Abstract:
The legend of Shambhala incorporated in the Tibetan Canon, has been one of the favourite motives of Tibetan Buddhism throughout the centuries. High lamas and laity alike venerated the legend connecting their innermost aspirations with it. For some it represents a mystical millennial country revealing itself only to the chosen ones, while others perceive it as a symbol of the hidden treasures of the mind. This way or the other, the legend of Shambhala remains a living belief for many. The present hardships of Tibet made the legend with its leitmotif of future victory of Buddhism, especially viable.
When the legend reached the West in the beginning of this century, it inspired many westerners including political leaders, and acquired diverse and innovative interpretations.
Conveying the ever cherished human dream of a better world beyond ours, the legend of Shambhala proved to be a ubiquitous symbol surpassing its original Buddhist framework.

Abstract:
The fundamental dichotomy between savage and civilized man is examined within the archetypal Western myth of American culture. The roots of the dichotomy are explored through images produced between 1888 and 1909 by artists Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Four John Ford films are then used as a basis for the "dichotomous archetype" approach to understanding Western myth in film. Next, twenty-nine "historical" and "contemporary" Western movies are discussed chronologically, from The Virginian (1929) to Dances with Wolves (1990), in terms of the savage/civilized schema as it is personified by the roles of archetypal characters. The conclusion proposes a potential resolution of the savage/civilized conflict through an ecumenical mythology that recognizes a universal reverence for nature.

AIM This thesis is based on a collection of stories (most of which relate to bark paintings), that were told to me by speakers of the Kunwinjku language of the Northern Territory of Australia. My objective is to show that these particular stories have an important role in the transmission of Kunwinjku culture. I do this by seeking to understand the stories and how they are used by Kunwinjku people. I first consider the stories in the original Kunwinjku language; secondly I relate the stories to the western Arnhem Land artistic traditions; and thirdly I examine their social context. The important role of such stories in cultural transmission is reflected in the phrases daborrabolk kandimarneyolyolmeng "the old people told us stories" and kandimarneyolyolmi "they used to tell us stories" which occur in many stories. I have included one of these phrases as part of my thesis title.

When an ancient Near Eastern city was besieged and looted the statues and cultic appurtenances of the gods were often confiscated by the conquerors. Their loss was more than a heavy blow to the defeated people: the statue was the god‘s representation on earth and watched over and protected the city so his abandonment of his city was thought to have a lasting devastating effect. From the point of view of the conqueror the statue could be used not only as a tool of intimidation but for bribery and a crude form of diplomacy and as propaganda for his might and glory. In this thesis the history of the phenomenon of godnap is explored for the first time and there is also an investigation of related problems in religion and cultural history. At the outset a detailed investigation of the numinous character of an ancient Mesopotamian statue is given including an account of the ritual that imbued it with this divine quality. Special attention is given to Marduk of Babylon and the episodes in which even he found himself the victim of theft. The thesis includes an excursus on evocatio and parallels between Hittite and ancient Roman practices are drawn.

Musicians, philosophers, historians, and composers through the ages have attempted to understand the relationship between musical modes and musical affections. The Greeks used the modes as prescriptives for healing diseases, based on the purgative power of the affections. Greek writings transmitted through Boethius were misinterpreted by well-meaning Renaissance music theorists who believed Boethius was relating the ethos of the affections to the church modes rather than to the Greek modes. This thesis begins with Plato's and Aristotle's beliefs about musical affect and ends with a discussion of the teachings of Johann Heinichen, Johann Mattheson, and C. P. E. Bach. Stories about using musical modes to bring about healing are also included.

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation consists of a catalogue of those inscribed lead tablets found in the Western Mediterranean which can be dated to between the late sixth and the late first centuries BCE. In other words, it includes all the inscriptions on this medium that can be placed between the earliest examples and the end of the Roman Republic. The reign of Augustus represents a milestone in terms of epigraphic habits, generally speaking but also, in particular, regarding the use of lead tablets as a medium for inscriptions. From a geographical point of view, the Western Mediterranean has provided us with inscriptions coming from Sicily, Italy, the coasts of Gaul and Spain, and the western part of the Roman province of Africa, namely the region of Carthage. As far as the language of the texts is concerned, it has to be reminded that, before the Roman conquest and much later after it, this whole area was inhabited by a series of peoples speaking very different languages, both Indo-European and non-Indo-European. The main part of the corpus is written in Greek and, more precisely, in the Doric dialects from Sicily and southern Italy, though there are also inscriptions in Ionic and in Koine Greek, alongside many instances of dialect mixing. The Italic branch has provided us with lead tablets inscribed in Oscan and Latin, as has the Celtic family, with a few texts in Gaulish and one in Celtiberian. Another important part of the catalogue entries come from non-Indo-European speaking regions. The second main contributor to the corpus is Iberian, a language in which more than one hundred lead sheets, coming from the coast between the River Hérault in southern France and the River Segura in Murcia and Alacant, are written. The Etruscans have also yielded several documents. In Punic there are only a handful of lead tablets, of which only one has been read so far, while three sheets from modern-day Andalusia, inscribed in the local, semi-syllabic script, does not appear to be in Iberian but in a language which might correspond to Turdetanian, still very badly known. As for the type of inscriptions found on lead tablets, curses or defixiones continue to be the most numerous group of texts. They are written not only in the three colonial languages—Greek, Punic, and Latin—, but also in Oscan and Etruscan, whereas the use of binding màgic among the Iberians has not yet been confirmed. Other religious inscriptions, such as leges sacrae or abecedaria, are also attested. Besides, we cannot disregard the abundance of inscriptions on lead belonging to the sphere of everyday life, such as private letters, contracts, and, above all, a set of Iberian sheets concerning economic activities. In these, despite our difficulties in understanding the language, there is no doubt that numerals, measurement units, and words belonging to the lexical field of money are mentioned next to personal names.
El nucli d’aquesta tesi doctoral està integrat per un catàleg de les làmines de plom inscrites del Mediterrani Occidental que poden datar-se entre la fi del segle VI i la fi de l’I ane, és a dir, dels primers testimonis fins a la caiguda de la República. D’un punt de vista geogràfic, la regió ens ha fornit inscripcions procedents de Sicília, Itàlia, les costes de la Gàl·lia i de la península Ibèrica, i l’àrea de Cartago. Quant a la llengua dels textos, la major part del corpus és escrit en grec i, més precisament, en els dialectes dòrics de Sicília i del sud d’Itàlia, encara que hi ha també inscripcions en jònic i en grec koiné, a més de nombrosos exemples de barreja de dialectes. La branca de les llengües itàliques ens ha proporcionat ploms escrits en osc i en llatí, com també la família cèltica, amb qualque text gal i un de celtibèric. Pel que fa a les regions de parla no indoeuropea, la segona llengua més emprada al corpus és l’ibèric, amb més de cent ploms provinents de la costa entre el riu Erau a Occitània i el riu Segura a Múrcia i Alacant. La resta dels documents estan en etrusc o en púnic, si bé resten tres làmines andaluses, inscrites en l’escriptura semisil·làbica local, que no semblen en llengua ibèrica sinó probablement turdetana, encara molt mal coneguda. Quant al tipus d’inscripcions presents als ploms, les tauletes de maledicció representen el grup més nombrós de textos. Es documenten encara altres inscripcions religioses, com les lleis sagrades o els alfabetaris. D’altra banda, no pot ésser menystingut el nombre de ploms enquadrables dins l’esfera de la vida quotidiana, com ara lletres privades, contractes i, sobretot, un conjunt de làmines ibèriques que testimonien activitats de tipus econòmic, làmines en les quals no hi ha dubte que s’esmenten numerals, unitats de mesura i termes del camp lèxic de la moneda al costat de noms personals.

This creative project is a study of cultural awareness in architecture. The hypothesis states that architecture is one of many cultural manifestations in a society. One seeking contemporary architecture in a society should explore the idea of contemporary culture in that society. This study aims to point out the relationship of living patterns and living spaces (culture and architecture). Living patterns are influenced by their own cultures and, at the same time, the characteristics of living spaces reflect the aspects of living patterns. To explore contemporary living spaces, cultural issues must be considered.However, culture is dynamic. It is changed by reasons of time, place and people. Even though the tradional cultures in a society continuingly permeate to the next generations, some of them disappear as time, place or people change. Therefore, to study the issue of culture in contemporary society, traditional and new cultures are reckoned with as contemporary families adapt both cultures into their lifestyles.While Thai society has maintained its own unique culture, recently globalization has brought influences of Western ideas into Thailand. These influences are effecting Thai culture and bearing on how housing responds to a changing society.The work is divided into two parts, research and design. To explore the deeper meaning of contemporary living spaces, the research focuses on the importannce of culture to the characteristics of living spaces. It analyzes cultural and social changes that have influenced contemporary Thai families. This cultural analyses confirms that the meaning and design of contemporary living spaces are directly influenced by cultural adjustments.To support the hypothesis and research, a housing project for contemporary Thai families is proposed. It is a schematic design that incorporates the cultural analyses into the design process. The design is a model for organizing cultural information into the design of living spaces.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to reflect on the importance that deception has had on the efficient functioning of societies and the development of individuals. I attempt to do so by adopting an historical perspective, analysing the development of the notion of lawful deception during the Middle Ages and, mainly, the Early Modern Age through theological and political discourses. The scope of my investigation is pan-European. I examine sources from the major Western territories, but I pay special attention to those produced in the Spanish-Habsburg Empire, which was a major political and cultural entity during this period. My claim is that between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, the West witnessed the formation of what I call an "Ethics of Deception:" a trend of thought that, without challenging the Augustinian prohibition of lying, recognised deception as intrinsic to nature and mankind, thereby justifying its use from moral and political perspectives. I explain how this intellectual process was conducted, fostered by new social realities, and helped by the flourishing of casuistry, tacitism and neostoicism. Furthermore, I argue that the acceptance of deception contributed to the creation of a new view of the world, language and human interaction. A view that is in the very basis of some of the most characteristic features of Baroque art and that opened the door to some of the most transcendental cultural changes of the period, such as the creation of politics governed by reason rather than faith, the secularisation of social behaviour, and the emergence of the notions of individualism, privacy and freedom of thought. For these reasons, I claim that deception played an important role in the shaping of Modernity.

Abstract:
In this thesis we enquire into the essence and mission of Christianity in the light of the Jamaican historico-cultural experience. Chapter one is devoted to a partial investigation into the nature of Western Christianity vis-a-vis Western Civilization - the modern dilemma, its historical beginnings and development, its response to philosophical ideas and other cultural positions, Church-State relations, its divisions, and its social attitude. We next identify the major elements in the Jamaican experience as revealed in the impact of the Spanish conquest on the original Arawak population, the enslavement of African Peoples, and the post-slavery repercussions vis-a-vis Western Christianity. In order better to understand the New Testament Gospel we locate its origin in the Old Testament examining its relationship with the Law and Temple, Priesthood and Prophets, observing its social implications, and we follow it en route to the New Testament. In chapter four we engage in a brief examination of the Hellenistic cultural environment including the Jewish Diaspora, in order to have a grasp of the initial interaction between Gospel and Culture. Our concern in chapter five is to recover the essence of Jesus' proclamation of the Gospel as witnessed to in the Synoptics. From this go on to examine its transmission to the wider Hellenistic milieu, concentrating on the Pauline and Johannine presentations. Finally it is argued that the Gospel in its transmission across cultures should be proclaimed, as far as possible, without cultural accretions; that the prevailing categories and symbols understood within the indigenous Jamaican culture be appreciated and, where possible, appropriated for purposes of communication; and, fundamentally, that in all circumstances the Church should faithfully guarantee a synchronization between its message and action, and Jesus' Gospel of the Kingdom of God, described in terms of Good News to the Poor.

Essa dissertação tem como proposta identificar as representações da sexualidade feminina em revistas brasileiras contemporâneas dirigidas à mulher. O objetivo é verificar o quanto essas representações distam, ou se aproximam, dos estereótipos femininos construídos ao longo da civilização ocidental. O corpus da pesquisa é formado por três publicações de editoras consolidadas no mercado brasileiro: Nova e Lola (já extinta), da Editora Abril, e Marie Claire, da Editora Globo, colecionadas por seis meses – de janeiro a junho de 2013. A fundamentação teórica inclui trabalhos de estudiosos do feminismo, da história das mulheres no mundo ocidental, da identidade como construção narrativa, das interações sociais e da comunicação. A Análise de Conteúdo categorial, como proposta por Laurence Bardin, foi a metodologia usada para analisar o material selecionado. Procedeu-se ainda a uma pesquisa de recepção com leitoras das respectivas revistas, cujo objetivo é averiguar a sua percepção relativa a esse produto. A pesquisa aponta para a ideia de “modernizar para não transformar” - característica encontrada nas revistas e acentuada nas últimas décadas.
The purpose of this dissertation is to identify different forms of female sexuality representation in contemporary Brazilian magazines aimed at female audiences. The specific aim is to verify how much these representations get close or far from long-standing feminine stereotypes built in Western civilization. The research corpus is composed of three publications by some traditional Brazilian printing houses: the Nova and Lola magazines (the last one already extinct) by Editora Abril and Marie Claire by Editora Globo, collected along six months – from January through June 2013. Theoretical fundamentals used in this work include results of research about feminism, the history of women in the Western world, identity as a narrative construction, social interactions and communication. Categorical content analysis, as a proposal by Laurence Bardin was the methodology used to analyze the selected material. A research work about the reception of this product has also been conducted. The overall conclusion suggests the existence of an idea of “modernizing in order not to transform” a characteristic that has been found in magazines and seems to have been highlighted in the last decades.

Female archetypes reflect a social construction of reality, expressing expected modes of behavior, beliefs, and assumptions about women and are reinforced by repetition of common patterns and themes. Often female archetypes take on the physical characteristics of animals, commune with nature, engage in sexual promiscuity, and possess special powers to bewitch and control men into doing their bidding. Four prevalent archetypes include: the Predatory Woman, who with her bestial nature becomes the hunter of men; the Sacrificial Woman, who dutifully negates herself for the sake of men; the Bad Mother, who is cold, unnatural, and challenges men; and les enfants terrible seductive girl-women who at once tempt and torment men. This research traces the development and evolution of female archetypes and explores how images of women, nature, sexuality, and evil are structured within a cultural framework of Western tradition: myths and folktales, religious, philosophical, and scientific works, and film.

Los límites del papel de la traducción en el tejido del pensamiento árabe en sus fases clásica y moderna constituyen el tema principal de la presente investigación. En ambos periodos la traducción desempeñó una función primordial a la hora de transmitir las ideas y moldear los fundamentos del pensamiento árabe. No solo se trata de una mera operación traductora, sino también de un movimiento cultural integrado en los paradigmas del proyecto de la “registrografía” cultural árabe que tuvo lugar en los siglos VIII, IX y X, así como en el proyecto cultural de la nahḍa árabe moderna. Muchos factores ideológicos, políticos, confesionales y lingüísticos condicionaron el desarrollo de ambos proyectos e hicieron que el primero liderase constantemente la vida cultural árabe desde los albores del islam hasta la época moderna. Por eso, la transmisión al árabe de las ciencias de los antiguos se tuvo que someter al control cultural de los salaf; del mismo modo, la traducción del conocimiento científico innovador elaborado en Europa tuvo que hacer frente a dicho control. Además, la construcción cultural en el ámbito árabe-islámico se hizo bajo la sombra del papel intermediario de otras culturas, como la siríaca y la persa en el periodo clásico o como la francesa y la turco-otomana en la época moderna. Esta diversidad cultural desarrollada entre fuerzas centrípetas y centrífugas generó fenómenos traductológicos como la apropiación del conocimiento o la arabización de los textos objeto de traducción. Asimismo, dio lugar a la aparición de nuevas corrientes como el orientalismo europeo y el occidentalismo árabe, que utilizan la traducción como recurso práctico para definir respectivamente Oriente y Occidente. Siguiendo un método analítico y crítico, esta investigación aborda el estudio de los límites de este complejo proceso traductor para aportar rasgos pertinentes que permiten entender cómo se urdieron los distintos rumbos del pensamiento árabe-islámico en sus fases clásica y moderna, sin perder de vista el patrimonio cultural de los salaf.
The limits of the role of translation within the fabric of Arab thought in its classical and modern periods are the primary focus of this study. In both periods, translation proved instrumental in the transmission of ideas and played a key role in shaping the foundations of Arab thought. This was not merely about the activity of translation per se, but also about a cultural movement integrated into the paradigms of two overarching projects: the Arab cultural “registrography” of the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries, and the later cultural project of the Arab Renaissance or Naḥda. A host of ideological, political, religious and linguistic factors had an important impact on the two projects and led the earlier one to carry on a continuing leadership role in Arab cultural life from the dawn of Islam into the modern era. As a result, the transmission of the sciences of antiquity was necessarily subjected to cultural control by the Salaf, as were later translations of innovative scientific knowledge arriving from Europe. In addition, cultural construction in the Arab–Islamic world took place in the shadow of the intermediary role played by other cultures, such as the Syriac and Persian cultures in the classical period and the French and Ottoman-Turkish cultures in the modern era. This cultural diversity, which developed amid both centripetal and centrifugal forces, produced translation phenomena such as the appropriation of knowledge and the Arabicization of texts in translation. Similarly, it spurred the emergence of new currents of thought, such as European Orientalism and Arab Occidentalism, which employed translation as a practical resource to define the East and West, respectively. The present study, which adopts a critical analytical method, seeks to examine the limits of the complex process of translation in order to identify the traits that are important for understanding how the diverse strands of Arab–Islamic thought fit together in its classical and modern periods without losing sight of the cultural legacy of the Salaf.
تشكل إنجازات وحدود دور الترجمة في النسيج الفكري العربي قديما وحديثا الموضوع الأساسي لهذا البحث. ذلك أنه في كلتا الفترتين لعبت الترجمة دورا رئيسا في نقل الأفكار وفي وضع اللبنات الأساسية للفكر العربي عموما. لا يتعلق الأمر فقط بنقل النصوص من لغة إلى لغة وفقا للمفهوم التقليدي للترجمة، بل بحركة فكرية انخرطت أولا في مشروع التدوين الثقافي العربي خلال العصر الكلاسيكي، الذي يمتد من القرن الثامن الميلادي إلى القرن العاشر، وثانيا في بناء النهضة الثقافية العربية خلال العصر الحديث. ولا شك أن العديد من العوامل الأيديولوجية والسياسية والعقدية واللغوية قد ساهمت في إنجاز المشروعين الفكريين وجعلت من الأول أنموذجا للحياة الثقافية لدى الشعوب الناطقة بالعربية منذ فجر الإسلام إلى العصر الحديث. إذ أن نقل علوم الأوائل قديما أو ترجمة التطور العلمي المنجز في أوروبا حديثا إلى اللغة العربية كان يخضع وجوبا للراقبة الثقافية الممارسَة من طرف رواد السلف.بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يلاحظ أن بناء الثقافة العربية الإسلامية ساهمت فيه أيضا الثقافات الأخرى التي لعبت دور الوساطة اللغوية في الترجمة كالسريانية والفارسية في العصر القديم أو الفرنسية والتركية العثمانية في العصر الحديث. ووسط هذه التجاذبات الناتجة عن التعدد الثقافي، بزغت ظواهر ترجمية تستهدف الأصول لتعريبها أو لتحويلها إلى مكتسبات معرفية. كما ظهرت تيارات فكرية جديدة، كالاستشراق الأوروبي والاستغراب العربي، جعلت من الترجمة عنصرا براغماتيا يُعتمد عليه لتحديد رموز الشرق والغرب.باتباعنا لمنهجية التحليل النقدي، تسعى هذه الأطروحة إلى تقديم دراسة مفصلة لهذا السياق الترجمي المعقد لفهم تطورات النسيج الفكري العربي الإسلامي واتجاهاته قديما وحديثا، وما لعبه من دور في ذلك التراث الثقافي للسلف خلال أبرز مراحله. الكلمات المفتاحيةالفكر العربي، الترجمة ونقد الترجمة، العباسيون، النهضة، الاستشراق، الحضارة الغربية.

In the so-called postmodern era, when networked media are increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life, where the ‘real’ and the ‘simulation’ become ever more indistinguishable; the physical and virtual intertwine; machines and man merge, and audience and stars transpose. To understand consumption in a time when realness and authenticity are no longer relevant, this thesis draws attention to the consumption and production of media content through case studies of consumer participation and social trends in Japan. The work begins in a themed shopping mall, Venus Fort in Tokyo Bay; continues with the reproduction of Audrey Hepburn‘s image; expands to the dramatised ‘realness’ of television; and finally moves to the omnipresent mobile phone and the impact of networked personal media on our idea of the ‘real’. First, through an analysis of a themed consumption environment, it is suggested that a transition is taking place in consumption from objects to experiences, services and spectacle. Secondly, by showing Audrey Hepburn‘s transition from a Hollywood star to a virtualised idol, technologically-aided illusions are shown to make hierarchical realness irrelevant. Thirdly, via Reality TV dating programs, the focus shifts to the role of audience participation in the consumption of media content. These themes are demonstrated individually, then merged into the last example – the social and cultural evolution induced by the mass consumption of networked media, that promise to revolutionise the way we consume, communicate and connect between people, machines and consumer goods.The thesis grounds its analysis of contemporary trends in the culture of consumption in Japan in theories of commodity and culture, the real and the simulation, speed and reality, the spectacle and the self in mediated spaces, and probes further into the collapse of demarcations between the virtual and the real, the event and the everyday and media and the self in the network society

Cette thèse a pour objet de mettre en évidence l’influence de la presse anglophone en Chine sur l’émergence de la presse chinoise moderne au 19e siècle. La presse anglophone prit pied aux pourtours d’une Chine dont le seul organe d’information se limitait à la Gazette impériale depuis deux millénaires. Les journaux anglophones virent le jour pour apporter aux Britanniques et aux Chinois qui partageaient la même sphère les informations nécessaires à leur activité commerciale. La presse anglophone s’est développée seule pendant une trentaine d’années puis elle accompagna la naissance de la presse chinoise moderne et lui servit de modèle et de soutien. Les journaux commerciaux anglophones hébergèrent la presse chinoise au sein de leurs propres pages avant la parution de titres exclusivement chinois dans les années 1870. La presse anglophone et la jeune presse chinoise moderne s’ouvrirent aux problématiques politiques et furent animées par de nouvelles personnalités, parmi lesquelles des étudiants chinois occidentalisés, des hommes d’affaires chinois fortunés et des lettrés ayant fait un pas vers la modernité. L’indépendance éditoriale de la presse chinoise vis-à-vis de la presse anglophone fut alors acquise, mais l’influence et la coopération ne cessèrent pas pour autant. Les échanges matériels et professionnels se muèrent en connivences et protections, la presse anglophone aidant les titres chinois à surmonter la censure et la répression dont ils étaient les victimes. La présence de la presse anglophone sur les pourtours de la Chine a permis au savoir-faire technique et à l’expérience humaine d’être réunis au moment historique où la Chine, confrontée au défi de la modernité, a vu surgir à la fin du 19e siècle des débats sur sa transformation, alors qu’aucun vecteur médiatique n’était à l’époque disponible. L’émergence d’une presse chinoise moderne étant devenue inéluctable, elle s’est accomplie en symbiose avec la presse anglophone qui s’était enracinée depuis quelques décennies sur les pourtours de la Chine
This dissertation examines the influence of the English-language press in China [in Hong Kong and the International concession of Shanghai] on the birth of a modern Chinese press from 1827 to 1911. The English-language press developed on the edge of a country where the only channel of information for 2000 years had been the Imperial gazette. The English language newspapers allowed British and Chinese residents to gather information which was both useful in their daily lives and to run their businesses. The English language papers first developed single-handedly for about thirty years before encouraging the birth of Chinese ones and serving as a support and model. The English-language press first incorporated Chinese pages before publishing entirely Chinese newspapers in the 1870s. Both the English-language press and the new Chinese press opened up to recent political issues and new personalities, such as westernized Chinese students, wealthy businessmen and scholar-gentry who had come to accept modernity for China. The Chinese-language press soon achieved editorial independence but cooperation between the two was maintained. Material and professional exchanges transformed themselves into mutual help and understanding, the British helping at times to overcome the bouts of censorship and repression from which the Chinese papers regularly suffered. The presence of English-language press enabled both technical and personnel transfers to take place at a time in history when China was confronted with the threat of modernity and had begun to experience debates about its future but had no local media to report on them. A modern Chinese press had thus become an absolute necessity for citizens who took pride in their past and were concerned with the weakened state of their country. It was achieved with the help of the English-language press which had taken roots a few decades earlier on the outskirts of China

This article claim to estabilish a epistemologic discourse from the science history?s point of view in a moment where its statute,methods , approachs and possibility conditions, in history?s crisis period, depares itself in risk, as universitary institutions as european?s social imagination about knowing for excellence. Abstract:
This thesis examines the 'way of thinking' that dominates the modern worldview, which has been, it is argued, responsible for the ecological crisis. 'Modernism' - which includes scientism, rationalism, humanism, and psychologism - is being universalized and applied throughout the world, largely by means of the Western-led process of globalization. The thesis traces the development of this thinking from its roots in early Christianity, through Scholasticism, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, to the present day myth of material progress and growth. It is argued that predominant philosophical and practical solutions to the ecological crisis are limited since they are constructed within a conceptual framework which is part of the problem. The modem worldview represents a loss of traditional wisdom. 'Traditionalism' — or the sophia perennis — identifies the crisis as primarily a spiritual crisis. This timeless wisdom, which is found within all traditional religions, is investigated. The thesis notes the demise of this wisdom within Western Christianity during the Scientific Revolution, and identifies Islam as an example of a civilization which endeavoured to retain the restraining influence of the sophia perennis within its science. The thesis concludes by arguing that a metanoia — a transformation of consciousness leading to a change of thinking — urgently needs to occur if we are to acquire the means by which we can solve the ecological crisis.

Edkins' theory is mainly consisted of two parts, comparative linguistics and researches on religious ideas of ancient Chinese people. At the same time, he also attempted to find western elements in ancient Chinese astrology, astronomy, philosophy and technology. His theory, together with other supporters, formed a special visual angle through which some Sinologists connected the Chinese culture with the main stream of the general history of human civilization constructed by western scholars. It seams to them that the Chinese civilization and the western civilization are not two different systems. To some Sinologists at that tine, whether the Chinese civilization could be correctly understood or not, rests on whether scholars could find its relation with western civilization. After a series of researches, almost all the elements of Chinese civilization were brought into the hermeneutic system of the west. The mystic color of China faded.
Edkins' theory is not completely new. In the 16th century, Jesuits began to interpret Chinese language, history and religion through the theory of the western origin of Chinese civilization. From the second part of the 19th Century to the first years of the 20 th century, this theory became popular, and among many advocates, there are not only westerners like John Chalmers, Joseph Edkins, Terrien de Lacouperie and Thomas Kingsmill, but also Chinese like Zhang Tai-Yan, Liu Shi-Pei and Huang Jie, etc. Meanwhile, various versions evolved from this theory, different from one another in the time and place that civilization came to China from the west. Some of them mix religious faith with academic studies together, and others' opinions are much more like scientific researches. Strange in the sight of scholars nowadays, this theory had its special meaning at the very beginning of western Sinology.
It seems that Sinologists of the 19th century did not try to describe China as an utter other, totally different from the west. On the contrary, they attempted to eliminate the difference. So this dissertation can also help us to get a deeper insight into the conception of Orientalism.
This dissertation is to discuss the methods that some Sinologists used to decipher the Chinese civilization by examining Joseph Edkins' works on Chinese language and civilization. Edkins is a missionary and Sinologist who advocated the theory of the western origin of Chinese civilization.

While much has been written in recent times on the concept of civil society, the idea that it is part of an Orientalist construct of West and non-West has not been explored. This dissertation addresses this lacuna in the literature by examining Western concepts of civil society and establishing the ways in which these concepts are constructed through the deployment of a mirroring construction of non-Western Others. I examine the work of three theorists (Montesquieu, Ferguson and Hegel) who wrote on civil society during the Enlightenment or in its aftermath. These theorists are emblematic of a discursive formation which differed from prior discursive formations in two related respects: their concept of civil society and their construction of non-Western Others. During the eighteenth century both constructions of the concept of civil society and of non-Western Others were undergoing significant changes leading eventually to a concept of civil society as distinct from the state and to what might be termed a "post-Enlightenment geographical imagination". To demonstrate the disjuncture between discursive formations, the work of two seventeenth-century theorists (Hobbes and Locke) is compared and contrasted with that of these writers. The work of three late twentieth-century social scientists (Shils, Gellner and Fukuyama) is examined and their concept of civil society and use of non-Western Others is contrasted with those of the prior discursive formation. I show how their concept of civil society is informed both by the concept of civil society developed in the Enlightenment and its aftermath and by the mirroring constructions of non-Western Others of the post-Enlightenment geographical imagination. Underscoring the work of all these theorists are methods of comparison and the representational practices they authorize. These are explored through two conceptions of alterity which have operated in Western thought and their connections to questions of comparison. An analysis is made of the relationship of the ideas of comparison and comparative method to questions of translation in Western philosophy and social science. The implications of this discussion of comparison and representation for theories of civil society and their constructions of non-Western Others is analyzed.

Abstract:

Genesis is central to both hegemonic and counterhegemonic conceptions of communal identity. Read one way, the book undergirds contemporary assumptions about the nature of communality and the categories through which it is constructed. Read another way, however, it undermines them. This project considers these two readings of Genesis, their asymmetrical approaches to the book, and the intersection between them.

Using family storytelling as an approach to biblical interpretation allows this study to hold together the constitution of the reading community and the interpretation of the biblical text. In a Eurocentric reading of Genesis, the constitution of the reading community governs engagement of the biblical text. Conversely, in the YHWH-centric reading advocated here, the biblical text governs the constitution of the reading community. This study reopens the question of what it means to be an "us" rather than leaving participation in an "us" as an (often unacknowledged) a priori condition of all interpretation. In doing so it does not deny the existence or the significance of such preexisting commitments, but rather it refuses to regard those commitments as fixed and final.

From an exegetical standpoint, this study challenges Eurocentrism by finding in Genesis a vision of communality that, in emphasizing the importance of living out the relatedness of all humans to one another and to God, holds the potential for more fruitful relationships between communities. From a methodological standpoint, it offers a reading of Genesis that incorporates features of the text that have been neglected by colonizing readings and avoids the difficulties and internal inconsistencies from which they suffer. Making use of Benedict Anderson's account of the relationship between the imagined community of the nation and religiously imagined communities, as well as Jonathan Sheehan's account of the Enlightenment Bible, this study argues that certain ways of reading the Bible arose to help the West articulate its sense of itself and its others. Drawing attention to the text's reception and the way in which Eurocentric approaches displace Jews and marginalize (the West's) others, this project considers alternative ways of conceptualizing the relationship between the Bible and those who call it their own.

The history of Islam in modern times is essentially the history of the Western impact on the Muslim society. The Islamic religion assumed a position as the ultimate and final revelation versus Christianity and Judaism. Islam also developed its own unique civilisation within the religious parameters that were different from those in the West. With territorial expansion the two worlds had an impact on each other. Although contact had taken place before, the Crusades were the first major impact of the West on the Islamic world. With the decline of the OttomarrEmpire and the subsequent colonial expansion into the Islamic world, the adoption of Western views and influences were increasingly seen as being progressive, while those of the Islamic world represented stagnation. Together with colonisation came the mind set of the Western world towards the Islamic world that influenced perceptions, as well as policies. With modernisation came disillusionment that resulted in the questioning of what the West had to offer. This resulted in various actions and reactions against the West, but the Islamic world still experienced that it was behind the contemporary world. Its retrogression has been blamed on the failure of the Muslim society to transform the theoretical civilisation framework of Islam into an operational form, while the West has kept and enhanced its parameters. The problematic issues taking the two civilisations into the twenty-first century are what adjustments are to be made to ensure survival. The question is in what manner Islam can be modernised or whether modernity must be Islamised and what adjustments are going to be forthcoming from the Arab world. The choice is between submitting to one of the contending versions of modern civilisation that are offered to them, merging their own culture and identity in a larger and dominating whole, or following those who urge them to turn their backs upon the West. In this manner they may succeed in renewing their society from within, meeting the West on terms of equirco-operation.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the transformation of a small town in South East Transylvania, Sighisoara, historically defined through a strong German presence. Despite the small number of Germans remaining in the region after the massive migrations of the last decades, historical German privilege (made visible through and materialized in the long-lasting architecture) is reformulated and re-configured in the present precisely through processes connected to valuing and producing this built landscape as historical heritage. Claims for stakes in the development of the area become entangled with an interest in heritage preservation publicly performed by a diverse set of (mostly foreign) actors. By analyzing a failed development project, the gentrification of the historical citadel, transformations in public spaces, and NGO and historical preservation funding, I argue that Germanness offers a discursive space in which local desires for a developed West are able to articulate, productively, with Western nostalgias for a developmental do-over, as well as with fears for an endangered European heritage at the 'margins' of Western civilization. This dissertation contributes to the anthropology of post-socialist transformations in Eastern Europe by drawing attention to the relationship between ethnicity and participation in a global capitalism. It shows how a continuous, living engagement with the "outside," the "West," with consumer capitalism has been part of local quotidian subjectivities and understandings of the world, all mediated by desire and access to mobility and possibility. Understandings of people's current relationship with development, consumption, the idea and reality of capitalism cannot be disentangled from these continuities, and I argue for locating analysis precisely in these relationships. This dissertation also brings a critical native voice to the body of English language Eastern European anthropology. At the same time, it attempts to both build on and disrupt historical approaches to the region by forging analytical and substantive continuities with discipline-wide approaches to ethnicity, development, and heritage tourism.

電視模式(TV formats)在全球的跨文化旅行,及其如何本土化以適應在地社會政經情境,成為值得學界關注和研究的主題。作為對這一主題的回應,本文致力於研究《醜女無敵》電視劇--“醜女貝蒂“模式在中國的本土化。借由對該劇文本、生產和觀眾解讀的綜合分析,本研究從宏觀上探索符號形式與中國社會變遷的關係。具體而言,研究者聚焦於以下研究問題:在當前電視模式貿易、克隆和本土化的背景下,中國電視劇《醜女無敵》與美國電視劇《醜女貝蒂》有何異同?在中華人民共和國這一特定社會情境下,《醜女無敵》受到了怎樣的政治、經濟限制?中國觀眾如何解讀《醜女無敵》電視劇?《醜女無敵》受歡迎的原因所在,及該劇表徵了怎樣的中國現代性?
為回答以上問題,研究者採用了多種定質方法,即文本分析、民族志、焦點小組、檔案分析和深度訪談。其研究發現《醜女無敵》作為混雜性文本,兼有西方現代性元素和獨特的中國性。《醜女無敵》的生產受到了中國政經情境的極大限制。經濟力量有中心主導、系統地控制著生產過程。而政治力量的控制卻是散漫於整個生產者社群,并呈現去中心的狀態。中國觀眾在解讀《醜女無敵》時主要有两種模式:霸權式解讀与協商式解讀。而对抗式解读却在该剧的解读模式中呈现缺失状态。持有霸權式解讀的觀眾作為主流在諸多方面與權力中心一致,從而形成霸權效應。
《醜女無敵》可歸類為本研究所析霸權文本,并表徵和複製了一種中國現代(Chinese modernity)。轄制於党國,中國現代性在其三大結構性維度上都呈現高度的混雜性。就中國電視業發展趨勢而言,研究者認為全球電視模式在中國將愈加繁榮,因其有極大潛質成為霸權文本,繼而服務于權力中心。
With the increasing transcultural flow of television formats, the localization of these formats to fit various socio-political contexts is worthy of academic scrutiny. This is a case study on the TV drama Ugly Wudi (Chounv Wudi), the Chinese version of the global Ugly Betty format. Exploring textuality, production, and reception simultaneously, my dissertation sheds light on the relationship between symbolic forms and social transition in China. Specifically speaking, the research questions initiating this study are as follows: Under current TV format cloning, trading, and borrowing, what are the similarities and differences between the Chinese Ugly Wudi and the American Ugly Betty? In the specific context of the People’s Republic of China, what are the political and economic forces that constrain the production of Ugly Wudi? What are the audience interpretations of Ugly Wudi? What accounts for Ugly Wudi’s popularity, and to what extent does it reflect a Chinese version of modernity?
Multiple qualitative methods have been applied by the researcher to explicate the research questions, including textual analysis, ethnography, focus groups, archival analysis, and in-depth interviews. It is found that Ugly Wudi is a hybridized text that combines elements of Western modernity with Chinese particularities. As for Wudi’s production, there are significant constraints arising from China’s political economy. While the economic systematically controls the production with a center, the political is a decentered control pervasively conditioning the production community. Two different readings of the Wudi show are found, namely, the hegemonic reading and the negotiated reading; while the resistant reading is absent in the show’s viewership. The hegemonic audience forms the majority, coinciding with the authorities in many respects, which shows a hegemonic effect.
Ugly Wudi is a hegemonic text that can best represent and reproduce Chinese modernity. Charted by the party-state for legitimization, Chinese modernity shows a high degree of hybridization in its three structural dimensions. The researcher contends that television formatting will be a trend in the Chinese TV industry, as it has great potential to create hegemonic texts that serve the power center.

En 1905, après une après-midi de peinture plutôt éprouvante sous la chaleur de la campagne parisienne, Maurice de Vlaminck s’arrête pour se rafraîchir dans un bistro d’Argenteuil. Sur le bar qui lui fait face, perdus entre les bouteilles d’alcool, trois objets africains attirent son attention : deux pièces Yoruba du Dahomey et une pièce de Côte-d’Ivoire. En échange d’une tournée générale, le propriétaire accepte de les lui céder. C’est en les montrant à un ami de son père venu visiter son atelier en mars 1906, qu’il obtiendra de ce dernier deux autres statues africaines, ainsi qu’un masque blanchâtre assez quelconque, qui pourtant fascina son alter ego fauviste, le peintre André Derain, dès qu’il le vit. Pressé par des soucis financiers, Vlaminck repoussera une première offre d’achat de son ami pour mieux accepter celle qu’il lui fit quelques jours plus tard. Début avril 1906, pour 50 francs, Derain était entré en possession de son célèbre masque Fang1 et l’accrochait aux murs de son atelier de la rue Tourlaque.
