Abstract:

Despite extensive studies on Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in McMurdo Sound since the 1960s, uncertainty still remains regarding female foraging habits during the lactation period. Based on their large body mass at the start of lactation and large relative mass loss at the end, the current hypothesis is that Weddell seals fast or feed to a neglible extent during lactation. However, this hypothesis has not been fully tested to date, as evidence for foraging is indirect and is based primarily on dive behaviour. The formation of sea ice in the presence of turbulence was studied using data from drifting buoy deployments and ice sampling in the Weddell Sea during April 2000. The study sought to improve understanding of pancake ice in terms of dynamics, heat fluxes, ice growth rates and mechanisms. Ice motion at high frequencies was examined using GPS buoy positions at a 20-minute sampling interval. The study of life history traits such as age at first reproduction and the evaluation of recruitment probabilities and reproductive costs allow insight regarding the diverse factors and mechanisms shaping reproductive strategies. We investigated these mechanisms using a 26-year mark-resight dataset for Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in Erebus Bay, Antarctica. A desintegração da plataforma de gelo da enseada Larsen A, em 1995, possibilitou uma oportunidade para estudar a comunidade bêntica da região. Foram analisadas a densidade da macrofauna e a densidade e biomassa da meiofauna. Nanoplankton (cell diameters 2-20 μm) are poorly resolved by traditional microscopy, and it is becoming apparent that unknown diversity and ecosystem functionality may be contained in this size class: for example, small diatoms (< 10 μm) appear widespread in the SO, and may limit our understanding of the response of phytoplankton communities to climate change.

A radiative transfer model was used to determine the influence of aerosols, cloud droplet size and water content on the radiative heat budget of the Weddell Sea. The modeled irradiances were compared with observations, and the model calculated the upward longwave irradiance from the Weddell Sea ice pack.
