Abstract:
Staring Wei Jie to Death uses the notion of evocation to give musical form to a peculiar story from ancient China. Wei Jie is a historical figure who served as a court official under the Jin dynasty during the late 3rd to early 4th centuries C.E. The Book of Jin relates that he was legendary even in his own time for his astonishing physical beauty, and that it proved to be the cause of his death. For when the Jin empire was threatened by barbarian invaders, Wei Jie fled south, to the city known today as Nanjing; there, people were so eager to catch a glimpse of his unearthly beauty that a crow

Abstract:
Although the Zhuangzi is mentioned in late Warring States and Han Dynasty texts, it was in the post-Han Wei-Jin period that it first exerted a significant influence on intellectual life, becoming a central target for both praise and criticism, much of which focused on its transcendent attitude toward Confucian social values and secular interests. This paper examines these discussions, focusing on criticisms from the pragmatically minded realist Confucian literati of the period, who largely regarded the text as detaching and distracting scholars from the pressing needs of the state and response

This paper aims to re-examine the contents of the Biaoqiang Zhong (羌鐘), by comparing and analysing the Qinghua Bamboo Slip’s Xinian with the Biaoqiang Zhong (羌鐘) of the Eastern Zhou period. The Biaoqiang Zhong (羌鐘) is a bronze inscription from the Jin lineage of the Warring States period, and this paper focuses on the controversial part of it and tries to reinterpret it by comparing it with the Qinghua Bamboo Slip’s Xinian. The results of this study show that the inscription 'wei ershi you zai si(唯廿又再祀)' in the Biaoqiang Zhong (羌鐘) corresponds to the 22nd year of King Wei Lie of the Zh

Abstract:
The pattern “NP1, NP2 + shi ye”, as found in the Chinese translations of Buddhist texts in the Han Dynasty, is not a direct imitation of, or derivation from, the pattern “NP1, NP2 (Subj) + shi (Pron) ye” of the pre-Qin era. Rather, it comes from the pattern “NP1, NP2 (Predicate N) + shi (Copula)” of the Western Han, Eastern Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties periods. In the Chinese Buddhist translations of the Han Dynasty, “NP1, NP2 + shi” is a variant of “NP1, NP2 + shi ye”. The copious use of the two grammatical patterns in the Chinese translations is not intended to render t

The study on sources of the Legend of the White Snake varies from scholar to scholar. It can be culturally related to the Chinese culture of evil spirits. Its elements were dispersedly shown in the Tang Legends and earlier Wei-Jin Mystery novels but never integrated into a complete story or text. Most scholars believe that the text of the White Snake was established in the script of Ming dynasty and developed in the opera of the Qing dynasty. There is a great difference between the text in Song and Ming dynasty and that in Qing dynasty and the source of the added plots such as “stealing a magi

While the body relates to force by its strength and functionality, the Taiji body, is considered to be instilled with dongjin, and perceives the force associated with jin (劲) as “soft” (rou) and “hard” (gang), which correspond to the vector quantities of the force, namely, directi

The Medieval China is a “Manuscript era”. The four divisions of Jing, Shi, Zi, Ji, and the documents of Buddhism and Taoism, all have to be considered based on this general background. For the first part of this paper, the keyword used in the comparison with “Buddhism” in the Medieval China is “Confucianism” rather than “Confucian classics”. Then, the concept and classification of Jiyi (collection of the lost parts of classics) are explained.
