Abstract:

Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG) is a systemic disease characterized by necrotizing granulomatous inflammation of the upper and lower respiratory tract, glomerulonephritis, and vasculitis. The clinical manifestations and laboratory findings suggest an autoimmune disease resulting from a hypersensitivity reaction to some environmental agent. The purpose of the survey is for assessing the awareness about wegeners granulomatosis disease amongst dental students. A cross-sectional survey was done with questionnaire comprising a total of ten multiple-choice questions which were distributed to 100 undergraduate dental students. The questions elicited awareness about the etiology, clinical features, diagnostic tests, treatment methods and complications of wegeners granulomatosis. The responses were collected and analysed. 7% were aware of etiology of Wegeners granulomatosis, 9% were aware of clinical features of Wegeners granulomatosis, 5% were aware of diagnostic tests of Wegeners granulomatosis, 5% were aware of the treatment of Wegeners granulomatosis, and 4% were aware of complications of Wegeners granulomatosis. The awareness of Wegener's granulomatosis among dental students is inadequate. Granulomatosis of Wegener is a relatively uncommon, autoimmune condition of unknown origin. Without medication, thus many patients would then inevitably die of those same illness. Therefore, awareness and education initiatives must be pursued to enlighten students about this illness.

Abstract:

Alfred Wegener is universally known for his work on continental drift, but Wegener also made an interesting contribution, just after the First World War, to the study of lunar craters. Wegener reviewed the various hypotheses for lunar cratering, evaluated them from the standpoint of physics, and then performed a series of simple but ingenious experiments from which he concluded that the craters were impact phenomena, occasionally accompanied by secondary melting. This work was probably more important for the theory of scale models in geophysical experiments than it was to the history of selenology, but Wegener's view that lunar craters were impact phenomena and (perhaps more significantly) the reasoning on which he based this conclusion are now generally accepted, along with his once-scorned ideas on continental mobility.

Abstract:

The Dutch geophysicist Felix Vening Meinesz is a familiar name in the history of plate tectonics, because of his discovery of the so-called Meinesz zone, a large-scale gravity anomaly in Indonesia. However, what is not familiar is how he himself viewed the theory of Wegener. This article traces how Vening Meinesz thought about Wegener's theory, how it related to his scientific work and how his view of it changed during his career. Vening Meinesz influenced how Dutch geologists thought about Wegener's theory.

Abstract:

Objective: To highlight the different clinical features, parameters of diagnosis and to see the effectof chemotherapy and steroids on this disease. Setting: Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery JinnahHospital Lahore. Period: From Dec 1998 to July 2001.Methods: Five cases of Wegener Granulomatosis were studiedduring the study period. Three patients had limited disease while two patients had generalized disease with renalinvolvement. All patients were started on azathiopurine (2mg/Kg/day) or cyclophoshamide (1-2mg/km/day) along withsteroids. After a months time the dose of steroid was reduced to alternate day. Weekly monitoring of white blood cellcount with urine examination for RBCs or protein casts was done. Any patient with haematuria or TLC reduced to lessthan 3500 were immediately taken off from cyclophoshamide and azathiopurine was started. Patients having classicdisease , dose of cyclophoshamide had to be increased from two to four milligram / per Kilogram per day to achievea good response. The response to treatment was measured by noticing the resolution of pulmonary infiltrates reducedESR and negative C-ANCA. Results: We found nasal symptoms like nasal obstruction and epistaxis to be the mostcommon symptom followed by fever, cough and deafness. Crusting, granulations and occasional perforation wereusually found on nasal examination. Conductive deafness wasmost common ear finding. History, clinical examination,ESR, C-ANCA and a representative biopsy were all essential in diagnosing this condition. Azathiopurine andcyclophosphamidewere the main chemotherapeutic agents used with prednisone to cause remission in all our patientsexcept one who died two weeks after having been admitted in our institution. Surprisingly in contrast to the normalcause of high mortality reported in international literature in this disease to be renal failure, our patient died due torespiratory failure. Four out of five patients went into remission a year after regular treatment with this regime. Themajor complications occurring during hospital stay and their treatment were nausea, vomiting, sudden fall of TLC, andoral thrush. Conclusion: The common presentation of patient with Wegner’s Granulomatosis is of upper respiratorytract symptoms like nasal obstruction and epistaxis followed by lower respiratory symptoms like cough, fever andHaemoptysis. A representative biopsy with positive C-ANCA and high ESR are hallmarks of diagnosing this condition.The most effective medical regime till today is cyclophosphamide and azathiopurine with alternate day prednisone forinducing remission.

Abstract:

In a 23-year-old man with Wegener’s granulomatosis and mild bleeding coagulation studies revealed a significant prolongation of the coagulation time (CT) prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time (TT), failure of TT and aPTT to correct in a 1:1 mixture with pooled normal plasma (PNP), correction of the prolonged TT with toluidine blue and correction of TT and aPTT both in vitro and in vivo^protamine sulphate (P.S.).All other coagulation tests, i.e.,bleeding time, platelet count? fibrinogen level, euglobulme lysis time were within normal limits. The patient did not receive heparine. TT after administration of 5ml of protamine sulphate i.v. to the patient became normal - 18,2 s (19,7 s).In summary a patient with Wegener s granulomatosis associated with an endogenous heparine-like anticoagulant is reported. The anticoagulant could be corrected both in vitro and in vivo by protamine sulphate.

In the Helmholtz Future Project ARCHES (Autonomous Robotic Networks to Help Modern Societies) with a consortium of partners from AWI (Alfred- Wegener-Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research), DLR (German Aerospace Center), KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), and the GEOMAR (Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel), several Digital Twins of ocean observation systems were developed by the GEOMAR and AWI. The ARCHES Digital Twin Framework is one of the results of this project. The software is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) and is written in Python.

Abstract:

The GEOMAR Helmhotz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is operating a Media Asset Management System (MAMS) which manages large amounts image- and video data. Similar systems are operated by the Helmholtz Centre HEREON and by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). Although the MAMS system provides access to data and metadata using an API, it is not possible to directly request image data without prior knowledge of the internal MAMS data structure. The image broker is a web service which brokers between a client (e.g. web-browser) and the MAMS. It allows users to request images by metadata values (e.g. image uuid). The broker uses the [IIIF](https://iiif.io/) standard which allows users to request the images in different formats, scaled copies or only specific parts of the image.

Abstract:

Die Goethe-Universität befindet sich seit einigen Jahren in einem deutlichen Wandel. Der Campus Westend wird zum Zentralcampus ausgebaut und auch personell wächst die Goethe-Universität. Fast 47.000 Studierende und mehr als 5.000 Beschäftigte (Stand Herbst 2014) studieren und arbeiten an den Campussen. Die Goethe-Universität ist damit einer der bedeutendsten Verkehrserzeuger in Frankfurt, da nahezu täglich über 50.000 Personen ihren Studien- oder Arbeitsplatz an der Goethe-Universität erreichen müssen und auch zwischen den verschiedenen Standorten pendeln. Das folgende Arbeitspapier befasst sich mit der Mobilität der Studierenden und der Beschäftigten der Goethe-Universität, die mittels zweier Online-Befragungen erhoben und analysiert wurden. Es werden die zentralen Erkenntnisse bezüglich der vorhandenen Mobilitätsressourcen und wohnungsnahen Mobilitätsangebote, des Verkehrsverhaltens hinsichtlich der Häufigkeit, Dauer und Länge von Wegen zu und zwischen den Campussen und der Nutzung von Verkehrsmitteln, den Einstellungen zu den verschiedenen Verkehrsmitteln und die Nutzungsbereitschaft bezüglich optionaler Mobilitätsangebote der Universität vorgestellt. Abschließend wird ein Resümee über den durch die Universität erzeugten Verkehr gezogen und auf Basis umfassender zielgruppenspezifischer Erkenntnisse werden Vorschläge zur Entzerrung, Verlagerung und Optimierung für ein universitäres Mobilitätsmanagement entwickelt.

Abstract:

Der Verzicht auf Kernkraftwerke und der Ausbau von Solar- und Windenergie führen dazu, dass die Stromproduktion volatiler wird. Damit Strom dann zur Verfügung steht, wenn er gebraucht wird, braucht es neue Speichersysteme. Eine vielversprechende Technologie ist die adiabatische Druckluftspeicherung. Sie nutzt überschüssigen Strom aus Solar- und Windanlagen, um Umgebungsluft zu komprimieren und diese in einem unterirdischen Hohlraum zu speichern. Bei Bedarf wird die komprimierte Luft wieder expandiert; sie treibt dabei eine Turbine an und erzeugt wieder Strom. Da die bei der Komprimierung entstandene Wärme genutzt wird, beträgt die Effizienz 65 bis 75 Prozent; das ist ein ähnlicher Wert wie jener, den Pumpspeicher erreichen. Auch die Umweltverträglichkeit von Druckluftspeichern ist, gemessen am Treibhausgaspotenzial und an Schäden an Ökosystemen, vergleichbar mit jener von Pumpspeichern. Druckluftspeicher sind technisch machbar. Wichtige Komponenten wie Turbomaschinen und Wärmespeicher sind entweder bereits auf dem Markt erhältlich oder wurden in einer Pilotanlage erprobt. Der Bau von Hohlräumen ist zudem durch die Erfahrungen im Tunnel- und Kavernenbau ausgereift. Adiabatische Druckluftspeicher sind also eine effiziente, umweltverträgliche und technisch machbare Speicherlösung. Wegen der hohen Kapitalkosten sowie der unklaren wirtschaftlichen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen ist allerdings ungewiss, ob sie wirtschaftlich sein können. Dies erschwert auch die Finanzierung einer Demonstrationsanlage.

Abstract:

Das weltweit vorherrschende Entwicklungsmodell in Form eines kontinuierlichen Wirtschaftswachstums steht in der Kritik – dies nicht allein, aber vor allem auch wegen seiner ökologisch negativen Auswirkungen.1 Die Kritik am Wachstumsparadigma ist jedoch keineswegs neu, vielmehr gibt es sie fast schon so lange wie das Wirtschaftswachstum selbst.2 Mit Blick auf die zurück-liegenden 50 Jahre führte vor allem der erste Bericht an den Club of Rome (Meadows et al. 1972) zu einer breiteren gesellschaftlichen Diskussion um die „Grenzen des Wachstums“ auf einem Planeten mit endlichen natürlichen Res-sourcen. Die wachstumskritischen Beiträge der jüngeren Vergangenheit knüpfen daran an, erweitern die frühe Diskussion unter Schlagworten wie „Post-wachstum“, „Green Growth“ oder „De-Growth“ jedoch zugleich um neue Perspektiven der Kritik, aber auch denkbare Lösungen des Konflikts zwischen Wachstum und Umweltschutz.3 Zwar sind Zielkonflikte und damit einhergehende Opportunitätskosten als solches aus ökonomischer Sicht keine Besonderheit. Die Brisanz des Konflikts zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum und Um-weltverbrauch kann jedoch in der mittlerweile erreichten Eingriffsintensität ökonomischen Handelns in die natürlichen Regelkreisläufe gesehen werden, die den Fortbestand der menschlichen Zivilisation selbst gefährden könnte. Vor dem Hintergrund dieses in den zurückliegenden Ausführungen sich aus-drückenden Konflikts zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum und Umwelt(-schutz) geht der vorliegende Beitrag zunächst der Frage nach, wie sich dieser Zielkonflikt aus ökonomischer Sicht sowohl inhaltlich als auch institutionell näher bestimmen lässt (Kapitel 2). Dies schließt auch eine Betrachtung mit ein, wie sich das Verhältnis von Wachstum und Umwelt im Verlauf des wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungsprozesses und damit in der zeitlichen Dimension gestaltet, wie dies den Überlegungen zur „Umwelt-Kuznets-Hypothese“ zugrunde liegt. Daran anschließend werden verschiedene Ansätze vorgestellt, die unterschiedliche Reformmaßnahmen zur „Entschärfung“ der Beziehung zwischen Wirtschaftswachstum und Umweltverbrauch zum Gegenstand haben (Kapitel 3). Diese lassen sich grob danach differenzieren, ob (1) der Zielkonflikt als nur einseitig zulasten des Wachstumsziels lösbar eingestuft wird (De-Growth- bzw. Postwachstums-Ansätze), (2) ein schonender Umgang mit natürlichen Ressourcen als nur durch eine grundlegende ethische Neuausrichtung der Marktwirtschaft realisierbar gilt (Ansatz der Gemeinwohlökonomie) oder (3) von der Möglichkeit einer weitgehenden Entkoppelung von Wirtschaftswachstum und Umweltverbrauch (Ansätze des „Green Growth“) ausgegangen wird. Der Beitrag endet mit der Ableitung ordnungspolitischer Schlussfolgerungen, die als wichtige Bausteine einer Lösung des Zielkonflikts zwischen Wachstum und Umwelt zu verstehen sind (Kapitel 4).
