Abstract Let χ be an additive character of F q and let L(x) be a linearized polynomial over F qn. In this paper, we consider the Weil sums of quadratic functions, namely, ∑ x ∈ F q n χ ( T r( χ L ( χ ) ) . Quadratic Weil sum is a critical topic in number theory and has applications in sequence design, coding, and cryptography. The computation of a quadratic Weil sum is complicated and sometimes impractical. This paper introduces a novel and generic way of computing quadratic Weil sums, which allows us to deal with the computation more efficiently compared with previous methods. As a result, we

The equations to generate a J-R curve from a four-point bend test on circumferentially cracked pipe have been known for many years. Given the experimental pipe load-displacement record and crack growth, the only impediment to routinely calculating pipe J-R curves is the requirement to know the non-cracked pipe elastic and plastic displacements. Traditionally, finite element analyses are used to find these displacements. Abstract:
Thermal embrittlement of cast austenitic stainless steels (CASS) occurs at reactor operating temperatures during the reactor design lifetime of 40 years leading to a reduction in their toughness and an increase in strength. Additionally most US nuclear plants have been given plant life extensions for 60-year operation, and consideration of further extension to 80 years is underway. As the fracture toughness reduces due to thermal embrittlement, some aged CASS materials have the potential to have exceedingly low toughness. CASS can also show high toughness variability due to the variability of

This paper outlines a methodology used to conduct a SEN(T) fracture test and discusses the analysis procedure used to obtain J-R and CTOD-R resistance curves from the experimental data. The CTOD-R curve depicts the change in toughness with crack growth, in a manner similar to the J-R curve methodology. Significant crack growth can arise from the start of ductile tearing to maximum load in the case of surface-cracked pipes with heavier-wall piping used in recent designs of natural gas pipelines that are required to handle greater pressures and much lower temperatures. CTOD-R curves provide toug

Abstract:
Continuum damage mechanics is applied from specimen to component level to compute fracture behaviour. The computed parameters are load-displacement and J-Δa curves. A parametric study is done to show the effect of variation of f0 and fn on J-R curve. It is suggested to use a variation of q2 parameter near crack tip instead of a constant value in Gurson constitutive model. Such variation helps to obtain Jinitiation as well as complete J-R curve in close agreement with experimental values. The Gurson material parameters obtained from specimen level analyses are then used to analyze reactor grade

Abstract:
To assess the integrity of pipelines containing cracks, single edge-notched tension (SENT) specimens in the end-clamped conditions have been widely adopted in the oil and gas industry to measure fracture toughness or resistance curves in terms of the J-integral or crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD). The CTOD toughness is often utilized in the strain-based design, and thus its measurement is important to the pipeline industry. Two types of CTOD-R curve test methods are available for a single SENT specimen test: J-conversion method and double clip gage (DCG) measurement method. However, these

Research activities in both our laboratories were directed toward development of control of the FLP/frt recombination system for plants. As described in the text of the research proposal, the US lab has been engaged in developing regulatory strategies such as tissue-specific promoters and the steroid-inducible activation of the FLP enzyme while the main research activities in Israel have been directed toward the development and testing of a copper-regulated expression of flp recombinase in tobacco (this is an example of a promoter activation by metal ions).
