Abstract:

Research clearly indicates that parental involvement plays an essential role in the educational process of any student regardless of grade level. However, technology is changing the way schools communicate, which affects the way parents are involved in their children’s education. Research on the digital divide indicates that there are differences in access based on race and family income. In other words, lower income and minority families tend to have less access to technology, and therefore may be less able to fully participate in schools.

This issue of social justice was investigated at a small charter school located in West Los Angeles, California, where the researcher was an administrator. Over the past several years, there had been a demographic shift in enrollment. Teachers and administrators noticed a problem related to parental involvement at the school and all school communication relied on technology. The purpose of this study was to investigate the intersection of technology and parental involvement at West Los Angeles Charter (WLAC). Applying the theoretical lens of Epstein’s (1988) work on parental involvement and Davis’s (1989) work on technology acceptance, the administrator-researcher interviewed 16 parents, stratified by income level to guarantee that various experiences were represented, and concluded that while all parents expressed interest in being involved in their child’s education, barriers limited that involvement, particularly for the lower-income families. These barriers included issues related to language rather than issues related to access, which WLAC will be able to address to support parental involvement among all families.

Schmutz, Hélène. "Vers une redéfinition de la nature américaine : trois études de cas dans la région de Los Angeles." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040149/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Environmental historians have worked at redefining the modes of relationship between man and nature in the United States. The way this relation is defined conditions environmental politics, and therefore contributes to the material transformation of the continent. Five major trends of thought about nature are described: nature as a resource transformed by work ; preservationism ; conservationism ; ecology ; and environmental justice. Those ideas endure to this very day in the discourses constructed about nature: they either juxtapose or confront each other. The goal of this thesis is to understand whether they undergo a transformation, evolving towards a definition of the man/nature relationship as a socionatural hybrid. To this end, three cases are examined here, all of which are connected with the Los Angeles area in the early 2000s. The first concerns Tejon Ranch and the agreement passed in 2008 about Tejon Ranch between environmental associations and the owners : it poses the question of the meaning given to a preservation that would incorporate ecological, mythical and economic aspects of that territory, a remain of the Western past. The second deals with the decision that was made in 2007 by the City of Los Angeles to revitalize its river and offers a good example of the broadening of the definition of nature: it can also be urban. The ecological and cultural preoccupations about the river complicate the conservation problematic in Southern California. Finally, South Central Farm’s environmental justice case (1994-2006) is the sign of a transition in American environmental ideas from a clearly spatially limited object to a world issue

Garside, Emily. "Angels at the National and Bohemians in the West End : transposing and reviving American dramatic depictions of AIDS to the British stage in 'Angels in America' and 'Rent'." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/7532.

Abstract:
This study focuses on two highly successful AIDS plays, Tony Kushner’s Angels in America and Jonathan Larson’s Rent. These plays were performed in London in 1994 and 1998 respectively and revived in 2007. Both plays are key examples of American theatrical representations of AIDS performed on the London stage. This thesis examines how these plays represented AIDs on the London stage. Secondly the reception of these American AIDS plays is considered when staged in London is considered. Finally the longer term significance of performing these texts, both in terms of depictions of AIDS and the wider stylistic elements in relation to the theatrical landscape is also examined. Through reflection on the reception of these plays, they are considered for their significance of their depiction of AIDS and place within London theatre. It is examined how, through the use of political, medical and emotional ties, these plays successfully depicted AIDS when transposed to the British stage. In these successful depictions of AIDS, and in their overall press reception, these plays developed a significant place in the London theatrical landscape. Using archival records and press responses, the performance of these plays in their original production and in revival is considered in relation to the original productions and the revived versions in London. The consideration of live, performed versions of these texts is of central importance, and further theoretical consideration is built around the nature of a performance text. In using archival records, elements of the productions and performance are considered in a manner that is not possible if only using the published, written version of the play. These plays are considered as significant works on AIDS that transposed successfully to the London theatrical landscape, making Angels and Rent not only but successful and important parts of the British theatrical landscape.

Abstract:
碩士
國立臺灣師範大學
英語研究所
89
Abstract As a national myth, the American Dream has profoundly influenced American literary works and the transformations of this Dream, to a great extent, reflect the historical contexts of different periods. Therefore, how American writers come to terms with this cultural heritage when the society has undergone a great change becomes a burning issue. Growing under its mesmerizing power, Sam Shepard does not unreservedly accept the Dream. He scrutinizes closely this subject and stages its problematics. By analyzing his plays, we could have a better understanding of the American Dream in this post-modern age. Briefly, this study is divided into three chapters. The first chapter includes a survey of the changes in the nature of the American Dream. The impacts of several important historical events on the Dream and the dissolution of the modern American playwrights toward it are carefully investigated. A short summary of Shepard’s biography, his emergence on the American stage, and the influence of the film industry on him are all introduced in this chapter. The second chapter focuses on the last of Shepard’s family trilogy, True West (1980). Since the West has always become the symbolic place where Americans project their unfulfilled dreams, True West first questions the traditional demarcation of the West and the East. What we have is the endless versions of the West and every utterance becomes potentially a site of struggle. By examining the nature of language, this thesis holds that the search for a "True West" is marked by failure because language never transmits transparently. The last chapter discusses how this collective unconsciousness is manufactured, recycled and disseminated through an analysis of the play, Angel City (1976). In this play, we find the screen has replaced the West as the nurturing bed for the American Dream. Hollow simulacra penetrate all aspects of human life and these bigger-than-life images reframe the multitude's positions of identifications. Shepard makes his audience alert to “the unseen hand” behind this inflated myth and to its power of interpellation. By obstructing our habitual mode of thinking, Shepard frees us from an idealized American past and brings us into a world of heteroglossia. By laying bare the mechanism of the Dream industry, Shepard indicates our limits but he never feels discouraged. Instead, only by discovering our confinement can we re-examine our present conditions. Though he is unable to abandon his cultural heritage, his deft language, original images and frequent appropriation of American popular culture all exhibit his conscious attempts to voice the experience of the American people and to demystify the American Dream.

Abstract:
碩士
國立高雄第一科技大學
應用德語系碩士班
105
Strategic Analysis of Biographical Literature Translation’s Culture-specific Words from the Perspective of Sematic Translation : A Case Study of Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt Abstract The study aims to analyze the translation strategy of biographical literature. The research subject is the culture-specific words in Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt, which in 2014 published and was written by German authors Stefan Kornelius, translated into Chinese by Yang, Mon-Ru. According to the theories of cultural layers by several culture scholar, the author divide culture into surface culture and deep culture, and Try to classify the culture-specific words in Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt into the two cultures. In addition, the author analyzes the characteristics of biographical literature translation texts by Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt, and classifies them through the cultural layers. The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze the translation strategies of culture-specific words in the text of biographical translation from the perspective of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation, and to explore the translation strategy of different cultural layers and types in biographical literature. The study shows the statistical data of culture-specific words and the results of the analysis that the translation strategies of Angela Merkel - Die Kanzlerin und ihre Welt. Found that autobiographical representation of the expressive text, whether they are explicit or implicit culture-specific words, most of them use naturalization strategy for translation. However, in the same work, some parts of the text need to take semantic translation, some parts are required to use the communicative translation, especially when the cultural blank turns up. Therefore, in a translation work can see the two strategies complete each other. There is no absolute semantic translation works, and no absolute communicative translation works. The basic task of the translator is to convert the concept of foreign culture and cultural information into the information, that the Chinese readers can understand and accept. In addition to the translation problem of the language, it also includes the cultural value, especially the political culture, the political idea, the equal transmission strategy of the policy thinking. In addition, the translation should consider the original text type, the importance of semantic units and the purpose of translation, and to the appropriate translation theory as the basis, to consider when to take which translation strategy. Abstract:
This thesis examines selected political speeches with regard to word-formation and its processes, namely from the grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic points of view. The analyzed political speeches are the Otto von Bismarck's speech delivered on 20 July 1870, the Adolf Hitler's speech delivered on 1 September 1939, the Willy Brandt's speech delivered on 10 November 1989, and the Angela Merkel's speech from 14 December 2015. This is an interdisciplinary thesis which deals with politics, history, and linguistics. The thesis examines four different periods, namely Bismarck's era, Nazism, the Federal Republic of Germany between 1949 and 1990, and the contemporary Federal Republic of Germany. These periods are analyzed from the political, historical, and socio-cultural points of view. Subsequently, the selected political speeches are analyzed with respect to word- formation, its processes, and the period in which they were delivered. The individual results are then compared and certain conclusions are drawn from the comparison. The aim of this thesis is to highlight the importance of word-formation and its processes which are significant for political speeches from the 19th century onwards. This thesis shows and analyzes the motives, purposes, aims, and consequences of their usage in particular...
