Canadian Journal of Plant Science 81, no. 3 (July 1, 2001): 367–72. http://dx.doi.org/10.4141/p00-115.

Abstract:
Bromoxynil herbicide resistance is the newest type of broad-spectrum, non-selective herbicide resistance to be introduced into oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.). This herbicide resistance is conferred by a single transgene (the oxy gene), taken from a soil bacterium, which confers the ability to metabolize hydroxybenzonitrile herbicides such as bromoxynil. The level of resistance to bromoxynil herbicide in oilseed rape is high, but it is not known whether there are any performance changes associated with the oxy transgene or with the derived herbicide resistance. To determine if there are changes in performance related to the oxy transgene, or the derived herbicide resistance, two near-isogenic transgenic bromoxynil-resistant populations, with two different forms of the oxy gene, Westar 235 and Westar 237, were developed at the University of Manitoba, grown in the field in Manitoba for several years and evaluated for comparative performance. Westar 235 and Westar 237 near-isogenic populations, either sprayed with bromoxynil at 280 g a.i. ha–1 or left unsprayed, were compared with the non-transgenic near-isogenic population cultivar, Westar, in Winnipeg, Carman, and Portage la Prairie from 1994 to 1997. There were no consistent differences in the performance of the sprayed or unsprayed transgenic near-isogenic populations in comparison to Westar for any trait. The few significant and minimal differences that were found were evenly divided between positive effects and negative effects of the oxy gene and derived herbicide resistance. There were no significant effects of spraying bromoxynil herbicide detected in paired comparisons of Westar 235 and Westar 237 sprayed versus Westar 235 and Westar 237 unsprayed, respectively. The effects of the oxy transgenes and the effects of bromoxynil spraying of herbicide-resistant lines were negligible, indicating that there is little, if any biological cost associated with the bromoxynil resistance transgenes or related herbicide resistance. Key words: Transgenic oilseed rape, Brassica napus, biological cost

Abstract:
AbstractPlant growth and insect resistance characteristics were determined for two Brassica napus Linnaeus (Brassicaceae) lines, AtGL3+ and K-5-8, developed for enhanced trichome densities relative to their parental cultivar Westar. In the field, both transgenic lines had glabrous cotyledons that curled upwards at emergence but flattened with time, and young leaves with elevated trichome density. Flea beetle (Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) and Phyllotreta striolata (Fabricius); Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feeding was reduced on true leaves of both lines by 30–50% compared with insecticide-free Westar. Flea beetle feeding levels on cotyledons of the two hairy-leaved lines were lower than on unprotected Westar and similar to those seen on insecticide-treated Westar. Antixenosis and antibiosis resistance was observed when diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus); Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) interacted with the hairy AtGL3+ and K-5-8 lines in the laboratory. Although the numbers of eggs laid by female diamondback moths on the transformed lines were similar to or higher than on Westar, in feeding bioassays larvae moved off AtGL3+ plants and larval feeding injury decreased on the transformed lines compared with Westar leaves. No agronomic or seed yield penalties were found for plants of K-5-8. These data highlight the utility of manipulating trichome regulatory genes to increase plant resistance against brassicaceous insect pests.

Westag 97 has larger capacity of Cd accumulation in roots which prevents Cd from translocating into stems and leaves; conversely, AC Hime has smaller capacity of Cd accumulation in roots; more Cd is transported into stems and leaves. The different capacity of Cd in roots between Westag 97 and AC Hime causes the different Cd concentration in seeds. Meanwhile, according to the different expression levels of RSTK, ISCP, and H+-ATPase between Westag 97 and AC Hime, RSTK may be involved in transporting Cd into stems and leaves; H+-ATPase may be correlated to the capacity of Cd accumulation in roots; and Cd caused some changes of fundamental life process which leaded to the different expression patterns of ISCP between Westag 97 and AC Hime.

Abstract:
AbstractThe years from 1928 to 1930 witnessed a bitter struggle for the control of the German National People's Party (DNVP), the bastion of German conservatism in the Weimar Republic. One of the principal protagonists in this conflict was Count Kuno von Westarp, chairman of the DNVP from 1926 to 1928 and of the DNVP delegation to the Reichstag from 1924 to 1929. Westarp struggle with great determination to preserve the unity of the party in the face of a concerted effort from the radical Pan-German nationalists around the newly elected party chairman, film and press magnate Alfred Hugenberg. But Westarp's efforts on behalf of party unity ultimately failed as the moderates who stood on the DNVP's left wing abandoned the party in two secessions, the first in December 1929 and the second in July 1930. In the second of these Westarp himself left the party. In the meantime the DNVP had been transformed from a conservative Sammelpartei into an instrument of the radical right.

Abstract:
Abstract Fatty acid levels and gene expression profiles for selected genes associated with the synthesis of fatty acids (FA), triacylglycerol, and oil body proteins were examined in three oilseed rape (Brassica napus) cultivars that have utility for cultivar development in our spring canola breeding program. The seed oil content of Bronowski, Q2, and Westar was 39.0, 40.1, and 40.6%, respectively at 40 days after flowering (DAF). During the 20 to 40 day period of seed development, cultivars had varying levels of palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, α-linolenic, eicosenoic, and erucic acid. In general, the percentage of each FA was similar among the cultivars during seed development. However, the level of oleic acid was lower and the levels of eicosenoic acid and erucic acid were higher in Bronowski than in Q2 and Westar seeds; linoleic acid also tended to be lower in Bronowski. Gene expression among the cultivars was similar from 10 to 40 DAF. The few exceptions were that expression of KAS1 and SAD were higher in Westar and Q2 than in Bronowski at 25 DAF, SAD was highest in Q2, intermediate in Westar, and lowest in Bronowski at 35 DAF, FAD2 was higher in Q2 than in Bronowski at 35 DAF, FAD3 was higher in Q2 than in Bronowski at 15 DAF and Q2 and Westar at 25 and 30 DAF, and FAE1 was higher in Westar and Q2 than in Bronowski at 30 DAF. Correlation analysis for gene expression against DAF for each genotype supported a common trend in gene expression among the three cultivars with gene expression tending to decrease over time; except for LPAAT, which tended to increase. The correlation between the level of FAs and expression of genes by genotype indicated no general trend; rather correlations seem to depend on the genotype.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Since porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) can infect cultured human cells, they are a potential hazard to xenotransplantation. For this reason, endogenous retroviruses from the Westran (Westmead Hospital transplantation) inbred line of pigs were analyzed by using consensus primers for the type A and type B viruses to amplify 1.8-kb envelope gene fragments. After preliminary analysis with restriction enzymes KpnI and MboI, 31 clones were sequenced. Between types A and B, five recombinant clones were identified. Fifty-five percent of clones (17 of 31) had premature stop codons within the envelope protein-encoding region. Endogenous retroviruses in Westran pigs were physically mapped by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using PERV-A and PERV-B envelope clones as probes to identify at least 32 integration sites (19 PERV-A sites and 13 PERV-B sites). The chromosomal sites of integration in the Westran strain are quite different from those in the European Large White pig. The recombinant clones suggest that defective PERVs could become infective through recombination and further that PERVs might recombine with human endogenous retroviruses in xenotransplants.

Abstract:
The Middle Devonian lacustrine sediments of Orkney, off the NE Scottish mainland, are composed largely of the Lower and Upper Stromness formations and overlying Rousay Formation. These three formations have been subdivided and defined by vertebrate biostratigraphic biozones with recent division of the Rousay Formation into three further units based on characteristic fish fossils. The division of the Rousay Formation has enabled a map to be constructed of the solid geology of the island of Westray, Orkney, based on fish identification, detailed logging of sedimentary cycles throughout the Rousay succession, parameters of divisional boundaries, and a survey of faults marking sinistral transtensional movement parallel to the Great Glen Fault. Post-Carboniferous shortening and basin inversion led to uplift, folding and reactivation of normal faults as reverse faults, to form a positive strike-slip flower structure in Westray. A suite of Permian igneous dykes intruded across Orkney include three minor offshoots in Westray. The resulting map is the first to make use of biostratigraphic units within the Rousay Flagstone, which are now regarded as Members.

Abstract:
Controlled environment growth cabinets set at mean temperatures of 10, 13.5, 15, 17, 20, 22 and 25 °C were used to determine a baseline temperature of 5 °C for the growth of Westar summer rape (Brassica napus L.). Temperatures in excess of 25 °C caused whole plant sterility. Phenological data obtained from ten field sites, collected over three years, was used to verify the 5 °C baseline temperature. Field growing degree days (GDD) and cabinet GDD were not significantly different. The percent development to physiological maturity (% DPM) of field grown Westar summer rape, as influenced by temperature, was not significantly different from that predicted by the cabinet determined equation. The agreement between field and cabinet GDD and observed and predicted % DPM verified the use of a 5 °C baseline temperature in field GDD equations. % DPM and GDD were found to be better estimators of phenological development in the field than calendar days. A simple linear model, relating % DPM to GDD was developed. It was concluded that temperature is the most important environmental factor regulating the phenological development of Westar summer rape in western Canada.Key words: Westar summer rape, Brassica napus, baseline temperature, phenological development, growing degree days

Abstract:
Uno and Sekine considered the early postwar stage as a qualitative divergence from the structural characteristics of capitalism resulting in a gradual ex-capitalist transition. For Westra, the disintegration happens when self-commodified money capital in the money and capital markets disintermediates itself from the value augmentation processes in the production sphere. Westra develops a theory of financialization of globalization distinctive from the post-Keynesian notion of finance-led growth regime or the classical Marxist notion of finance capital.

"Evaluation of pyraclostrobin as a component in seed and foliar fungicides for the management of blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans) of canola (Brassica napus)." Abstract:
Infection by Leptosphaeria maculans (Desm.) Ces. & de Not., the causal agent of blackleg of canola (Brassica napus L.), can result in seedling death, foliar lesions, and the development of stem cankers on adult plants. Strobilurin fungicides such as pyraclostrobin are popular, as they are effective against a broad range of fungal pathogens, have novel target specificity, and translaminar activity within the plant. The seed treatment Prosper FX (carbathiin + trifloxystrobin + metalaxyl) and an experimental formulation BAS 720 F (pyraclostrobin + fluxapyroxad + metalaxyl) were evaluated for their efficacy in managing blackleg when applied alone or in combination with the foliar fungicides Priaxor (pyraclostrobin + fluxapyroxad) or Tilt 250 EC (propiconazole). Experiments were conducted with the blackleg-susceptible cultivar ‘Westar’ and the moderately resistant cultivar ‘Dekalb 73-15 RR’ under greenhouse and field conditions in 2012 and 2013. In one greenhouse trial, all fungicide treatments significantly reduced stem blackleg severity on ‘73-15’ and ‘Westar’ compared with the inoculated–untreated controls. During 3 of 4 site-years, the combination of the experimental seed treatment BAS 720 F and Priaxor significantly reduced stem disease severity relative to the inoculated–untreated control by 60%–77% for ‘73-15’ and by 50%–75% for ‘Westar’. This treatment also resulted in a significant yield increase relative to the inoculated–untreated control in ‘Westar’ in 2 site-years by 24% and 56%. The results of the study suggest a reduction in blackleg symptoms and improved yields when canola is treated with a combination of seed and foliar fungicides, especially when cropping a susceptible cultivar.
