ABSTRACT Leishmania major is an important trypanosomatid pathogen that causes leishmaniasis, which is a serious disease in much of the Old World. Current treatments include a small number of antimony compounds that, while somewhat effective, are limited by serious side effects. We have screened a small portion of a unique chemical library and have found at least three novel compounds that are effective against L. tarentolae and L. major in vitro and in a murine macrophage model of L. major infection. Bird skin has a number of specific properties. The uropygial gland is a significant skin gland in many species. The secretion of this gland is particularly necessary for maintaining physical characteristics, including feather waterproofing. In the investigated species of storks (genus Ciconia), secretions of the uropygial gland have been found to be mixtures of monoester waxes, diester waxes, triester waxes and triglycerides. Wax dies

Abstract Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cause significant problems in the petroleum industry through fouling, corrosion of metal pipelines and infrastructure, and by degradation of petroleum in reservoirs (reservoir souring) and storage facilities. Current control efforts include regular cleaning and the use of chemical biocides that are both toxic to the environment and are not always effective. We are actively investigating the potential use of phage for controlling SRB. Phage are natural, bacteriolytic viruses that are highly specific for bacterial hosts and harmless to all other life form

Rare earth elements (REE) and many other critical minerals are necessary for the manufacturing of modern everyday technologies, including microchips, batteries and electric motors. Recovery of these materials typically involves aqueous systems which can be modeled as chemical equilibrium problems. One common method for solving these problems is the law of mass action approach (LMA), where a system of non-linear equations involving the equilibrium constants is solved. However, despite being theoretically simple, these problems are in practice very difficult to solve. Currently, the use of itera

Abstract Black liquor high solids (about 80%) concentrators have often been found to suffer from aggressive corrosion. Especially the 1st and 2nd effect bodies are susceptible to corrosion attacks resulting in tube leaks and wall thinning, limiting the availability and lifetime of evaporator lines. Corrosion dynamics and utilized construction materials have been studied extensively within the pulp and paper industry in order to understand the corrosion process. However, it has been challenging to identify root causes for corrosion, which has limited pro-active measures in minimizing corrosion

Abstract Sea water systems on many offshore platforms are treated with small amounts of chlorine to prevent marine growth inside piping and equipment. It is well known that small additions of chlorine increase the oxidation strength (corrosion potential) of Ti and stainless steels in sea water. Regarding Al, CuNi and carbon steel, it is difficult to find the effect of chlorine on these materials described in the literature. Therefore, during laboratory tests the corrosion potentials of engineering materials under influence of additions of chlorine and chlorite were measured. The investigated e

Abstract Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is one of the main material degradation mechanisms in oil and gas operations. One typical component of offshore oil and gas producing facilities are seawater injection (SWI) systems, which maintain or restore reservoir pressure through injection of deaerated seawater into the reservoir (for secondary oil recovery). The associated carbon steel piping and pipelines are prone to the development of anaerobic biofilms which, unless adequately controlled with biocides, lead to corrosion and ultimately to costly repairs or even pipeline replacemen

The antioxidant reaction of flavonoids found in red wines against lipid peroxidation were found to depend on the structure of the molecule. In this project it was found that the activation of the mechanism of resistance in avocado fruits to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides depends on the increase of the level of the preformed antifungal diene. This increase is regulated by the synthesis of the flavonoid epicatechin present in the fruit peel. Epicatechin is an inhibitor of the enzyme lipoxygenase whose activity catalyze the breakdown of the antifungal diene. Increase in epicatechin concentration inhibits the breakdown of the antifungal compound and since the compound is continuously synthesized, both combined processes result in the

Crown rot is a severe postharvest disease affecting tropical and subtropical fruits like mango, avocado, papaya, and banana. It is caused by fungal pathogens that penetrate the fruit, reducing its pulp and leading to premature ripening. Systemic fungicides have been used to control these fungi, typically applied to seeds, leaves, or fruits to prevent disease spread. However, traditional fungicides can pose toxicity risks to the environment and human health. Essential oils are chemical substances that can be found in plants and have antifungal capacity. Preliminary experiments suggested that the receptor-like cytoplasmickinase (RLCK) Mai5 plays a positive role in pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and interacts with the MAPKKK M3Kε.
