The presenting thesis is discussed Chung Wen Yin''s “Island Trilogy”: the body is a key point of view by a way to analyze the text. Based on Chung Wen Yin and the describers are females, does it mean that taking back a historical right of speech equals breaking through a frame of patriarchy or having a completely consciousness after reconstructing sights of the city, recording male disease, discussing sexual power and the bodies’ changes? Otherwise, are they still limited? One chapter one book, there are three parts: Decayed Lust is a description of young men and women in Taipei from 1989 to 2006 by using a sensitive sense of young females. And how to picture the power relationship between men and women from their bodies under the raising and bubble economy. Duan Ge Xing is individually described men in Chung’s, Shu Yi Xiao and Liu Yu Shu, who is a local Taiwanese but adopted as a son of mainlanders. The writing style is similar to novels in chapter- many male characters in this book describe the participation in the history process. The author depicts the point in the male body weak. While they all get ill, there is a possibility of entering by medical matters, diet, women, and so on. The third part, Shang Ge Xing, is told by an individual sight of woman in their or others stories repeatedly. The changing and functions of female bodies widens the special space in women, making efforts to defeat against father right.

Chung Wen-Yin, in The Lonely River, tells the story of the common people’s migrating lives of unrest in the 70-80s’ Taiwan, representing the process of social transformation in all aspects and phases, which is full of the nostalgic aura of that period. Based on The Lonely River as a study text, this paper explores the core spirit and artistic characteristics in Chung Wen-Yin’s creative writings. The study consiss of six chapters as follows: The first chapter, “Introduction,” first illustrates the study’s research motivations and objectves. Then Chung Wen-Yin’s identity and her writing process will be described, followed by the present literature review. Also, the research methods and chapter structure will be stated. The second chapter, “Issues of Sexuality in The Lonely River,” is divided into three sections, including “Image creation of men and women,” “Reflection of social gender” and “Uphold the female consciousness.” It focuses on how the novel reflects the era significance through the movement of social gender and cultural change. The third chapter, “Parent’s love in The Lonely River,” will be divided into two sections: “Dialectic on the mother-daughter relationship” and “Contradictory father-daughter relationship.” It analyses how Chung Wen-Yin presents the story of migrant population, the critical changes in family relationship and filiation in the turning era. The fourth chapter, “The Lonely River: Narration of urban and rural,” is divided into two sections, including “Urban and rural temporal thinkings” and “the lost of the ideal family.” This chapter analyses the spacial narrative in the novel, exploring the criticism of urban and rural values from Chung Wen-Yin’s perspectives as well as revealing her contemporaries’ awareness of their lives of unrest. The fifth chapter, “The writing strategy,” consists of two sections: “Form of Mixing” and “Images of Design.” It explores the varied writing patterns and unique imagery aesthetics in The Lonely River. The final chapter, “Conclusions,” summarizes the meaning of creating The Lonely River—to witness the history of social change in Taiwan, which truly shows the features of changing era. Thus, my study expects to prove that The Lonely River is a valuable work of the times.

This thesis commences with the discussion on the background of Chung Wen-yin, the author of Duan Ge Xing, as well as the themes presented in the work. The exploration of time setting and the writer''s growing environment reflects the influence of literary trends and family life on Chung Wen-yin and discloses the motifs she creates in the story. The analysis of portrayals of men in Duan Ge Xing begins with Chung Sheng. His image as a Confucian scholar, who pursues not only inner growth but also a better world for people, is examined by inspecting the depiction of his life. His ideal for Pantisocracy, shown in his implementation of the left-wing social movements, though failed, sets a model for intellectuals. Secondly, the discussion on Chung Liu’s indulgence in material life makes contrast between the distinct life choices made by Chung Sheng and Chung Liu; therefore, Chung Liu’s image as a person who has no fixed values and easily yields himself to life is highlighted. Thirdly, to present different aspects of male life stories, other male characters’ attitudes and reactions to life are classified according to the exploration of their different life choices in the story. With the above discussion, this thesis, in terms of Confucian ethics, observes Chung Sheng and Chung Liu’s choices between realization of the individual and the collective, as well as their different Confucian images. Moreover, the analysis of the text presents various enlightenment conveyed in Chung Wen-yin’s depictions of challenges from both fate and self weakness that male life has to face. That is, Chung Wen-yin’s understanding and sympathy for male life are reflected in her portrayals of different male images and their different attitudes toward life in Duan Ge Xing. With her strong female awareness, keen observation, and perception, Chung Wen-yin portrays how men steer their course of life when facing challenges. Also, by creating a distinct writing prospect while echoing with contemporary female writers’ portrayals of men, Chung Wen-yin shows her unique insight and concern, rendering distinctive value to Duan Ge Xing.

Since the 1960s, Asian American composer Chou, Wen-Chung (1923- ) used the I-Ching philosophy as both his mode of expression and underlying composing principle. From this, he pioneered a unique pitch system, variable modes. Today, this variable mode of thinking continues to influence Asian American composers, calling on them to draw from their "root" culture. As Chou, Wen-Chung says time and time again, "successful composers must acknowledge, appreciate, and reflect on their own culture. This renders their work unique." As such, this thesis will analyze Cursive (1963) by Chou, Wen-Chung from the lens of the variable mode technique. This will shed light on other fundamental elements and parlay into analysis of the work's deeper meaning. This enables an understanding of the Asian spirit behind the essence of the piece: how the composer integrated Asian traditional calligraphy's cursive form with Western musical vocabulary.
