Abstract:
In 2018 James Tooley, and colleagues, launched a no-frills private school – the Independent Grammar School: Durham (IGSD). This offers full-time education for £58 per week per child (2019-20), in contrast to the markedly higher cost per capita in either the state sector or in established private schools. We question IGSD's affordability and viability. We examine Tooley's educational vision, and his work in the provision of lowcost private schooling in Africa and India to identify IGSD's ontology to understand what no-frills might mean, and how this could be delivered.

There is no question that weeds negatively impact human endeavors, both in agricultural and non-agricultural environments. The need for weed population management is inarguable. The important issue is “how will we manage weeds in the future”? Will it be business as usual, or will we be able to develop and implement a fully integrated approach to weed management? If Weed Science is to become a full partner in utilizing the concepts of Integrated Pest Management, there are at least four research areas that must be significantly strengthened. These research areas include: biology and ecology of w

Non-marketable crops are increasingly being used as a tool to promote agroecosystem services and sustainable agriculture. Nevertheless, crops vary greatly in the traits by which they capture resources and influence the local ecosystem. Here we report on the traits of wheat crop that relate to aboveground biomass production, nutrient capture, weed suppression and soil building by the influence of 4 different cover crops. All agroecosystem services were positively correlated with maximum crop biomass and leaf area. Root density was positively associated with indices of other soil building attrib

Sustainable landscapes provide environmental, social, and financial benefits, with interest and adoption increasing due to environmental awareness. Ornamental ground-cover systems have garnered interest in the landscape due to the reduced need for water, fertilizers, pesticides, and maintenance compared to typical landscapes; however, limited research on groundcover ability to modulate soil conditions or suppress weeds exists. This study explored how ornamental groundcover systems impact the sustainability of landscapes. The effects of ground-cover growth habit (matting; bunching) and irrigati

Chemical weed control is an important weed management option in nursery crop production and landscape maintenance. Improved methods of herbicide delivery can increase efficacy of chemical control and minimize off-site movement, applicator exposure, and incorrect herbicide application. Certain innovative technologies show potential for addressing these issues in the nursery industry. Slow-release herbicide tablets have shown promise in container production. Rice is one of the staple food crops of India, and Karnataka is one of the major rice-producing states. The primary method of rice establishment in Karnataka is transplanting, but farmers are opting to shift to direct-seeding of rice. Weed management is critical for realizing optimal yield of direct-seeded rice (DSR). The objective of this review was to synthesize the published literature on weeds and weed management in rice in Karnataka, identify improved weed-management technologies for delivery to farmers, and suggest research needs. Abstract:
Weeds are unwanted plants, which interfere with the crop production. Weeds compete with crops for resources, causing severe yield loss. Chemical weed control through herbicides is a quite effective and reliable strategy to manage weeds. Herbicides constitute a major share of the global pesticide market. However, the applied herbicides undergo losses in the agroecosystem in different ways (chemical degradation, microbial decomposition, photo-degradation, leaching, run-off, and volatilization), thus lowering the herbicidal action coupled with contaminating ecosystem and groundwater.
