Abstract:

The Westray Mine disaster, that occurred on May 9, 1992 in Pictou County, Nova Scotia led to the death of twenty-six miners and has been linked to gross corporate violations. A public inquiry into the Westray Mine explosion was called on May 15, 1992 by Nova Scotia premier Donald Cameron. In this thesis a qualitative discourse analysis is applied to the examination of the Westray Mine Inquiry Report, the seventy-four recommendations from the Inquiry and a sample of the Inquiry transcripts. This research includes the exploration of the key players, problematizations which emerged in the discourse, the formal and informal rules and the relationships of truth and power. There is also an analysis of several key themes, including: the nature of the Inquiry discourse, the Inquiry's conceptualization of risk and its construction of the distinction between the private and public sectors. The theoretical framework for this thesis was provided by literature on governmentality which I found particularly pertinent to the analysis of public inquiries. In this thesis, the governmentality framework was helpful in formulating research questions and an analytics of government approach provided useful research guidelines for my study. Public inquiries are also analyzed as an example of reflexive government since they react to governability problems by including the public and developing recommendations for changes in the governing style. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the Westray Mine Inquiry evolved as a form of governing. This is accomplished through an exploration of mechanisms, practices and discourses related to the production of the Inquiry. The thesis traces its frame of reference, formal and informal rules, power relations, hierarchies of knowledge, tactics, rules of inclusion and exclusion as well as the relationship between the Inquiry discourse and the final set of recommendations.

Abstract:

Westra Wermlands Sparbank är en fristående Sparbank som är verksam i västra Värmland med huvudkontor i Arvika. Bankens affärsidé bygger på att vara lokala, finnas nära till hands för sina kunder och verka för bygden.

För att kunna bedriva denna typ av enskild bankverksamhet behövs ändå en omfattande infrastruktur och produktsortiment. Att utveckla egna IT-system och exempelvis fonder är inte tänkbart då detta skulle bli alldeles för dyrt. Genom ett samarbete med storbanken Swedbank löses tidigare nämnda problem, men samarbetet genererar i ett annat problem, nämligen att Swedbank inverkar på Westra Wermlands Sparbanks varumärke och identitet.

Syftet med denna uppsats är därför att få en djupare förståelse för varumärkeshanteringen hos Westra Wermlands Sparbank och att undersöka de effekter som uppkommer internt och externt vid ett företagssamarbete, som exempelvis det med Swedbank.

För att få förståelse och kunskap inom ämnet har vi fördjupat oss i teorier kring varumärkets funktioner, brand equity, brand identity – brand image samt kommunikation. Denna teori användes växelvis med metoden då ett abduktivt angreppssätt valdes. Studien är uppbyggd på kvalitativ data utifrån en personlig intervju och tre stycken fokusgrupper.

Kontentan i uppsatsen är att Westra Wermlands Sparbank huvudsakligen jobbar teoretiskt rätt internt med uppgiften att hantera sitt varumärke. Vi ifrågasätter dock den något knapphändiga hanteringen av feedback från kampanjer och kundrespons. Den uppfattning som konsumenterna har av varumärket skiljer sig markant från person till person, samtidigt finns det en synbar okunskap hos merparten av respondenterna om banken och dess verksamhet. Externa faktorer såsom samarbetet med Swedbank, referensgrupper m.m. har en betydande roll för den generella uppfattningen, men vi kan likväl inte utesluta att banken själv alltid agerar helt korrekt utåt i sin marknadsföring.

Abstract:

Excavation of thirty skulls, twenty-eight cattle and two sheep from the foundation course of a Late Neolithic structure at Links of Noltland (LON), Structure 9, is the starting point for this thesis, which investigates the economic and socio-cultural relationships of cattle and other mammals on Orkney communities between 3000 and 2500 BC. The LON settlement was located on a machair plain in Westray, the most N-W island within the Orkney archipelago (HY 428 493). Male and female cattle skulls were inter-mixed within the LON foundation course so a “bull cult” is not represented. The sequence from living skulls to skulls “animating the building is (i) breed/acquire (ii) nurture (iii) cull/butcher (iv) consume (v) transform to object (vi) curate (vii) deposit. A skull deposit infilling an internal passageway from another LON, Structure 18, is compared and contrasted with the Structure 9 foundation deposit. Special treatment of cattle skulls from a wide range of European and Near-East sites is also reviewed to emphasise the widespread use of this symbol during the Neolithic period. Orkney was separated from mainland Scotland prior to the establishment of the LON settlement so consideration is given to modes of arrival for mammals and their impact on this depauperate archipelago. Cattle and sheep dominated the domestic mammal remains examined, pig and dog were rare and goat and horse absent. The most abundant non-domestic mammals were red deer and Orkney voles, but otters and sea mammals were also present in low numbers. Genetic studies indicate that one cattle skull carried genetic material from aurochs, wild cattle. To date there is sparse evidence of interbreeding between wild aurochs and Neolithic domesticated cattle in Europe and none in Britain. The alterative explanation that aurochs were already present on Orkney during the Neolithic is explored. Articulated red deer deposits from LON were also examined. Although previous publications explored the possibility that these deposits are “ritual” other possible explanations for these deposits are outlined. No parallels were noted between the cattle skull and articulated red deer deposits, but the importance of antler for practical and symbolic use in Neolithic Orkney may be under-estimated. Stature of cattle remained relatively stable during the Mid to Late Neolithic in Orkney but underwent diminution by the Iron Age. A similar, but less marked reduction was also noted for sheep, but red deer already had small stature compared with early Holocene mainland Scotland red deer. The thesis concludes that cattle, sheep and red deer were of fundamental importance to the Neolithic society of Orkney, providing surplus food, tools and possibly traction, to support an increasingly sophisticated Neolithic society undertaking construction of complex structures and monuments. In addition, cattle fulfilled an important role in their cultural and spiritual life.

Abstract:

Lipoxygenase was extracted from Canola seeds (Brassica napus cv, Westar) and partially purified by precipitated with ammonium sulfate at 20-50% of saturation. The optimum pH for the enzyme activity was 7.5 and its K$ sb{ rm m}$ value was 2.0 $ times$ 10$ sp{-4}$ M. The activity of the enzyme extract was considerably greater on linoleic acid than on its ester or on linolenic acid. The effect of cyanide on the enzyme activity was also investigated.
Further purification of the enzyme extract was performed by successive chromatography on ion-exchange and gel filtration, using FPLC system. Four lipoxygenase isozymes (I, IIA, IIB and III) were separated. The homogeneity of each isozyme was demonstrated by the presence of a single protein band on SDS-PAGE gel electophoresis. The molecular weights of isozymes I, IIA, IIB and III were, respectively, 72,000, 106,000, 78,000 and 62,000. The optimum pH for lipoxygenase activity was 6.5 for isozyme I and 6.0 for isozymes IIA, IIB and III.

Abstract:

Roll containers are widely used in transportation and delivery operations due to the high level of flexibility and agility they offer to supply chains. However, there is a negative side to the application of roll containers in industry which can be removed or minimized by proper ergonomic and technical considerations. In this thesis work, the safety problems, economic issues and environmental effects associated with roll containers being used in VGR-WESTMA organization are reviewed in order to come up with alternative solutions to the current way of using old roll containers in their supply chain. The analysis of the problem resulted in ergonomic, safety and technical recommendation on using roll containers within their associated supply chain. The appropriate technical design of roll containers that fits the organization facilities are introduced with the aim of streamlining the supply chain flow within the organization. However, cost is considered as a limiting factor for this organization. Hence, proper ergonomic awareness and use of appropriate accessories to the roll containers are considered as a contemporary alternative solution to replacing roll containers being used in this supply chain.

The Strong Neighbourhood Strategy 2020 (TSNS 2020) is an initiative started by the City of Toronto in 2014. The strategy's intention was to engage neighbourhood residents, city services, and local non-profits in community and economic development to generate tailored solutions that would result in heightened are prosperity, vibrancy, and safety in 31 of the city's most vulnerable neighbourhoods. My exploratory analysis focused on how the strategy attempted to address violent crime prevention and mitigation in one of these neighbourhoods (Kingsview Village-The Westway). Employing a combination of comparative violent crime data analysis, stakeholder interviews, and literature reviews from academic sources as well as my background in law enforcement, I could not find any evidence that TSNS 2020 had led to reductions in violent crime in Kingsview Village-The Westway. Furthermore, I elaborated on a series of fundamental strategic and implementational flaws in TSNS 2020 has halted its ability to achieve positive results and suggested methods TSNS 2020 could use to enhance their success rate as they look to learn from their past mistakes and build for the strategy's future. It is important to note that my exploratory analysis was conducted with a very small sample size and dataset and therefore should be taken a launching point for a more robust future evaluations of TSNS 2020 successes and shortcomings in the field of crime prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:

Archaeological excavations were conducted by EASE Archaeology at the Knowe of Skea on the island of Westray between 2000 and 2009 and discovered a multi-phase site with evidence for activity dating from the Neolithic through to the Viking era. Excavations revealed that the site had been used as a burial ground for a prolonged period during the Iron Age. Human remains recovered during the first seasons of excavations were radiocarbon dated to the turn of the first millennium BC/AD. These dates highlighted the significance of this burial ground; burial evidence of Iron Age date is sparse in Atlantic Scotland and often overlooked due to the lack of a recognisable, dominant burial rite. Burials of individuals of all ages, including a very high number of infants, were recovered and represent the largest known collection of burials of this date from Scotland. Iron Age research in Atlantic Scotland has traditionally been dominated by study and discussion of the impressive stone-built architecture of domestic buildings and working places of a population about which very little is actually known. Examination of the burials from this site and comparisons with similar sites in the Orkney Islands is building a greater understanding of the treatment of the dead in this region during a period for which so little evidence exists. The burials had been placed in the rubble of earlier collapsed buildings which appears to be a common feature of many Iron Age burials in the Orkney Islands and north-eastern Scotland. Site records, photographs and views of excavators were consulted and combined with the results of the osteological analysis to determine burial patterns at the site according to age, sex or burial location. The large volume of infant remains recovered from the site created the possibility to investigate such high infant mortality and the general health of infants and children. High numbers of infant burials can often lead to suggestions of infanticide; the likelihood of this is also discussed. The results of basic stable isotope analysis (13C and 15N) were examined to interpret breastfeeding and weaning practice. The evidence provided in the results of isotopic analysis was also used to interpret the diet of this population and compared with archaeological evidence of diet from excavation of domestic sites across Atlantic Scotland. Of particular interest was the extent to which the population of the islands may have exploited marine and other wild resources when compared with similar dietary studies in the rest of Scotland and Britain. Results of osteoarchaeological analysis of the human skeletal remains from the Knowe of Skea allowed a deeper understanding of the lifestyle and health of a population for which there has been little evidence to date.

Abstract:

Syftet med denna studie är att få en fördjupad insikt i hur genusperspektivet kan skildras i skolans läroböcker. Detta genom att analysera hur genus framställs i två olika läromedel som används i svenskundervisningen i dagens skola. De två böckerna är Pojken och Tigern- en Sverige saga (1986, reviderad 2002) och Nyckeln till skatten (2012). Genom att analysera genusperspektivet i dessa böcker kan vi få en förståelse för hur genus framställs, hur det har utvecklats över tid och möjligen hur barn tolkar genus i litteraturen. Metoden som används är i huvudsak en komparativ studie utifrån ett hermeneutistiskt synsätt då detta handlar om en förståelseprocess av texten. Resultatet av studien visar på att Pojken och Tigern- en Sverige saga (1986, reviderad 2002) skildrar en stereotypisk bild av det manliga respektive kvinnliga medan Nyckeln till skatten (2012) visar på att det skett en utveckling över tid av genusframställningarna, där pojkar och män respektive flickor och kvinnor inte kan placeras inom ramarna för manligt respektive kvinnligt lika lätt längre utan framställs som mer genusöverskridande i dagens kontext.

Abstract:

Berättelsen om testosteronet. En historisk studie av vetenskapen om det manliga könshormonet inom det manliga klimakteriet och homosexualitet. Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka hur historien och idéerna om manliga klimakteriet och testosteron är kopplade till de idéer som finns om sexualitet, moral och hur läkarna såg på det manliga klimakteriet. Syftet är också att förstå hur idéerna om det manliga klimakteriet har förändrats från 1920-talet jämfört med idag och hur det har diskuterats under åren av forskare. Vikten av testosteron och vilken roll idéerna om testosteron har spelat är också av betydelse för syftet i denna uppsats. I uppsatsen använder jag sociologen Peter Conrads teori om medikalisering. Conrad beskriver medikalisering genom att säga att det är en process där icke medicinska problem förändras och bli definierade och behandlas som medicinska problem och detta görs vanligen i form av sjukdom och störningar. I den här uppsatsen beskriver jag hur idéer om ett manligt klimakterium utvecklades under perioden 1920-talet – 1960-talet. Jag beskriver de idéer forskarna och läkarna hade om vad ett manligt klimakterium kunde vara. I uppsatsen undersöks även vilken effekt upptäckten av testosteron hade på idéer om det manliga klimakteriet. Debatten som läkarna har haft om det finns ett manligt klimakterium eller inte behandlas även i uppsatsen. I uppsatsen presenterar jag fyra olika svenska läkare och en finsk läkare från perioden 1920-talet – 1960-talet och behandlar deras idéer om det manliga klimakteriet och testosteron. Då diskussionen vänder sig till testosteronet presenterar jag Paul de Kruif som publicerade boken The Male Hormone (1945) och var en av de första att göra reklam för testosteronbehandling. Jag beskriver även medikaliseringen av det manliga klimakteriet och testosteron och varför det manliga klimakteriet och testosteron inte fick samma genomslag som det kvinnliga. I denna uppsats behandlas också förhållandet mellan de manliga könshormonen och homosexualitet. Jag undersöker varför läkare försökte använda testosteron och andra manliga hormon som ”botemedel” av homosexuella män och jag beskriver ett experiment som gjordes på homosexuella av den svenska doktorn Erik Lundberg.
The purpose of this essay is to investigate the history and ideas of the male menopause and testosterone and how they are linked to ideas about sexuality, morality and how the doctors viewed the male menopause. The aim is also to understand how ideas about the male menopause has changed from the 1920’s compared to today and how it has been discussed by scientists. The importance of testosterone and the role the ideas of testosterone have played is also of importance for the purpose of this essay. In the essay, I use the sociologist Peter Conrad's theory of medicalization. Conrad describes medicalization by saying that it is a process where non-medical problems change and become defined and treated as medical problems, and this is usually done in the form of disease and disorders. In this essay, I describe how the ideas of a male menopause evolved in the period 1920’s - 1960’s. I describe the ideas scientists and doctors had about what a male menopause could be. This essay also examines the impact the discovery of testosterone had on ideas about the male menopause. The debate that doctors have had if there is a male menopause or not is also discussed in the essay. In this essay, I present four Swedish doctors and a Finnish doctor from the period 1920’s - 1960’s and their ideas about the male menopause and testosterone. When the discussion turns to testosterone, I present Paul de Kruif who published the book The Male Hormone (1945) and was one of the first to promote testosterone treatment. I also describe the medicalization of male menopause and testosterone and why the male menopause and testosterone did not have the same impact as the female menopause. This essay also discusses the relationship between the male hormone and homosexuality. I examine why doctors tried to use testosterone and other male hormones as a "cure" of gay men and I describe an experiment conducted on homosexuals by the Swedish doctor Erik Lundberg.

Abstract:

International education has been practised by Siam/Thailand's elite classes since the late 19th century. However, studies of this practice are few and far between. This thesis investigates the practice of international education among Thailand's elites, examining international education as a strategy that is used to maintain or enhance an elite's status through the importation of deterritorialised cultural capital. This research employs in-depth semi-structured interviews of former international students, examining the logic and discourses behind the participants' decision to study overseas, their perceptions and practices while studying overseas, and how they deploy their new-found cultural capital upon their return to Thailand. These narratives are then analysed with respect to historical references outlining the ways in which Siamese/Thai elites have employed western-derived cultural capitals as status symbols in the past. It demonstrates a link between these historical engagements with western modernity to the contemporary practice of international education among Thailand's elite, influencing the participants' assumption of a hierarchy of culture, with western tertiary institutions seen as being automatically superior to Thai institutions. This study investigats the practice of international education as a strategy that has been influenced by the participant's family, notably through the schooling choices made for the participants by their parents. Participants who have been schooled overseas or at an international school demonstrated higher levels of ease with the Western other, enabling them to engage more closely with the 'source' of Western culture, allowing them to show greater nuance in their consumption of Western things and practices. Their schooling history placed them at an advantage to participants who have been schooled in the Thai educational system, whose narrative shows a more anxious, deliberative, and by-the-book approach to their engagement with western culture. This study confirms findings from previous studies into international practices. Specifically, it shows that narratives of openness to foreign others do not necessarily automatically indicate a cosmopolitan or globally reflexive world view, that these narratives need to be analysed within the context of the participants' frame of reference. In the case of this thesis, the participants' narratives of openness to foreign others and their valuing of international education prove to be a reproduction of a culturally hierarchical frame of reference, with roots in the unequal relationship between Siam/Thailand and western colonial powers. This frame of reference results in the west being perceived as the source of modernity and progress. Moreover, this thesis also expands upon previous research into deterritorialised cultural capital, broadening the concept by bringing attention to the nuance between high cultural capital participants, and very high cultural capital participants. This thesis also demonstrates how Thailand's intellectually bifurcated discourse of its relations to the west complicates the study of international education as a deterritorialised form of cultural capital. This finding demonstrates a need for an approach to deterritorialised cultural capital that is attuned to not just the nuances of a particular field's western lifestyle myth but also the nuances in how that myth was constructed.

The thesis deals with the views on mass culture in the last three novels of the American writer Nathanael West (i.e. Miss Lonelyhearts, A Cool Million and The Day of the Locust). The main argument is that while these novels often criticize mass culture, their views of it are rather ambivalent than purely negative. The first two chapters describe the cultural context that informed the novels and their view of mass culture, including modernism, the rise of mass production, and opinions of mass culture that were typical in the 1930s. The next two chapters then proceed to examine in detail the many uses of mass culture in the novels.

This thesis examines the Swedish speaking minority in the area of Finland. Because Finland had been a part of the Kingdom of Sweden for some centuries, the Swedish language had a dominant position in Finland for quite some time. The Swedish language kept its high prestige even during the period of the Russian rule that began in 1809. In the 2nd part of the 19th century the status of the Swedish language weakened to a large extent and today it is considered to be a minority language of Finland. The purpose of this thesis is in the first instance to define the term of identity and the specifics of minority identity. Subsequently I will focus on the the Swedish speaking minority in Finland, its self- concept, history and literature. In the last part of my thesis I will investigate the work of the Finland- Swedish writer Kjell Westö, in particular his depiction of his own Finland- Swedish identity. The “Taiwan-Australia working holiday agreement” was signed in 2004; since then, thousands of Taiwanese youth heading to Australia, and created the major resource of labor force for Australia. Australia has become the country where the most Taiwanese youth working overseas stays. Aiming at Taiwanese youth as working holiday maker in Australia, this paper tries to understand the motivation and results of the phenomenon. In 2012, Business Today released the relevant article, and exposing the real situation of working holiday; after that, the idea of “Tai lau” (Taiwanese labor) was formed. There are many reasons that Taiwanese youth choose Australia. Economically, influenced by the deteriorating labor market and low-paid jobs in Taiwan, the well-paid jobs in Australia generate the attraction. Culturally, modernity and the expectation toward West countries motivate Taiwanese youth leave domestic market for Australia. When the socalled WHMs enter the Australia labor market, they are involved into primary sector of economic activity; however, by means of “experiencing the West”, they transfer all the physical hard works to the inevitable process of experiencing the West. Therefore, through interviewing the previous WHMs, this paper analyzes the economic and cultural motivations. Meanwhile, how the youth find the jobs by social network and agents will also be explained. In short, this paper contributes to explain how the WHMs rationalize the working holiday behavior when facing the hard working environment and exploitation; and moreover transfer the downward social mobility to cultural experience capital accumulation. Eventually, justify the difference between themselves and the others.

Abstract:

Double stranded (ds) complementary DNA (cDNA) copies of the beet western yellows virus (BWYV) coat protein (CP) gene were synthesized from genomic BVVYV RNA using reverse transcriptase (RT) followed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The ds cDNA copy of the BWYV CP was then cloned into plasmid pRT103, a plant expression vector which contains the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter and polyadenylation signal. The CP cDNA was inserted in the plus-sense orientation (clone BW102D) and in the anti-sense orientation (clone BW137D) relative to the CaMV 35S promoter. The CP coding regions of both pRT103 constructs were sequenced and found to correspond closely to those of previously published BWYVCP sequences. In vitro translation analysis in wheat germ extracts of synthetic transcripts of the cloned BWYV CP DNA produced only one major protein of ca. 22.5kDa, the expected size for the BWYV coat protein. The CaMV 35S promoter-BWYVCP-polyadenylation cassette from clones BW102D and BW137D were then cloned separately into the Hind III restriction enzyme site between the left and right borders of the T-DNA region and next to the npt II cassette of the two binary plasmids, pCGN1548 and pCGN1557 (Calgene). After mobilization of the four resulting binary plasmid constructs (pCGN154802, pCGN154837, pCGN155702 and pCGN155737) into Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA101, the A. tumefaciens were used in the plant transformation procedure described by Moloney et al. (1989) utilizing cotyledonary explants of Brassica napus cv. Westar. Thirty eight regenerated plants were recovered under the selection of the antibiotic, kanamycin. Southern blot analysis of Hind digested plant DNA indicated that the BWYV CP gene was present in the genome of three transformed plants (154802-1, 154802-3 and 1557-7). PCR analysis of the same plant genomic DNA followed by Southern blot analysis of the PCR products indicated that several plants contained the BWYV CP gene integrated into the plant genome (plants 155702-1 to -8, -10 to -14, 1557-7 and 154802-1 to -5). RNA transcripts of either the BWYV CP gene or the co-transformed npt II gene could not be detected using Northern blot analysis of the RNA extracted from regenerated plants. However, germination of the R1 seeds from the regenerated plants on kanamycin indicated that the npt II gene product which confers kanamycin resistance was functional in many of the progeny of the regenerated plants. BWYV CP subunits could not be detected byenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a polyclonal antiserum which reacts with BWYV CP subunits. Preliminary evaluation of the progeny of two promising lines (154802-3 and 1557-7), demonstrated to have the BWYV CP gene integrated into the plant genome, did not reveal significant levels of resistance when challenged with the homologous virus using the aphid vector, Myzus persicae (Sulz.)

The present study primarily explored the images of tarot cards (hereafter abbreviated as “tarot”). Featuring symbolic signs, tarot images tend to have hidden meanings. The key to the continued popularity of tarot for centuries lies in its communication of messages (content) through pictures, instead of text. Among the numerous types of tarot in world history, that designed by Arthur Edward Waite, Reiko Shimizu, and Derjen were chosen for an analysis and investigation. We compared the differences between Eastern and Western drawing styles and determined that contemporary artists incorporate their creativity into their designs of tarot images while abiding by the inherent principles of archaic samples. On the basis of the implications of images and symbols on the tarot images throughout the history of the tarot, designers can create their distinctive tarot images.

En la tesis de doctorado en Historia titulada “Memoria y recuerdo en el Reino Medio egipcio. Acerca de un mito de origen en el papiro Westcar” los temas principales que se han analizado son la memoria y el recuerdo, y los mitos de origen del rey, en relación a los dos últimos relatos literarios del papiro Westcar. En ella se han analizado los diferentes aspectos míticos-literarios que están presentes en la narración, y de este modo hemos podido determinar que los dos últimos relatos del manuscrito son una narración mítico-literaria del mito de origen del rey, particularmente del origen de la dinastía V, siendo ésta la primera versión hasta ahora conocida del mito. Asimismo se han comprendido los rasgos que hacen del relato un relato de ficcional, su característica distintiva es que se narra desde un recuerdo profético, un futuro literario que se concreta también literariamente, pero que pasado y futuro literario son un pasado histórico. De este modo, hemos estudiado los elementos que forman una memoria cultural en el relato literario, y cómo ellos dan cuenta de la formación de una memoria mítica, en la cual se recuerda a la dinastía V como una dinastía solar, mitificándose los tres primeros reyes como hermanos hijos del dios Ra.

The purpose of this study was to identify the leading business cultural differences in communication between Belize and Taiwan. Then, find out ways on how to make Belize and Taiwan collaborate effectively in business through improving communication skills. It is mainly written for Taiwanese companies and entrepreneurs who intend to work or do business in Belize. The thesis was designed with theoretical support from well-known communication scholars, Hofstede and Lewis, and qualitative research. The data collected for this thesis were collected by semi-structured interviews, which can gather a bit more information from qualitative research. The data from this thesis covers more information such as personal thoughts, ideas, and values. The results of the study show the explanations of national and business cultural differences and similarities between Belize and Taiwan, as well as tips or suggestions for breaking the cultural barriers between Belize and Taiwan. The results collected can inform readers on Belizean and Taiwanese culture, and therefore, be applied to the Taiwanese business community in Belize.
