Abstract:
John Wertheimer, the author of “Gloria's Story,” has produced a complex and absorbing text that skillfully guides the reader through the microhistory of Gloria's concubinage to an enhanced appreciation of the greater legal, social, and institutional forces at play in mid-twentieth century Guatemala. Using Gloria's story to shift into more general observations about law and society in Guatemala, Wertheimer states that laws can “affect behavior by establishing incentives and disincentives for different types of action and by reinforcing or undermining different values.” Wertheimer reads the legal records involving Gloria and her family to write her story from the dominant critical perspective of gender and class. He notes the way in which class distinctions played into the creation and maintenance of concubinages and the manner in which gender stereotypes bolstered such institutions. It is all exacting yet comfortable stuff for us to read. “Yes, yes, of course, exactly” we nod as we read of the individual and institutional gendered oppression meted out on Gloria and her children by Julio and the state. Nonetheless, Wertheimer's analysis delves deeper: Gloria may have gained in status and stability through her concubinage, and liberal reforms such as decriminalizing adultery and casting out distinctions between legitimate and illegitimate children may have had the unintended consequence of strengthening the institution of adulterous concubinage.

Full text
Abstract:
Wertheimer's (1923, Psychologische Forschung 4 301–350) idea that the perceptual world is articulated according to factors of organisation is widely acknowledged as one of the most original contributions of Gestalt psychology and stands as a milestone in the history of vision research. An inquiry focused on the forerunners of some of Wertheimer's factors of perceptual organisation is documented here. In fact, in 1900 Schumann described grouping by proximity and by vertical symmetry, and in 1903 G E Müller identified the factors of sameness/similarity and contour. Other authors contributed to the early description of these factors, such as Rubin, who in 1922 originally illustrated grouping by similarity. Even though Wertheimer himself granted these authors due recognition, later psychologists have paid little attention to their contributions. Some possible reasons for this negligence are briefly discussed.

Abstract:
Alan Wertheimer's paper on “Unconscionability and Contracts” presents an enlightening discussion of a complex and contentious legal concept. His primary objective is not to contribute to legal scholarship, but to use the law to shed light on the ethics of exchange relationships. Specifically, he wants to “use the doctrine of unconscionability in contracts as a lens through which to get a clearer understanding of exploitation—its essential characteristics and moral force” (p. 480). It is apparent that he sees exploitation (and unconscionability) as closely linked to a more general notion of fairness.

Abstract:
Aim. Analysis of modern modification of Wertheim’s operation and its results in Bukovina region for last 10 years.Methods. Analysis of literature in internet. Data about morbidity and mortality of cancer colli uteri in Chernivtsi Oncology Center.Results. An original description of the technique of radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer by Wertheim is presented. Modifications of the Wertheim operation with various classifications of interventions are considered. In first class of this classification are included extra fascial hysterectomies without resection of tissues, lymph nodules and fascia of pelvis which directly contradicts the principles of Wertheim's operation. The results of radical laparoscopic hysterectomy for cervical cancer are discussed. In 2019 trials, there was an almost three-fold excess of relapses after laparoscopic hysterectomies compared to open operations. The issues of the epidemiology of cervical cancer in Ukraine and Bukovina are considered. The incidence of cervical cancer in the Chernivtsi region was about 70 patients per year, or 8.4 per 100,000 population (data from 2016-2018). Cervical cancer mortality was from 40 to 43 people annually or 4.3-4.7 per 100,000 population. Wertheim’s operation is performed annually in 26-34 women and is practically not accompanied by complications and mortality.Conclusion. Wertheim’s operation is safe and unique method for treatment of cervical cancer.

Abstract:

The notion of exploitation is prominent in political discourse and policy debates. It is central in analyses of labour relations, especially focusing on the weakest segments of the labour force including women and children (International Labour Office 2017a, 2017b). It features in controversies on surrogate motherhood (Wood 1995; Wertheimer 1996), and on drug-testing and the price of life-saving drugs, especially in developing countries.

Abstract:
