the developer doesn’t need to explicitly delete all possible cache keys that might need to be invalidated when an object is modified. This is particularly useful for caching arbitrary fragments of HTML without increasing the complexity of cache invalidation. In this work, we describe the process of implementing a caching strategy based on generational caching concepts in iFixit’s website. Our implementation yielded a 20% improvement in page response time by caching fragments of HTML and results of database queries.

"Formative evaluation method for website interface development." Thesis, Coventry University, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.436297.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall aim of the research was to develop a low cost, tailorable, formative evaluation method for web designers. The last fifteen years has witnessed the rapid development of the World Wide' Web, an information resource that users surf and mine for work, leisure, entertainment and transaction purposes. Its evaluation as a computer based product has led to the assumption by some researchers, that web site and HCI usability are the same (Nielsen, 2000; Brinck, Gergle and Wood, 2002). This is reflected in many web site evaluation guidelines and instruments that characterise usability in terms of learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors and satisfaction (Rubin, 1994). However, the web is used differently from other software e.g. surfing the web is not necessarily task directed and users may access the Internet purely to obtain intellectual and emotional gratification (Spool et ai, 1999). Therefore, it is quite possible that what determines user satisfaction is very different in each context. Additionally, commerce plays a fundamental part in a lot of websites so that their goals may be different from conventional computer system design e.g. to increase the user base or encourage repeat visits. Further, with limited budgets, website designers are unlikely to involve their users during the design process and not all owebsite designers have access to an evaluator, appropriate testing facilities or evaluation knowledge to support their design. Given these arguments, this research developed and validated a low-cost evaluation 'ethod for web designers to use for formative evaluation, prior to site launch. The method addressed both HCI and commercial website goals such as the encouragement of repeat visits. To achieve this, a series of studies were conducted. Firstly, contemporary evaluation methods were evaluated to explore their possible limitations with respect to website design. T.hen the users' and designers' needs from websites and website evaluation methods were identified. This led to the development of a tai/orable method that could be applied to a wide range of small commercial websites, that took into account the issues users of websites were concerned about, and also designers' requirements of an evaluation method. The method was formalized as a set of guidelines, verified in the evaluation of a website. The potential usefulness of the method was then verified by demonstrations to selected website designers who confirmed it was useful, practical, and needed. In summary, this research contributes to knowledge firstly by identifying the need for 'designer friendly' evaluation methods in this context; secondly be showing the mismatch between current methods (based on Hel) and the requirements of website design and thirdly by producing a method to meet the need.

Abstract:
Humans are believed to have ~20,500 protein-coding genes andmuch effort has over the last years been put into the characterizationand localization of the encoded proteins in order to understand theirfunctions. One such effort is the Human Proteome Resource (HPR)project, started in Sweden 2003 with the aim to generate specificantibodies to each human protein and to use those antibodies toanalyze the human proteome by screening human tissues and cells. The work reported in this thesis deals with structuring of data fromantibody-based proteomics assays, with focus on the importance ofaggregating and presenting data in a way that is easy to apprehend. The goals were to model and build databases for collecting, searchingand analyzing data coming out of the large-scale HPR project and tomake all collected data publicly available. A public website, theHuman Protein Atlas, was developed giving all end-users in thescientific community access to the HPR database with proteinexpression data. In 2008, the Human Protein Atlas was released in its4th version containing more than 6000 antibodies, covering more than25% of the human proteins. All the collected protein expression datais searchable on the public website. End-users can query for proteinsthat show high expression in one tissue and no expression in anotherand possibly find tissue specific biomarkers. Queries can also beconstructed to find proteins with different expression levels in normalvs. cancer tissues. The proteins found by such a query could identifypotential biomarkers for cancer that could be used as diagnosticmarkers and maybe even be involved in cancer therapy in the future.Validation of antibodies is important in order to get reliable resultsfrom different assays. It has been noted that some antibodies arereliable in certain assays but not in others and therefore anotherpublicly available database, the Antibodypedia, has been createdwhere any antibody producer can submit their binders together withthe validation data in order for end users to purchase the bestantibody for their protein target and their intended assay.

Abstract:
This project consisted of the development of a web based participant database system to replace a spreadsheet based one for the project “Vi Ses! Språkvänner i Linköping” and the evaluation of it. The design and implementation was done iteratively using a collection of usability guidelines as well as the results of a set of user tests. User tests were also used for the evaluation of the web database system. The task during the user tests was participant matching and the main measurement taken was task completion time. The project resulted in a web database system that could fully replace the spreadsheet database system. The evaluation tests showed that this system was both faster to match participants in as well as less error prone.
Språkvänner i Linköping”.

Standard query language database systems cannot provide the level of flexibility and functionality needed to store all of the data that a modem biologist requires. OWL ontologies provide much more information about how fields relate to each other including adding annotations with each field, but do not allow for the storage of mass amounts of data. By integrating OWL ontologies with modem database systems, scientists will be able to build ontology-based databases that combine the ease of development of ontologies with the power of the modem database. In addition, other scientists can now search ontology-based databases and know that even though the databases are different, the types of data are the same because they are based on a consistent ontology. The use of ontologies in building modem databases will create a new environment where users can customize databases to account for new methods in biology, while at the same time maintaining the ability for others to effectively search the modified databases.

Berelowitz, Jonathan. "The development of a neonatal vital signs database." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26607.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern intelligent monitoring systems use digital computer technology to analyze and evaluate physiological vital signs. This analytical and evaluative process is performed by algorithms developed for this purpose. The degree of 'intelligence' of the monitoring system is dependent on the 'sensitivity' and 'specificity' of these algorithms. In order to develop robust and clinically valid algorithms, a database of representative waveforms is required. The aim of this thesis was to create a neonatal vital signs database to be used for this purpose, by means of a computer-based central station. The computer was interfaced to a number of neonatal monitors (Neonatal ICU, Groote Schuur Hospital). The monitors were interrogated to obtain patient condition, ECG waveforms and respiration waveforms using the impedance technique. When possible, percentage oxygen saturation was also captured. The database contains 509 documented clinical records obtained from 35 patients and 20 records containing examples of technical alarm conditions and high frequency noise. Additional patient record data is included. Clinical events recorded include apnoea, bradycardia, periodic breathing tachycardia, tachypnoea and normal traces. These events were recorded against a variety of signal quality conditions that have been characterized in Appendix C. A prototype rate detection algorithm was checked using samples from the database.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis is about creating server application that process and interprets data from the database. Main aim of such application is able to process a large number of database requests in real-time environment. Provided database contains records of measuring download speed and quality of mobile connection via different radio technology from various providers. Those measured data are sent from users all around the world and amount of data collected is still growing. Therefore created server application can adapt to increasing size of database thanks to aggregation. This method of aggregation and use of index in database tables are further discussed in the theoretical part. Mainly putting indexes in tables produce significant acceleration of processing database requests. Final product of this thesis is an application that consist of three components: a server application running aggregation, website that interprets measured data and back-end interface providing measured data as well. Data at the website are presented in form of graphs for different countries and used radio technologies. Web address and user manual for finished applications are provided in the fourth chapter of diploma thesis. In the last part of thesis are performed various speed tests of programmed application that confirm the effectiveness of selected and described methods to accelerate work with the database.

Abstract:
A database, AmyProt, was developed that collated details of 32 human amyloid proteins associated with disease and 488 associated mutations and polymorphisms, of which 316 are classified as amyloid. A detailed profile of the mutations was developed in terms of location within domains and secondary structures of the proteins and functional effects of the mutations. The data was used to test the hypothesis that mutations enhance amyloidosis in human amyloid proteins have distinctive characteristics, in terms of specific location within proteins and physico-chemical characteristics, which differentiate them from non-amyloid forming polymorphisms in amyloid proteins and from disease mutations and polymorphisms in non-amyloid disease linked proteins. The aim was to use these characteristics to train a prediction algorithm for amyloid mutations that will provide a more accurate prediction than current general disease prediction tools and amyloid prediction tools that focus on aggregating regions. 66 location specific features and changes upon mutation of 366 amino acids propensities, derived from the amino acid index database AAindex, were analysed. A significant proportion of mutations were located with aggregating regions, however the majority of mutations were not associated with these regions. An analysis of motifs showed that amyloid mutations had a significant association with transmembrane helix motifs such as GxxxG. Statistical analysis of substitutions mutations, using substitution matrices, showed that amyloid mutations have a decrease in α-helix propensity and overall secondary structure propensity compared to the disease mutations and disease and amyloid polymorphisms. Machine learning was used to reduce the large set of features to a set of 18 features. These included location near transmembrane helices, secondary structure features; transmembrane and extracellular domains and 4 amino acid propensities: knowledge-based membrane propensity scale from 3D helix; α-helix propensity; partition coefficient; normalized frequency of coil. The AmyProt mutations and non-amyloid polymorphisms were used to train and test the novel amyloid mutation prediction tool, AmyPred, the first tool developed purely to predict amyloid mutations. AmyPred predicts the amyloidogenicity of mutations as a consensus by majority vote (CMV) and mean probability (CMP) of 5 classifiers. Validation of AmyPred with 27 amyloid mutations and 20 non-amyloid mutations from APP, Tau and TTR proteins, gave classification accuracies of 0.7/0.71 (CMV/CMP) and with an MCC of 0.4 (CMV) and 0.41 (CMP). AmyPred out performed other tools such as SIFT (0.37) and PolyPhen (0.36) and the amyloid consensus prediction tool, MetAmyl (0.13). Finally, AmyPred was used to analyse p53 mutations to characterize amyloid and non-amyloid mutations within this protein.

Abstract:
Creating websites providing dynamic services is an extensive process. Intelligent systems are used to create websites with dynamic services. Current intelligent systems are hard to use and configure by the average user. The generated websites are usually custom built to solve one problem and cannot be fully customizable for users on different environments. This thesis presents a technological solution that enables the average user to create websites with dynamic services by providing a number of parameters. The website generator is a web-based application that generates all the components of the website. The components act as portlets and the generated website will be the portal application. The data engine generator creates the website's underlying database. To enable distributed enterprise/business architecture, the data engine generator records the metadata about the database and the website to be generated. The website generator is a cost effective, dynamic, secure, reliable, and scalable solution that outperforms current website generators and portal applications.

Abstract:

In this project relational and Lotus Notes database technology are evaluated with regard to their suitability in providing computer-based support in plant breeding in general and specifically in the production of doubled haploids. The two developed databases are compared based on a set of requirements produced together with the DH-group which is the main users of the databases. The results indicate that both Lotus Notes and the relational databases are able to fulfil all needs documented in this project, although both systems have their limitations. An often expressed opinion is that it is difficult to combine biology and databases. The experience gained in this project however suggests that it does not need to be the case in instances where data is not as complicated as often discussed. Observations made during this project indicate that data warehousing with integrated data mining and OLAP tools are surprisingly similar to how the DH-group at Svalöf Weibull works and could be a suitable solution for the production of doubled haploids.

Lewington, John Alfred. "Factors affecting the development of sophisticated database marketing systems." Thesis, Open University, 1998. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57873/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the late 1980s, companies in a wide variety of industries began to implement segmented marketing strategies using database marketing (DBM) systems. Several surveys noted that some organisations were developing sophisticated DBM systems to achieve competitive advantage, while others, in similar marketplaces, seemed unable, or unwilling, to exploit the potential benefits of these powerful systems. Alternatively, evidence from industrial reports suggested that most companies were failing to fully exploit the capabilities oftheir systems. Hence, this research was designed to determine the factors affecting levels of sophistication in database marketing (DBM) systems. First, theories from marketing and information systems were synthesised to develop a generic model of DBM systems. Next, notions about the sources of competitive advantage were reviewed to identify potential factors promoting the development of sophisticated DBM systems. This review resulted in four such factors being hypothesised: market orientation as a specific organisation culture, database size (i.e. number of customers) as a key resource, locus of control of the senior marketing manager as an important individual characteristic, and the difference between consumer and business markets as a factor in firms' external environment. Empirical data were collected from two random samples of senior marketing managers in US catalogue companies using postal surveys. Data from the first sample (36 observations) were used to develop a valid and reliable construct to measure the level of sophistication in DBM systems. Further data were collected from a second random sample using two further postal surveys (69 observations), which confirmed and replicated the results obtained from the first sample. Overall, the research findings show that the development of sophisticated DBM systems is positively associated with two factors: market orientation of organisation culture, and database size. The other two factors - locus of control and type of market - failed to show any association with the level of sophistication in DBM systems. Further data analyses revealed a strong association between the elements of sophisticated OBM systems and marketing notions of sources of competitive advantage.

For many people, online communication has meant a plethora of communication media - emails, instant messages, blogs, etc. Often this has led to clustered desktop displays and ineffective integration between communication media. Software development teams are adversely affected by the lack of integration between applications. When project managers, software developers and clients come together to work on one or more projects, certain communication and managerial considerations and requirements become apparent. A server-based Integrated Messaging Framework (IMF) provides all communication media messages with a common messaging format. i-LINK, an intelligent client application uses IMF to send, receive, log, and store messages from different communication channels. There are contrasting database models from which to choose when designing the IMF data model (i.e.: flat file, relational, object oriented, objected relational). However, the IMF was designed using a relational data model due to the stability it offered, the protection provided through referential integrity and constraints, as well as other unique benefits. When considering the services that IMF is designed to provide, certain existing messaging standards are conceptually useful to analyze before designing the IMF data model. The RFC 2778 provides a universal Instant Messaging (IM) data model which can be mapped to provide such services as presence and instant messaging. Microsoft Outlook, a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI), presents a data storage mechanism. The IMF database model integrates concepts from existing messaging standards and refines the integration of different communication media while acting as a central repository.

The main goal of this research was to establish a website-based electrocorticogram(ECoG)-database.This database will provide clinical signal to investigators interested in studying brain signals. Different database models such as the hierarchical, network, relational and object-oriented models and their associated softwave tools were compared and tried. Finally, we decided to use relational model to establish our database. We used Microsoft Access 2003 and SQL server to setup the ECoG database. The Access database will store the patients' clinical information, such as medication or therapeutic response. The most important part of the database is to store the ECoG raw data that were acquired from patients. We selected the ASP.NET 4.0 and used Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express to develop the ECoG website. We hope that this ECoG database will be helpful to the users in their neuroscience researches.

Abstract:

This project is concerned with identifying and investigating a problem faced by students undertaking studies in opera, namely, readily available performance related materials for students of opera to consult when preparing for a performance. The purpose of this project is to develop an internet-based resource containing a range of information about operas, musical scores and their interpretation, opera recordings, opera literature, opera composers, opera performers, and opera companies as a solution to this problem. The Project uses aspects of opera interpretation and opera libretti as a theoretical framework.

In order to accomplish these outcomes, this project demonstrates that no single source of information that is presently available in print or electronic form is comprehensive, reliable and convenient enough to provide opera students with information necessary for use in a production. The Project highlights the need for an electronic resource that is comprehensive for opera students.

The analysis of the usability of website research literature indicates that successful electronic resources embody the principles of: "24/7", 'anywhere', 'anytime' access; ease-of-access, user-friendly website design; and resources relevant to the specific enquiry of the user in their design.

The Project leads to the conclusion that no single source of information is comprehensive enough for an opera student to acquire, process and assimilate all of the information necessary for use in a production.

The overarching product of the project is a design and guidelines for the development of an internet-based resource aimed at eliminating the lack of performance related materials in the field of opera study. I call this resource Operapaedia.

Reis, Maria Margarida Rodrigues. "Portugal chefs: conceção e desenvolvimento de website." Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/20583.

Full text
Abstract:
This project consisted in the conception and development of a website focused on portuguese chefs, and foreign chefs working in Portugal, named Portugal Chefs. It is a website entirely thought by myself, due to my interest in the theme and also my belief that there is a gap in what concerns virtual sites promoting fine dining professionals for an international public, namely tourists that visit our country. The starting point of the project was the creation of a database which gathers the main successful chefs in Portugal - in activity, so they can be visited in their restaurants by the readers, and having the website the function of guiding the user towards the chef/restaurante he wants to know considering his location. The selection of chefs for the database was made based on my knowledge of the most awarded cuisine professionals and restaurantes, valued by the foodies and referenced in specialized and generalist media. From that point, the goal was to create a website with a design that is suitable to the cuisine theme, with a touch of luxury (as we are speaking of fine dining), and above all where the content is presented in a clear manner and is easily navigable and searchable. I also had the audience’s interaction with the project as a priority, that comes together with social media and the blog. Regarding the technical side, the website was developed using Adobe software, including Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, and the programming languages HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL.

Enterprise in this era of information, competition becomes furious and needs of customer are more complex, needs to build competence advantage elaborately. Efficiently utilizing customer information to manage relationship with client and effectively implementing marketing strategy is important. Datebase is core resource of shopping website industry so that marketing staff devote to extract valuable information from historic transaction record. Utilizing databese marketing skill integrating marketing knowledge and statistic methodology is useful to distinguish different needs of each customer. This thesis use activity index and reliability index to analyze customer value. Besides, we use Hierarchical Bayesian methodology to modify the bias from shortage of individual transaction record and take customer heterogeneity into account. In addition, migration analysis could assist in predicting customer behavior and adopt dynamic marketing strategy. The final results of this thesis provides systematic customer research structure with shopping website enterprise to allocate marketing resource to beneficial customer and strengthen customer relationship management.
