Abstract:
Western aesthetic convention represents an accrual of inherited societal perspectives on the artist, the artifact and its consumer. A review of its history and the etymology of its terminology discloses a twofold problem. The first aspect concerns the separation of the manufacture of aesthetic objects from their economic raison d'etre. The second involves the categorization of these artifacts into art or craft. This problem is compounded when considering Western judgements on non-Western aesthetics. Inuit handicraft provides an appropriate model to illustrate the fact that present convention and nomenclature prove inadequate in addressing both intra and especially extra-cultural concerns. A broader and more inclusive orientation is needed.

Igarashi, Yoko. "Japanese Poetry in Western Art Song." Thesis, Boston University, 2012. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12426.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University
Western art songs written on Japanese poems, Tanka, appeared in the early twentieth century as a late manifestation of Japonisme, the Japanese influence on Western art and music. The songs discussed in this dissertation include Japanisches Regenlied (1909) by Joseph Marx, Three Japanese Lyrics (1912-13) by Igor Stravinsky, Petits Poi!mes Japonais (1919) by Francesco Santoliquido, and Romances on Texts by Japanese Poets (1928-32) by Dmitri Shostakovich. Japonisme emerged as a significant movement in late-nineteenth-century Western art when Japanese artworks were first exported to Europe. Under the influence of these works, Western painters soon adopted Japanese techniques especially from traditional wood-block prints (Ukiyo-e). The appreciation of Japanese art and culture eventually emerged in Western music as a part of Orientalism and exoticism, first in opera, then in Debussy's music, and lastly in art songs. The Japanese poems used in Western art songs examined here are most commonly referred to as Tanka (a short poem), a genre that flourished between the third and tenth centuries. Because of the unique characteristics of the Japanese language, translating Japanese poems into European languages requires a certain imagination. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the relationship between the original Japanese poems and their translations into European languages, and to discuss their transformation. The introduction provides a brief overview of Japonisme in Western art in the late nineteenth century. Chapter One focuses on the basic elements of Japanese poetry in order to outline the characteristics unique to the Japanese language. Considering Japanese influence within the category of "Orientalism" and "Exoticism" in music, Chapter Two explores the evidence for Oriental and exotic influences on Western music. Chapter Three focuses more specifically on Japanese influences in Western music. A detailed study of poems and translations, and their relationship to music is the core focus of Chapter Four. Chapter Five concludes that Tanka vanished from Western art songs soon after the songs under consideration were composed.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I investigate the main characteristics and techniques of the visual language of Dada and Surrealism and how they have survived and evolved in the realm of graphic design, especially in contemporary poster art. I also analyzed how Dada and Surrealist irrational humor has been transformed and activated into today's poster art, to support my claim that there are unique parallels and similar visual relationships. In my thesis methodology, I used one-on-one interviews with some of the poster artists whose work I analyzed. I also compared the work of specific artists with aspects of the visual language of Dada and Surrealist art. In my first section, I explored Dada's anarchistic and destructive juxtaposed photomontages, which created certain visual forms like hybridization, metamorphosis, and the contrast between large and small and high and low. I analyze how these visual languages and techniques like photomontage have been transformed and used in contemporary poster art. In my second section, I discuss paintings of Magritte in relation to mystery, the absurd and the irrational, some of the basic feature of Surrealism. Magritte's artwork also used similar visual languages and approaches to Dadaists like Heartfield in his photomontages. I also found that contemporary poster artists like Olbinski and Glaser interpreted Magritte's visual approaches and methods in their poster designs. 11 In the last section, I argue that the absurdness, irrationality and subversive humor found in Dada and surrealism, and formed by juxtaposed type of images and created by means of the collage principles, had parallel in contemporary poster art. I believe that my findings, outcomes and identifications based on comparisons, analysis and investigations will help design students, practitioners, scholars, and art enthusiasts in understanding and conceiving certain visual languages, methods, and approaches that I found to exist among Dada, Surrealism and the modem poster.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes research in the computational analysis of harmony in western art music, focussing particularly on improving the accuracy and information-richness of key and chord extraction from digital score data. It is argued that a greater sophistication in automatic harmony analysis is an important contribution to the field of computational musicology. Initial experiments use hidden Markov models to predict key and modulation from automatically labelled chord sequences. Model parameters are based on heuristically formulated chord and key weightings derived from Sch¨onberg’s harmonic theory and the key and chord ratings resulting from perceptual experiments with listeners. The music theory models are shown to outperform the perceptual models both in terms of key accuracy and modelling the precise moment of key change. All of the models perform well enough to generate descriptive data about modulatory frequency, modulatory type and key distance. A robust method of classifying underlying chord types from elaborated keyboard music is then detailed. The method successfully distinguishes between essential and inessential notes, for example, passing notes and neighbour notes, and combines note classification information with tertian chord potential to measure the harmonic importance of a note. Existing approaches to automatic chord classification are unsuitable for use with complex textures and are restricted to triads and simple sevenths. An important goal is therefore to recognise a much broader set of chords, including complex chord types such as 9ths, 11ths and 13ths. This level of detail is necessary if the methods are to supply sophisticated information about the harmonic techniques of composers. Testing on the first twenty-four preludes of J. S. Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier, hand annotated by the author, a state of the art approach achieves 22.1% accuracy; our method achieves 55% accuracy.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Hydraulic fracturing (fracing) is the most effective technique for improving the productivity of gas condensate reservoirs. The water used during fracing creates the conductivity needed for production, however, it will also create water blockage in the path of gas flow. The pressure and flow rate behavior of a gas condensate reservoir is distinctly different from the behavior of a solution gas drive reservoir. The producing rate is not only affected by the pressure gradient but is also a more complex function of the actual value of the flowing bottomhole pressure. Initially, the additional pressure required during flowback is needed to produce the water used during fracturing. The reservoir energy to lift this water to the surface requires more pressure drop around the wellbore. Additionally, unnecessary water used during fracing operations incrementally increases the pressure drop near the wellbore. Increased pressure drop leads the formation to reach the dew point sooner and condensate banking start to build in the fracture system. Increased condensate banking leaves valuable liquid hydrocarbon in the reservoir. Water blockages reduce well productivity and speed up the condensate damage due to the high-pressure drop required. An innovative pattern recognition and machine learning technology was applied in real-time during fracture treatment to increase fracture complexity, improve fracture conductivity, increase diffusion surface area, and improve stage productivity index. This technology focuses on creating the most stimulated fracture surface area per volume of water injected, resulting in the same fracture surface area but with a large reduction in water injected. The reduction of the water leads to an improved well productivity index by minimizing water blockage around the wellbore. Increasing fracture surface area per volume of frac water injected has a positive impact on the post-frac productivity of treated wells by increasing condensate production rates with less drawdown compared with traditional frac designs. In addition, using the optimum water volume has reduced the cost of fracturing operations and the cost of water flow back disposal leading to significant increases in well Net Present Value (NPV). A field case will be presented with condensate performance. The use of real-time fracture optimization technology with the integration of rock and reservoir fluid properties leads to better well performance. Production benefits of increased condensate production result in no reserves being lost-in-place to condensate blockage. Added ESG benefits are reduced superfluous water use, pump time, and water disposal costs.

Abstract:
Abstract Pressure-transient analysis (PTA) is widely used in the industry to estimate fracture half-length, height, and skin due to hydraulic fracturing as well as reservoir parameters. PTA studies focus on pressure data from long shut-in periods and diagnostic fracture injection tests (DFITs), while analyzing the pressure data recorded during the hydraulic fracture treatment has been overlooked. This paper details the state-of-the-art in applying pressure transient analysis to better estimate hydraulic fracture conductivity and dimensions and improve treatment designs stage by stage. The initial portion of this paper describes the application of a novel and low-cost diagnostic method for post-fracture analysis. The bulk of the paper is dedicated to present case histories that illustrate the PTA of the recorded pressure data during treatment to obtain estimates of fracture dimensions and conductivity. The pressure recorded during each stage is processed to ensure the proper data quality and the pressure falloff at the end of the stage is filtered out. The pressure is then analyzed for multi-cluster, finite-conductivity fractures, to obtain the fracture half-length, conductivity, and leakoff. Calculated parameters from each stage are compared to provide insights into the hydraulic fracture design and confirm the adequacy of the treatment design along the well. The results from stage leakoff pressure analysis are very valuable in confirming relative fracture conductivity and providing a qualitative measure of fracture length and height. The total stimulated reservoir area (SRA) calculated using the proposed method yields comparable values to SRA obtained from buildup analysis. The information provided is as valuable and comparable as that from direct near-wellbore diagnostics, such as radioactive traces, temperature logging, real-time micro-seismic monitoring, and production logging. The paper proposes a novel, low-cost analytical PTA method for estimating fracture dimensions, skin, and leakoff coefficient. We illustrate – with several field cases – that conventional post-fracture techniques can be integrated with the stage by stage PTA analysis to provide not only a more consistent and systematic analysis but also a more accurate assessment of treatment effectiveness. The findings of this paper help improve the efficiency of multistage hydraulic fracturing stimulation of horizontal wells.

Abstract:
Abstract Monitoring and surveillance (M&S) is one of the key requisites for assessing the effectiveness and success of any Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) or Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) project. These projects can include waterflooding, gas flooding, chemical injection, or any other types. It will help understand, track, monitor and predict the injectant plume migration, flow paths, and breakthrough times. The M&S helps in quantifying the performance of the IOR/EOR project objectives. It provides a good understanding of the remaining oil saturation (ROS) and its distribution in the reservoir during and after the flood. A comprehensive and advanced monitoring and surveillance (M&S) program has to be developed for any given IOR/EOR project. The best practices of any such M&S program should include conventional, advanced and emerging novel technologies for wellbore and inter-well measurements. These include advanced time-lapse pulsed neutron, resistivity, diffusion logs, and bore-hole gravity measurements, cross-well geophysical measurements, water and gas tracers, geochemical, compositional and soil gas analyses, and 4D seismic and surface gravity measurements. The data obtained from the M&S program provide a better understanding of the reservoir dynamics and can be used to refine the reservoir simulation model and fine tune its parameters. This presentation reviews some proven best practices and draw examples from on-going projects and related novel technologies being deployed. We will then look at the new horizon for advanced M&S technologies.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydraulic fracturing has proven to be the only method for making unconventional wells economically productive. Understanding fracture growth is the main industry goal to help in planning well spacing and optimization of fracing operation costs. Traditional production logs used to check the production status at limited snapshot in time by measuring the contribution of each stage. This delays the optimization of fracturing design and production evaluation. Conventional production logging technology uses coiled tubing, fiber or tractor conveyed testing tools to measure key parameters like rate, pressure, temperature, and liquid/gas holdup along the horizontal lateral. From these measurements, the contribution of different lateral parts calculated. It is a mature technology for conventional wells and has been used in unconventional wells in recent years (Lopez, 2014; Nnebocha, 2013; Mccluskey, 2012). However, the cost and interpretation issues in these logs rarely make them economic diagnostics. This paper introduces an innovative production logging technology to gain better understanding of post-frac production performance and help to enhance the development of shale gas wells. A new method uses real-time integration of rock mechanics during pumping stage and fluid flow in porous media during leakoff to characterize frac stage contribution. This method used to calculate each stage fracture surface area, fracture face skin, stage permeability, and detect stage interference. The stage-level solution used to predict stage-level production performance once well flowback. Post-stage leakoff analysis used to calculate fracture efficiency of each stage and provide method of improving in real-time. The results from these analyses used in conjunction with full well rate transient analysis (RTA) and build-up analysis (PTA) to create reservoir simulation models with real fracture lengths for each stage. This new method will help in well spacing optimization by informing fracing operations of fracture interference with offset wells, both parent and child in real-time. The result can be validated with production logs, fiber optics, and tracer analysis. Use of real-time toolless production log does not require running of any surveillance tool in well beside surface pressure gauge, therefore the cost is minimal compared to current industry methods. Also, the new method will lead to saving millions of dollars to operator if it uses in real time frac job to guide the next frac optimization.

Abstract:
Countries in the Western Balkans have engaged in various transitional justice and reconciliation initiatives to address the legacy of the wars of the 1990s and the deep political and societal divisions that persist. There is growing consensus among scholars and practitioners that in order to foster meaningful change, transitional justice must extend beyond trials (the dominant international mechanism in the region) and be more firmly anchored in affected communities with alternative sites, safe spaces, and modes of engagement. This rapid literature review presents a sample of initiatives, spanning a range of sectors and fields – truth-telling, art and culture, memorialisation, dialogue and education – that have achieved a level of success in contributing to processes of reconciliation, most frequently at the community level. It draws primarily from recent studies, published in the past five years. Much of the literature available centres on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), with some examples also drawn from Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

Dedeken, Chiara, and Kevin Osborne. Repatriating FTFs from Syria: Learning from the Western Balkans. RESOLVE Network, October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37805/pn2021.23.wb.

Full text
Abstract:
Four countries in the Western Balkan region (Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Montenegro) are in the top ten countries with the most foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) per capita. The political will to repatriate FTFs remains strong, at least in the Western Balkans, despite delays in 2020 due to COVID-19. In other parts of the world, especially high-income countries, political will to repatriate is considerably lower. COVID-19 has further constrained nations in their efforts to repatriate law-abiding citizens, which is less controversial than FTF families. Based on discussions with government officials and security officers in the Western Balkans as well as international experts and donors, this policy note provides operational recommendations to move forward with repatriation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of returnees building on lessons from repatriations in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. It urges governments globally to double down on repatriation efforts and to call on experience from governments in the Balkans to bring back their FTFs now. The recommendations in this policy note are relevant to any country where political will to repatriate FTFs can be generated.

Burns-Dans, Elizabeth, Alexandra Wallis, and Deborah Gare. A History of the Architects Board of Western Australia, 1921-2021. The Architects Board of Western Australia and The University of Notre Dame Australia, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32613/reports/2021.1.

Full text
Abstract:
An economic and population boom in the 1890s created opportunities for architects to find work and fame in Western Australia. Architecture, therefore, became a viable profession for the first time, and the number of practicing architects in the colony (and then state) quickly grew. Associations such as the Western Australian Institute of Architects were established to organise the profession, but as the number of architects grew and Western Australian society matured, it became evident that a role for government was required to ensure practice standards and consumer protection. In 1921, therefore, the Architects Act was passed, and, in the following year, the Architects Board of Western Australia was launched. This report traces the evolution and transformation of professional architectural practice since then, and evaluates the role and impact of the Board in its first century.
