Abstract:
I thank Laurel Weldon for her generous and incisive review of my book. Our two books share a common interest in investigating the mechanisms through which marginalized constituencies gain voice in politics. While my book takes a micro, individual perspective, focusing on questions about participation in American politics, Weldon's takes a macro perspective, analyzing the impact of social movements and movement organizations in a comparative context. Thus, while I try to understand the factors that motivate individuals from traditionally marginalized communities to get involved, she asks what happens when they do get involved: Does their participation in movements and movement organizations matter? These divergent perspectives contextualize some of the very helpful questions Weldon raised about my book.

Abstract:
John Weldon (1676-1736) was 'Composer to the Chapel Royal' from 1708/9 until his death. As such he was a highly regarded member of an elite musical institution in early eighteenthcentury England. Over the last quarter century or so, musicological studies in this area have largely concentrated on the canonic figures of Purcell and Handel, leaving something of a terra incognita as regards the music of their contemporaries. Recent studies in the field of theatre music have begun to address this gap and there has been some limited renewed interest in the music of William Croft, Weldon's contemporary, also a Composer to the Chapel Royal. This study further addresses this lacuna by providing the first complete critical edition of Weldon's sacred work, much of which is unpublished and is edited here for the first time. Of particular interest are several substantive verse anthems; not one example of these important contributions to the repertory of the Chapel Royal in the early eighteenth century has previously been printed. The introduction to the edition comprises five chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 contextualise the music through a thorough re-examination of Weldon's biography and a consideration of the Chapel Royal in which the music was performed, respectively. Chapter 3 provides, for the first time, a proposed chronological catalogue of his sacred music followed by an in-depth stylistic assessment of that music. Chapter 4 provides two case studies of compositional practices that result in either new versions of extant anthems that exist alongside previous versions, or revisions by the composer that supersede the previous material. Performance issues themselves are explored not only through Notes on Performance (addressing issues such as tempo, ornamentation and voice type), but also through a detailed study in Chapter 5 of accompanimental practice as deduced from the extant primary source material.

Alexander, Robyn Gaye. "Body/sexuality/control : female identity in four Fay Weldon novels." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20451.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 154-163.<br>This thesis explores the manner in which female identity is depicted and the concept itself deployed in four novels by Fay Weldon (1931- ), a contemporary English writer. The novels examined are Puffball (1980), The President's Child (1982), The Cloning of Joanna May (1989) and Growing Rich (1992). The thesis's· theoretical focus is feminist, and it makes use of terms, arguments and insights provided by contemporary feminist literary and cultural theory. It thus in part also explores the usefulness of insights provided by recent feminist poststructuralist theory, with particular reference to psychoanalytic theory. On the whole, these insights are found to be useful, even though they do not entirely answer some of the questions generated by the possibilities which are shown to exist for female subjects within western culture. The thesis's conclusion suggests ways in which this lack of definitive answers might in its turn be interpreted. The first chapter, dealing with Puffball, examines the novel's depiction of the effects of pregnancy on a woman's body and in turn on her sense of her own identity. This is followed by a chapter on The Cloning of Joanna May, which also takes female experience of the maternal as its central focus. This chapter shows how Weldon investigates current meanings of birth, children, identity and the natural via a plot concerned with the uses and abuses of contemporary reproductive technologies. A short chapter on Weldon's prose style, which is seen to manipulate aspects of form in order to generate particular effects, follows. In it, the current reception of Weldon's work and her use of humour in her writing is commented upon. This chapter also anticipates the question of the use of narrative voice, which is crucial to the novels dealt with in the final two chapters. In the first of these, which explores Growing Rich, the manner in which masculine power is shown to impact on the bodies of the two central female characters is central. Like the final chapter on The President's Child, this chapter also deals with the narrator's use of narrative as vehicle for both the stories of the female characters which she relates and for her own story. The final chapter focuses on the increasingly open conflict which Weldon depicts between male and female power, and also explores how the public/private division central to western culture is disrupted in this novel. Throughout the thesis, an attempt is made to show how female identity is at present constructed for and by western women: via their own and others' representations of their bodies and their sexuality, and as a concept over which they have varying degrees of control. It concludes that the often contradictory fictional representations of female subjectivity in the four novels under discussion suggest the constraints and difficulties involved in attempts to create new visions of female bodies, sexualities and identities. However, these depictions of such experiences are in addition shown to suggest the possibility of new and different representations.

Abstract:
This research project was initiated to determine if using place-based educational strategies had increased students' understanding and attitude while studying specific science topics. During the nine-week study, I used a variety of place-based educational approaches to teach students about ecosystems, biomes (large scale ecosystems), and weather and climate. I applied several qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments during the treatment period. Quantifiable data collected showed evidence that growth in conceptual understanding and students' ability to transfer and apply knowledge of place to areas of greater geographic distance had occurred. Qualitative statements revealed a positive increase in students' attitude and interest towards science lessons during the implementation of place-based methods. As a result of this study, it was concluded that the use of place-based educational strategies while teaching specific science themes does enhance students' understanding and attitude toward the learning of science concepts.

Weldon, Ché. "Chytridiomycosis, an emerging infectious disease of amphibians in South Africa / C. Weldon." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/860.

Full text
Abstract:
The sudden appearance of chytridiomycosis, as the cause of amphibian deaths and population declines in several continents suggests that its etiological agent, the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, was introduced into the affected regions. However, the origin of this virulent pathogen is unknown. Efforts were directed to determine the occurrence of chytridiomycosis in Africa, whether the disease had been introduced into South Africa in recent years and how wild frog populations were affected by infection. A chytridiomycosis survey of 2,300 archived and live specimens involving members of the Pipidae family in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as a number of unrelated frog species in South Africa was conducted by histological diagnosis of skin samples. The epidemiological evidence indicated that chytridiomycosis has been a stable endemic infection in southern Africa for 23 years before any positive specimens were found outside Africa. The occurrence of chytridiomycosis in South Africa can be described as widespread both in terms of geographical distribution and host species and generally infection is not associated with adverse effects at the individual or population level. It was proposed that the amphibian chytrid originated in Africa and that the international trade in the African clawed toad Xenopus laevis that commenced in the mid 1930s was the means of dissemination. A risk assessment of the X. laevis trade demonstrated that chytridiomycosis could spread through this pathway and culminated in the development of a management protocol to reduce the risks of spreading disease through this animate commodity. Initial comparative genetic analysis of B. dendrobatidis strains isolated from South African frogs with a global set of 35 strains, suggests that analysis of a more geographically diverse set of southern African strains is needed before this line of argument can support or reject the "out of Africa" hypothesis.<br>Thesis (Ph.D. (Zoology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Abstract:
Down Among the Women (1972), Female Friends (1974), and Remember Me (1976), three of Fay Weldons early novels, share similar themes, narrative voices, and stylistic elements. Although the novels explore different aspects of womens lives, the similarities call for a study of Weldons early techniques and contribution to twentieth-century literature. I study Weldons early works to reveal her belief that feminism evolved through small, individual changes rather than general societal upheaval. I center my study on motherhood and wifehood in Down Among the Women, friendship in Female Friends, and motherhood in Remember Me. In each novel, women make changes in these specific areas of their lives, and through these changes, Weldon rewrites traditional women as newly defined feminists. My readings of each novel support my contention that although the women are not reformed in every facet of their lives, Weldon defines them as feminists because they have actively redefined at least one firmly rooted feminine role to benefit themselves.

Johnson, Heather L. "'Her lion-red body, her wings of glass' : iconography of the Gothic body in Carter, Tennant, and Weldon." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26648.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the varied references to the gothic genre in the work of three contemporary British women writers: Angela Carter, Emma Tennant, and Fay Weldon. It illustrates that the use of gothic imagery in their fiction concedes with feminist revisions of representations of the female body and that this appearance of the gothic is more complex than the scope generally allowed by the critical term "Female Gothic". Whereas most critical approaches to the gothic are grounded in a depth hermeneutics, this thesis develops Sedgwick's attention to the surfaces of gothic imagery by focusing on the iconography manifest in representations of the female body. The novels under consideration increase the possibilities of the genre through a combination of traditional and innovative gothic tropes. Such innovation is achieved through postmodernist conventions including the use of genre fragments, intertexuality, and pastiche, as well as the self-conscious invocation of modern theories of identity. Most significant is the practice of transforming metaphor into narrative, whereby static culture images depicting the female body are mobilised in an exposure of their inherent humour and violence, the nexus of which is characteristically gothic. In this literature, three female figures may be discerned which are identifiable as gothic in their expression of entrapment both within the body and within a practical system of cultural representation, and thus focus a number of feminist and postructuralist concerns. The figure of the 'chokered' woman is read through a feminist critique of the gendered mind/body dichotomy central to Western culture. Next the presentation and subversion of the black female body is discussed as a figure of erotic alterity and the abject within colonialist discourse. The 'posthuman' body is explored as a product of the contemporary age of simulation and technological innovation, and is positioned in relation to the poetics of camp and the postructuralist notion of the spectral presence of absence. In this fiction the female body functions as a 'screen' onto which these writers project their diverse inscriptions of the gothic.

Given the current interest in the writings of themselves construction, due to the proliferation of its manifestations which are in constant reinvention process, we discuss in this dissertation the novel The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man written by James Weldon Johnson, issued anonymously in 1912. vi, 63 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number.<br>In 1927, James Weldon Johnson published God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse, a book of poems based on sermons heard in the African American Church. There are eight accompanying illustrations by Aaron Douglas. These images visually interpret the subject matter of the poems in a style that blends Cubism, Orphism, and Art Deco. Douglas depicted all the figures in these images, human and supernatural, in the form of shadow silhouettes, a stylistic practice he continued throughout his artistic career. The shadow is an ancient archetype in human mythology and psychology. This thesis looks at the depiction of shadows in a Jungian context. I explore the possibility that the use of the shadow allows deeper communication between the audience and the image by accessing the collective unconscious. I also examine the shadow as a metaphor for the socio-political oppression of African Americans rampant in the period between the wars.<br>Committee in Charge: Dr. W. Abstract:
AbstractThe production of tubular-node-connections, which are required for the construction of offshore wind energy plants or converter platforms, is subject to high manufacturing standards. The welding process is currently carried out manually and requires a great deal of experience on the part of the welder. In this process, one or more branch member pipes are welded to a base pipe, which vary in their diameters and alignment to each other. This results in a small batch size for which no standard automation solution can be considered. The approach of a pre-defined offline path-planning is not expedient, since the weld metal forms differently with the multiple curved geometries and the desired target result cannot be achieved with an integrated compensation. The approach for automation combines the experience of a skilled welder with the accuracy of an industrial-robot. For implementation, the robot system moves along the welding contour with a 2D-profile sensor. The joint profile is recorded at defined measurement points. Parallel to the seam cross-section, the current gradient of the geometry in relation to the horizontal plane is stored. After all the information has been generated, it is visualized for the operator in a graphical user interface. The operator can use his experience in the field of welding technology and can carry out the positioning of the weld seam in every single scan generated. The decisions on positioning are stored in the system and serve as a base for a future implementation of an automatic system for positioning welding beads on multi-curved contours.

The outer can welder (OCW) in the FB-Line Facility at the Savannah River Site (SRS) is a Gas Tungsten Arc Weld (GTAW) system used to create outer canisters compliant with the Department of Energy 3013 Standard, DOE-STD-3013-2000, Stabilization, Packaging, and Storage of Plutonium-Bearing Materials. The key welding parameters controlled and monitored on the outer can welder Data Acquisition System (DAS) are weld amperage, weld voltage, and weld rotational speed. Inner 3013 canisters from the Bagless Transfer System that contain plutonium metal or plutonium oxide are placed inside an outer 3013 canister. The canister is back-filled with helium and welded using the outer can welder. The completed weld is screened to determine if it is satisfactory by reviewing the OCW DAS key welding parameters, performing a helium leak check, performing a visual examination by a qualified weld inspector, and performing digital radiography of the completed weld. Canisters with unsatisfactory welds are cut open and repackaged. Canisters with satisfactory welds are deemed compliant with the 3013 standard for long-term storage.

Abstract:
Ultrasonic metal welding (USW) is a promising joining method for aluminum automotive body construction applications. During USW, aluminum weldments are joined together by applying high frequency vibrations while holding the parts together with a moderate clamping force. In an effort to further the development of USW for high volume robotic body construction applications, a reliability and maintainability study was performed using a robotic welding cell installed in the Ford Research and Innovation Center. The robot was equipped with a modified Sonobond ultrasonic metal welder, which was mounted on a C-frame. The study consisted of welding fully overlapped 550 mm × 350 mm × 0.9mm thick AA6111-T4 aluminum panels with 330 welds on each panel until 100,000 welds were made. Consistency in welder operation was monitored by welding fully overlapped AA6111-T4 aluminum strips (25mm wide × 550 mm long × 0.9mm thick) at the end of each day’s welding and then tensile testing the strips in a T-peel configuration. There was no statistical difference in average T-peel strength over the course of the 100,000 weld study. There was also no degradation noted in lap shear failure loads between samples welded at the end of the 100,000 weld study and those generated before initiation of the study. Reliability of the USW process during this study was monitored by periodic inspection of the robot and welder joints, attachments, fittings, tip, anvil, clamps, cables, etc. Only very minor wear of the welder tip and anvil contact surfaces were noted after the study was completed. However, during the study, after 82,000 welds a small piece of aluminum was removed from between the tip grooves, even though the weld strength was unaffected by the presence of the aluminum. There were no failures of any mechanical or electrical parts during the study. In addition, primary voltage and current signals of the ultrasonic welder’s power controller were periodically recorded during the weld study and it was determined that there was no change in the electrical behavior of the welder.

Abstract:
Girth welds of X80 high deformability pipeline were welded by self-shield flux-cored arc weld (FCAW) and manual shield-metal arc weld (SMAW). The FCAW used E9018-G electrode to weld root and under-matched flux-cored wires to fill welding and cap welding. The SMAW also used the same welding consumable to weld root, but the metal of the filler welding and cap welding is overmatched electrodes. The mechanical properties testing and metallography testing of girth welded joints were carried out. It was found that the qualifications of two welding procedures met the requirements of API Std. 1104. The test results of Charpy impact (CVN) and crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) of welded joints for FCAW were higher than that of welded joints for SMAW. The microstructures of FCAW welds were polygonal ferrite (PF) and pearlite (P). But the microstructures of SMAW welds were polygonal ferrite (PF), intra-granular nucleated acicular ferrite (IAF) and pearlite (P). The microstructures of fusion zones are granular bainitic ferrite (GBF), and that there is no martensite in coarse grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ) and fine grain heat affected zone (FGHAZ). So heat affected zone (HAZ) exhibited excellent fracture toughness.

Abstract:
The X80 girth welds were produced by solid-wire gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and shield metal arc welding (SMAW) using two welding consumables respectively, which contained different mass fraction of C, Mo and Ni. The tensile properties, notch toughness, hardness, and microstructures of welded joints were evaluated. The results indicate that high strength and good toughness of welded joints can be achieved. But the tensile properties of all weld metal of GMAW and SMAW process were evidently different because of the difference of mass fraction of C, Mo, Ni. The strength reduced slightly in softening zone of HAZ. Using welding consumable which contain higher Mo additions, the microstructure in weld seam and fusion zones were IAF+GB and GB+M respectively. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of X80 pipeline welded by single wire welding and double wire welding respectively have been compared. The double wire welds exhibited lower yield strength but higher toughness compared to the corresponding single wire welds.

Abstract:
&lt;p&gt;The U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joint in orthotropic steel deck is a part with multiple fatigue cracks. The penetration rate which is the ratio of penetration depth to U-shaped rib thickness has an important influence on fatigue performance of partial joint penetration (PJP) welds. In this study, the influence of penetration rate on the fatigue performance of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints was studied. Firstly, the finite element model of U-shaped rib-to-deck welded joints with penetration rate of 65%, 75%, 85% and complete joint penetration (CJP) welds were established. The mechanical characteristics of different welding forms under typical loading conditions were analyzed. It was found that with the increase of penetration rate of PJP welds, the stress concentration at the weld root weakened. Then fatigue tests on specimens with different weld penetration rate were carried out. The fatigue cracks of CJP welds all started at the inner welding toe of the U-shaped rib. However, the fatigue cracks of PJP welds mainly started at the welding root of the unfused weld. Fatigue S-N curves for PJP and CJP were regressed, respectively, it could be found that the fatigue performance of CJP welds was superior to that of PJP welds.&lt;/p&gt;

Abstract:
When weld defects are found by inspection after welding, repair welding after removing the defects is performed. The partial repair welding has a possibility to make weld residual stress distribution complicated. In this study, we have performed thermal-elastic-plastic analyses to evaluate the weld residual stress produced by repair welding after piping butt-welding. The analysis results were validated by the comparison with measurements. From the analysis results with varying the repair welding conditions, we also performed structural integrity assessments related to stress corrosion cracking using probabilistic fracture mechanics analysis code PASCAL-SP. It was clearly shown that tensile stress in repair-welded region was increased and compressive stresses occurred outside the repair-welded region. Deeper mechanical cutting depth caused larger increases in tensile residual stress of repair-welded region. It was also clarified that partial repair welding might have a beneficial influence on the break probability of piping welds.

Abstract:
Welding remains the key process in fabricating, as well as repairing, pressure vessel systems. Unfortunately, many manufacturing and through life service problems occur in or near welded regions. The through life integrity of welded components, e.g. distortion, fatigue, fracture, metallurgy and corrosion control remains a key challenge for structural integrity. The work reported in this paper investigates the complex manufacture and assembly of a pressure vessel toroidal seal. The seal is first created by depositing a series of austenitic welds onto a ferritic pressure vessel to build up a plinth, thus forming a transition weld. The transition weld is then subject to a high temperature Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) to stress relieve the welds and to temper the HAZ in the welds. An austenitic toroidal ring is positioned onto the plinths and welded in place thus forming the toroidal seal. The seal is manufactured from a 347 austenitic stainless steel comprising good ductility and corrosion resistance. The manufacture of the seal is simulated using 2D axisymmetric finite element analysis that are available to support both the design and integrity analysis of welded components. As well as the inherent residual stresses associated with welding, additional effects are important, for instance the austenitic to ferritic transition welds between the vessel body and plinths. This paper presents a novel approach to the simulation of weld metal deposition that is ideally suited to the modelling of transition welds and subsequent PWHT. The plinth welds undergo PWHT and so the creep behaviour of the welds is simulated. A series of intermittent as well as end of manufacture PWHT’s are investigated. Additionally the choice of material hardening law for the austenic weldment is studied. The full manufacturing history of the seal is taken into account within the analysis including welding, component machining and component geometry fit up.

Abstract:
Large scale fabrication and welding industries, such as those involved in offshore construction, are continuously striving to improve productivity, while maintaining quality levels required by the applicable design codes and standards. To achieve this, new improved welding technologies are regularly being evaluated. One area of development is to combine different welding processes to produce a welded joint exhibiting properties and productivity benefits that neither process could achieve individually. One promising combination is the use of both arc and laser beam welding for products such as pipeline. The welding procedure development work described, was carried out in two stages. Stage 1 (discrete dual processing) investigated the production of a welded joint using both arc and laser welding at separate times. The welds produced for this work, demonstrate that significant increases in welding speed are achievable in comparison to using either process individually. Stage 2 (simultaneous dual processing) investigated arc and laser welding of the joint at the same time from opposing plate faces, with the laser weld pool trailing the arc weld pool so that the former was positioned in the area of highest preheat temperature. The use of arc preheat significantly reduced the hardness of the laser welds to more acceptable levels. The main disadvantage identified for both stages of work was that fit up of the laser welded part of the joint needed to be good to accommodate the autogenous laser weld. Both Stages were shown to be capable of producing full penetration welds at higher productivity than using either process individually. It has been demonstrated that for 19 mm thick plate, an overall doubling of welding speed could be achieved using dual process as opposed to submerged arc welding, which is currently widely used to weld fabricated products such as pipeline. Future work to be carried will include extensive destructive testing on the welds to assess the benefits of Stage 1 and 2, which will be reported in another paper.
