Abstract:
The Kong-zi jia-yu (“School Sayings of Confucius”) is an important historical source for the study of Confucius’ teachings. The text comprises Confucius’ sayings, records of his conversations with his students and other people, and also information regarding his life and deeds. Regardless of the factual cornucopia, the text remains almost completely unknown to Russian scholars. Equally, it has never been translated into Russian. The necessity to translate this historical source into Russian is obvious, at least because of the information regarding the life of Confucius (551–479 BC) and also the theory of his philosophy and belief system. The article offers the initial stage of the study of the Kong-zi jia-yu and comprises the Russian translation of the first two chapters. One of the tasks of the article is the identification of the sources the Kong-zi jia-yu is based upon. The translation is accompanied by the synopsis of the contents of the first five chapters, their composition and a source critical study about the information found in the Kong-zi jia-yu and the ancient Chinese works, such as Chun-qiu Zuo-zhuan, Xun-zi, Li-ji, Da Dai li-ji, Yi-wen-zi, Shuo-yuan. The study has proven that these texts should not be considered as sources of information for the first and second chapters of the Kong-zi jia-yu due to significant differences in detail description. It has been also established that the texts of the third, fourth and fifth chapters, which are philosophical dialogues to a large extent coincide with the chapters of Li-ji (chapters Ai-gong wen, Ru xing) and Da Dai li-ji (chapters Zhu yan, Ai-gong wen yu Kong-zi). However, regardless of these coincidences these texts still should not be considered as direct sources for the relevant chapters from the Kong-zi jia-yu. Most likely, the authors of all three chapters had recourse to the same source.

Abstract:
There are several signs with «diplomatic» semantics among the 540 most ancient radicals of the Chinese writing, presented in the dictionary “Shuo wen jie zi” (1st century AD, Han era). Before the dictionary was created, Chinese writing had already existed for several thousand years; therefore some researchers (Zou Xiaoli, 2007; Oshanin, 1943) consider that the etymologies of the radicals in “Shuo wen” were formulated under the influence of the later eras and are often erroneous. The attempts are made to verify the etymologies of these signs with “diplomatic” semantics by comparing them with the more ancient forms jiaguwen and jinwen, discovered and scientifically described only in the 20th century. Such a comparison and interpretation will reveal the probable correct etymologies of the analyzed radicals of the Chinese dictionary “Shuo wen” and verify them. In addition, the study will shed light on the beginning of diplomacy in ancient China. The article also touches upon the problem of etymological analysis in a language with an ideographic type of writing, which is carried out not at the level of morphology, as in European languages, but at the level of hieroglyphic sign graphics. The problem of semantics and etymology of radicals was considered mainly by Chinese scientists (Zou Xiaoli, 2007; Wang Fengyang, 2011, etc.), while in the European linguistics, the problem was studied only fragmentarily (Kondrashevsky, 1982; Karasyova, 2019; Dictionary of etymologies, 2019). The radicals “with diplomatic” semantics, analyzed in the article, did not become the object of special study. The purpose of the article is to verify the etymology of a number of radicals in the ancient Chinese dictionary “Shuo wen jie zi” with “diplomatic” semantics, to consider the information about the dictionary “Shuo wen jie zi”, its basic radicals and their semantics, to briefly describe the features of etymological analysis in general and in Chinese language in particular, to compare the definitions of these radicals in various etymological dictionaries, thus verifying the etymologies presented in the dictionary “Shuo wen jie zi”.

Abstract:
The article presents the main provisions of the theory of thesaurus-type dictionaries, gives definitions of the thesaurus, describes the relationship of the thesaurus with the type of writing, considers the main provisions of the Sapir-Whorf theory of l inguistic relativity and their connection with the way of thinking and methods of conceptualizing extra-linguistic reality by representatives of different ethnic cultures. The authors propose the thesaurus of ideographic writing as one of the models of ethnocognitive science and, using the example of the dictionary “Shuo wen jie zi”, substantiate the expediency of using the term “ethnothesaurus”.

Abstract This chapter surveys the development of new ideas about nature, the universe, and the human body in ancient China, focusing on the period between the fifth century bce and the second century ce. It focuses in particular on cosmogony (the study of the origins of the universe) and cosmology, astrology and the calendar, and medicine, as well as developments in mathematics, music, and geography. It charts the development of correlative cosmology, focusing on the notion of qi as the fundamental stuff of the cosmos, and how it went through processes based on cycles of yin and yang. It surveys the contributions of leading figures such as Zi Wei, Shi Shen, and Chunyu Yi.

Abstract:
This study is an investigation of the complement constructions of manner and state (CM/S, e.g. ta de zi xie de hao‘s/he writes character well’) based on a corpus of written Chinese. We find that CM/S have preferred forms and functions. Formally speaking, a monosyllabic verb, preferably bian ‘change, become’, basic action verbs, or psychological state verbs tend to co-occur with complements of adjectival, clausal, or idiomatic expressions. CM/S are argued to be an assessment device indexing speaker evaluative stances. The loaded affective meanings, we contend, account for the larger and more complex forms than their standard assessment counterparts. The implications of these findings on Chinese syntactic research and on L2 learning are explored.

Abstract:
Although self-directed learning as a theory has been popularized in Western cultures, especially North America, it is in Confucius-Heritage Societies (CHS) that it has been well implemented. Western scholars who are exploring learning modes in different cultures have become interested in how the Chinese self-practice or self-learning has contributed more to high cognitive skills or higher test scores than other factors such as teaching to tests or teacher-centered instruction as heavily emphasized by educators and parents in CHS countries. Rather than teaching our scholars/readers Chinese characters such as Zi Xi, ??, these two characters imply a Western learning mode that leads to good learning if used positively and effectively in any culture. As globalization brings different cultures together, there is a great deal that we can learn from other cultures. We should guard against “ethnocentrism” if we are to promote good learning in our schools. This is explored in this chapter.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the notions of impermanence and death as treated in the Chinese and Japanese philosophical traditions, particularly in connection with the Buddhist concept of emptiness and void and the original Daoist answers to the problem. Methodological problems are mentioned and two ways of approaching the theme are proposed: the logically discursive and the meditative mystical one, with the two symbols of each, Uroboros and the open circle. The switch of consciousness is suggested as an essential condition for liberation of the Ego and its illusions. Rational logic as well as the sophisticated meditative ways of selflessness and detachment are suggested when treating the Chinese and Japanese philosophical notions, and examples of the discussed topics from the texts given. The instructive seventh chapter of the classical Daoist work, Lie Zi, is analyzed in detail and put into contrast with the answers given to that problem in the Greco-Judeo-Christian tradition.

Full text
Abstract:
We now move on to the next obstacle to understanding how the boundary layer behaves in general through the study of flow over ridges and hills. In Chapter 4 we examined simple changes in surface conditions and showed how their effects extend upwards with increasing downwind distance. The distinguishing features of the flow over those changes were a small perturbation in the pressure field and an internal boundary layer, the depth of which was controlled by turbulent diffusion from the new surface. Here, we confront not a change in surface properties but a change in surface elevation that forces large-scale changes in the pressure field. The response to this forcing is more complicated than any we have tackled so far, but the work of many scientists over the past 25 years gives us a measure of understanding of the processes involved. In addition to extending to hillsides the kind of analyses of wind and turbulence we have already presented, there are new questions that only arise in the context of hill flows. One, with ramifications for large-scale prediction of the weather and climate, is how much drag hills exert on the atmosphere flowing over them. For large hills and mountains this problem is dominated by the behavior of the internal gravity waves initiated by hills; over lower topography, however, it involves a subtle balance between changes in the surface stress distribution and the pressure field. In questions of wind turbine siting, understanding the position and magnitude of accelerations in the mean wind becomes crucial, whereas changes to both the mean wind and turbulence are important when predicting the fate of atmospheric pollutants in hilly terrain or estimating wind loads on buildings. The pattern of airflow around a hill is determined not only by the hill shape but also by its size. A characteristic feature of the atmosphere as a whole is its static stability, extending all the way to the ground at night-time and down to zi during the day. As a result, the vertical movement of air parcels that must occur as the wind flows over a hill is accompanied by a gravitational restoring force.

Abstract:
A marketer should follow the maxim of the 4th century BC strategist Sun-zi, who said “Know self, know opponents, hundred battles, hundred victories.” We are the chemical processing industries (CPI), which is a collection of firms that manufacture and sell a range of products that involve chemistry and employ many chemical engineers. The buyers are consumers, businesses, governments, and foreigners. When we consider selling a product to a buyer, we pay particular attention to profitable and growing markets where our product has a relative advantage over competition. It takes a bold pioneer to introduce a new product that requires the creation of a new market. Let us study the sellers of chemical products, which are collectively called the CPI. These manufacturers are skilled in the use of chemical reactions and separations to make their products, and they employ many chemical engineers and chemists, often in highly responsible positions. Many of the firms in the CPI are also our suppliers of raw materials and intermediates, our customers for our products, and our competition in making and selling their products. The Statistical Abstract of the United States is published annually by the U.S. Census Bureau, which groups all the economic activities in the United States into 11 divisions by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). The manufacturing division is divided into 20 sections designated by two-digit numbers. The manufacturers that involve chemistry intensively are listed in table 9.1, by two 2-digit numbers, such as: 20 Food, 28 Chemicals, and 29 Petroleum Refining. The table lists the number of establishments, the number of employees and value of shipment in 1996. The SIC 28, “Chemical and Allied Products,” is the basic supplying industry to the other sectors. Table 9.1 also gives the subdivision of SIC 28 into three-digit subsectors, such as: 281 Industrial Inorganics, 283 Drugs, and 286 Industrial Organics. The subsectors of 281 and 286 form the core of the Chemical and Allied Products, as they provide raw material and intermediates for the rest of the subsectors, such as 282 Plastics and 287 Agricultural chemicals.

Abstract:
Two important applications of the SRF concept developed in chapter 2 are point estimation and image simulation. Point estimation considers the SRF Z at an unsampled location, x0, and the goal is to get an estimate for z at x0 which is physically plausible and is optimal in some sense, and to provide a measure of the quality of the estimate. The goal in image simulation is to create an image of Z over the entire domain, one that not only is in agreement with the measurements at their locations, but also captures the correlation pattern of z. We start by considering a family of linear estimators known as kriging. Its appeal is in its simplicity and computational efficiency. We then proceed to discuss Bayesian estimators and will show how to condition estimates on “hard” and “soft” data, and we shall conclude by discussing a couple of simple, easy-to-implement image simulators. One of the simulators presented can be downloaded from the Internet. Linear regression aims at estimating the attribute z at x0: z0 = z(x0), based on a linear combination of n measurements of z: zi = z(xi), i = 1 , . . . ,n. The estimator of z(x0) is z*0, and it is defined by What makes this estimator “linear” is the exclusion of powers and products of measurements. However, nonlinearity may enter the estimation process indirectly, for example, through nonlinear transformation of the attribute. The challenge posed by(3.1) is to determine optimally the n interpolation coefficients λi, and the shift coefficient λ0. The actual estimation error is z*0 - z0; it is unknown, since z0 is unknown, and so no meaningful statement can be made about it. As an alternative, we shall consider the set of all equivalent estimation problems: in this set we maintain the same spatial configuration of measurement locations, but allow for all the possible combinations, or scenarios, of z values at these locations, including x0. We have replaced a single estimation problem with many, but we have improved our situation since now we know the actual z value at x0 and this will allow a systematic approach.

Abstract:
Abstract Operators globally are consistently challenged to deliver effective cement sealing for Zonal Isolation (ZI) between reservoir units and to prevent Sustained Annulus Pressure (SAP). This paper discusses such a challenge for a land well drilled in West Africa and how these challenges were addressed. The challenge was to achieve effective ZI of a depleted sand gas reservoir and provide B annulus isolation to prevent future SAP. The challenges arose from a combination of losses (during drilling and cementing) and potential gas invasion into the cement during the cement curing process. The solution utilized three Metal Expandable Packer(s) (MEP), two of which were expanded within wet cement. The MEP purpose is to deliver ZI Cement Assurance (CA) across the reservoir and one MEP set above Top of Cement (TOC) within the Open Hole (OH) to protect the B annulus from (SAP). Both solutions improved the overall well integrity, providing mitigation from cross flow, early water production and the risk of methane emissions release into the atmosphere.

Abstract:
Steerable flexible needles with bevel-tip are designed for many medical diagnoses and treatments. In this paper we present a new kinematic model for the bevel-tip flexible needle. Based on the analysis of needle deflection, the procedure of needle insertion can be decomposed of n sub-procedures, which are independent on the depth of insertion. In each sub-procedure, the tip is steered though the base to generate three motions with respect to the body-frame Oxiyizi: the rotation about zi, the translation along zi and the rotation about yi. The kinematics of flexible needle with bevel-tip is presented using the Denavit-Hartenberg method. The inverse kinematics of needle insertion is derived from the kinematic equation of flexible needle. The solution sets are discussed for the insertion consisting of consecutive rotation and insertion control actions. Furthermore, how to select suitable insertion position and orientation is discussed.

Abstract:
With increasing prosumers employed with distributed energy resources (DER), advanced energy management has become increasingly important. To this end, integrating demand-side DER into electricity market is a trend for future smart grids. The double-side auction (DA) market is viewed as a promising peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading mechanism that enables interactions among prosumers in a distributed manner. To achieve the maximum profit in a dynamic electricity market, prosumers act as price makers to simultaneously optimize their operations and trading strategies. However, the traditional DA market is difficult to be explicitly modelled due to its complex clearing algorithm and the stochastic bidding behaviors of the participants. For this reason, in this paper we model this task as a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) problem and propose an algorithm called DA-MADDPG that is modified based on MADDPG by abstracting the other agents’ observations and actions through the DA market public information for each agent’s critic. The experiments show that 1) prosumers obtain more economic benefits in P2P energy trading w.r.t. the conventional electricity market independently trading with the utility company; and 2) DA-MADDPG performs better than the traditional Zero Intelligence (ZI) strategy and the other MARL algorithms, e.g., IQL, IDDPG, IPPO and MADDPG.
