Abstract Introduction: Wendigo psychosis is considered an endemic psychiatric disorder associated with culture. It manifests through compulsive, strong attacks of cannibalistic behaviors. It mainly concerns Algonquian: Cree tribes and people living in the Northern Ojibwa area. Material and methods: In our article, we have collected available publications on Wendigo’s psychosis. This area included Internet databases: PubMed and Google Scholar, from the first reports on the disease to the latest information. Due to culture-bound syndromes and the rarity of occurrence in the present time at work, we focused not only on symptoms, treatment or diagnosis, but also on historical and ethnographic features. Discussion: The first remarks on this disorder derive from the Powhatan dictionary which was used by the Algonquian tribe. In the 1960s there were 70 cases of the disease, but the available epidemiologic data is poor. There are many legends about the mythical creature Wendigo and its likeness is repeatedly used in popular culture. Most of the symptoms exhibited by those suffering from this dysfunction is related to famine and chronic loneliness, e.g. apathy, neurosis. Summary: The treatment of the psychosis in the past was based on folk beliefs, as well as homicide. Modern medicine offers a wide spectrum of antipsychotic drugs whose use is focused on the elimination of side effects. Pharmacotherapy consists in administering to the sick drugs from the group of benzodiazepines or antipsychotic agents of both the first and the second generation.

Abstract:
This study is entitled "Analysis of Translation Methods and Techniques in the Novel Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. Study: Translation ". The data source used is a novel titled the Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. The objectives of this research are to (1) identify the translation method used in the translation of the novel The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey. (2) identify the types of translation techniques used in the translation of Rick Yancey's novel The Curse of the Wendigo. (3) identify the relationship between the translation methods and techniques used in the translation of Rick Yancey's novel The Curse of the Wendigo. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive approach. The theoretical basis of this research is the theory of the Newmark translation method (1988) and the Molina & Albir (2002) translation techniques. The results of this study indicate that there are: (1) seven translation methods used, namely literal (3.2%), faithful (3.2%), semantic (45.2%), adaptation (3.2%) ), idiomatic (3.2%), free (9.7%), and communicative (32.3%). (2) 17 translation techniques used are adaptation (1.2%), amplification (2.4%), borrowing (3.5%), calculating (2.4%), compensation (1.2%), description (2.4%), prevalent equivalent (3.5%), generalization (2.4%), linguistic amplification (9.4%), linguistic compression (17.6%), literal (20%), modulation ( 7.1%), particularization (2.4%), reduction (1.2%), substitution (1.2%), variation (3.5%), and transposition (18.8%). (3) six of the seven translation methods related to the translation technique used.

In 1885, in the midst of the North-West Resistance in which Indigenous people took up arms against the colonial Canadian state, three Cree men executed an elderly Cree woman. At their trial for murder, the defendants were found guilty. They avoided execution because colonial authorities became convinced that they believed that their victim was a wendigo, a cannibal spirit. Killing a wendigo was justified under Cree law and so, argued one judge, the defendants lacked the mens rea necessary to sustain a murder conviction. The history of this case shows the limits of colonial legal jurisdiction and sovereignty. Scarce resources, hostile territory and Indigenous resistance hampered the colonial state's efforts to consolidate its legal control over the Canadian frontier. This essay notes the importance of these forces, but also argues that common law jurisprudence itself could impair the ability of the state to hold Indigenous defendants criminally responsible. Colonial officials regularly invoked the idea that Indigenous people adhered to different legal and normative orders in order to illustrate their supposed inferiority. However, this official recognition of the legal pluralism of the North-West could undermine a defendant's responsibility and cut against efforts to assert the exclusive jurisdiction of Canadian criminal law.

Salah satu komponen penting bagi suatu perusahaan air minum adalah pengoperasian stasiun pompa yang berfungsi untuk mengatur suplai air dari sumber air yang ada menuju ke pelanggan. Untuk mengoperasikan pompa air tersebut, diperlukan motor listrik sebagai penggeraknya. Agar pemakaian energi yang diperlukan untuk mengopersikan motor listrik dapat diatur, maka diperlukan manajemen energi listrik pada stasiun pompa tersebut. Salah satu contoh stasiun pompa adalah pada perusahaan daerah air minum (PDAM) Unit Wendit Kota Malang. Unit ini terdiri atas 3 stasiun pompa yakni Wendit 1, Wendit 2 dan Wendit 3. Ketiga bagian ini disuplai oleh 2 buah trafo dengan kapasitas 1110 kVA untuk Wendit 2 dan 1730 kVA untuk Wendit 1 dan 3. Dari hasil pengukuran faktor daya pada ketiga bagian tersebut, diketahui bahwa nilai faktor daya pada stasiun pompa Wendit 3 sebesar 0,82. Nilai ini tidak memenuhi standart minimal PLN, yakni 0,85. Jika faktor daya kurang dari 0,85 maka industri akan dikenai biaya kelebihan pemakaian daya reaktif (kVARh). Oleh karena itu perlu adanya kajian terhadap manajemen energi pada stasiun pompa PDAM Unit Wendit Kota Malang. Untuk memperbaiki faktor daya yang rendah tersebut, ada dua rekomendasi yang diberikan, yakni pemasangan VSD (Variabel Speed Drive) pada stasiun pompa PDAM Unit Wendit 1 dan 3 serta pemasangan Capasitor Bank pada stasiun pompa PDAM Unit Wendit 2. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, nilai faktor daya PDAM Wendit 3 yang semula 0,82 meningkat menjadi 0,9. Selain itu, terdapat penghematan pemakaian energi listrik per bulan sebesar 10,48% pada PDAM Unit Wendit 1 dan 3 dan 28,32% pada PDAM Unit Wendit 2.

Anyone whose mother tongue is isiZulu can provide or make an attempt to provide meaning of any isiZulu lexical item. What is very difficult is to define / explain isiZulu words as lexical items. There are countless reasons for such difficulty in defining / explaining isiZulu words in isiZulu. Some of these reasons are the following: (i) The sounds of isiZulu words do not hide anything in as far as meanings of words are concerned. Defining isiZulu words is like defining what has already been defined; (ii) IsiZulu words are written as they are being pronounced; (iii) It is extremely difficult to conduct research among amaZulu. AmaZulu are unable to assist with definitions of the isiZulu words because of a number of reasons like they are not trained in providing definitions of isiZulu lexical items; (iv) There are very few resources that can help someone who is conducting research on defining / explaining isiZulu words in isiZulu. The above mentioned reasons are just the few of the reasons which hinder research on defining /explaining isiZulu lexical items in isiZulu. The main objective of this research is to provide assistance to those who intend embarking on research in defining / explaining isiZulu lexical items most especially in a monolingual approach. Another objective of this research is to assist those who intend doing lexicography by providing lexicographic tools which will solve some problems encountered in the field of lexicography.

Abstract:
Studiens syfte var att undersöka hur intensiv lästräning med läslistor kan förändra avkodnings­förmågan hos elever med avkodningssvårigheter i årskurs 7. Vidare syftade studien till att undersöka elevernas upplevelse av att lästräna med läslistor samt huruvida deras läsmotivation påverkas. I studien användes en kvasiexperimentell design med en kvantitativ ansats i form av en intervention med Wendick-modellen Intensivläsning. Pre- och posttester gjordes för att kartlägga elevernas avkodningsförmåga före och efter interventionen. Studien antog även en kvalitativ ansats i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer för att få en ökad förståelse för elevernas upplevelse av lästräningen. En efterföljande anonym kvantitativ enkät genomfördes som komplement till intervjuerna. Efter ett slumpmässigt strategiskt urval delades studiens 12 deltagare in i två grupper, en interventionsgrupp och en kontrollgrupp med sex elever i varje grupp. Läsinterventionen genomfördes en-till-en och varje träningstillfälle pågick i 15 minuter, vid 20 tillfällen under fem veckor. Resultatet visade att både interventionsgruppen och kontroll-gruppen förbättrade sitt resultat något på testet LS Avläsning Ord, medan interventionsgruppen förbättrade sitt resultat på testet LS Avläsning Nonsensord betydligt mer än kontrollgruppen. Samtliga elever i interventionsgruppen var positiva till att lästräna med läslistor och övervägande del av eleverna upplevde att deras läsmotivation påverkades positivt. Studiens resultat visade att intensiv lästräning med läslistor framförallt utvecklade avkodningsförmågan vid läsning av nonsensord hos sex elever i åk 7.

Il presente lavoro di tesi, sviluppato nell’arco di sei mesi presso l’Institut Supérieur Industriel de Bruxelles (ISIB) in collaborazione con Ion Beam Application Group (IBA, Louvain la Neuve), ha come principale soggetto lo studio della risposta del rem meter WENDI-2 commercializzato da Thermo Scientific. Lo studio si è basato principalmente sull’uso del codice Monte Carlo MCNPX 2.5.0, simulando la risposta del detector sia in caso di campi di radiazione neutronica monoenergetici sia in corrispondenza di spettri neutronici continui. La prima fase è stata dedicata alla modellizzazione MCNPX del rem counter, consentendo così la valutazione della sua funzione risposta. Questa è stata ricostruita interpolando 93 punti, ciascuno calcolato in corrispondenza di un singolo valore di energia di una sorgente puntiforme, compreso tra 1 meV e 5 GeV. In tal caso è stata rilevata un’ottima corrispondenza tra i risultati ottenuti e quelli riportati nella letteratura scientifica esistente. In una seconda fase, al fine di ottenere informazioni sulla risposta di WENDI II in corrispondenza di campi complessi di radiazione, simulazioni MCNPX sono state realizzate riproducendo un ambiente di lavoro esistente presso la sede IBA di Louvain la Neuve: la risposta del detector è stata valutata in corrispondenza di 9 diverse posizioni all’interno di un bunker contenente un ciclotrone PET (18 MeV H-), implicando la rilevazione di campi di radiazione neutronica continui ed estesi dalle energie termiche fino a 18 MeV. I risultati ottenuti sono stati infine comparati con i valori di dose ambiente equivalente calcolata nelle stesse condizioni di irraggiamento.

Abstract:
Two prominent historians, David Cannadine and Brad Gregory, have recently contended that history is distorted by overemphasis on human difference and division across time and space. This problem has been acute in studies of Native-Newcomer relations, where exaggeration of Native pre-contact stability and post-contact change further emphasized Native-Newcomer difference. Although questioned in economic, social and political spheres, emphasis on cultural difference persists. To investigate the problem, this study examined the Algonquian wihtiko (windigo), an apparent exemplar of Native-Newcomer difference and division. With a focus on the James Bay Cree, this study first probed the wihtiko phenomenon’s Native origins and meanings. It then examined post-1635 Newcomer encounters with this phenomenon: from the bush to public opinion and law, especially between 1815 and 1914, and in post-1820 academia. Diverse archives, ethnographies, oral traditions, and academic texts were consulted. The cannibal wihtiko evolved from Algonquian attempts to understand and control rare but extreme mental and moral failures in famine contexts. It attained mythical proportions, but fears of wihtiko possession, transformation and violence remained real enough to provoke pre-emptive killings even of family members. Wihtiko beliefs also influenced Algonquian manifestations and interpretations of generic mental and moral failures. Consciously or not, others used it to scapegoat, manipulate, or kill. Newcomers threatened by moral and mental failures attributed to the wihtiko often took Algonquian beliefs and practices seriously, even espousing them. Yet Algonquian wihtiko behaviours, beliefs and practices sometimes presented Newcomers with another layer of questions about mental and moral incompetence. Collisions arose when they discounted, misconstrued or asserted control over Algonquian beliefs and practices. For post-colonial critics, this has raised a third layer of questions about intellectual and moral incompetence. Yet some critics have also misconstrued earlier attempts to understand and control the wihtiko, or attributed an apparent lack of scholarly consensus to Western cultural incompetence or inability to grasp the wihtiko. In contrast, this study of wihtiko phenomena reveals deeper commonalities and continuities. They are obscured by the complex evolution of Natives’ and Newcomers’ struggles to understand and control the wihtiko. Yet hidden in these very struggles and the wihtiko itself is a persistent shared conviction that reducing others to objects of power signals mental and moral failure. The wihtiko reveals cultural differences, changes and divisions, but exemplifies more fundamental commonalities and continuities.

Området för studien är valt utifrån att vi i vår verksamhet som lärare har uppmärksammat elevers svårigheter i huvudräkning. Syftet med interventionsstudien är att undersöka hur räkneflyt i huvudräkning inom talområdet 11-20 i addition och subtraktion kan utvecklas för elever i SUM genom strukturerad undervisning utifrån Wendick-modellen. I studien deltar tre elever i årskurs 4 och två elever i årskurs 7. Metoder som används är huvudräkningstest och intervjuer före samt efter studien. Även loggbok förs under studien. Intensivundervisningen som är vid 4-5 tillfällen i veckan, under 5 veckor utgår från en strukturerad arbetsgång en-en. Under studien uppmärksammas betydelsen av att utgå från elevens förkunskaper, att utveckla elevers taluppfattning och hållbara huvudräkningsstrategier. Resultatet indikerar på att räkneflyt behöver mycket tid för att utvecklas och att strukturerad intensivundervisning under kortare tid har större effekt på räkneflyt hos yngre elever än äldre. En positiv påverkan av intensivundervisning som uppmärksammas är att elevernas motivation ökade under studiens gång.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of an intensive training period in decoding and spelling with the Wendick model Intensive Reading for students diagnosed with dyslexia. A further aim of the study was to examine the students’ experience of the intense training period. The study included three students, two intervention students in grades 5 and 7 and a control student in grade 5, with diagnosed dyslexia. During five weeks, the two intervention students were involved in intensive training in decoding and spelling with the Wendick model Intensive Reading. The results showed that the intervention students had become more confident in their decoding and spelling on the lists and words included in the training materials. Normalized and standardized pre- and posttests, conducted before and after the intervention, showed positive effects in decoding ability. However, no significant changes had occurred in spelling ability, although the intervention student in grade 7 showed some progress. The students' experience of the training were positive: their motivation had increased, they felt that they had improved both in reading and spelling, and they affirmed their willingness to continue training with reading lists. In conclusion, this study proposes that also older students with diagnosed dyslexia can benefit from intensive training in decoding and spelling.
