12 GOATS comprising 4 of each of three breeds, namely West African Dwarf, Red Sokoto and crossbreds (West African Dwarf x Saanen), were bled alternately in the mornings and afternoons to evaluate their serum protein profile. The three breeds were similar in total serum proteins but not in protein profile. The crossbred goats had more albumin than the purebreds. Alpha and beta globulins occurred in equal proportions in the West African Dwarf and crossbred goats although the latter were extremely low in gamma globulins. The results imply a higher growth rate and susceptibility to infection of th

A summary is given of work on flocks of West African Dwarf goats at Wageningen, the University of Ife (Nigeria) and a village in Nigeria. It was concluded that these goats are suitable for meat production under low and high levels of feeding and management. Under intensive management, daily gain averaged 80 g (0.3-0.4% of mature body weight), and the number of weaned kids produced per [female] per yr 2.56. Goats fed only roughage gained 43 g per day. Response of the West African Dwarf (WAD) goats to two different isolates ofHaemonchus contortus, the Red Sokoto (RS) goat isolate (RSHc) and the WAD goat isolate (WADHc) (isolated from WAD goats), was studied by experimental infections of 4–6-month-old male WAD goat kids. Group 1 and Group 2 goats were each infected with 4500 infective larvae (L3) of RSHc and WADHc, respectively. Group 3 animals served as uninfected control. Prepatent period (PPP), faecal egg counts (FEC), worm burden (WB), body weight (BW), packed cell volume (PCV), and body condition score (BCS) were determined. WAD goats in

Udder traits of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats and factors influencing them were studied using 185 does located in South Western Nigeria. Traits evaluated were udder length (UL), udder width (UW), udder circumference (UC) and udder volume (UV). Others were teat length (TL), teat width (TW), teat circumference (TC) distance between teats (DT) and height of teat from the ground (HTG). Udder length was significantly (P<0.001) influenced by age, lactation status and liveweight. The increase in UL with age was quadratic. Lactating does had longer udders than non-lactating does by 1.93cm. Effects

This chapter takes a Cultural Linguistics approach to research on World Englishes and is primarily concerned with the use and variation of animal metaphors in West African Englishes, namely Nigerian and Ghanaian English. In order to provide a sound basis for the aspects of variation, other varieties of English such as British English, Tanzanian English, and Kenyan English will be included as points of reference. In this way, this research intends to reveal the role of different cultural settings on the usage of figurative language in general and variation of animal metaphors in particular, tak

Chapter 4, “Flying Home?,” continues the exploration of spirituality and asks where “home” was for Palmaristas. Using the famous stories of “flying Africans” that appear regularly in African American folklore and novels by authors such as Toni Morrison and Alejo Carpentier, the chapter suggests why other forms of posthumous or “supernatural” flight must also enter discussions of Palmares. The chapter also uses Inquisition records to paint a fuller picture of spirituality and religious practices in Palmares and the larger captaincy, Pernambuco.
