AbstractSlaman and Wehner have constructed structures which distinguish the computable Turing degree 0 from the noncomputable degrees, in the sense that the spectrum of each structure consists precisely of the noncomputable degrees. Downey has asked if this can be done for an ordinary type of structure such as a linear order. We show that there exists a linear order whose spectrum includes every noncomputable degree, but not 0. Since our argument requires the technique of permitting below a set, we include a detailed explantion of the mechanics and intuition behind this type of permitting.

This paper aims to investigate the evolution of aggregate-surface characteristics due to tyre polishing action. Three kinds of aggregates were polished by the Wehner/Schluze polishing machine. The evolution of dynamic friction coefficient, surface height profiles and their power spectral density in polishing process were characterized. Spectrum analysis is conducted to characterization the polishing effects on surface texture. The results reveal that the polishing action of rubber tyre plays an important role in the changes of micro-texture, and the evolution of friction of aggregate is governed by micro-texture changes due to differential removal of mineral components.

Abstract:
A recent theory attempts to explain how bees take their compass orientation from the pattern of polarized light in the sky (S. Rossel and R . Wehner, Nature 323, 128-131 (1986)). According to this theory, orientation can be erroneous and lead to the wrong course of a recruited bee in search of the foraging site whenever only a small patch of the blue sky is visible to the bee. It is shown that orientation under natural conditions is not erroneous, if the compass reference is variable in time but equally defined for both, scout bees and recruits.

Abstract:
Four groups of granite aggregates with different mineral structures were investigated. They were formed into test plates with a flat surface and polished with the Aachen Rafeling Tester using quartz powder and quartz sand as the polishing agent respectively. At the end of each polishing stage, the friction coefficient of these plates was measured with the skid resistance tester (SRT) and the Wehner/Schulze test apparatus (PWS), which represent different contact conditions. By comparison of the different friction development in the course of polishing, the influence of mineral composition and crystal size on the polishing resistance and friction coefficient of the aggregates is determined. This new methodology can be applied to evaluate the long-term skid resistance of the aggregates for road engineering.

The hydraulic behavior of waste stabilization ponds is rather complex, and the flow in ponds can at best be described as dispersed flow. The dispersion characteristics of existing ponds can be determined by tracer studies, but it is impractical to perform tracer studies under every possible hydraulic condition. On the other hand, in the assessment of pond performance, first-order kinetics for BOD removal and bacterial die-off have been generally adopted. In this study, a nonlinear least-squares scheme will be presented for the simultaneous estimation of the decay constant and the dispersion number from the well known Wehner-Wilhelm equation which describes the reduction in pollutant concentration in a chemical reactor exhibiting first-order kinetics and non-ideal mixing conditions. As an example, the procedure developed will be applied to actual BOD data obtained from model facultative ponds in Kuwait.

We study a generalization of non-local games—which we call extended non-local games —in which the players, Alice and Bob, initially share a tripartite quantum state with the referee. In such games, the winning conditions for Alice and Bob may depend on the outcomes of measurements made by the referee, on its part of the shared quantum state, in addition to Alice and Bob's answers to randomly selected questions. Our study of this class of games was inspired by the monogamy-of-entanglement games introduced by Tomamichel, Fehr, Kaniewski and Wehner, which they also generalize. We prove that a natural extension of the Navascués–Pironio–Acín hierarchy of semidefinite programmes converges to the optimal commuting measurement value of extended non-local games, and we prove two extensions of results of Tomamichel et al. concerning monogamy-of-entanglement games.

Die Verkehrssicherheit ist für Verkehrsteilnehmer und Infrastrukturbetreiber von zentraler Bedeutung. Diese wird in hohem Maße von der Griffigkeit der Fahrbahnoberfläche bestimmt. Es existieren derzeit keine gängigen Regelwerke für die Bewertung der Griffigkeit für winterliche Straßenverhältnisse. Im Rahmen dieser Untersuchungen werden Griffigkeitsniveaus bei verschiedenen Glatteisüberdeckungen für unterschiedliche Asphaltoberflächen erfasst und analysiert. Mithilfe der Untersuchungsergebnisse wird eine Vorhersage der Griffigkeit bei Eisglätte angestrebt. Verschiedene Asphaltbohrkerne mit unterschiedlicher Oberflächenbeschaffenheit werden sowohl einer Griffigkeitsuntersuchung bei Nässe (Referenzvariante) als auch bei unterschiedlichen Glatteisüberdeckungen unterzogen. Basierend auf der Korrelationsanalyse wurden Funktionen mittels Regressionsanalysen mit einem Bestimmtheitsmaß von R² zwischen 0,80 und 0,86 für die prognostizierte und die gemessene Griffigkeit ermittelt.   Die Griffigkeit bei Nässe (d. h. Referenzgriffigkeit) stellt auch bei der Vorhersage der Griffigkeit von Eis den größten Einflussfaktor dar. Die durchgeführten Laborversuche validieren, dass der Prüfstand nach Wehner/Schulze, in abgewandelter Form, für die Bewertung der Griffigkeit von Asphaltfahrbahnen unter winterlichen Bedingungen geeignet ist.

Zusammenfassung. In diesem Beitrag berichten wir auf der Basis einer empirischen Studie über die Bedeutsamkeit von vertrauensrelevanten Charakteristika in einem virtuellen Netzwerk. Aufbauend auf eine Repertory-Grid-Studie von Clases, Bachmann und Wehner (2003) zur Erhebung von persönlichen Konstrukten über die Vertrauensgenese, wurde ein Fragebogen mit Aussagen über vertrauensrelevante Charakteristika von Netzwerken entwickelt. Damit wurde untersucht, inwieweit diese Charakteristika für die Eintritts- und Austrittsentscheidung sowie für den Prozess der Beteiligung am Netzwerk relevant sind. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass vertrauensrelevante Netzwerkcharakteristika, die bei der Eintrittsentscheidung eine wichtige Rolle spielen, auch potenzielle Austrittsgründe darstellen. Zudem kann gezeigt werden, dass die Netzwerkpartner sich in hohem Maße darauf verlassen, dass vertrauensrelevante Netzwerkcharakteristika erst im Prozess der Beteiligung tatsächlich auftreten. Im Hinblick auf die Vertrauensgenese bedeutet dies, dass Vertrauen zwar erst im Rahmen der konkreten Beteiligung entstehen kann, aber bereits bei der Eintrittsentscheidung eine Rolle spielt, und dass nicht eingelöstes Vertrauen zur Beendigung der Zusammenarbeit führen kann. In methodologischer Hinsicht wurden mit der Studie neue Wege zur Untersuchung von Vertrauen in virtuellen Unternehmensnetzwerken exploriert, welche kritisch zu reflektieren sind.

The mechanisms of unisotropic atomic emission from single crystals under ion bombardment (Ar+, E < 25keV) have been investigated by depositing the sputtered atoms in a semi-spherical collector. A subsequent determination of the thickness distributions of the deposited films by electron backscattering gives the total angular atomic emission distribution, showing maxima in certain crystallographic directions of the sputtered target crystal: Wehner spots.Several mechanisms for the appearance of spot patterns are discussed in the literature:1.For normal incidence of the ions collision cascades are assumed with finally isotropic momentum distributions within the target crystal. Then a momentum transfer to atoms near the target surface may be possible by the following models (fig. 1):1a.Collision sequences along close packed atomic chains (e.g. the <110> direction in fcc crystals). If the residual collision energy exceeds the surface binding energy the atom at the surface end of the chain is emitted into the chain direction: Focusson model (fig. 1a).1b.Emission of subsurface atoms through potential minima between surface atoms (fig. 1b), and emission of surface atoms by central collision of subsurface atoms (fig. 1c). Abstract:
Der Einsatz von Streumitteln im Rahmen des Winterdienstes zur Beseitigung von Eis und Schnee auf der Fahrbahn ist eine weit verbreitete Maßnahme. Um die Frage zu beantworten, ob das eingesetzte Streumittel Auswirkungen auf die Oberflächeneigenschaften der Straße hat, werden im Rahmen dieser Forschungsarbeit unterschiedliche Untersuchungen durchgeführt. Die Asphaltproben werden einer Teststrecke entnommen und im Anschluss mithilfe des Aachener Ravelling Testers unter verschiedenen Bedingungen poliert. Die Griffigkeit der Proben wird mit dem Prüfstand nach Wehner/Schulze bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Griffigkeit durch das Streumittel und Wasser in Hinblick auf das Abfahren des Bitumens und das Polieren der Gesteinskörnung beeinflusst wird. Insbesondere kann beim Polieren ohne Wasser beobachtet werden, dass sich das Streumittel mit dem Gummiabrieb verbindet und am Bitumen haftet. Dadurch entsteht ein dünner Film von Ablagerungen auf der Oberfläche, welche die Makrotexturtiefe reduzieren und somit die Griffigkeit der Straßenoberfläche stark beeinträchtigen. Im Vergleich zu anderen Streumitteln hat Tausalz eine positive Wirkung auf die Griffigkeit, da es den Bitumenfilm von der Oberfläche sehr schnell abträgt, während die Gesteinskörner nur minimal poliert werden. Daher stellt der Einsatz von Tausalz eine optimale Möglichkeit für die Enteisung von Fahrbahnoberflächen in Winterperioden, bei gleichzeitiger Erhaltung der langfristigen Griffigkeit und der Verkehrssicherheit dar.

In order to ensure the safety of traffic, asphalt pavement is commonly required to utilize aggregates with excellent anti-abrasion property. This results in the lack of high-quality aggregates. The incorporation of solid waste in the aggregates is regarded as a high potential alternative for solving this problem. Since its material properties, such as rough surface, high Polished Stone Value (PSV) and the excellent adhesion property of asphalt, Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag can effectively improve the skid resistance of asphalt mixtures. First, the material properties of BOF slag are reviewed in this study. Then, the skid resistance of asphalt mixtures and aggregates are commendably evaluated by the Polished Stone Value test, Wehner/Schulze Tester, Aachen Polishing Machine, British Pendulum Test and Sand Patch test. The physical and mechanical properties of BOF slag play a key role in asphalt mixtures. This review found that the skid resistance mechanism of the BOF slag asphalt mixture is governed by factors such as BOF slag properties, incorporation methods and gradation types. Finally, the economic and environmental benefits of BOF slag asphalt mixtures were discussed. In addition, the function of gas catalysis and the melting of ice and snow can be added to the BOF slag asphalt mixture for a cleaner development in engineering. Furthermore, the existing problems, research directions and corresponding measures in this field are directed towards more durable and functional asphalt pavement construction.

To patch clamp the basolateral cell membrane, sheets of Necturus gallbladder epithelium were stripped of the subepithelial tissue layers and affixed apical side down on cover slips coated with Cell-Tak [F. Wehner, L. Garretson, K. Dawson, Y. Segal, and L. Reuss. Am. J. Physiol. 258 (Cell Physiol. 27): C1159-C1164, 1990]. In 90% of the patches we observed K+ channels identical to the maxi-K+ channels previously demonstrated in the apical membrane (Y. Segal and L. Reuss. J. Gen. Physiol. 95: 791-818, 1990). To ascertain whether these channels were present in the native tissue, we carried out intracellular-microelectrode studies. We tested for activation of basolateral membrane K+ conductance by depolarization or by elevation of intracellular Ca2+ and for tetraethylammonium sensitivity of the basolateral membrane voltage and fractional resistance. The results were negative, indicating that maxi-K+ channels are not expressed in the basolateral membrane of the "intact" epithelium. Using the same intracellular-microelectrode protocol on the apical membrane, we demonstrated the presence of an apical K+ conductance attributable to maxi-K+ channels. Additional experiments revealed a Ba(2+)-sensitive basolateral K+ conductance in the native epithelium. We conclude that in the stripped preparation there is artifactual expression of maxi-K+ channels. In addition, the native basolateral membrane K+ channels either are not expressed in this preparation or have a low conductance and cannot be discerned from the background noise.

Abstract. This study describes the appearance of ultrafine boundary layer aerosol particles under classical “non-favourable” conditions at the research site of TROPOS (Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research). Airborne measurements of meteorological and aerosol properties of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) were repeatedly performed with the unmanned aerial system ALADINA (Application of Light-weight Aircraft for Detecting IN-situ Aerosol) during three seasons between October 2013 and July 2015. More than 100 measurement flights were conducted on 23 different days with a total flight duration of 53 h. In 26 % of the cases, maxima of ultrafine particles were observed close to the inversion layer at altitudes between 400 and 600 m and the particles were rapidly mixed vertically and mainly transported downwards during short time intervals of cloud gaps. This study focuses on two measurement days affected by low-level stratocumulus clouds, but different wind directions (NE, SW) and minimal concentrations (< 4.6 µg m−3) of SO2, as a common indicator for precursor gases at ground. Taken from vertical profiles, the onset of clouds led to a non-linearity of humidity that resulted in an increased turbulence at the local-scale and caused fast nucleation (e.g. Bigg, 1997; Wehner et al., 2010), but in relation to rapid dilution of surrounding air, seen in sporadic clusters of ground data, so that ultrafine particles disappeared in the verticality. The typical “banana shape” (Heintzenberg et al., 2007) of new particle formation (NPF) and growth was not seen at ground and thus these days might not have been classified as NPF event days by pure surface studies.

Acompanhando as mudanças políticos da região e ao que se há intitula “Giro à esquerda (Sanajuha 2012; Celi 2012) autores de distintas expertises e localidades têm trabalhado não somente em compreender estas mudanças em termos de políticas regionais, mas também categorizá-los. Dois enfoques provenientes, em boa parte da própria região, que tem alcançado grande repercussão, são o Regionalismo Pós-Neoliberal (Motta Veiga y Rios 2007) o Regionalismo Pós-Hegemónico (Riggirozzi y Tussie 2012) em que al porpor um olhar sobre a regionalidade, abriram espaços pelos quais se derivaram vários trabalhos que não apenas utilizam e reforçam estes conceitos, como também avançam em áreas como Defesa (Battaglino 2012, Diniz Guerra Silvestre e Winand 2018), Saúde (Herrero e Loza 2014) e Finanças (Briceño-Ruiz e Ribeiro Hoffmann, 2015), além das correntes que se dedicam aos Regionalismos. Entretanto, passado o momento histórico em que os drivers (Borzel 2015) nos quais esta mudança se insere, quais são os pilares de sustento que se debilitaram e quais seguem mantendo os dois enfoques mencionados? Por exemplo, ambos permitem pensar, como sugere Comini (2016) que fomos “sulamericanizados”, e, claro, não só as forças políticas de los países que “lideraram” este movimento merecem ser estudados (Nolte, Flemes e Wehner 2011), mas também o papel que as construções teóricas possuem, neste sentido. Two Guatemalan-West Indian avocado (Persea americana) hybrids (‘Monroe’ and ‘Booth 8’) were treated with an aqueous formulation of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to determine effects on ripening and quality during storage simulating commercial shipping temperatures. Fruit harvested at preclimacteric stage were immersed in aqueous 1-MCP at 75 μg·L−1 (1.39 mmol·m−3) or in deionized water for 1 minute, stored at 10 °C for 14 days, and then transferred to 20 °C until ripe. Respiration rate, ethylene production, softening, and change in epidermal hue* angle were delayed and/or suppressed in both cultivars exposed to 1-MCP, although effects were less pronounced with Booth 8. Hue* angles for 1-MCP-treated ‘Monroe’ fruit had the highest values (darkest green peel color) of all treatments at full-ripe stage (hue* angle = 117). For control and treated ‘Monroe’ fruit respiration peaked on days 15 and 21, while ethylene production from both treatments peaked on day 16. Respiration and ethylene production peaked on day 16 for both control and 1-MCP–treated ‘Booth 8’ fruit. Fruit treated with 1-MCP consistently showed diminished respiration and ethylene peaks. Days to full-ripe stage were unaffected by treatment. ‘Booth 8’ fruit from both treatments were considered ripe (15 N whole fruit firmness) after 17 days; however, only 8% of control fruit were marketable, whereas 58% of 1-MCP-treated fruit were marketable, based on subjective appearance ratings using the Jenkins–Wehner score. The development of peel blemishes during storage was the primary cause of unmarketable fruit. ‘Monroe’ control and 1-MCP–treated fruit were soft after about 22 days and were significantly more marketable (control 70% and 1-MCP 85%). Avocados treated with 1-MCP ripened over a longer period than control fruit but maintained a higher percentage of marketable fruit.
