Abstract:
Schönbergs Denken war von religiösen Vorstellungen beeinflusst, wenn nicht gar geprägt. Ob er ein religiöser Komponist war, lässt sich dagegen weniger eindeutig sagen. Um die unterschiedlichen Konnotationen, mit denen der Aspekt des Religiösen für Schönberg behaftet war, auch nur annäherungsweise zu erfassen, müssen neben den musikalischen Werken auch seine Schriftzeugnisse einbezogen werden. Hier werden vor allem die drei Aspekte der Kunstreligion, des Gebets und des Judentums diskutiert und die sich daraus ergebenden Erkenntnisse in einer Fallstudie auf die Oper "Moses und Aron" übertragen, in der sich die unterschiedlichen Anschauungen wie in keinem zweiten Werk Schönbergs bündeln. bms online (Cornelia Schöntube)

Abstract:
Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Interaktionsprozesse zwischen Bildern und die dadurch entstehende Modifikation des wahrgenommenen Bildsinnes. Der Aufbau des Beitrages zeichnet den Arbeitsprozess nach. Die Frage nach unterschiedlichen Bildverbindungsmechanismen eröffnet zu Beginn der Arbeit eine breit angelegte und systematische Untersuchung mit und durch das Medium Bild. Verschiedenartige chromatische Fotografien wurden auf eine gleiche quadratische Grösse zugeschnitten, nahtlos aneinandergereiht zu Paaren formiert und je nach Art der Verbindung zu Gruppen zusammengefasst. Um eine Objektivierung dieser praktischen Untersuchung zu erreichen, wurde in einem zweiten Teil der Arbeit eine qualitative empirische Studie konzipiert und durchgeführt. Diese hatte zum Ziel festzustellen, ob sich bei unterschiedlichen Personen vergleichbare Bildverbindungsmechanismen beobachten lassen und in welcher Weise sich die gepaarte Darstellung eines Bildes auf den wahrgenommenen Bildsinn auswirkt. Die Resultate der Untersuchung zeigen, dass voneinander distinkte Verbindungsarten zwischen den Bildpaaren unterschieden werden können und belegen mit Deutlichkeit eine Beeinflussung und Veränderung des Bildsinnes in der gepaarten Darbietung gegenüber der Einzelansicht. Im dritten Teil werden die Erkenntnisse aus den praktischen Bilduntersuchungen und der empirischen Studie verschiedenen geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Positionen gegenübergestellt, um die Resultate in einem theoretischen Rahmen und einem Forschungskontext zu situieren.

AbstractBilder haben seit je her das Vermögen, sich als Metamalerei reflexiv mit den Bedingungen ihrer eigenen Bildlichkeit auseinander zu setzen. In Momenten ,medialer Vanitas’, wie sie der Beitrag nachvollzieht, ist es die Symbolik der Vanitas, welche gegen das Bild als solches gerichtet wird. Schon im Barock entstehen sie mit so unterschiedlichen Werken wie jenen Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts und Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggios, die als spezifisch ,thanatologische Metamalerei‘ bezeichnet werden können. Sie zielen auf die mortifzierenden Strukturen bildlicher Repräsentation, ihre Medialität und Materialität. Doch auch in zahlreichen zeitgenössischen Bildern von Marlene Dumas finden sich solch selbstreflexive Momente medialer Vanitas und damit moderne Transformationen eines vormodernen Topos.

Abstract:
Zusammenfassung Big Data in der Astronomie ist die Folge systematischen Sammelns von Informationen, die durch neue Möglichkeiten digitaler Bilderfassung gewonnen werden. Durch aufwendige Bildverarbeitungsprozesse entstehen so imposante astronomische Bilder mit hoher Informationsdichte. Mit der Zeit haben diese Bilder das Feld der Wissenschaftscommunity in zunehmendem Maße verlassen und Einzug in populäre Massenmedien gehalten. Neben ihrer ursprünglich rein epistemischen Funktion wird offenbar, welch hohen Authentizitätsanspruch und Faszinationsgehalt diese bisweilen aufsehenerregenden Bilder bei einem breiten Laienpublikum auslösen können. Zeigen sich in Originalaufnahmen noch komplexe visuelle Informationen wissenschaftlicher Relevanz, so werden diese nicht selten mit dem Argument der „besseren Verständlichkeit“ in den PR-Abteilungen der Forschungszentren stark vereinfacht und modifiziert, um den kulturellen Sehgewohnheiten einer wissenschaftsaffinen Öffentlichkeit zu entsprechen. In Zeiten knapper Forschungsbudgets werden wiederholt diese digital aufgeputzten Bilder einem staunenden Laien-Publikum präsentiert, um so die eigene Forschungsarbeit besser legitimieren zu können. Bei der Analyse dieser Bildmedien wird ein überstrapazierter Einsatz von Falschfarbendarstellungen, Kontrastverstärkungen und fragwürdigen Kontextualisierungen offenkundig, der das ungeschulte Auge in die Irre führt. Um medienethischen Anforderungen gerecht zu werden, ist es daher angebracht, in Publikationen diese verborgenen Bildentstehungsprozesse deutlicher als bisher zu kommunizieren und von rein illustrativen und unwissenschaftlichen Darstellungsformen mit fotorealistischem Anmutungscharakter Abstand zu nehmen.

The following Master’s Thesis aims to describe the social and intellectual state of Austrian and German society after World War II through the perspective of two internationally renowned modern playwrights - Peter Turrini and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. As part of the Postmodern movement, the two authors share the view that “modern man” is in a state of self-alienation and strive, through exaggeration and an emphasis on travesty, to bring the intellectually and socially impoverished condition of modern society on stage. Both plays analyze the discrepancy between Europe’s democratic spirit in the mid-sixties and the mentality of everyday individuals (“Katzelmacher”; 1968), as well as the institutional-representatives nearly forty years later (“Ich liebe dieses Land”; 2001), who continue to consider foreigners as a threat and devalue those individuals as outsiders and marginal figures.

Abstract:
By examining the distinctions made by Lessing between word and picture, I present the hypothesis that cinema and literature have essentially the same range of expression possibilities. However, the ways of expression are differently organized so that there are no linear correspondences between the two artistic modes. The result is that a cinematic adaptation is less a translation of a literary work than a recreation. The examination of Doblin's and Fassbinder's texts shows that there are essential differences in the presentation of the plot. While the novel captures in a mode of citation and montage the violence of collective life in the city, the movie demonstrates in its concentration on psychological types and figures the violence within sexual, interpersonal relationships. The emergence of two different contents that is based upon differences in representation underscores the essential equality in the two modes of expression, cinema and literature.

This chapter evaluates the European fundamental rights. Human rights constitutionally limit the exercise of all European Union competences—including its legislative competences. Three sources of European fundamental rights were subsequently developed: the ‘unwritten’ bill of rights in the form of general principles of European law; the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR); and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The chapter investigates these three bills of rights of the EU, beginning with the discovery of an ‘unwritten’ bill of rights in the form of general principles of European law. It then discusses possible structural limits to European human rights in the form of international obligations flowing from the United Nations Charter. The chapter also analyses the EU's ‘written’ bill of rights in the form of its Charter of Fundamental Rights. Finally, it explores the ECHR as an external bill of rights for the EU.

This chapter highlights Peter S. Paine's responsibilities and works at Cleary Gottlieb, an international law firm with offices on an upper floor of a skyscraper in downtown Manhattan. It discusses the eight Adirondack bills sent to the legislature in 1971 and the four remaining bills reintroduced to the legislature in January 1972. Paine acted as a liaison between the Adirondack Park Agency (APA), his fellow Temporary Study Commission (TSC) alumni, and state legislators to move those four bills along. The chapter outlines the importance of the bills to the TSC's vision of the Adirondacks, and emphasizes the APA's main job to draft two land use plans: the State Land Master Plan, and the Land Use and Development. It further discusses the remaining TSC bills as they moved through the legislature: the Environmental Quality Bond Act; the Wild, Scenic, and Recreational Rivers Act; a bill that would require a constitutional amendment to diminish the park's boundaries; and a bill that expanded the size of the park by about 250,000 acres. Ultimately, the chapter assesses the APA board's struggles with town governments trying to sneak by the agency, crossed signals from Albany, and the board's biggest problem: it was split, with five APA members solidly in favor of regional zoning, one whose support was conditional, and three who were skeptical of the idea.

Drawing on descriptive evidence from journalistic outlets in nineteenth-century Shanghai, this chapter reconstructs the debate on how fluctuations in the silver price could be accommodated in bill finance. It is demonstrated that this was effectuated by means of the ‘even keel’, a management strategy arguably pioneered by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). Concretely, amounts of bills bought were matched by amounts of bills sold; bankers used ‘swap’ operations (i.e., they simultaneously purchased and sold bills in one currency for bills in another currency for the same quantity, in order to offset them) in order to eliminate exchange rate risk. This is shown quantitatively by means of flow-of-funds data of the Yokohama Specie Bank. The chapter concludes with several admonitions for existing macro-historical research.

Not so long ago most compressor rooms were operated manually. They utilized people to turn the refrigeration equipment on/off. In that case, refrigeration ran whether it was needed or not. Recently, several plants have installed centralized automated refrigeration systems that have increased their operating efficiencies. However, there is still a tendency to overlook the refrigeration requirements for optimum efficiencies. Plants keep growing, more production, additional storage and then get by with their existing refrigeration equipment. One of the first question’s that comes to mind. How much of the electrical bill is consumed for refrigeration in my plant? Some of you might have that answer. After speaking with engineers in Citrus, Dairy, Meat, and Cold Storage Warehousing, we found that their refrigeration electrical bill was 60% to 85% of the total bill. So where do we go from here? Abstract:
Differentiating between energy-efficient and inefficient single-family homes on a community scale helps identify and prioritize candidates for energy-efficiency upgrades. Prescreening diagnostic procedures can further retrofit efforts by providing efficiency information before a site-visit is conducted. We applied the prescreening diagnostic is applied to a simulated community of homes in Boulder, Colorado and analyzed energy consumption data to identify energy-inefficient homes. A home is defined as efficient if it is compliant with the prescriptive measures of the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC-2009) for Boulder, Colorado. Previous research indicates a correlation between building operational efficiency and the Heating Slope (HS) regression parameter resulting from the variable-base degree day method. We compared the HS values across a community of houses and those of an IECC-2009-compliant home to identify energy-inefficient homes on a community-scale. To simulate community-wide HS identification, we used DOE-2 energy simulation software for defined home archetypes and corresponding occupant behavior to artificially generate 567 sets of monthly natural gas consumption data Home archetypes were either compliant or incompliant at three conditioned areas; occupant effects were also simulated. Each simulation produced twelve months of natural gas use data. We used monthly energy consumption datasets to estimate the HS values with regression analysis and sorted the homes based on HS values.

A design for an impingement cooled and vented silicon nitride turbine vane for potential application to the Pratt & Whitney/Turbo Power and Marine FT8 aeroderivative stationary turbine is presented. The final design reduced the cooling air requirement for this first stage turbine vane by several percent of total core flow, compared to the current cobalt alloy bill of materials airfoil. Careful attention to achieving uniform internal and external temperature distributions, and design of the trailing edge vests, were necessary to ensure a design having a high Probability of Survival. The NASA CARES code was used to determine probabilistic fast fracture reliability of the silicon nitride airfoil.

Abstract:
UTRC and P&W Canada partnered to demonstrate an advanced combustor configuration that was enabled by high temperature CMC materials, in a PW200 series combustor. The PW200 series have reverse-flow combustors and the program presented significant challenges in design and fabrication. The advanced CMC configuration was successfully tested in a PW206 combustor rig. At full power, a 40–50% reduction in pattern factor relative to the bill-of-material metal combustor was measured. The combustor exit plane temperatures were generally better mixed due to the combined effects of (1) eliminating the cold film layers near the combustor walls and (2) the increase in fuel injector count enabled by the increase in dilution air. The CMC combustor was also successfully tested in an engine configuration. Post test gas path surfaces of the EBC coated CMC combustor components were in good condition.

The State of Utah’s Department of Natural Resources funded two projects in Salt Lake City to demonstrate the feasibility of the Continuous Commissioning® (CC®) process. The two sites selected were a modern state building, the Matheson Courthouse [1], and a very old building, the South City campus of Salt Lake Community College [2]. This paper describes the measures and latest savings results from the CC® process at the Community College. The energy savings amounted to 15% of the annual utility bill. While most of the savings were attributed to CC, part was attributed to the on-site facility operators who implemented measures over and above those recommended by the CC engineers. It was an exciting team effort and a good example of the savings that can be achieved by CC engineers working closely with a good facility operations staff.

Recently it has been shown that in man the oral couma-rin anticoagulant phenprocoumon is eliminated up to 60-70 % in urine and 30-40 % in faeces; in urine phenprocoumon (PH) and its metabolites 7-hydroxy-(7-OH),6-hydroxy-(6-OH) and 4'-hydroxy-(4'-OH) phenprocoumon are present mainly as conjugates. No data so far were available on the biliary excretion of these compounds.We examined bile obtained from four in-patients during PH treatment; bile samples were aspirated in the duodenum at the papilla during routine diagnostic endoscopy and immediately deep frozen before analysis. Samples were extracted both untreated as well as after hydrolysis with 6-glucuronidase/aryl sulfatase and separated by reversed phase gradient elution high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection; for confirmation, the same extracts were methylated and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (CG-MS) (J.X.de Vries et al J Chromatogr., 338 (1985) 325). Two LM2500 rainbow rotors with repaired stage 1 and stage 2 high pressure turbine blades are being assembled for marine propulsion service evaluation by the US Navy. The blades have seen between 5,000 and 15,000 hours of service in the Navy’s Fleets. A number of corrosion resistant coatings including plasma sprayed CoCrAlHf (bill of material), composite plated CoCrAlHf, platinum aluminide, aluminum silicide, and physical vapor deposited yttria stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coating (PVD TBC) will be evaluated in the rainbow rotor. This paper will discuss the advantages and microstructures of the various coatings. Composite plated CoCrAlHf, and PVD TBCs were recently service evaluated in an industrial LM2500 rainbow rotor for 10,500 hours. Both these coatings performed well, although the PVD TBC had local spallation at the leading edge. This paper will review the details of performance of these two coatings in the industrial LM2500 application.

Bile acids are significant physiological factors for digestion, solubilization, absorption, toxic metabolites and xenobiotics. In addition, bile acids are responsible of signal transduction as well as metabolic regulation that activate several receptors such as farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and the membrane G-protein receptor 5 (TGR5). Activation of TGR5 by bile acids is associated with prevention of obesity as well as ameliorating the resistance to insulin via increasing energy expenditure. The objective of this research is to investigate TGR5 gene expression level in different fat depots including visceral or epididymal adipose tissue (eWAT), brown adipose tissue and inguinal adipose tissue (iWAT) and to study the response of TGR5 gene expression to the antiobesity treatment (SFN). Three groups of male CD1 mice were used in this study; lean group fed with SCD, DIO mice on HFD and DIO obese mice treated with anti-obesity treatment. Body weight (BW) and phenotype data were evaluated by weekly including blood samples for analysis of glucose, insulin, leptin, triglycerides (TG). Total RNA was extracted from different fat depots and RT-PCR profiler array technology was used to in order to assess the mRNA expression of TGR5 and leptin. There was significant downregulation of TGR5 gene expression level in obese (DIO) mice and remarkable upregulation of TGR5 gene expression after successful weight loss in DIO mice treated with SFN in time dependent manner at 1 weeks and 4 weeks of ip applications. In conclusion, obesity is associated with decrease in expression of TGR5 in different fat depots and treatment with anti-obesity drug (Sulforaphane) causes stepwise upregulation of TGR5 gene expression in epididymal white adipose tissue parallel stepwise decrease in body weight. Increase of expression of TGR5 in DIO mice in eWAT is accompanied by improvement in glucose homeostasis and insulin action.

Abstract:
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and multiple organ failure (MOF) are critical consequences of septic patients but the pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated yet, because of the complexities of clinical cases. Thereby, attempts were made to establish animal model with DIC & MOF without injecting endotoxin, bacteria or procoagulants into circulation, which may result in misleading conclusions. Twenty four male Japan albino rabbits were divided into the following 4 groups; [A]-ligation of bile duct and instillation of fecal suspension ( appr. 2 X 107 gram negative rods)into the proximal bile duct. [B]-ligation of bile duct and instillation of sterile saline. [C]-laparotomy alone. [D]-[A] receiving intravenous heparin (50u/kg/h). Citrated blood from femoral vein was collected before and 3,6,9 hours after the surgical procedure. After the last blood collectioh, animals were sacrificed and lungs, liver and kidneys were harvested for histological evaluation. During 9h observation period,.the rabbits were kept anesthetized with pentobarbiturate and were hydrated with 4ml/kg/h saline. All animals survived during the period. The following findings were obtained in [A]. Platelet count was gradually decreased (p<0.05) and significant leukopenia was noted at 9h (p<0.01). APTT and PT were significantly prolonged after 3h (p㌼0.01) after 6h. Plasma creatinine and bilirubin were significantly increased than those of [B] (p<0.01). The amount of endotoxin in circulating blood, determined by colorimetric assay, was significantly elevated up to 200pg/ml (p<0.01) . Histological examination revealed glomerular thrombi and focal necrosis of the liver. In [B], bilirubin was slightly elevated and PT was prolonged but much abnormal values were noted in [A]. Endotoxemia was not detected at all in [B]. In [D], the value of PT and fibrinogen was comparable to that of [B] and also the value of bilirubin and creatinine was close to that of [B]. Thus, we established sepsis model with reproducible hypercoagulable state and organ failure. The prevention of organ failure by heparin administration indicates that hypercoagulable state is common etiologic factor in occurrence of DIC and MOF in sepsis

Denken und Poetik des ukrainischen Philosophen H. Skovoroda werden durch das Konzept der philosophia perennis, der einen Weisheit zu verschiedenen Zeiten als Teilhabe an der göttlichen Weisheit lesbar. Dieser Kontext ermöglicht die kohärente Lektüre seiner Schriften und erklärt die Form, in der sich sein Leben abgespielt hat. Nach einer kurzen Einordnung in die Forschung werden Skovorodas Leben und Denken im Kontext von Freimaurertum und Aufklärung betrachtet. Dem schließt sich der Aufruf der Tradition der philosophia perennis an, die eine stimmige und alle Aspekte umfassende Deutung seiner Texte ermöglicht. Besondere Beachtung erfordern dabei der Gottesbegriff und die Bildtheorie der philosophia perennis, die systematisch Analogie und Typologie realisieren und damit alle Denkfiguren, Bilder, Wissenssysteme, Texte und Aussagen derselben Struktur einordnen. Dadurch kann das Konzept der göttlichen Weisheit als Paradigma der philosophia perennis-Tradition in den Schriften Skovorodas wahrgenommen werden. Diese Tradition erklärt, wie Skovoroda Philosophie, Theologie und Poetik als konsequente Teilhabe an der göttlichen Weisheit konzipiert und alles als ein Bild Gottes behandelt und begründet. Die Eigenschaften des Denkens von Skovoroda zeigen die von ihm in seinen Schriften und Aussagen geforderte und praktizierte Poetik und Hermeneutik als eine Realisierung der Zeichenhaftigkeit der Welt als Bild und Spur Gottes im Medium der Sprache. Skovorodas Welterklärung entfaltet sich nach dem Vorbild der Bibel in ihrer christlich-allegorisch-typologischen Auslegungstradition. Poetik erhält die Aufgabe, die göttliche Schöpfung fortzuführen und fortzuschreiben.

Die Pandemie-bedingten Schulschließungen im Frühjahr des Jahres 2020 waren Anlass für umfassende Medienberichtserstattung ebenso wie Grundlage für zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Studien. Einige davon befassten sich mit der Wahrnehmung des Distanzlernens durch die Lehrerinnen und Lehrer und wurden im April und Mai 2020 veröffentlicht. Fünf Studien wurden in einer umfassenden Analyse mit Blick auf den Einsatz digitaler Medien während der Pandemie-bedingten Schulschließungen unterzogen. Die Analyse fokussierte mehrere Schwerpunkte, die im Beitrag dargestellt, anschließend zusammengefasst und verglichen werden. Die vergleichende Analyse der genannten Studien zeichnet ein umfassendes Bild dieser für Lehrkräfte, Schüler- und Elternschaft gleichermaßen herausfordernden Zeit. Darüber hinaus kristallisieren sich Einsatzweisen und Entwicklungstrends mit Blick auf digitale Medien beim schulischen Lernen in Deutschland heraus. Gleichzeitig wird Handlungsbedarf für Politik, Schulverwaltung, Schulträger und Schulleitungen aufgezeigt und eine Grundlage für weitere wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen gelegt. Insbesondere bietet die Studie eine Vorlage für spätere Studien, die beispielsweise nach dem Lockdown im Sommer 2020, während der neuerlichen Schulschließungen im Winter 2020/21 oder nach der künftigen Rückkehr zum schulischen Regelbetrieb durchgeführt wurden und werden.
